• What are the pro and cons of having localization files vs hard coded variables in source code?

  Definitions: Files: Having the localization phrases stored in a physical file that gets read at application start-up and the phrases are stored in the memory to be accessed via util-methods. The phrases are stored in key-value format. One file per language. Variables: The localization texts are stored as hard code variables in the application's source code. The variables are complex data types and depending on the current language, the appropriate phrase is returned. Background: The application is a Java Servlet and the developers use Eclipse as their primary IDE. Some brief pro and cons: Since Eclipse is use, tracking and finding unused localizations are easier when they are saved as variables, compared to having them in a file. However the application's source code becomes bigger and bloated. What are the pro and cons of having localization text in files versus hard coded varibles in source code? What do you do and why?

• How do I send telnet option codes?

  I've written a socket listener in Java that just sends some data to the client. If I connect to the server using telnet, I want the server to send some telnet option codes. Do I just send these like normal messages? Like, if I wanted the client to print "hello", I would do this: PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter(clientSocket.getOutputStream()); out.print("hello"); out.flush(); But when I try to send option codes, the client just prints them. Eg, the IAC char (0xff) just gets printed as a strange y character when I do this: PrintWriter out = new PrintWriter(clientSocket.getOutputStream()); out.print((char)0xff); out.flush();

• Calculating intraday candlesticks by time intervals

  This maybe an over asked question, but my mind draws blank at this moment. I know what a candlestick chart is and how to draw it daily. But how to draw it intraday at asked time periods. I have this server, written in Java, that gives me trade depth (each trade done since the start of the day). Its just a stream of raw data: price, shares, timestamp. How does one go about calculating candlestick data from that? Lets say, they want to have 5 min candlestick or 1min candlestick. Or is there a library that will do that for me if I feed it data? Any help is appreciated!

  Hi: Now I have to handle some xml in my java swing application. I have to build a swing ui according to the special schema ,then user can fill some values.After user completed,I will collect the information,validate the value and then build a xml file. For building xml file I can use the xmlbeans,however how to parse the schema and build a swing ui? Since the schema is rather complex. A schema can be found here: example schema I have to parser this schema,for the LiteralInputType ,a JTextArea should be built. However there are other types "complexType" and etc.. These types may not occur at the sametime. Some times only the LiteralInputType is needed,somethimes the ComplexType is needed,also maybe all of them are needed. So, how to implement it? Anyone can help me?

• Why is conversion from UTF-8 to ISO-8859-1 not the same in Windows and Linux?

  I have the following in code to convert from UTF-8 to ISO-8859-1 in a jar file and when I execute this jar in Windows I get one result and in CentOS I get another. • Ant failed to build

  Hi, I have build a Java appliction which is using ant.jar (ant 1.8.2) classes for building android application from it's build.xml file with release as target. My Android project has been built by using android create project command, using sdk 2.2. When I run my application for building the Android application I get the following message - build.xml:46: taskdef class com.android.ant.SetupTask cannot be found I have verified the sdk.dir path and the sdk-location path and both are correct. • Standard Workflow when working with JPA

  I am currently trying to wrap my head around working with JPA. I can't help but feel like I am missing something or doing it the wrong way. It just seems forced so far. What I think I know so far is that their are couple of ways to work with JPA and tools to support this. You can do everything in Java using annotations, and let JPA (whatever implementation you decide to use) create your schema and update it when changes are made. You can use a tool to reverse engineer you database and generate the entity classes for you. When the schema is updated you have to regenerate these classes, or manually update them. There seems to be drawbacks to both, and benefits to both (as with all things). My question is in an ideal situation what is the standard workflow with JPA? Most schemas will require updates during the maintenance phase and especially during the development phase, so how is this handled?

• Hudson jobs won't call javac?

  Hi, I have just set up Hudson on my server. For some reason, my build will not call javac to compile my builds...? I have set the path to the JDK in the Manage Hudson area, and it seems to recognise it (doesn't give me a warning). Is there something else I'm supposed to do? • How does one search/poll all modal info in a frame automatically?

  As you'll no-doubt be able to tell momentarily, I have little knowledge of the programming world. That being said, here goes.... In this scenario, there's a Java-based game that has a map of the game world oriented in an X, Y coordinate tile system. Some of the grid tiles are player cities, some are non-player locations. The game runs inside a frame in the browser, the X, Y coordinate map feature is one optional view, and the entire map is not available to view at any one time. Each grid tile has an "Onclick" event and an "Onmouseover" event. The mouseover event is a tooltip, the click event is something called a "modal" that has information specific to that tile. What I'd like to find out is: How can I poll all the grid tiles' "modal" information using some kind of script or other auto-running polling feature?

  Hello I'm trying to run JUnit4 test cases on Eclipse 3.4.2 but it's not even starting for me. I am sure that I properly have junit-4.7.jar in my build path and the test application. Here is a simple example that illustrates my problem package test; import org.junit.Before; import org.junit.Test; public class UTest { @Test public void test() { } @Before public void setUp() throws Exception { } } This compiles fine Then I do "Run JUnit Test case" from Eclipse and I get an error dialog with this message "Launching UTest' has encountered a problem An internal error occurred during: "Launching UTest". java.lang.NullPointerException I'm not sure how to figure out what exactly generating this NullPointerException. • Why Eclipse does not see .jar file of a library?

