• What is causing a Hibernate SQL query exception?

  Hi all and sorry in advance for this post but I've spent way too much time going around in circles so I'm hoping someone could shed a light on it here for me. I updated a webapp on Tomcat and I'm getting the following error which didn't exist on the previous version. Though I am quite confident that the part of code I modifed isn't to blame as I have tested the app on two different dev servers. The production server is configured thus: CentOS 5.4 virtual server with tomcat 5.5.23 running mysql 5.0.77. The two dev servers are: Windows XP SP2 running tomcat 5.5.23 with mysql 5.1.49 Mac OSX 10.6.6 Running tomcat 6 with mysql 5.1.51 The application was developed using struts (1.1 as far as I can gather) with hibernate 3 as the peristence layer. It only fails on the production server for some reason I can't fathom. I'd like to draw your attention to the java.sql.SQLException near the bottom. After some long searching I found this but because it was posted years ago (about 1 year before development started on this app I'm sure Hibernate has evolved from that version. as I can't find a way of implementing his solution. I use Eclipse Helios as an IDE. • Convert flyout menu to respond onclick vs mouseover

  The code below creates a nifty flyout menu action on a nested list item sequence. The client has called and wants the change the default behavior in which the flyouts are triggered by mouseover, so that you have to click to trigger a flyout. Ideally, I would just like to modify this code so that you click on a small icon (plus/minus) that sits to the right of the menu item if it has child menus. • Techniques for modeling a dynamic dataflow with Java concurrency API

  Is there an elegant way to model a dynamic dataflow in Java? By dataflow, I mean there are various types of tasks, and these tasks can be "connected" arbitrarily, such that when a task finishes, successor tasks are executed in parallel using the finished tasks output as input, or when multiple tasks finish, their output is aggregated in a successor task (see flow-based programming). By dynamic, I mean that the type and number of successors tasks when a task finishes depends on the output of that finished task, so for example, task A may spawn task B if it has a certain output, but may spawn task C if has a different output. Another way of putting it is that each task (or set of tasks) is responsible for determining what the next tasks are. Sample dataflow for rendering a webpage: I have as task types: file downloader, HTML/CSS renderer, HTML parser/DOM builder, image renderer, JavaScript parser, JavaScript interpreter. File downloader task for HTML file HTML parser/DOM builder task File downloader task for each embedded file/link If image, image renderer If external JavaScript, JavaScript parser JavaScript interpreter Otherwise, just store in some var/field in HTML parser task JavaScript parser for each embedded script JavaScript interpreter Wait for above tasks to finish, then HTML/CSS renderer (obviously not optimal or perfectly correct, but this is simple) I'm not saying the solution needs to be some comprehensive framework (in fact, the closer to the JDK API, the better), and I absolutely don't want something as heavyweight is say Spring Web Flow or some declarative markup or other DSL. To be more specific, I'm trying to think of a good way to model this in Java with Callables, Executors, ExecutorCompletionServices, and perhaps various synchronizer classes (like Semaphore or CountDownLatch). There are a couple use cases and requirements: Don't make any assumptions on what executor(s) the tasks will run on. In fact, to simplify, just assume there's only one executor. It can be a fixed thread pool executor, so a naive implementation can result in deadlocks (e.g. imagine a task that submits another task and then blocks until that subtask is finished, and now imagine several of these tasks using up all the threads). To simplify, assume that the data is not streamed between tasks (task output-succeeding task input) - the finishing task and succeeding task won't exist together, so the input data to the succeeding task will not be changed by the preceeding task (since it's already done). There are only a couple operations that the dataflow "engine" should be able to handle: A mechanism where a task can queue more tasks A mechanism whereby a successor task is not queued until all the required input tasks are finished A mechanism whereby the main thread (or other threads not managed by the executor) blocks until the flow is finished A mechanism whereby the main thread (or other threads not managed by the executor) blocks until certain tasks have finished Since the dataflow is dynamic (depends on input/state of the task), the activation of these mechanisms should occur within the task code, e.g. the code in a Callable is itself responsible for queueing more Callables. The dataflow "internals" should not be exposed to the tasks (Callables) themselves - only the operations listed above should be available to the task. Note that the type of the data is not necessarily the same for all tasks, e.g. a file download task may accept a File as input but will output a String. If a task throws an uncaught exception (indicating some fatal error requiring all dataflow processing to stop), it must propagate up to the thread that initiated the dataflow as quickly as possible and cancel all tasks (or something fancier like a fatal error handler). Tasks should be launched as soon as possible. This along with the previous requirement should preclude simple Future polling + Thread.sleep(). As a bonus, I would like to dataflow engine itself to perform some action (like logging) every time task is finished or when no has finished in X time since last task has finished. Something like: ExecutorCompletionService<T> ecs; while (hasTasks()) { Future<T> future = ecs.poll(1 minute); some_action_like_logging(); if (future != null) { future.get() ... } ... } Are there straightforward ways to do all this with Java concurrency API? Or if it's going to complex no matter what with what's available in the JDK, is there a lightweight library that satisfies the requirements? I already have a partial solution that fits my particular use case (it cheats in a way, since I'm using two executors, and just so you know, it's not related at all to the web browser example I gave above), but I'd like to see a more general purpose and elegant solution.

