• Getting COM object to run in Vista

  We expose an interface to our simulation software using a COM/ActiveX object. This worked just fine in XP, but in Vista, we get "Error 429: ActiveX can't create object" when a VB client executes CreateObject(). The COM object has been registered by hand so that the Vista Registry is identical to XP's Registry. I run the VB interface from a DOS window that I started using "Run As Administrator". The client is correctly accessing and reading the Registry as I walk through using the debugger in VB, so it's apparently not a security setting, as near as I can tell. I have also loaded the files into VS2005 (the object was originally created in VS6) and rebuilt them to get a later ATL version, but that hasn't helped - we still get the 429 error. Is this a symptom of UAC problems, or should I be looking for something deeper?

• Authentication for SaaS

  What would be recommended as an authentication solution for a Software-as-a-service product? Specifically, my product would have clients that would typically have low information technology skills, potentially not even having an IT department within their organization. I would still like to have my application authenticate against their internal directory service (eDirectory, Active Directory, etc.). I don't want them, however, to have to open/forward ports (for instance, opening up port 636 so I can do LDAPS binds directly to their directory service). One idea I had was to have an application installed on a server within their organization's network that would backconnect to my service. This would be a persistant socket. When I need to authenticate a user, I send the credentials via the socket (encrypted) - the application then performs a bind/whatever to authenticate against the directory service and replies with OK/FAIL. What would you suggest? My goal here is to essentially have the client install an application within their network, with very little configuration or intervention.

• Automatically deleting pyc files when corresponding py is moved (Mercurial)

  (I foresaw this problem might happen 3 months ago, and was told to be diligent to avoid it. Yesterday, I was bitten by it, hard, and now that it has cost me real money, I am keen to fix it.) If I move one of my Python source files into another directory, I need to remember to tell Mercurial that it moved (hg move). When I deploy the new software to my server with Mercurial, it carefully deletes the old Python file and creates it in the new directory. However, Mercurial is unaware of the pyc file in the same directory, and leaves it behind. The old pyc is used preferentially over new python file by other modules in the same directory. What ensues is NOT hilarity. How can I persuade Mercurial to automatically delete my old pyc file when I move the python file? Is there another better practice? Trying to remember to delete the pyc file from all the Mercurial repositories isn't working.

• start .net application from start menu search

  bla.exe (application alias) points to a .net application called wpfapp1.exe. When i add a key&value to eg. this key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\bla.exe and then start application using Run - bla.exe it starts however when i start application using windows search i get an "windows cannot find wpfapp1.exe. make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." I have successfully identified problem: this error only occurs to .net applications while native one start normally (eg. firefox.exe). So is there any .net config that i've missed during development?

  Hi, in my c++ software I've used Boost in some parts and also for the local time. OK, now my problem is to make a check if in my machine is active or not the DST. With the follow part of code I can know only the difference from the UTC time. In my case the difference is 2 hours because is active the DST ptime tLoc = second_clock::local_time(); ptime tUTC = second_clock::universal_time(); time_duration tDiff = tUTC - tLoc; local_time_zone = tDiff.hours(); I think that the boolean funcion has_dst() can help, right? • Using Accelerometer in Wiimote for Physics Practicals

  I have to develop some software in my school to utilize the accelerometer in the Wiimote for recording data from experiments, for example finding the acceleration and velocity of a moving object. I understand how the accelerometer values will be used but I am sort of stuck on the programming front. There is a set of things that I would like to do: Live streaming of data from the Wiimote via bluetooth Use the accelerometer values to find velocity and displacment via integration Plot a set of results Avoid the use of the infrared sensor on the Wiimote Please can anyone give me their thoughts on how to go about this. Also it would be great if people could direct me to existing projects that utizlise the wiimote. Also can someone suggest what would be the best programming language to use for this. My current bet is on using Visual basic. Any sort of help is greatly appretiated.

• How do you get notified of your repos' updates?

