• Best in-memory cache of DB objects for Silverlight [closed]

  Hi, I'd like to set up a cache of database objects (i.e. rows in a table) in memory in silverlight, which I'll do using WCF and linq-to-sql. Once I have the objects in memory, I'm planning on using MSMQ to receive new objects whenever they have been modified. It's a somewhat complex approach but the goal is to reduce trips to the database and allow instant data communication between Silverlight applications that are connected to the MSMQ. My Silverlight applications are meant to be long-running and the amount of data to be cached will not be large. I'm planning on saving the in-memory cache using local storage. Anyway, in order to process the updated objects that come in, I'd like to know if the user has changed the existing object. Could I use some event relating to data-binding to set a flag indicating that the object has changes? Maybe there's a better way to do the cache entirely? Thanks!

• Deleting old tomcat version and setting a new one

  I had Apache Tomcat installed by apt-get, however I decided to get a newer one, performed apt-get remove tomcat7 and apt-get purge tomcat7. I installed a newer one means the bundled Tomcat Server in NetBeans install. However, Im still seeing the old fashioned page from former Tomcat install: It works ! If you're seeing this page via a web browser, it means you've setup Tomcat successfully. Congratulations! This is the default Tomcat home page. It can be found on the local filesystem at: /var/lib/tomcat7/webapps/ROOT/index.html I already set a different port in the server.xml file and whenever I go that site after executing the startup.sh file with sudo permissions I'm not getting any site like server (new one) isn't running. How can I still be getting the page from old Tomcat install!? When I execute the startup.sh log says all is set OK, so why isn't it working?

• Disk failing on dell mini, are there diagnostic tools?

  Hi, my dell mini 10v running Ubuntu 10.10 runs ok for hours, but then will suddenly slow down drastically. Switching to a console shows lots of error messages, which also get into /var/log/syslog. These errors happen every couple of seconds. I'm figuring that the disk is failing, but is there anyway to be sure, and can laptop disks be replaced easily? • hardy alternate cd customization and ubuntu-keyring-udeb

  I have been trying to customize Ubuntu 8.04 (hardy heron) alternate install cd. I have followed the community documentation at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallCDCustomization#Generating_a_new_ubuntu-keyring_.deb_to_sign_your_CD to rebuild the ubuntu-keyring packages. But when the media boots I get a warning: anna[7581]: WARNING **: bad md5sum. Though I have not been able to confirm that the message is for the ubunu-keyring-udeb package, the nearest debconf Adding [package] message is for ubuntu-keyring-udeb. This is followed by: INPUT critical retriever/cdrom/error. This message is already from syslog. I don't think dpkg.log will help in this case. I have tried modifying the md5sum file within the source package manually and signing it with my own public key, before building it. But that has not helped either. How do get the installer to work in this scenario? Alternatively, can I customize the contents of Ubuntu8.04 without signing anything?

• How can I embed an existing podcast into my website?

  I manage a podcast and a website, currently they are separate but I would like to have a way to embed the podcast into the website, I still want to create/update the podcast separate from the website I just want visitors to be able to listen to the podcast on the website without having to open iTunes while still having the ability to choose what episode to play. The best solution I have found is: http://tools.wizzard.tv/ but I do not like it that much. Currently I have to log on and click refresh for it to recognize new episodes. I want to be able to update the podcast, and just like how iTunes will be updated I want the page on the website to be updated as well. The 'podcast' page will most likely not be like a blog but have a Flash or Java script application that will pull the info from the podcast.xml file to show the episodes.