• 100% height with fixed footer and embedded Google Map

  I have a problem with a layout - it's not online anywhere, just local, but if you copy and paste the code below into an html page and run it locally you will see the same page I do. It's very nearly there. What I'm trying to achieve is a page with no scrollbars using up all available vertical space. Yes, I can set "overflow:hidden" on the container declaration and that helps, but it's not quite right. I want to actually have the google map surrounded with a 1em border. I have this on 3 sides but the 100% height declaration on the content div crashes the bottom border. If you don't realise the implications of a percentage-sized google map div, then the parent HAS to have a height declared for it to work. As the footer is absolute and outside of the flow, there is no "bottom" border to work to and the layout just doesn't work. The content div 100% height basically seems to take its size from the viewport and not the containing div. It's driving me mad... just can't seem to work out how to do this and I'd really appreciate some input.   Hi all, This is a question about Paypal Mass Pay IPN. My platform is PHP & mySQL. All over the Paypal support website, I have found IPN for only payments made. I need an IPN on similar lines for Mass Pay but could not find it. Also tried experimenting with already existing Mass Pay NVP code, but that did not work either. What I am trying to do is that for all the recipients to whom the payment has been successfully sent via Mass Pay, I want to record their email, amount and unique_id in my own database table. If possible, I want to capture the payment status as well, whether it has been a success of failure and based upon the same, I need to do some in house processing.   After searching a lot i did not get any answers and finally i had to get back to you. Below i am explaining my problem in detail. It's too long, so please don't quit reading. I have explained my problem in simple language. I have been developing an asp.net mvc project. I am using standard ASP.NET roles and membership. Everything is working fine but the remember me functionality doesn't work at all. I am listing all the details of work. Hope you guys can help me out solve this problem. I simply need this: I need user to login to web application. During login they can either login with remember me or without it. If user logs in with remember me, i want browser to remember them for long time, let's say atleast one year or considerably long time. The way they do it in www.dotnetspider.com,www.codeproject.com,www.daniweb.com and many other sites. If user logs in without remember me, then browser should allow access to website for some 20 -30 minutes and after that their session should expire. Their session should also expire when user logs in and shuts down the browser without logging out. Note: I have succesfully implemented above functionality without using standard asp.net roles and membership by creating my own talbes for user and authenticating against my database table, setting cookie and sessions in my other projects. But for this project we starting from the beginning used standard asp.net roles and membership. We thought it will work and after everything was build at the time of testing it just didn't work. and now we cannot replace the existing functionality with standard asp.net roles and membership with my own custom user tables and all the stuff, you understand what i am taling about. Either there is some kind of bug with standard asp.net roles and membership functionality or i have the whole concept of standard asp.net roles and membership wrong. i have stated what i want above. I think it's very simple and reasonable. What i did Login form with username,password and remember me field. Their session exists for as much minutes as specified in timeout value in web.config. I have also given a sample of my web.config. In my samplem if i set the timeout to 5 minutes,then user session expires after 5 minutes, that's ok. But if user closes the browser and reopen the browser, user can still enter the website without loggin in untill time specified in "timeout" has not passed out. The sliding expiration for timeout value is also working fine. Now if user logs in to the system with remember me checked, user session still expires after 5 minutes. This is not good behaviour, is it?. I mean to say that if user logs in to the system with remember me checked he should be remembered for