• How can I upgrade bash to >= 4.1 on CentOS 5.5?

  I have a CentOS 5.5 VPS server. I want to use RVM. According to the console output when I run the RVM installer, RVM requires bash = 4.1. I just ran yum update. My bash version is now 3.2.25. If I understand how yum works, that means that 3.2.25 is sort of the version of bash that "belongs with" my CentOS version, and it's the latest version I can get using yum. (Right? Or am I wrong about this?) How can I get that on my CentOS 5.5 system? To clarify, I understand that I can just download the source and install, but I'm hesitant to break out of yum's version management system. Is there a way to upgrade bash without disrupting yum?

• Windows Azure AppFabric SDK - June CTP - Download issues

  Microsoft has announced availability of the June CTP for Windows Azure AppFabric. See http://blogs.msdn.com/b/appfabric/archive/2011/06/20/announcing-the-windows-azure-appfabric-june-ctp.aspx. This is an exciting release and provides greater insight into where the AppFabric team is heading in terms of developer and management tooling. Microsoft is offering space in the cloud to experiment with the CTP, but this is limited, so register early to get a namespace! You can download the SDK for the June CTP. However, we ran into a lot of trouble trying to do this today. Whenever we followed the link, we ended up on the page for the May CTP. We found what appeared to be a workaround which we were able to repeat on another box (and which I reported on Connect), but then a few minutes later I couldn't repeat it. Just now, the given link appears to be working every time in IE, but not in Firefox!   Frankly, the behaviour seems random!   It looks like the same URL points to two different pages, and I suspect that which page you end up on is hit and miss. The link to the download page is http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=17691. If you end up on the wrong page, try again later and you may get to the right place. Or try googling "Windows Azure AppFabric SDK CTP – June Update" and following a link to this page. For some reason, that sometimes seems to work. Now i plan to migrate to unmanaged VPS, so i need some guides, tips on how and where to start learning. I will have more specific questions once i start using it, but now i just need some general answers about this topic. Thanks. Update: Ok, i have decided to go for unmanaged VPS with cPanel. OS is CentOS-5. I contacted support only for some small(i think) things like creating new account in whm, some database importing, installing new software(rare)... What i will be using is apache, php, mysql. I think i will be able to cope with upgrading to new versions, so the thing that interests me the most is security i guess.

• How to troubleshoot latency between 2 linux hosts

  The latency between 2 linux hosts is about .23ms. They are connected by one switch. Ping & Wireshark confirm the latency number. But, i dont have any visibility into what is causing this latency. How can i know if the latency is due to NIC on host A or B or the switch or the cables? UPDATE: The .23 ms latency is bad for my existing application, which sends messages at very high frequency and i am trying to see if it can be brought down to .1ms

• WiFi slow sometimes, reboot helps, how do I debug it?

  Ubuntu 12.04.1 with all updates installed. Laptop Lenovo Thinkpad X230 with Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6205. WiFi sometimes becomes extremely slow. Often this occurs when I wake the system from suspend and connect to a different network. I find no obvious clues in system logs. /etc/init.d/network-manager restart doesn't help, but a reboot does. How can I go on with debugging this issue? In specific, which parts of the system should I try to restart (without a complete reboot)? I know of problems with Intel WiFi (see for example this question and the instructions here), but if that was the problem, I would expect the WiFi to be slow at all times, and not just sometimes. Also, I have a gut feeling that it might be a DNS issue (for example, getting a page from a known server is faster than accessing a new server), but I don't know how to tackle it. Update: despite numerous updates in the meanwhile, I still observe this behavior. It happens always when I access my WiFi router at home after returning from work; when I reboot my laptop, the connection speed is good again.

• When an Excel file is locked on a network share, how does it know who locked the file?

  We are using Excel 2010 and sometimes users are working from a network share. When a user on the network opens the file in Excel, the file is locked for editing - this is the expected behavior. When another user tries to open the file, Excel gives the message [filename] is locked for editing by 'John Doe' The problem is, the user is always this one particular user's name, no matter who actually has the file open. Where does Excel get this info, and how do I fix it? Update: I should have mentioned that in Excel, under Options (General), the correct user names have been set up. That is not where this user name is coming from.