  I'm working on several repositories at work and would like to be informed, if anything changes in the SVN repositories. I made a small BAT script (yes, BAT is usefull sometimes) that keeps executing an svn log -r BASE:HEAD on my working copy. It shows all submit comments and revision dates. It works really well but it's not comfortable for different repositories. How do you keep track of changes in your repositories? Do you use a small program you made for yourself? Do you use software someone else made? I'm interested in every approach to this problem. I would like to get notifications and several more information about the commit. The IDE integrated functions are good, but work only if I request the information. I don't want to act to get this information. Platform: Windows, Subversion 1.5 and higher.

• NDIS or TDI for packet redirection to a local proxy

  I need to develop a transparent filter to redirect outgoing HTTP packets to a local proxy, to do transparent content filtering. Which is the best technology to do it, TDI or NDIS IM? My main constraint is to avoid conflicts with antivirus software, which also do some kind of packet redirection to inspect HTTP content (I don't know whether antivirus programs use TDI, NDIS IM, or both). Rather than writing the driver myself, actually, I'm also considering two commercial SDKs for packet filtering/modification: one uses a TDI driver while the other uses a NDIS IM driver, so that's the origin of my question (I was only aware of NDIS IM, before looking at the two SDKs).

  Hi I've never read COBOL in my life and have been tasked with rewriting the old COBOL code in a new language. Are there any free or free-to-try software packages out there that will generate a flow chart for a COBOL program? I've looked at "Visustin" and "Code Visual to Flowchart" Visustin blanks out part of the code and does random rotations in the demo version, which causes the demo to be less accurate. I couldn't get Code Visual Flow Chart to work correctly with our code. Know of any other packages I might try?

• Storing And Using Microsoft User Account Credentials in MS SQL Srv 2008 Database

  I'm not exactly positive how to word this for the sake of the title so please forgive me. Also I can't seem to figure out how to even google this question, so I'm hoping that I can get a lead in the right direction. Part of my software(VB.NET App) requires the ability to access/read/write a shared network folder. I have an option for the user to specify any credentials that might be needed to access said folder. I want to store these credentials given in the MS SQL Database as part of the config(I have a table which contains configuration). My concern is that the password for the user account will be unencrpyted. Yet, if I encrypt the password the VB.NET App And/Or database will be unable to use the credentials for file i/o operations unless the Password is unencrypted before use. I'm fishing for suggestions on how to better handle this situation.

  I am writing an input system for a game that needs to be able to handle keyboard schemes that are not just qwerty. In designing the system, I must take into consideration: Two types of input: standard shooter controls (lots of buttons being pressed and raw samples collected) and flight sim controls (the button's label is what the user presses to toggle something) Alternative software keyboard layouts (dvorak, azerty, etc) as supplied by the OS Alternative hardware keyboard layouts that supply Unicode characters My initial inclination is to sample the USB HID unicode scancodes. Interested on thoughts on what I need to do to be compatible with the world's input devices and recommendation of input APIs on both platforms.

• What's wrong with my logic here?

  In java they say don't concatenate Strings, instead you should make a stringbuffer and keep adding to that and then when you're all done, use toString() to get a String object out of it. Here's what I don't get. They say do this for performance reasons, because concatenating strings makes lots of temporary objects. But if the goal was performance, then you'd use a language like C/C++ or assembly. The argument for using java is that it is a lot cheaper to buy a faster processor than it is to pay a senior programmer to write fast efficient code. So on the one hand, you're supposed let the hardware take care of the inefficiencies, but on the other hand, you're supposed to use stringbuffers to make java more efficient. While I see that you can do both, use java and stringbuffers, my question is where is the flaw in the logic that you either use a faster chip or you spent extra time writing more efficient software.