• Finding an alert in the middle of your javascript

  I was debugging a script injection issue the other day using some sample code with an alert in it. The alert was popping out meaning the code got executed leaving open the possibility for a hacker to put there some nasty malicious code. I knew my alert was being executed but didn’t know how. So I tried something that worked perfectly for this problem, replaced the native alert function with my own one. All I had to do in Chrome was open the javascript console and type: alert = function(msg){ console.log(msg); console.trace(); }; The next time the malicious code was executed, instead of the regular alert I got something similar to this:   alert("testing") testing console.trace() alert:2 (anonymous function):2 InjectedScript._evaluateOn:312 InjectedScript._evaluateAndWrap:294 InjectedScript.evaluate:288 undefined In my case I was able to see what was going on and find the offending function. This was tested on Firebug in Firefox and it works as.

• Central Exception Handler

  Recently I've been thinking about a general ExceptionHandler, that I could initialize once in my app context and inject it everywhere. The idea that it will have quite simple interface with just public void handle(Exception ex), and then according to exception type it should decide what to do, maybe just log it, or show an alert message to the user, or maybe kill the whole app. The question is, what is the prettiest way to write such handler without lots of instanceofs? Unfortunately googling gives me only the default exception handler for RuntimeException that was introduced in Java 5. My first idea is to create an enum, that will have Class field for exception type and it will return the appropriate execution point, for example a concrete exception handler that also implements the interface public void handle(Exception ex), but with the required casting already.

• Forked-daapd with alternative soundcard

  I am trying to configure forked-daapd on my computer, and everything goes well except that in configuration file I can not set a new value for the line corresponding to soundcard. This is the default code in the config file: #card = "default" I want to use a soundcard called "DG2", which is the soundcard no.1 and has a first device that ALSA recognizes as no.0. So, I change the line to the following: card = "hw:DG2,0" I restart the daapd service and the next time I play a file through iTune remote, I get a message in my server log file saying that it can not play the file because the device is busy. Any change in the device name will return a different error, saying that the device does not exist. I am pretty sure no other uses this external device, and I don't understand why I get this message. I have tried hwplug as well, with no result.

• Wifi won't enter working net after hard reboot

  I rebooted the hard way after my system jammed again because FF eats all the ram. (that's a different problem) I've always gotten away with it, but not this time. The system came up ok BUT it absolutely refuses to log onto the local house wifi net. I know the net is ok as the Windows box I'm writing this on is on it right now. I deleted the connection and rentered the password but it will not go on. /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state says everything is turned on. I know this is my fault but I'd really like to get back on the net. The machine is a Toshiba Satellite. Any suggestions?

• Suggestions on managing social media accounts

  As a company we now have Facebook, LinkedIN, Twitter and now Google+, is there a way to easily manage all these accounts without having to log into them individually? Things like posting content to each one is becoming a full time job in itself, is there a way to post once that in turn posts to all other accounts? I used to use http://ping.fm/ a long time ago, has there been any advancements in something similar to this? With friend lists, news feeds etc etc for each one, I wish there was a way to manage them all in one place with a service/tool!