a long time untill he doesn't logs out of the system or user doesn't manually deletes all the cookies from the browser. If user logs in to the system without remember me checked his session should expire after the timeout period values specified in web.config and also if users closes the browser. The problem is that if user closes the browser and reopens it he can still enter the website without logging in. I search internet a lot on this topic, but i could not get the solution. I made a maven multi module project with the following modules: /api /domain /repositories /webapp I like to share the domain and the repositories between the api and the webapp (both web projects).   After searching a lot i did not get any answers and finally i had to get back to you. Below i am explaining my problem in detail. It's too long, so please don't quit reading. I have explained my problem in simple language. I have been developing an asp.net mvc project. I am using standard ASP.NET roles and membership. Everything is working fine but the remember me functionality doesn't work at all. I am listing all the details of work. Hope you guys can help me out solve this problem. I simply need this: I need user to login to web application. During login they can either login with remember me or without it. If user logs in with remember me, i want browser to remember them for long time, let's say atleast one year or considerably long time. The way they do it in www.dotnetspider.com,www.codeproject.com,www.daniweb.com and many other sites. If user logs in without remember me, then browser should allow access to website for some 20 -30 minutes and after that their session should expire. Their session should also expire when user logs in and shuts down the browser without logging out. Note: I have succesfully implemented above functionality without using standard asp.net roles and membership by creating my own talbes for user and authenticating against my database table, setting cookie and sessions in my other projects. But for this project we starting from the beginning used standard asp.net roles and membership. We thought it will work and after everything was build at the time of testing it just didn't work. and now we cannot replace the existing functionality with standard asp.net roles and membership with my own custom user tables and all the stuff, you understand what i am taling about. Either there is some kind of bug with standard asp.net roles and membership functionality or i have the whole concept of standard asp.net roles and membership wrong. i have stated what i want above. I think it's very simple and reasonable. What i did Login form with username,password and remember me field. My setting in web.config: in My controller action, i have this: FormsAuth.SignIn(userName, rememberMe); public void SignIn(string userName, bool createPersistentCookie) { FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(userName, createPersistentCookie); } Now the problems are following: I have already stated in above section "I simply need this". user can successfully log in to the system. Their session exists for as much minutes as specified in timeout value in web.config. I have also given a sample of my web.config. In my samplem if i set the timeout to 5 minutes,then user session expires after 5 minutes, that's ok. But if user closes the browser and reopen the browser, user can still enter the website without loggin in untill time specified in "timeout" has not passed out. The sliding expiration for timeout value is also working fine. Now if user logs in to the system with remember me checked, user session still expires after 5 minutes. This is not good behaviour, is it?. I mean to say that if user logs in to the system with remember me checked he should be remembered for a long time untill he doesn't logs out of the system or user doesn't manually deletes all the cookies from the browser. If user logs in to the system without remember me checked his session should expire after the timeout period values specified in web.config and also if users closes the browser. The problem is that if user closes the browser and reopens it he can still enter the website without logging in. I search internet a lot on this topic, but i could not get the solution. The users are complaining about the same thing in their comments ut there is no easy solution given in by Mr. Scott. • Job conditions conflicting with personal principles on software-development - how much is too much?

