• Trouble with HP printer

  I have a HP Photosmart C3180 (it's a printer/scanner). For some reason, it recently stopped working. The power light is blinking (I think all the other lights are one, but don't remember, I'm not there right now), and the only way to turn it off is to unplug it. It won't print anything, and when you put a page in the tray it sucks it in without printing anything on it and stops when the paper is on its way out (Again, I don't remember how we managed to get it out, sorry). This printer is hooked up to a computer running XP, but it doesn't work either when printing from the network. Weirdly, the scanner works fine. Do you have any ideas on what could be the problem? Could it be a driver problem? By the way, sorry if the question lacks a bit of detail. I don't know much about printers, and I don't have it here so I can't remember exactly all the details. If needed I can update the question tonight or tomorrow.

• how to fix asyncmac.sys infection

  AVG anti-virus tells me that there is a virus in my asyncmac.sys. I tried to overwrite it with a copy of asyncmac.sys from another computer (making sure that it was the same version of Windows XP, but I was still nervous that I was going to break something), but when I reboot, I get the same virus warning. If I try to delete the file Windows (or somebody) automatically and immediately puts it back. I get a blue-screen death if I try to boot in safe mode. I tried to do a system restore to before I had the virus, but it tells me that it can't restore because nothing has changed. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

  I have a strange error in Windows 7 when I want to execute/open a file inside ZIP archive. I have two files: File1.dwg File2.dwg The archive is not corrupted ( I checked with 7zip utility ) When I double click on the any file inside ZIP (I opened ZIP with Windows Explorer), the error occured: Ok. If I open zip file with 7-zip or WinRAR every file could be opened(executed) without error and the AutoCAD is opened to see the dwg content. Why in Windows ZIP ? • Hide Outlook envelope in system tray

  When I get a new email in Outlook 2003 I get two notifications; one is the envelope in the system tray, and one is the fading noticiation message in the lower right corner. If I click the notification message, the envelope will never disappear, even if all emails are read. If Outlook is restarted the envelope disappears. If I right click the envelope and choose "Hide envelope" I have to go into the settings and set the Show envelope option to true again to see the envelope. I want the envelope, but only when there are any unread emails in my inbox. How do I fix this?

• My PC becomes very slow after changing page file in XP.

  Hello there, I have 5 partitions in my computer (C, D, E, F, G), and C: is the system partition. Recently I changed the page file setting to use 768-768 MB from the G:, without changing the C: default value (256-512 MB). Everything runs fine until I rebooted my PC. I unset the G:'s page file before I rebooted my PC. Well, after I rebooted my PC, my XP becomes VERY slow. damn slow. I don't know how long I wasted to wait for the boot screen to disappear. (Well, maybe about 1-3 mins. Normally it is under 10 secs) and when I tried to enter the desktop, it just like using a computer without a VGA card, or VGA driver installed. Very slow. Any suggestions to fix this problem? Because I hate to repair-install my XP =\ Thanks.

• External USB HD with -optional- mains?

  Hi, I'm Christmas-present-buying, and I'd appreciate recommendations for a USB HD with an optional mains power input. I've hunted, but can't find all the information I want (partially due to sketchy product specifications). Background: This is for a digital TV which I do not own, and so I'd like to get it correct first time. The TV has a USB port to allow recording straight to disk, but the manuals don't say how much power can be drawn through the USB port. The manual's instructions state, possibly generically, to plug the drive in before connecting to the TV. Ideally I'd like a small (2.5"?) drive which can draw power over USB, with an mains power input if it turns out the USB port on the TV doesn't offer enough juice. The ideal is to use one cable, two max. A powered USB hub would introduce too much clutter. I've spotted that the LaCie Petit drives have what appears to be an additional power input, but I'm not even sure from the specs what that is. And the device doesn't ship with a mains adapter. Suggestions?

• Reducing video mode switching during Linux boot

  When I boot up my desktop computer, which only has Linux on it, the video mode and/or console font gets switched four times: When GRUB starts, it switches from 80x25 text to a graphical mode so it can draw a pretty background behind its menu; GRUB then goes back to 80x25 text after I pick something from the menu; When the KMS driver for my video card loads, it switches to a much higher-resolution text mode (I don't know if this is a hardware text mode or not); Finally X starts and it goes graphics and stays that way. I think this last switch does not change the resolution of the video mode, only the graphicalness. I'd like to get rid of as many of these mode switches as possible. Ideally, when GRUB takes over from the BIOS it would go directly to the same high-resolution text mode that the KMS driver selects, and the display would stay in that mode till X starts and brings up graphics. I am under the impression that this is possible by mucking with the kernel command line and/or the GRUB console module load parameters, but I don't know the details. GRUB 1.98+20100706, kernel 2.6.32.15 using Nouveau video drivers. Distro is Debian unstable. Please no answers that involve recompiling anything or cobbling together bleeding-edge kernel/driver combinations, I don't care enough about this to go to that much trouble. EDIT: Tobu suggests setting GRUB_GFXMODE to the full pixel resolution of the monitor, and GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep to avoid the mode switch after the menu goes away. This does part of what I want, but winds up being worse overall. There's no mode switch after the menu, but there's still a painfully-slow screen repaint (I should probably just give up on GRUB's gfxmode, it's waaaay too slow at 1920x1200).   I have a windows server 2003 computer that is accessed by remote desktop connection. To access the server all you need to know is the IP address of the computer. I want to limit the computers that can access the windows server computer to authorized computers only. The authorized computers won't have static IPs, so I cannot limit them on basis of IP address. Can I limit them on basis of MAC id perhaps? I won't mind using third party solution like Teamviewer or Logmein etc. So How can I solve this problem? EDIT: Found a possible solution in team viewer. Team viewer creates a unique partner ID for the computer it is installed on. It has an option for allowing only authorized partner IDs to access the computer. Problem solved.