  Hi; I was reading an article on Vadym Stetsiak's blog about how to transfer variable length messages with async sockets (url: http://vadmyst.blogspot.com/2008/03/part-2-how-to-transfer-fixed-sized-data.html). He says : What to expect when multiple messages arrive at the server? While dealing with multiple messages one has to remember that receive operation can return arbitrary number of bytes being read from the net. Typically that size is from 0 to specified buffer length in the Receive or BeginReceive methods. So, even if I tell BeginReceive to read 100 bytes, it may read less than that and returns??? I am developing a network-enabled software (TCP/IP), and I always receive the same exact number of bytes I asked for. I don't even understand the logic : why would Receive completes asynchronously if it didn't get every byte I asked for ... just keep waiting. Maybe it has something to do with IP vs TCP? • Tool to Verify Site URLs/SiteMap?

  I'm moving a site from one e-commerce software to another, and I've created URL Rewriter rules to do 301 redirects from the Old URLs to the new ones. I've tested them with a small sample of URLs, but I'm looking for some sort of tool that will let me test as many of the URLs as possible. Does anyone know of a tool that I can feed a list of URLs (or a sitemap.xml). This tool will attempt to retrieve each URL, and then report the status code for each. The result should be a list of URLs with the status code, something like this: www.site.com/oldurlformat1/ 301 Permanently Moved www.site.com/newurlformat1/ 200 OK www.site.com/oldurlformat2/ 301 Permanently Moved www.site.com/newurlformat2/ 200 OK I can almost do this with wget, but getting the summary/report at the end is where I'm stuck.

But when I compiled them I didn't put any icons for them, so they all look like same dull, bald default icon. So my questions are, (1) is it possible for me to write a software that can change the resources section of the exe and change its looks? If so, can anyone plz point me to the location where its explained? (I am a beginner, I have no idea on the exe format and all) Also its fun to keep changing Icons without having the pain of recompiling everything just for the icon change... (2) This is raises a natural converse question, Is it similarly possible to zap out the icon used by some file and use it for some other file?   Is there anything similar to netbean's Javadoc auto comment tool for PHP/phpDocumentor/Eclipse? In the netbeans implementation: A dialog pops up and allows you to run through all the members of your class and enter comments, which are added to the source file. It even verifies that there are no parameters you have not accounted for, so you can be sure that your comments are complete. • How to upgrade a 1.4.3 TortoiseSVN created repository to 1.6.x?

  A few years ago we deployed TortoiseSVN 1.4.3 to our software development team and we used this client to create a repository on a share point. We are now looking at upgrading to the latest 1.6.x version of TortoiseSVN. I had hoped this would be transparent as the additional features and modifications will all be client-side. For the most part this is true except for a very important feature -- merging. When I try to merge a feature branch back into truck I get a "Merge tracking not supported error." So now the question becomes, how does one upgrade a 1.4.3 TortoiseSVN created repo to be compatible with the latest 1.6.x version of TortoiseSVN? As a follow up question, if we were to successfully upgrade the repo such that the 1.6.x client works flawlessly, will we still be backwards compatible with a 1.4.x client?