  I did a backup to a remote nfs folder with rsync, from a MAC to a Remote Debian. The final backup is 58GB less than the original. Rsync says that everything was OK, and nothing to update. • .htaccess rules to rewrite URLs to front end page?

  I am adding a new application to my site at example.com/app. I want views at that URL to always open myapp.php. E.g. example.com/app -> example.com/app/myapp.php and example.com/app/ -> example.com/app/myapp.php What's the correct form of rewrite rules in the .htaccess file? I've got: <IfModule mod_rewrite.c> RewriteEngine On RewriteBase /app/ RewriteRule ^myapp\.php$ - [L] RewriteRule ^myapp.php$ - [L] RewriteRule . - [L] </IfModule> ...based on what the Wordpress front-end does. But all I see at example.com/app is a directory of files. :( (I put those rewrites at the top of my .htaccess file). Any ideas? • Should all public methods in an abstract class be marked virtual?

  I recently had to update an abstract base class on some OSS that I was using so that it was more testable by making them virtual (I could not use an interface as it combined two). This got me thinking whether I should mark all of the methods that I needed virtual, or if I should mark every public method/property virtual. I generally agree with Roy Osherove that every method should be made virtual, but I came across this article that got me thinking about whether this was necessary or not. I am going to limit this down to abstract classes for simplicity, however (whether all concrete public methods should be virtual is especially debatable, I am sure). I could see where you might want to allow a sub-class to use a method, but not want it overriding the implementation. However, as long as you trust that Liskov's Substitution Principle will be followed, then why would you not allow it to be overriden? By marking it abstract, you are forcing a certain override anyway, so, it seems to me that all public methods inside of an abstract class should indeed be marked virtual. However, I wanted to ask in case there was something I might not be thinking. Should all public methods within an abstract class be made virtual?

• Ubuntu won't load, freezes on purple screen

  Last time I restarted my computer, I could not get Ubuntu to load; the screen would either go black, or would hang at the purple screen indefinitely. I have had some graphics problems in the past, but had put 'nomodeset' after 'quiet splash' in the grub command line, which at least let Ubuntu load. That doesn't work now, and doesn't work if I remove it. I looked up some answers, such as this one: Purple start screen - no splash screen However, when I enter the root in recovery mode in grub, I always get errors when I run those command lines and it won't let me modify the files. Also, if I run in recovery mode and then choose 'resume normal boot', it will continue. But instead of getting a usual interface, I get a black screen that asks for my username and password. I enter these, and it tells me I'm in Ubuntu 12.04, but I'm still on a black screen with texts. It also informs me that there are updates to install. When I use the command 'sudo apt-get update', it starts to retrieve the information, but then the screen goes blank after a couple of seconds and I can't do anything anymore. Any ideas?

  I have tried and tried to get the system beep working, but with no success. I have selected System--Sound--System Beep--Enable Audible Beep (from the Gnome Desktop) I have tried from a Terminal window Edit--General Tab--Selecting terminal bell checkbox I have tried entering modprobe pcspkr at the command line. Trying echo -e '\a' or using the beep application - Nothing works! I know my hardware speaker works, because if on startup the battery is low it will beep. Update: It is a laptop computer. It is an IBM Thinkpad, iSeries. I did look at the modprobe blacklist, and pcspkr was not listed.

  I plugged in a 250GB USB hard drive into my MacBook Pro and want to format it in FAT so I can transfer files back and forth between a windows machine. (My windows7 machine only formats in exFAT which my Snow Leopard 2.6.4 doesn't support until I do the update). So I want to format it on the mac. but when I right click on the drive, it gives me the options to eject, copy, but not to format. I can go into Disk Utilities, click on Partition, but the only option is the "Mac Journaled format". How can I Format my USB drive as FAT from my MacBook Pro?

• How to share my localhost over the internet?

  I really want to share my localhost over the internet to show my friends the progress of the website we're working on, so that I don't need to upload it to the public server each time I make a change. showoff.io is not free and localtunnel gives me "failed to authenticate" when trying to upload my public key (a lot of people seem to have this problem and there doesn't seem to be a solution for this). Does anyone know any other free service I can use or any other solution at all? I'm using a Mac. Thanks. UPDATE: with localhost I mean a web server running on my computer, I have a dynamic IP address and no I'm not behind a router (just using a wireless modem).