  I have a java project in which I have "Referenced Libraries". In the "Referenced Libraries" I have a .jar file of a library that I use (I use only one external library). When I try to "Run - Run" the code I have a NullPointerException. From my previous experience I know that it it (very likely) because my code does not see the library. I just started to use Eclipse and it can be the I do not "connect" libraries in a correct way. Should I use some options or additional action to force Eclipse to see the .jar file of the library? ADDED: By the right click on the library I get a drop-down menu in which I see "Build Path". My be I need to do something there?

  I'm trying to validate an XML file against a number of different schemas (apologies for the contrived example): a.xsd b.xsd c.xsd c.xsd in particular imports b.xsd and b.xsd imports a.xsd, using: <xs:include schemaLocation="b.xsd"/> I'm trying to do this via Xerces in the following manner: XMLSchemaFactory xmlSchemaFactory = new XMLSchemaFactory(); Schema schema = xmlSchemaFactory.newSchema(new StreamSource[] { new StreamSource(this.getClass().getResourceAsStream("a.xsd"), "a.xsd"), new StreamSource(this.getClass().getResourceAsStream("b.xsd"), "b.xsd"), new StreamSource(this.getClass().getResourceAsStream("c.xsd"), "c.xsd")}); Validator validator = schema.newValidator(); validator.validate(new StreamSource(new StringReader(xmlContent))); but this is failing to import all three of the schemas correctly resulting in cannot resolve the name 'blah' to a(n) 'group' component. I've validated this successfully using Python, but having real problems with Java 6.0 and Xerces 2.8.1. Can anybody suggest what's going wrong here, or an easier approach to validate my XML documents?

  Allot of my use of hibernate, at least for that data that is presented on many parts of the web application, is for read-only purposes. I want to add some parameters to my Dao methods so I can modify the way hibernate pulls the data and how it handles transactions etc. Example usage: Data on the front page of my website is displayed to the users, it is read-only, so I want to avoid any session/entity tracking that hibernate usually does. This is data that is read-only, will not be changed in this transaction, etc. What would be the most performant way to pull the data? • How to handle updating JDO class definitions on Google App Engine

  I'm using the Google app engine and JDO. What is the best way to update a JDO class definition without having to wipe the data store contents first? I'm not sure if this is specific to JDO on GAE, but I noticed that when I simply change the name of one of my persistent fields from svotes to votes, an exception is thrown (java.lang.NoSuchFieldError: svotes). I expect once my site goes live I might want to make some changes to my JDO class definitions, such as adding a field or something. Any suggestions for how to update the data definitions without having to wipe the database?

  hi. im currently creating a tile based game, where elements of the games are placed in four different vectors (since there are multiple game objects with different properties, hence stored in different vectors). these game elements themselves contain x and y coordinates similar to how they are stored in a two dimensional array. i was wondering if there was a way to access these vector elements similar to two dimensional array access (currently i am implementing an for loop to cycle the elements while comparing its coordinates). this kinda sucks when i need to refresh my display at every game cycle (since the large number of comparisons and loops). im implementing this in java btw.

  Is it possible to configure Hibernate reverse engineering and code generation tool in such a way that one-to-many relation between tables is mapped to entities inheritance instead of enrites relation? I have Person table and Employee table, which are related with the foreign key (Person contains basic information, Employee the rest). In my Java code I would like this relation mapped to inheritance Employee extends Person. This can be done by hand, but maybe I missed some custom configuration parameter that I can use.   I recently used a solution to the one-thread-at-a-time problem whe using Jlayer to play mp3 songs in Java. But this solution by Kaleb Brasee didn't hint at how you could stop the player, i.e how could one then call player.close()? I'm executing the following SQL Query approx 300 times in the program to find route connections from a database of 10,000 bus connections. It takes approx 6-7 seconds to execute the query 300 times. Any suggestions on how I can speed this up or any ideas on a different method i can use ? • Programatically Start OSGi (Equinox)?

  I'd like to be able to easily start an OSGi framework (preferably Equinox) and load up any bundles listed in my pom from a java main. Is this possible? If so, how? It seems like the pax tools would do this, but I can't seem to find any documentation indicating such. I know I can start up Equinox like so: BundleContext context = EclipseStarter.startup( ( new String[] { "-console" } ), null ); But I'd like to do more - like I said: load more bundles in, maybe start some services, etc.

  I am writing a piece of Java code that needs to send mail to users with non-ASCII names. I have figured out how to use UTF-8 for the body, subject line, and generic headers, but I am still stuck on the recipients. Here's what I'd like in the "To:" field: "????????????" <[email protected]>. This lives (for our purposes today) in a String called recip. msg.addRecipients(MimeMessage.RecipientType.TO, recip) gives "?????S]" <[email protected]> msg.addHeader("To", MimeUtility.encodeText(recip, "utf-8", "B")) throws AddressException: Local address contains control or whitespace in string ``=?utf-8?B?IuOCpuOCo+OCreODmuODh+OCo+OCouOBq+OCiOOBhuOBk+OBnSIgPA==?= =?utf-8?B?Zm9vQGV4YW1wbGUuY29tPg==?='' How the heck am I supposed to send this message?

  I have a array of integer numbers (say 1,2,3,4,5 or 1,2,3, ... 10 or 1,2,3, ... 50) from which I would like to get a random set of numbers ordered differently every time. Is there a utility method to do this? e.g. for 1,2,3,4,5 post randomization it might be either [1,5,4,2,3 or 2,1,3,5,4 or 3,1,2,4,5 or ...] I would like to know if there is a java utility method / class which already provides this capability?
