  • What's the Minimum System Spec Recommended For Developer Laptop

    I'll be regularly running Visual Studio 2010 Professional, SQLServer Express, Office and at least 1 virtual environment running a Linux Distro. I want the machine to be snappy and responsive even when doing a reasonable amount of Development work. I want to spend what it takes for this, but I don't want to go overboard spending more than I need to. I won't be playing many games or graphics processing so i won't need a monster of a machine. Any recommendations?

  • External USB HD issues with a twist (works on Windows7 but not XP)

    I have this older external USB HD, 160 GB. I was using it to copy my Steam games to another computer. On the source computer, Windows 7 64-bit, everything worked fine. Drive reported no errors, had no hiccups, etc. Plugging it into the Windows XP 32-bit computer, it worked fine for looking through the files, moving files around on it (no real reading/writing, just modifying the filesystem table). However, when copying files from it to my internal HD, after a couple seconds to tens of minutes (seemingly random times), the USB device becomes unrecognized and it reports a delayed write error. Events in system log go like this, chronologically: (number times displayed)xSource (Event ID): "message" 2xdisk (51): An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk1\D during a paging operation. 1xftdisk (57): The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur. 1xApplication popup (26): Windows - Delayed Write Failed : Windows was unable to save all the data for the file E:\$Mft. The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere. 1xntfs (50): {Delayed Write Failed} Windows was unable to save all the data for the file . The data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere. These repeat for a while, then there is 10+ disk messages or ftdisk messages. Other notes: This occurs on random files at random times. This problem cannot be replicated on the Windows 7 source machine when copying from the HD to a different location on its local disk chkdsk /f was run and found no errors. chkdsk /f/r has the delayed write issue. drive was set to quick removal. Setting to performance in device manager yielded same result I am not writing anything to the USB external drive, so I am not sure why there is even a delayed write error (writing file access times?) local Windows XP was chkdsk'd without problems Windows XP machine has no problems with other USB HD's Various USB ports were attempted Rebooting did not help Occurs with SyncToy as well as windows explorer SMART status is good on both local drive and the external one Lack of gaming is making me cranky

  • Malware Defense Shows Up in PlayOn Settings/Logs Although System Has Been Thoroughly Cleaned

    I was hit really hard by some nasty malware: Malware Defense. I was doing something I should not have been doing when I got it (surfing Pirate Bay for TV shows). It locked up my system and I had to reboot in safe mode. I was able to shut down the process and remove it using a malware killer tool. I then installed, after my machine was cleaned up a bit, Clamwin, Malwarebytes, and another AV tool. I cleaned the heck out of my system. Simultaneously, while this was going on, I was having trouble with my media-server, PlayOn. This tool is great, but has some bugs. One in particular is that it will not function well with AV software running. I found a way to allow the new AV software to run while using PlayOn, but it still says I have Malware Defense on. Firstly, Malware Defense is long gone. I cleaned all remnants from my registry and scoured my system with the above tools multiple times. PlayOn is getting some information that I have this crap installed on my system, but it's not. The system runs OK, but not optimally. I have a feeling it is causing my streaming to be interrupted sometimes. How is it that I can't even find Malware Defense on my system if I tried but yet somehow PlayOn is getting a finger print of it somewhere? I have gone back and forth with MediaMall to no avail. I kind of just gave up, because the streaming works OK. BTW, I also uninstalled/reinstalled PlayOn several times, reverted back to previous versions, etc. The only thing I haven't done is reformat my disk and reinstall Windows. I really don't want to do this if there is another way to remove this little print. Any ideas?

    I have extended a webapplication in a farm. main server vsmoss1 where i did vsmoss1 ->webapplication(80) vm.com -> extended web app(of above one)anonymous WFE server name vsmoss2 WFE server name vsmoss3 i have load balanced it to got to vsmoss2 and vsmoss3 when someone hits vm.com when i hit vm.com it works fine without authentication(shows content query webpart also on my page) I know there is no need to do that but when I hit vsmoss2 and vsmoss3 it shows me error on my content query webpart ....any solution for that? Finding this strange tried this : I closed both extended webapp in vsmoss2 and vsmoss3 result: site is up and running but this time with authentication I closed both extended and main webapplication site in vsmoss2 and vsmoss3 is down I closed main webapplication in vsmoss2 and vsmoss3 site is up and running without authentication Anyone is having idea why this is showing behaviour like this...?

  • Application Does Not Start in Windows 7

    I recently installed a new 60GB SSD as my primary hard drive and re-installed Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I then installed SSD Fresh from Abelssoft to optimize Windows to run on the SSD. It seemed to install okay, but when I try to run the utility, its splash screen appears briefly before it quietly closes. No errors are displayed; the utility just fails to launch. I have run SSD Fresh on another SSD-equipped Windows 7 Pro x64 computer in the past without any problems. Does anyone know what might be preventing the program from running? I tried running sfc /scannow from the command line (with administrator privileges), shutting down the Spybot Resident, and disabling the firewall and virus scanner. I also tried running the tool as administrator; I even tried reinstalling it, running the installer as administrator. No luck.     I've looked on Asus's website, but they don't make it easy to understand what the differences are, and there's so many models to choose from! It's all spiel, and endless specs. How is anybody supposed to rifle through so much detail in order to make note of minor differences?     I'm batch transcoding some 50 GB of video files on a USB hard disk which is connected to a wlan router. The drive is mapped as a network drive on my Windows 7 laptop. The speed handicap of the wlan causes some parts of the processing to become unnecessarily slow, so I would like to do the following with PowerShell: List the names of the files on the network drive to be transcoded Copy the first file to a temporary folder on my laptop Simultaneously Transcode the file in the folder Begin copying the next file from the network drive to the temporary folder After transcoding and copy have both ended, Delete the file which has been transcoded from the temporary folder Begin transcoding next file in the temporary folder Loop until all files have been processed How would I be able to do this with PowerShell? The multitasking part is an obstacle for my skill/persistence combination.