• What is the simplest way to render video into memory (for drawing to a texture) in .NET?

  In my project I would like to be able to play back video on surfaces in the world. I intend to do this by having the video frames rendered to a block of memory, then use this to update a texture each frame. Everything is in place - except for the part that actually gets the video. I have looked on Google and found that the video library world is very expansive (and geared towards video processing), and am having trouble finding a suitable one. FFMpeg is very comprehensive, but is an entire suite and would take a good amount of work to integrate. So far the most promising library I've found is the one based on the VLC player libraries - by virtue of it using the same resources as VLC Player it is known to be very capable; it also renders to blocks of memory, but the API (at least of the one on Codeplex) is more of a port of the C++ API rather than a managed wrapper. The 'solution' can be any wrapper/API/library, but with characteristics that make it suitable for use in a rendering engine, namely: Renders the video frame data to memory, so it can be picked up and passed to a texture on the GPU easily. Super simple - all that is needed is a way to load, jump and render a frame programatically - ideally it would use the systems codecs and not require an assortment of plugins. Permissive license (LGPL or more free-er) .NET bindings at least; all the better if it is natively managed Can anyone suggest a lightweight, (.NET) library, that can take a video file, and spit out some frames into a byte[]?

• What language and topics should be covered when teaching non-CS college students how to program?

  I have been asked by many of my non-computer science friends to teach them how to program. I have agreed to hold a seminar for them that will last for approximately 1 to 2 hours. My thoughts are to use Python as the language to teach them basic programming skills. I figured Python is relatively easier to learn from what I have researched. It is also a language I want to learn which will make holding this seminar all the more enjoyable. The topics I plan to cover are as followed: Variables / Arrays Logic - If else statements, switch case, nested statements Loops - for, while, do-while and nested loops Functions - pass by value, pass by reference (is this the correct terms for Python? I am mostly a C/C++ person) Object Oriented Programming Of course, I plan to have code examples for all topics and I will try to have each example flow into each other so that at the end of the seminar everyone will have a complete working program. I suppose my question is, if you were given 1 to 2 hours to teach a group of college students how to program, what language would you choose and what topics would you cover? I should have mentioned in my earlier post above that a majority of the students attending the seminar have some form of programming experience whether it was with Java or using Matlab. Most of these students are 3rd/4th year Engineering students who want to get a refresher on programming before they graduate.

  I think that my system is staying at an older kernel version. It seems to update when I run dist-upgrade but the current kernel version doesn't change. • ODBC in SSIS 2012

  In August 2011 the SQL Server client team published a blog post entitled Microsoft is Aligning with ODBC for Native Relational Data Access in which they basically said "OLE DB is the past, ODBC is the future. Deal with it.". From that blog post:We encourage you to adopt ODBC in the development of your new and future versions of your application. You don’t need to change your existing applications using OLE DB, as they will continue to be supported on Denali throughout its lifecycle. While this gives you a large window of opportunity for changing your applications before the deprecation goes into effect, you may want to consider migrating those applications to ODBC as a part of your future roadmap.I recently undertook a project using SSIS2012 and heeded that advice by opting to use ODBC Connection Managers rather than OLE DB Connection Managers. Unfortunately my finding was that the ODBC Connection Manager is not yet ready for primetime use in SSIS 2012. The main issue I found was that you can't populate an Object variable with a recordset when using an Execute SQL Task connecting to an ODBC data source; any attempt to do so will result in an error:"Disconnected recordsets are not available from ODBC connections." I have filed a bug on Connect at ODBC Connection Manager does not have same funcitonality as OLE DB. For this reason I strongly recommend that you don't make the move to ODBC Connection Managers in SSIS just yet - best to wait for the next version of SSIS before doing that.I found another couple of issues with the ODBC Connection Manager that are worth keeping in mind:It doesn't recognise System Data Source Names (DSNs), only User DSNs (bug filed at ODBC System DSNs are not available in the ODBC Connection Manager)  UPDATE: According to a comment on that Connect item this may only be a problem on 64bit.In the OLE DB Connection Manager parameter ordinals are 0-based, in the ODBC Connection Manager they are 1-based (oh I just can't wait for the upgrade mess that ensues from this one!!!)You have been warned!@jamiet

