  For any beginner in ASP.NET MVC the first disappointment is possibly the lack of any server controls. ASP.NET MVC divides the entire processing logic into three distinct parts namely model, view and controller. In the process views (that represent UI under MVC architecture) need to sacrifice three important features of web forms viz. Postbacks, ViewState and rich event model. Though server controls are not a recommended choice under ASP.NET MVC there are situations where you may need to use server controls. • Error pages in ASP.NET

  In ASP.NET you can retrieve the last unhandled exception via:(HttpContext.Current.)Server.GetLastError() // Server object is available as a property in Page and UserControl context This obviously only works in the same roundtrip. If you want to retrieve this information in your error page, you got a problem because the error page is not returned in the same roundtrip. The server responds with a redirect response and a new request to the error page is automatically sent. A common workaround would be to store the exception in your Session state from the Application_Error event in Global.asax. From ASP.NET 3.5 you can configure the redirect mode for error pages: <customErrors mode="On" defaultRedirect="~/Error.aspx" redirectMode="ResponseRewrite" /> This way the redirect response is not sent and the error page is returned right away. That implies that the browser is not aware of a page change and cannot reflect it in the address bar, so your original URL is not replaced with the URL of the error page, which might be what you actually want…

• Adding Custom Pipeline code to the Pipeline Component Toolbox

  Add ... "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\SDK\v2.0\Bin\GacUtil.exe" /nologo /i "$(TargetPath)" /f  xcopy "$(TargetPath)" "C:\Program Files\Microsoft BizTalk Server 2006\Pipeline Components" /d /y to the 'Post Build event command line' for the pipeline support component project in visual studio. This will automatically put the support dll in the GAC and BizTalk’s Pipeline component directory on building the solution/project. Build the project. Right Click on title bar and select Choose items. Click on the BizTalk Pipeline Components tab and select the new component from the list. If it is not available in the list Browse to the BizTalk pipeline component folder (C:\Program Files\Microsoft BizTalk Server 2006\Pipeline Components) and select the dll.

• Software rendering 3d triangles in the proper order

  I'm implementing a basic 3d rendering engine in software (for education purposes, please don't mention to use an API). When I project a triangle from 3d to 2d coordinates, I draw the triangle. However, it's in a random order and so whatever gets drawn last draws on top of all other triangles (which might be in front of triangles it shouldn't be in front of)... Intuitively, seems I need to draw the triangles in the correct order. So I can calculate all their distances to the camera and sort by that. The objects furthest away get drawn last. Is this the proper way to render triangles? If I'm sorting all the objects, this is n*log(n) now. Is this the most efficient way to do this?

• Chromium/Chrome tabs crashes on Ubuntu/Edubuntu 12.04.3

  For some reason the tabs of Chromium and Chrome have started to crash (He's dead Jim) when running on Ubuntu or Edubuntu 12.04.3. It seems to happen only when I log in. I tried the browsers on Ubuntu 13.10 and everything worked fine. Any suggestions? Ps. The browser doesn't crash, just the tabs, and I can open new ones (but they also crash after a while). • Data Storage Options

  When I was working as a website designer/engineer I primarily used databases for storage of much of my dynamic data. It was very easy and convenient to use this method and seemed like a standard practice from my research on the matter. I'm now working on shifting away from websites and into desktop applications. What are the best practices for data storage for desktop applications? I ask because I have noticed that most programs I use on a personal level don't appear to use a database for data storage unless its embedded in the program. (I'm not thinking of an application like a word processor where it makes sense to have data stored in individual files as defined by the user. Rather I'm thinking of something more along the lines of a calendar application which would need to store dates and event info and such where accessing that information would be much easier if stored in a database... at least as far as my experience would indicate.) • Why there are many guest accounts?

  After I saw this answer, I realized that there are many guest accounts on my system: grep guest /etc/passwd guest-jzXeRx:x:117:127:Guest,,,:/tmp/guest-jzXeRx:/bin/false guest-l5dAPU:x:118:128:Guest,,,:/tmp/guest-l5dAPU:/bin/false guest-FdSAkw:x:119:129:Guest,,,:/tmp/guest-FdSAkw:/bin/false guest-eBU0cU:x:121:131:Guest,,,:/tmp/guest-eBU0cU:/bin/false Moreover, in this moment there is nobody logged as guest, but if somebody will login as guest, a new guest account is created - why, since there are already other guest accounts? After the new guest will log out, his account will be deleted. But why the other guest accounts remain? For what use/purpose? It doesn't mind me at all this guest account, but I want to know if it is okay to delete them manually.