I tried the Windows Firewall: Except it blocks IP sub-protocols (e.g. TCP, UDP, encapsulated IPv6, GRE), rather than blocking IPv4 itself. In other words, I need to block IPv4: IPv4/TCP IPv4/UDP IPv4/ICMPv4 IPv4/GRE IPv4/L2TP while allowing IPv6: IPv6/TCP IPv6/UDP IPv6/ICMPv6 IPv6/GRE IPv6/L2TP Can I block a program from using IPv4?   Currently working on a customized webpage that shows the available projects I have in Trac (1.0.1). I am using mod_python to connect the trac interface. I found a standard page for this, but it didn't show listing of repositories. The page showed some variables to link to the different projects, but I can't find variables to the different repositories inside the projects. • Export a single layer as an image in Photoshop

  I have a lot of designers send me layered PSDs of their designs and I need to break out the pieces of the designs to place on web pages. I can do a decent number of things in Photoshop, but I'm hardly efficient with it. My old way of just copying the image that's in a layer and pasting into a new image seems to take forever as I screw around with cropping and such. I've got Photoshop CS5, so I don't need external software to do anything, but I just need to figure out how to take a single layer, that may hold something small like an icon, and export it as a PNG or JPG. I am aware of the script called "Export Layers to Files" but it took about an hour and exported ALL of my layers to a huge number of files. I wasn't looking for a solution that broad. Is there an easy way to do this?

• My internet connection just got really slow - How can I troubleshoot it?

  A few days ago my connection became really slow. I have DSL which should be 3mb down and 768k up. I'm lucky if I get 768k down and 200k up. It sucks. I called my ISP, Verizon and they did some sort of line test and told me the problem was on my end. I rebooted my modem several times, like they told me. I'm not really sure why I even bothered calling them, the guy on the other end was just reading stuff out of a notebook - pretty useless. So, I checked my network traffic in windows resource monitor, and there doesn't seem to be anything there hogging the bandwidth. What else could be slowing my connection down on my PC? on my router? Something else?

• Concatenate cells that change daily automatically?

  I use concatenate to pull data together from different cells in my spreadsheet. Since my data changes daily, I want the formula to also change daily without having to manually input the new cell in the concatenate formula. I am looking for a way to do this but not sure how. Can anyone out there help me out please!? I appreciate the assistance in advance! Maybe this will help to explain what I need. I have a row of data from D4:AH4 that I insert daily based on the new day. When I use the concatenate and us the following formula: =CONCATENATE(TEXT('Raw Data'!B4,"m/d")," ",TEXT('Raw Data'!C4,"")," ", TEXT('Raw Data'!E4,"0.0%"))... E4 being the cell that changes daily where next day would be F4, G4, etc... All other parts of the formula will stay the same. I hope this helps! Thanks! :)

  They had installed some modified edubuntu's at school... So i have some questions about setting some things up: How we can play HD videos ? They are made for windows machines and are in .wmv format but we need to play them on our multimedia class but don't know how - which player, which codecs etc. How to edit properly the /etc/apt/sources file ? Anything we try to install via apt-get it just says that E:\ is not available. Please tell me which repositories to put in there so we could be able to install some tools. Where are usually viruses/trojans put in ubuntu ? I mean in which directories ? Because our computers are behaving really slow and we need to check for some malware manually - we are not even allowed to install any kind of AV software. So tell me the usual directories and places for hiding such files, how are they hiddem, how to recognize them etc. Any others nice tricks/tips that we need to know. Thank you very much in advance.

• Windows 7, file properties, date modified, how do you show seconds?

  Anyone know a way to immediately show the seconds of a file's date modified property in the GUI? So if you create a file, any file in any directory, right-click and choose Properties, the date modified (if it's recent) will say something like "dd/mm/yyy hh:mm, one minute ago" - reminder this is in Windows 7. Windows XP did it normally. Then they changed something. If you wait a while, eventually you'll see the seconds, I'm not sure how long a while is, but this is incredibly annoying if you want to troubleshoot something that relies on the seconds of timestamps... is there a setting? registry key I can change perhaps? I'm literally using Chrome, pasting in the path of the directory to be able to see the seconds quickly (as a workaround) but would be nice to be able to use Win7.
