  • Python's asyncore to periodically send data using a variable timeout. Is there a better way?

    I wanted to write a server that a client could connect to and receive periodic updates without having to poll. The problem I have experienced with asyncore is that if you do not return true when dispatcher.writable() is called, you have to wait until after the asyncore.loop has timed out (default is 30s). The two ways I have tried to work around this is 1) reduce timeout to a low value or 2) query connections for when they will next update and generate an adequate timeout value. However if you refer to 'Select Law' in 'man 2 select_tut', it states, "You should always try to use select() without a timeout." Is there a better way to do this? Twisted maybe? I wanted to try and avoid extra threads.   • How do you get the viewport scale after pinch/zoom on an iPhone web app?

    Does anyone know how to get the size in pixels or scale value of the viewport after a user has pinched or double tapped to zoom in/out on a page in JavaScript? I've tried using window.innerWidth but I've had mixed results. Sometimes it seems to accurately give the number of pixels the viewport is showing, however, if I zoom way in on a page and then do a large pinch to zoom back out, window.innerWidth will be around 600-700 even though it is only showing ~200px of the page. The page is only 400px wide and it didn't show the checkered "you've gone too far" background you see when you zoom out beyond the page size. If I do small pinches to zoom in and out, window.innerWidth appears to work just fine. Unfortunately I can't rely on a user only making small pinch gestures :) I've also tried to use the scale property on the gesture event object, but I've found that unreliable because you don't always know the initial scale when you reload the page or use back/forward buttons to navigate to it even when using the meta tag to specify it. Ultimately, I'm trying to make an app that is aware of when a user is trying to zoom out beyond the maximum zoom level so if there is another way to do this I'm interested in hearing about it :) Here's the code I'm using to get the innerWidth: document.body.addEventListener('gestureend', function (evt) { console.log(window.innerWidth); // inaccurate when doing large pinch gestures }, false); Thanks!

    I have a client program based on LibCurl. I have run into a situation where on some occasions a program on the server runs longer than the configured IIS timeout. IIS then terminates the program and returns a 502 error status to the client. I have added code to the client to capture this issue. Now, I need to find a way to prove that the change will work. I haven't been able to reliably reproduce the issue, so don't have a good test case. Any suggestions?

    I'm trying to transfer a site from one hosting company to another. I was using 000webhost until the client had hosting and a domain. Now that the client has their domain and hosting, using FatCow.com, I can not for the life of me, debug my PHP code. I'm not getting any errors. I have a successful DB connection. If you procedurally display data, it works, but when I try to use my original objects, something is breaking and just returns "0:". I have all errors on.     Hi...all experts! I'm a newbie to iphone developer. Well, currently, I'm developing iphone for Location Based Service. That application need to have these functions. 1. hierarchical tree-view on navigation bar. 2. list up page 3. detail page for example, Let's say. I have top category like "Restaurant, Hotel, Gift Shop" Second level "New York, LA, London,....." Third Level displays all Data with 1 photo. Fourth Level displays Detail of that "Restaurant or Hotel, Gift shop, ..." So, My Only Interest is "How to retrieve the data from remote database server. not using iphone local one." Because, that locations, and shops should be updated frequently, (you know some shops closed, new shops opens.) So, till now, I figured out that using XML to retrieve data. However, using XML is the most effective way to implement? Is there any other way to accomplish this work? You know, transferring XML data via 3G Network is really slow. XML file have more bytes than plist file. I'm currently a beginner of iphone development. So, please help me find a right way!! And, one more question, if I use xml way. Is it possible to Paging? (First page 10 lists up, below that more button...) well, you might guess each category have hundreds of shops!!

  • Calculating the pixel size of a string with Python

    I have a Python script which needs to calculate the exact size of arbitrary strings displayed in arbitrary fonts in order to generate simple diagrams. I can easily do it with Tkinter.   • Condensing multiple else if statements, referencing them from a table?

    Hi I'm about to type some 500 else if statements into my code (PHP) which have the exact same coding each: if (color=White); rgb = 255-255-255; print rgb; else if (color=Black); rgb = 0-0-0; print rgb; else if (color=Red); rgb = 255-0-0; print rgb; else if (color=Blue); rgb = 0-0-255; print rgb; [the list keeps going] I also (luckily) have a table that displays the color in the first column and rgb value in the next column for 500 of them... how do I use this to save time typing all those else if statements? Some how I have to reference the table file (made in excel, I'm guessing I'll have to save it as .csv?)