• Resetting Your Oracle User Password with SQL Developer

  There’s nothing more annoying than having to email, call, or log a support ticket to have one of your accounts reset. This is no less annoying in the Oracle database. Those pesky security folks have determined that your password should only be valid for X days, and your time is up. Time to reset the password! Except…you can’t log into the database to reset your password. What now? Wait a second, look at this nifty thing I see in SQL Developer: Right click on my connection, reset password not available! Why not? The JDBC Driver Doesn’t Support This Operation We can’t make this call over the Oracle JDBC layer, because it hasn’t been implemented. However our primary interface, OCI, does indeed support this. In order to use the Oracle Call Interface (OCI), you need to have an Oracle Client on your machine. The good news is that this is fairly easy to get going. The Instant Client will do. You have two options, the full or ‘Lite’ Instant Clients. If you want SQL*Plus and the other client tools, go for the full. If you just want the basic drivers, go for the Lite. Either of these is fine, but mind the bit level and version of Oracle! Make sure you get a 32 bit Instant Client if you run 32 bit SQL Developer or 64 bit if you run 64 Here’s the download link What, you didn’t believe me? Mind the version of Oracle too! You want to be at the same level or higher of the database you’re working with. You can use a 11.2.0.3 client with 11.2.0.1 database but not a 10gR2 client with 11gR2 database. Clear as mud? Download and Extract Put it where you want – Program Files is as good as place as any if you have the rights. When you’re done, copy that directory path you extracted the archive to, because we’re going to add it to your Windows PATH environment variable. The easiest way to find this in Windows 7 is to open the Start dialog and type ‘path’. In Windows 8 you’ll cast your spell and wave at your screen until something happens. I recommend you put it up front so we find our DLLs first. Now with that set, let’s start up SQL Developer. Check the Connection Context menu again Bingo! What happened there? SQL Developer looks to see if it can find the OCI resources. Guess where it looks? That’s right, the PATH. If it finds what it’s looking for, and confirms the bit level is right, it will activate the Reset Password option. We have a Preference to ‘force’ an OCI/THICK connection that gives you a few other edge case features, but you do not need to enable this to activate the Reset Password. Not necessary, but won’t hurt anything either. There are a few actual benefits to using OCI powered connections, but that’s beyond the scope of today’s blog post…to be continued. Ok, so we’re ready to go. Now, where was I again? Oh yeah, my password has expired… Right click on your connection and now choose ‘Reset Password’ You’ll need to know your existing password and select a new one that meets your databases’s security standards. I Need Another Option, This Ain’t Working! If you have another account in the database, you can use the DBA Panel to reset a user’s password, or of course you can spark up a SQL*Plus session and issue the ALTER USER JEFF IDENTIFIED BY _________; command – but you knew this already, yes? I need more help ‘installing’ the Instant Client, help! There are lots and lots of resources out there on this subject. But I also know from personal experience that many of you have problems getting this to ‘work.’ The key things to remember is to download the right bit level AND make sure the client install directory is in your path. I know many folks that will just ‘install’ the Instant Client directly to one of their ‘bin’ type directories. You can do that if you want, but I prefer the cleaner method. Of course if you lack admin privs to change the PATH variable, that might be your only option. Or you could do what the original ORA- message indicated and ‘contact your DBA.’

  I have a site with a phpbb forum. I'm working on adding a dokuwiki wiki to the site, and I would like to integrate the two. The phpbb forum is running phpbb 3.0.8, and the dokuwiki installation is running 2011-05-25a "Rincewind". Basically what I want is: for users to be able to log into the dokuwiki wiki with their phpbb account. Users should only be able to register from the phpbb registration interface. Cookie integration would be nice, but is not required. Is there any way to do this?