  Sorry for the incoming wall'o'text (and for my probably bad English) but I just need to get this off somehow. I also accept that this question will be probably closed as subjective and argumentative, but I need to know one thing: "how much BS are programmers supposed to put up with before breaking?" My background I'm 27 years old and have a B.Sc. in Computer engineering with a graduation grade of 1.8 from a university of applied science. I went looking for a job right after graduation. I got three offers right away, with two offers paying vastly more than the last one, but that last one seemed more interesting so I went for that. My situation I've been working for the company now for 17 months now, but it feels like a drag more and more each day. Primarily because the company (which has only 5 other developers but me, and of these I work with 4) turned out to be pretty much the anti-thesis of what I expected (and was taught in university) from a modern software company. I agreed to accept less than half of the usual payment appropriate for my qualification for the first year because I was promised a trainee program. However, the trainee program turned out to be "here you got a computer, there's some links on the stuff we use, and now do what you colleagues tell you". Further, during my whole time there (trainee or not) I haven't been given the grace of even a single code-review - apparently nobody's interested in my work as long as it "just works". I was told in the job interview that "Microsoft technology played a central role in the company" yet I've been slowly eroding my congnitive functions with Flex/Actionscript/Cairngorm ever since I started (despite having applied as a C#/.NET developer). Actually, the company's primary projects are based on Java/XSLT and Flex/Actionscript (with some SAP/ABAP stuff here and there but I'm not involved in that) and they've been working on these before I even applied. Having had no experience either with that particular technology nor the framework nor the field (RIA) nor in developing business scale applications I obviously made several mistakes. However, my boss told me that he let me make those mistakes (which ate at least 2 months of development time on their own) on purpose to provide some "learning experience". Even when I was still a trainee I was already tasked with working on a business-critical application. On my own. Without supervision. Without code-reviews. My boss thinks agile methods are a waste of time/money and deems putting more than one developer on any project not efficient. Documentation is not necessary and each developer should only document what he himself needs for his work. Recently he wanted us to do bug tracking with Excel and Email instead of using an already existing Bugzilla, overriding an unanimous decision made by all developers and testers involved in the process - only after another senior developer had another hour-long private discussion with him he agreed to let us use the bugtracker. Project management is basically not present, there are only a few Excel sheets floating around where the senior developer lists some things (not all, mind you) with a time estimate ranging from days to months, trying to at least somehow organize the whole mess. A development process is also basically not present, each developer just works on his own however he wants. There are not even coding conventions in the company. Testing is done manually with a single tester (sometimes two testers) per project because automated testing wasn't given the least thought when the whole project was started. I guess it's not a big surprise when I say that each developer also has his own share of hundreds of overhours (which are, of course, unpaid). Each developer is tasked with working on his own project(s) which in turn leads to a very extensive knowledge monopolization - if one developer was to have an accident or become ill there would be absolutely no one who could even hope to do his work. Considering that each developer has his own business-critical application to work on, I guess that's a pretty bad situation. I've been trying to change things for the better. I tried to introduce a development process, but my first attempt was pretty much shot down by my boss with "I don't want to discuss agile methods". After that I put together a process that at least resembled how most of the developers were already working and then include stuff like automated (or at least organized) testing, coding conventions, etc. However, this was also shot down because it wasn't "simple" enought to be shown on a business slide (actually, I wasn't even given the 15 minutes I'd have needed to present the process in the meeting). My problem I can't stand working there any longer. Seriously, I consider to resign on monday, which still leaves me with 3 months to work there due to the cancelation period. My primary goal since I started studying computer science was being a good computer scientist, working with modern technologies and adhering to modern and proven principles and methods. However, the company I'm working for seems to make that impossible. Some days I feel as if was living in a perverted real-life version of the Dilbert comics. My question Am I overreacting? Is this the reality each graduate from university has to face? Should I betray my sound principles and just accept these working conditions? Or should I gtfo of there? What's the opinion of other developers on this matter. Would you put up with all that stuff?