There's no documentation in the inventory of it but it responds to nslookup, ping, and i can log onto it and edit it's files. However, we have no idea where in the building it is. Anyone have any good ideas for finding it outside of making it beep repetitively and annoying people while i run around looking for it?

    I'm looking for a backup media manager that will keep me up-to-date on where my backups are, how they're stored and what's stored on them. I want it to be able to do and keep track of the following: my used backup media (e.g. DVD1, DVD2) my backed-up assets in high-level (such as "family-photos from 2003", "laptop drivers") details of the assets ("Ninas Birthday 2003") where the backup media is currently stored when the media has been burned (to re-burn in case of media degeneration). It should be possible to navigate back and forth between media and assets. I also thought about marking assets as "deprecated". If all assets on a media are deprecated, the program should tell me so I don't have to keep it any more. Does anyone know of a program with this feature-set? Or will I have to start my own reference in something like Access?

    I just finished the install and setup process of systemd on my arch-linux system (2012.09.07). I uninstalled initscripts (and removed the configuration files). What I want to do is create a service that can be started and stopped by a non-root user. The service is to start a detached screen session running rtorrent. However I want every user on the system who has set this service to start (enabled) to have a particular instance started for them specifically. How would one go about doing this? I remember reading that systemd supports user instances of services, however I have been unable to find any information on how to set this up, or whether it relates to what I am looking for.   • How do I calculate clock speed in multi-core processors?

    Is it correct to say, for example, that a processor with four cores each running at 3GHz is in fact a processor running at 12GHz? I once got into a "Mac vs. PC" argument (which by the way is NOT the focus of this topic... that was back in middle school) with an acquaintance who insisted that Macs were only being advertised as 1Ghz machines because they were dual-processor G4s each running at 500MHz. At the time I knew this to be hogwash for reasons I think are apparent to most people, but I just saw a comment on this website to the effect of "6 cores x 0.2GHz = 1.2Ghz" and that got me thinking again about whether there's a real answer to this. So, this is a more-or-less philosophical/deep technical question about the semantics of clock speed calculation. I see two possibilities: Each core is in fact doing x calculations per second, thus the total number of calculations is x(cores). Clock speed is rather a count of the number of cycles the processor goes through in the space of a second, so as long as all cores are running at the same speed, the speed of each clock cycle stays the same no matter how many cores exist. In other words, Hz = (core1Hz+core2Hz+...)/cores.

  • Make isolinux 4.0.3 chainload itself

    I have a bootable iso which boots into isolinux 4.0.3 and I want to make it chainload itself (my actual goal is to chainload isolinux.bin v4.0.1-debian, which should start up the Ubuntu10.10 Live CD, but for now I just want to make it chainload itself). I can't get isolinux to chainload any isolinux.bin, no matter what version. It either freezes or shows a "checksum error" message. I'm using VMWare to test the iso. Things I have tried: .com32 /boot/isolinux/chain.c32 /boot/isolinux/isolinux-debug.bin (chainload self) this shows Loading the boot file... Booting... ISOLINUX 4.03 2010-10-22 Copyright (C) 1994-2010 H.   • Firefox appending .xls extension to .xlsx files

    We are serving files with the .xlsx (excel 2007/2010) extension. IE, Chrome, Safari all download the file and open excel just fine. Firefox is being stupid. For some reason it's appending .xls to the extension. I found this: https://support.mozilla.com/bs/questions/758363 However, the instructions weren't very specific and completely unclear to me. How can I tell Firefox not to screw with the file extension? Thanks,

  • How to edit semi-plaintext file and maintaining character structure?

    I am using a software (Groupmail from Infacta) that uses exact / absolute %PATHS% for saving some settings in specific semi-plaintext file. This is a really bad idea because you can't move to USER folder, or like my case it does not work after migrating to a new computer with different language. For example: C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Local Settings\Application Data\Infacta is different than C:\Documents and Settings\USER\Configuración local\Datos de programa\Infacta Obviously, the software does not work well. I tried to solve this using Find/Replace the new PATH with Notepad++. While the Groupmail software loads well and shows settings correctly, the software fails when trying to save data on that file. I guess this is because length or number of replaced characters is different and also it corrupt the file. Please could you help me to edit this file maintaining file integrity / structure?

(rar, 7zip, winzip etc) Is there some way to extend this feature (by means of plug-ins etc) to search within Pdf & office files (doc, ppt), Or any other similar unzip tool which has this feature? (Extracting the entire archive & searching using Windows search is always one option)

  • USB driver problems (Windows 8.1)

    Every time I turn on my laptop the USB ports don't work and the drivers have an error. In order to fix this I'm forced to start the Device Manager, uninstall all the USB drivers, open the Control Panel, click Find and fix problems (under System and Security), click Configure a device (under Hardware and Sound) and then when that window pops up just hit Next until I can see my USB drivers reinstalled and working in the Device Manager window under Universal Serial Bus controllers. I found this way to fix it but I would like a permanent solution so that I don't have to do this every time I turn on the machine. Any ideas? When I bought the machine it had Window 7 installed but I later upgraded it to Windows 8.0 and then 8.1 after that.
