• glx not working, optirun works, gnome in fallback mode

  It all started when I installed nvidia's own driver. Uninstalling it and reverting back to nvidia-current didn't solve the problem, so I have been playing with this for a while. Now nvidia-current seems to be functional. It seems glx support is missing, and my intel graphics is not responding. gnome loads only in fallback mode. • An error when installing MVVM Light templates for VS10 Express

  If you tried to install the Visual Studio 2010 Express project and item templates of MVVM Light V3 SP1 (with the Windows Phone tools hotfix), you may have encountered an error when unzipping the package, telling you that a file was corrupted. This error was reported to me a couple of times, and I was able to reproduce the issue. I just published a new version that takes care of this issue. If you encountered that error when installing, please download the new version and try again. Note that the error was only there for the Visual Studio 2010 Express version of the templates. Choose a concise but meaningful title but avoid words like "urgent" Post to the correct section of the forum - some people specialise in a particular section of a given forum Make it clear that you have already made an effort to answer yourself. Summerise the environmental context of your question e.g. If using SQL then state the version e.g. SQLExpress 2008 If you need to post a code or markup sample, tidy it up by removing extraneous blank lines and set the tab spacing to 2 rather than 4. Take your time composing the question so that it is set out as clearly as possible. Remember that the majority of people providing answers do so in their own time.   I've created a bootable memory stick on a Windows computer, and tested it on an HP PC. It's made from a 64-bit image of Ubuntu 11.10, downloaded from http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download. When I boot from this memory stick, there is some kind of boot menu, where I can choose to run Ubuntu from the memory stick, or install. I select Run from memory stick. (the words may be wrong here, I'm taking it from memory.) From this point, the screen is black (but backlighted), and I can't do anything but turn off the computer. It gets hot, too. Has anyone been more successful than me? Are there known issues? The computer is a 15 inch MacBook Pro 5,1 (unibody, late 2008), 4 GB memory.

• What is the best practice for website design and markup now that mobile browsers are common?

  Back in 2008, smartphones were a small market and it was commonplace for sites to be designed for a fixed width - say, 900px or 960px - with the page centered if the browser window was larger. Many designers said fluid width was better, but since user screens typically varied between 1024x768 and 1920x1080, fluid width allowed longer line length than is optimal for ease of reading, and so many sites (including Stack Exchange) use fixed width. Now that mobile devices are common, what is the the best approach to support both desktop and mobile browsers? Establish a separate mobile site (e.g: mobile.example.com) Serve a different CSS to mobile devices; if so how? Server-side browser sniffing, or a @media rule? Use Javascript or something to adapt the website dynamically to the client? Should all websites be expected to be responsive? Some kind of fluid layout Something else?

• Where to find PHP version usage stats?

  My original question was: what percentage of sites are using php 5.4.x? (As it has some very interesting new features.) With secondary questions like how many of the cheap web hosting places have upgraded, which versions of the linux distros include it, etc. But I'm coming up blanks. http://php.net/usage.php stops at July 2007, and the nexen.net website seems to have stopped in 2008. At SecuritySpace they only list the web servers, not php versions. The TIOBE link isn't what I'm after (it doesn't -- and couldn't -- break down by version number. I thought php.net might show download numbers, but I cannot see them anywhere. I kind of answered the distro question, but it requires a lot of clicking around at distrowatch.com. E.g. I see here that Ubuntu offers php 5.4.6 in the latest snapshot, but the latest release (Ubuntu 12.04) has 5.3.10.

• Programming Challenges for a beginner

  I'm in an unusual situation. A colleague of mine wants to "learn programming" and, being a developer I have been tasked with teaching him "programming". Personally, I am self taught, and have never taught any sort of skill to anybody else before so I am not quite sure where to start. Also, I still have a heck of a lot to learn myself (although don't we all)! I write in C# but is C# a good language for a beginner? I was thinking that Visual Basic .Net would be a better starting point, so was considering getting him setup with Visual Studio Express 2010, teaching him a few basics (variables, functions, classes etc) then finding some programming challenges and asking him to work through these. Does anybody have a good source of these sorts of challenges? Also is this a good strategy? Finally, what are your experiences of teaching programming to somebody else and what advice would you give?

  I need to purchase a single license for Visual Studio Professional with MSDN. The MSDN buy site (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/bb841434.aspx) does not allow purchases from India. It directs Indians to purchase from resellers. I contacted Microsoft and they sent me a link to a list of resellers http://www.microsoft.com/india/originalsoftware/business/retailStore1.aspx Many of these resellers do not even have a website. Many of them do not exist at the addresses mentioned (they have moved). Microsoft support personnel also seem very cagey about releasing any information. They do not even read the mail. They simply resend their canned response with the same link. There are many resellers (not mentioned in the microsoft page) who are selling MSDN subscriptions. Are they legitimate? I got the suggestion to use info.window after initializing SDL and filling the info variable with data by calling SDL_GetWindowWMInfo(); included in the header file SDL_syswm.h. My compiler (visual studio 2008 professional edition) gives the following error: 226) : error C2039: 'window' : is not a member of 'SDL_SysWMinfo' 1 include\sdl_syswm.h(173) : see declaration of 'SDL_SysWMinfo' Any help appreciated.   I work on a team which employs many of the extreme programming practices. We've gone to great lengths to utilize paired programming as much as possible. Unfortunately the practice sometimes breaks down and becomes ineffective. As you can imagine Googling for variations on parallel pair programming nets mostly results which relate to parallel programming.