  Hi, recently I discovered that "executing" a C program as a release build instead of a debug build optimizes the code and makes it run much faster. This is accessed through project properties configuration manager menu. I would like to know if this feature is the same in the professional version and the express edition of MVS 2010 in terms of speed optimization. I have the express edition. Also, I would like to know if C programs run with the same speed as in both the professional and express editions.   I have been kicking an idea around for sometime and wondered if something of it's nature hadn't already been invented. The premise is a website that integrates code management, project/team management, and micro-transactions. Donations, in and of themselves, are a sporadic, and unreliable method of supporting developers. Furthermore most free software that accepts donations is started by programmers ,be it to learn, because of a hobby, or because they saw a niche that needed to be filled. There is no method in place of of saying "hay, the FOSS community needs this kind of software, will someone develop it, and accept donations!?" Programmers should be programming, not busy begging for money. Basically the idea is people can go to the site in question, and start a project or make a request. Anyone signed up with the site can start a request. Each member account is free to support or "upvote" a project request. Requests and the associated number of votes let programmers in the community know the needs of the community. When a project is started a request for developers can be put forth. Developers have a ranking based on commits to other projects. The project founder can send invites to known Developers, or accept invites from members based on developer ranking. Once the project has at least one team-member, an objectives sheet or "draft" can be put out, listing design, goals, and features. The founding member and each team-member may contribute to this sheet. Each "milestone", or "Feature" is represented by an article. An article is any unit of a draft that can be voted on by The Project Founder, Team-members, and contributors...which brings me to the next half of this idea. --Microtransactions-- People signed up with this hypothetical website can purchase credits which then can be transfered to projects they would like to support. Anyone who transfers credits to a project is known as a contributor to that project. At anytime a Founder, or the lead team-member may submit an article, or a design (multiple articles) for consideration. All team-members, as well as the Founder, can vote once for each article freely. Contributors may vote yes or no on a number of articles (independent of any given meeting where a particular design or article is considered) equal to the number of credits they have placed into a contributors fund for that particular project. A contributors fund is a proxy between a sites credit account, and a projects credit account. It is sort of like a promise to contribute, instead of an actual contribution. Contributers may place constraints on particular articles such that if those constraints (a yes or no vote) are satisfied then a manually specified amount of credits is automatically transfered to the project account. This allows a project to develop based on the needs of those who may (in the future) financially rely on the project. --- Code commits & milestones --- When a team-member makes a commit, they may specify if it's a minor commit, a bug fix, a compatibility patch (i.e. for a new platform), or a milestone (an article voted on previously). People signed up with the website, may download the updated project and test it to see if the programmer's assertion is true about the commit. A report may then be filed on a small form, giving a one or two paragraphs, and a positive or negative confirmation of the programmer's goal for that particular commit. After all milestones for a particular draft are complete, a new draft is submitted for voting. Also funds may withdrawn by each team-member based on the proportion of commits and milestones confirmed (fulfilled the stated purpose) for each programmer. --- voting --- Members, contributor, and non-contributor, may make priority requests for particular articles of a draft. The project founder may or may not opt to fill those requests based on the volume of upvotes. A fulfilled priority request means that any team-member that makes a community-confirmed commit for an article is, when all articles for the draft are fulfilled, granted a portion of project credits in proportion to the average priority of all the articles he committed. ---- Notes --- While this is horribly prone to design-by-committee the one saving grace is that the lead team-member may place constraints on a draft such that some, or ALL articles must be voted yes. Commits may not begin until a draft satisfying said constraints is approved. What does SO think, is this idea feasible? Does anyone see major problems with this? Is there any insights, or improvements that could be made?

• Setting up a web developer lab for learning purposes

  I'm not a developer by profession. Therefore, I'm not exposed to real world technical problems that face professional developers. I read/heard about web farms, integration between different systems, load balancing ... etc. Therefore, I was wondering if there are ways for the individual developer to create an environment that simulates real world situations with minimal number of machines like: web farms & caching simulating many users accessing your website (Pressure tests?) Performance load balancing anything you think I should consider. By the way, I have a server machine and 1 PC. and I don't mind investing in tools and software. PS. I'm using Microsoft technologies for development but I hope this is not a limiting factor. Thanks

• Is there a way to formerly define a time interval for configuring a process?

  Horrible worded question...I know. I'm working on an application that processes data for the previous day. The problem is that I know the customer is going to eventually ask to it for every hour or some other arbitrary time interval. I know that languages such as Java or SQL have masks for defining dates. Well what about a way to define a time interval? Let me ask it this way. If someone asked you to create a configurable piece of software how would you allow the user to specify the time intervals?

• Has anyone ever encountered a Monad Transformer in the wild?

  In my area of business - back office IT for a financial institution - it is very common for a software component to carry a global configuration around, to log it's progress, to have some kind of error handling / computation short circuit... Things that can be modelled nicely by Reader-, Writer-, Maybe-monads and the like in Haskell and composed together with monad transformers. But there seem to some drawbacks: The concept behind monad transformers is quite tricky and hard to understand, monad transformers lead to very complex type signatures, and they inflict some performance penalty. So I'm wondering: Are monad transformers best practice when dealing with those common tasks mentioned above?