• Remote Debug Windows Azure Cloud Service

It introduced a lot of cool features but one of it shocked most, which is the remote debug support for Windows Azure Cloud Service (a.k.a. WACS).   Live Debug is Nightmare for Cloud Application When we are developing against public cloud, debug might be the most difficult task, especially after the application had been deployed. In order to minimize the debug effort, Microsoft provided local emulator for cloud service and storage once the Windows Azure platform was announced. By using local emulator developers could be able run their application on local machine with almost the same behavior as running on Windows Azure, and that could be debug easily and quickly. But when we deployed our application to Azure, we have to use log, diagnostic monitor to debug, which is very low efficient. Visual Studio 2012 introduced a new feature named "anonymous remote debug" which allows any workstation under any user could be able to attach the remote process. This is less secure comparing the authenticated remote debug but much easier and simpler to use. Now in Windows Azure SDK 2.2, we could be able to attach our application from our local machine to Windows Azure, and it's very easy.   How to Use Remote Debugger First, let's create a new Windows Azure Cloud Project in Visual Studio and selected ASP.NET Web Role. Then create an ASP.NET WebForm application. Then right click on the cloud project and select "publish". In the publish dialog we need to make sure the application will be built in debug mode, since .NET assembly cannot be debugged in release mode. I enabled Remote Desktop as I will log into the virtual machine later in this post. It's NOT necessary for remote debug. And selected "advanced settings" tab, make sure we checked "Enable Remote Debugger for all roles". In WACS, a cloud service could be able to have one or more roles and each role could be able to have one or more instances. The remote debugger will be enabled for all roles and all instances if we checked. Currently there's no way for us to specify which role(s) and which instance(s) to enable. Finally click "publish" button. In the windows azure activity window in Visual Studio we can find some information about remote debugger. To attache remote process would be easy. Open the "server explorer" window in Visual Studio and expand "cloud services" node, find the cloud service, role and instance we had just published and wanted to debug, right click on the instance and select "attach debugger". Then after a while (it's based on how fast our Internet connect to Windows Azure Data Center) the Visual Studio will be switched to debug mode. Let's add a breakpoint in the default web page's form load function and refresh the page in browser to see what's happen. We can see that the our application was stopped at the breakpoint. The call stack, watch features are all available to use. Now let's hit F5 to continue the step, then back to the browser we will find the page was rendered successfully.   What Under the Hood Remote debugger is a WACS plugin. When we checked the "enable remote debugger" in the publish dialog, Visual Studio will add two cloud configuration settings in the CSCFG file. Since they were appended when deployment, we cannot find in our project's CSCFG file. But if we opened the publish package we could find as below. At the same time, Visual Studio will generate a certificate and included into the package for remote debugger. If we went to the azure management portal we will find there will a certificate under our application which was created, uploaded by remote debugger plugin. Since I enabled Remote Desktop there will be two certificates in the screenshot below. The other one is for remote debugger. When our application was deployed, windows azure system will open related ports for remote debugger. As below you can see there are two new ports opened on my application. Finally, in our WACS virtual machine, windows azure system will copy the remote debug component based on which version of Visual Studio we are using and start. Our application then can be debugged remotely through the visual studio remote debugger. Below is the task manager on the virtual machine of my WACS application.   Summary In this post I demonstrated one of the feature introduced in Windows Azure SDK 2.2, which is Remote Debugger. It allows us to attach our application from local machine to windows azure virtual machine once it had been deployed. Remote debugger is powerful and easy to use, but it brings more security risk. And since it's only available for debug build this means the performance will be worse than release build. • How do I set a touch listener in a child scene in AndEngine?

  In my game, I want to implement touch listener for my child scene objects. Basically I tried all the possible way to implement this that I have usually done for my normal scenes, but those methods do not work here. Could somebody provide some guidance for setting touch area listener in child scene? Here is my code: menuScene.setTouchAreaBindingEnabled(true); menuScene.registerTouchArea(resumeButtonSprite); menuScene.registerTouchArea(retryButtonSprite); menuScene.registerTouchArea(exitButtonSprite); menuScene.setOnAreaTouchListener(new IOnAreaTouchListener() { @Override public boolean onAreaTouched(TouchEvent pSceneTouchEvent, ITouchArea pTouchArea, float pTouchAreaLocalX, float pTouchAreaLocalY) { System.out.println("Touch"); return true; } }); In this code, menuScene was a child scene activity. Also after research I found that my engine was stopped while the child scene was activated so the touch event is not detected. I want to implement a pause menu in my game so any desirable solution for a pause menu implementation would help.

• USA keyboard layout keeps getting added on login

  I use the USA International keyboard layout. Every time I log in, the USA layout gets added to my list of layouts, which causes the keyboard layout indicator to be displayed. How can I stop the USA layout from being added? Additional info: I'm running Natty. Until recently, I had all four layout slots filled. Recently I changed from SCIM to iBus. With this change, I no longer need multiple layouts since iBus better handles my needs. So, I don't want both indicators (iBus and Keyboard layout) showing up.

• Long pause in pxe/preseed install

  I'm encountering a long pause during unattended (preseeded) install of precise server via pxe. The install eventually works, but appears to just sit there for 20 or 30 minutes after it authenticates the mirror. There is nothing in the logs during this time, even with full debug.