  I have a MySql database where part of it handles instrument's depth of water. Each instrument has its own formula of calculation how depth the water when the operator collect the reading I stored the formula for each instrument in database/MySql. Example formula: [55-57] this is the simple minus operation, where the number is actually represent the id of a row. How do I represent those number with id of a row and later convert it to javascript readable code. I simply want to do keyup event where everytime user key in something into text field then the other part of HTML would reflect changes based on formula that I fetched from database FYI, I'm using BackboneJS together with RequireJS

• File Transfer using RDP

  I often use RDP to log into servers.   A couple of issues I have had is that its a pain to get files onto the server from my PC at times, and, if there is something missing from the servers windows install, I can’t simply pop the DVD into remote server in some unknown location on the internet somewhere. The other day I was curious if RDP actually had anything…since it did support shared clipboards, so I went for a look through the options and low and behold, *hidden* away….. Select Options… Go to the “Local Resources” Tab, then where it has “Local devices and resources” it sneakily has a “More…” button. Which then displays a drive selection box.  Select the drive you want …. Then on your server you will get….. Nice.  That is useful.

• Desktop shortcut to create a new desktop shortcut doesn't do anything

  It's weird that creating desktop shortcuts is currently so primitive. I found the following: Create Shortcut / launcher on Desktop in Ubuntu 12.04 That helps. However, if there's something wrong with the shortcut, it just doesn't do anything. For instance, I tried to create a shortcut for this command line to create a shortcut. When I double-click it, it just does nothing. This is the resulting text of my "Create Desktop Shortcut.desktop" file on the desktop: [Desktop Entry] Version=1.0 Type=Application Terminal=false Icon[en_CA]=gnome-panel-launcher Exec=/usr/bin/gnome-desktop-item-edit ~/Desktop/ --create-new Name[en_CA]=Create Desktop Shortcut Name=Create Desktop Shortcut Icon=gnome-panel-launcher As I said, when I double-click this, or right-click it and select Open, nothing happens. Is there a log file where something about this would be written to?

• Custom Xsession with Gnome visuals

  I'm trying to create a kiosk PC only for web browsing using this tutorial as a reference (only difference - I'm using Firefox instead of Chromium) It is working correctly in principle (only FF window opens when I log in using the Kiosk session) but it looks, well, super ugly. The scrollbar and right-click context menus look like from the 1990s - gray and boxy. How could I modify the session to get Gnome-like scrollbars/menus without the whole Gnome desktop (top/bottom panel etc)? • FIX adapter for StreamInsight

  Over the last couple of month, Rapid Addition, a leading FIX and FAST solutions provider for the financial services industry, has been working closely with the StreamInsight team to enable StreamInsight Complex Event Processing queries to receive input feeds from Rapid Addition’s FIX engine and to send result events back into FIX. Earlier today, Toby Corballis from Rapid Addition blogged about these capabilities here on HedgeHogs. We are very excited to demonstrate these capabilities at the SIFMA conference in New York. • Architecture Forum in the North 2010 - Hosted by Black Marble

  On Thursday the 8th of December I attended the "Architecture Forum in the North 2010" hosted by Black Marble. The third time this annual event has been held, it was pitched as featuring Black Marble and Microsoft UK architecture experts focusing on “Tools and Methods for Architects.... a unique opportunity to provide IT Managers, IT and software architects from Northern businesses the chance to learn about the latest technologies and best practices from Microsoft in the field of Architecture....insightful information about the latest techniques, demonstrating how with Microsoft’s architecture tools and technologies you can address your current business needs." Following a useful overview of the Architecture features of Visual Studio 2010, the rest of the day was given over to various features and ways to make use of Microsoft's Azure offerings.  While I did feel that a wider spread of technologies could have been covered (maybe a bit of Sharepoint or BizTalk even), the technological and architectural overviews of the Azure platform were well presented, informative and useful. The day was well organised and all those involved were friendly and approachable for questions and discussions.  If you are in "the North" and get a chance to attend next year I would highly recommend it.

• XAML2CPP 1.0.1.0

  I upgraded XAML2CPP to fix some bugs and support some new features that will be used in my next tutorial step (that I hope to publish very soon!). Bug fixed: the listbox selection changed event was generated with an incorrect prototype events generated by the XAML tree root element (UserControl) were not handled. New features: XAML2CPP generates panels (dynamically generated XAML subtrees that may be added to a page) and user controls (those will be the object of my next post, stay tuned!). XAML2CPPXRValue class has been added to XAML2CPPbase.h. This class will allow single-line declaration of XRValue objects (I’m lazy!) and destroys automatically objects and string XRValues when the object itself is destroyed.