• Adventures in Lab Management Configuration: CMMI Edition Part 1 of 3

  I remember at one point someone telling me how close Migrate was to Migraine. This was a process that included an environment from TFS 2008 to TFS 2010, needed to be migrated too as far as the process template goes.  Here we are talking about CMMI v4.2 to CMMI v5.0.  Now, the process to migrate the TFS Infrastructure is one thing, migrating the Process Template is a different deal, not hard … just involved. Followed a combination of steps that came from a blog post as the main guidance and then MSDN (as suggested on the guidance post) to complement some tasks and steps. Again, the focus I have here is CMMI. The high level steps taken to enable the TFS 2008 CMMI v4.2 migrated to TFS 2010 Process Template are: 1)  Backup the Collection, Configuration and Warehouse Databases. 2)  Downloaded the Process Template using Visual Studio 2010. 3) Exported, modified and imported Bug Type Definition 4) Exported, modified and imported Scenario or Requirement Type Definition. 5) Created and imported bug field mappings. Now, we can attempt to connect using Test Manager, and you should be able to get this going. After that was done, it was time to enroll VMs that already existed in the environment.  This was a bit more challenging, but in the end it was a matter of just analyzing the changes that had been made to had a temporary work around from the time we migrated to the time we converted the Work Items and such and added fields to enable communication between the project and the Test and Lab Manager component. There are 2 more parts to this post, the second will describe the detailed steps taken to complete the Process Template update and the third will talk about the gotchas and fixes for the Lab Management portion.

But we disabled root logins as a security measure and can't remember any of our other user passwords. I'm assuming that there's nothing we can do at this point to get into the server? • How can I improve the "smoothness" of a 2D side-scrolling iPhone game?

  I'm working on a relatively simple 2D side-scrolling iPhone game. The controls are tilt-based. I use OpenGL ES 1.1 for the graphics. The game state is updated at a rate of 30 Hz... And the drawing is updated at a rate of 30 fps (via NSTimer). The smoothness of the drawing is ok... But not quite as smooth as a game like iFighter. What can I do to improve the smoothness of the game? Here are the potential issues I've briefly considered: I'm varying the opacity of up to 15 "small" (20x20 pixels) textures at a time... Apparently varying the opacity in this manner can degrade drawing performance I'm rendering at only 30 fps (via NSTimer)... Perhaps 2D games like iFighter are rendered at a higher frame rate? Perhaps the game state could be updated at a faster rate? Note the acceleration vales are updated at 100 Hz... So I could potentially update part of the game state at 100 hz All of my textures are PNG24... Perhaps PNG8 would help (due to smaller size etc)

• USB keyboard not working under Windows 7 x64?

  I have two USB keyboards, one no-name cheap thing and an old Logitech. When I plug them in to my computer they pop up in Device Manager as an "Unknown device" and "USB-receiver", respectively. Both of them fail to install any drivers, neither automatically or through Windows Update. Both keyboards work perfectly on another computer I have with Windows Vista 32-bit. Can this be one of those cases where a device does not work in a 64-bit version of Windows? I doubt it though since I've never had that problem before with any device and I thought that basic things like keyboards would be kind of failsafe. I don't really know how to start debugging this issue. I've tried all the obvious, rebooting, changing the USB port, etc. Are there any generic x64 keyboard drivers you can use? Is there any way to find the manufacturer of the keyboard over USB? There is nothing written on it.

  i have several subdomains(git.example.org, build.example.org, etc.), i have a router with an external ip and i have several virtual machines on a host computer with internal ips. Now i want to route git.example.org to internal ip 10.0.2.1 and build.example.org to internal ip 10.0.2.2. How can I do this? I setup in the Router that all traffic on port 80 is comming to my host computer with internal ip 10.0.2.3 and installed Squid on that computer. I added the following lines to the squid.conf file: cache_peer 10.0.2.1 parent 80 0 no-query originserver name=server_1 cache_peer_domain server_1 git.example.org cache_peer 10.0.2.2 parent 80 0 no-query originserver name=server_2 cache_peer_domain server_2 build.example.org But this is not working for me. :( Any help appreciated.