• Approaches for generic, compile-time safe lazy-load methods

  Suppose I have created a wrapper class like the following: public class Foo : IFoo { private readonly IFoo innerFoo; public Foo(IFoo innerFoo) { this.innerFoo = innerFoo; } public int? Bar { get; set; } public int? Baz { get; set; } } The idea here is that the innerFoo might wrap data-access methods or something similarly expensive, and I only want its GetBar and GetBaz methods to be invoked once. So I want to create another wrapper around it, which will save the values obtained on the first run. It's simple enough to do this, of course: int IFoo.GetBar() { if ((Bar == null) && (innerFoo != null)) Bar = innerFoo.GetBar(); return Bar ?? 0; } int IFoo.GetBaz() { if ((Baz == null) && (innerFoo != null)) Baz = innerFoo.GetBaz(); return Baz ?? 0; } But it gets pretty repetitive if I'm doing this with 10 different properties and 30 different wrappers. So I figured, hey, let's make this generic: T LazyLoad<T>(ref T prop, Func<IFoo, T> loader) { if ((prop == null) && (innerFoo != null)) prop = loader(innerFoo); return prop; } Which almost gets me where I want, but not quite, because you can't ref an auto-property (or any property at all). In other words, I can't write this: int IFoo.GetBar() { return LazyLoad(ref Bar, f => f.GetBar()); // <--- Won't compile } Instead, I'd have to change Bar to have an explicit backing field and write explicit getters and setters. Which is fine, except for the fact that I end up writing even more redundant code than I was writing in the first place. Then I considered the possibility of using expression trees: T LazyLoad<T>(Expression<Func<T>> propExpr, Func<IFoo, T> loader) { var memberExpression = propExpr.Body as MemberExpression; if (memberExpression != null) { // Use Reflection to inspect/set the property } } This plays nice with refactoring - it'll work great if I do this: return LazyLoad(f => f.Bar, f => f.GetBar()); But it's not actually safe, because someone less clever (i.e. myself in 3 days from now when I inevitably forget how this is implemented internally) could decide to write this instead: return LazyLoad(f => 3, f => f.GetBar()); Which is either going to crash or result in unexpected/undefined behaviour, depending on how defensively I write the LazyLoad method. So I don't really like this approach either, because it leads to the possibility of runtime errors which would have been prevented in the first attempt. It also relies on Reflection, which feels a little dirty here, even though this code is admittedly not performance-sensitive. Now I could also decide to go all-out and use DynamicProxy to do method interception and not have to write any code, and in fact I already do this in some applications. But this code is residing in a core library which many other assemblies depend on, and it seems horribly wrong to be introducing this kind of complexity at such a low level. Separating the interceptor-based implementation from the IFoo interface by putting it into its own assembly doesn't really help; the fact is that this very class is still going to be used all over the place, must be used, so this isn't one of those problems that could be trivially solved with a little DI magic. The last option I've already thought of would be to have a method like: T LazyLoad<T>(Func<T> getter, Action<T> setter, Func<IFoo, T> loader) { ... } This option is very "meh" as well - it avoids Reflection but is still error-prone, and it doesn't really reduce the repetition that much. It's almost as bad as having to write explicit getters and setters for each property. Maybe I'm just being incredibly nit-picky, but this application is still in its early stages, and it's going to grow substantially over time, and I really want to keep the code squeaky-clean. Bottom line: I'm at an impasse, looking for other ideas. Question: Is there any way to clean up the lazy-loading code at the top, such that the implementation will: Guarantee compile-time safety, like the ref version; Actually reduce the amount of code repetition, like the Expression version; and Not take on any significant additional dependencies? In other words, is there a way to do this just using regular C# language features and possibly a few small helper classes? Or am I just going to have to accept that there's a trade-off here and strike one of the above requirements from the list?

• Email Validation... advocating the use of +, and how embarrassed would you be to have written this?

  I take full advantage of GMail's wildcard feature ([email protected]). Unfortunately it seems that most developers don't understand that + is valid in an email address. This makes trying to unsubscribe a real chore sometimes. Take TicketMaster for example... immediately you notice that they didn't even bother escaping the email address, so the text field defaults to "user [email protected]". Not a problem, we can just add the + manually. Once Submit is clicked, you'll notice the validation stops you right in your tracks. What now? Most users would have to further contact TicketMaster and attempt to explain the situation. I opened up FireBug to investigate. That's when I noticed this whopping 74 line email validation function with so much redundancy it's ridiculous. My favorite check is on line 20, informing the user that his/her email cannot have more than one @. Unreal. My second favorite part is the TWO regular expressions used! • How should I model the database for this problem? And which ORM can handle it?

  I need to build some sort of a custom CMS for a client of ours. These are some of the functional requirements: Must be able to manage the list of Pages in the site Each Page can contain a number of ColumnGroups A ColumnGroup is nothing more than a list of Columns in a certain ColumnGroupLayout. For example: "one column taking up the entire width of the page", "two columns each taking up half of the width", ... Each Column can contain a number ContentBlocks Examples of a ContentBlock are: TextBlock, NewsBlock, PictureBlock, ... ContentBlocks can be given a certain sorting within a Column A ContentBlock can be put in different Columns so that content can be reused without having to be duplicated. My first quick draft of how this could look like in C# code (we're using ASP.NET 4.0 to develop the CMS) can be found at the bottom of my question. One of the technical requirements is that it must be as easy as possible to add new types of ContentBlocks to the CMS. So I would like model everything as flexible as possible. Unfortunately, I'm already stuck at trying to figure out how the database should look like. One of the problems I'm having has to do with sorting different types of ContentBlocks in a Column. I guess each type of ContentBlock (like TextBlock, NewsBlock, PictureBlock, ...) should have it's own table in the database because each has it's own different fields. A TextBlock might only have a field called Text whereas a NewsBlock might have fields for the Text, the Summary, the PublicationDate, ... Since one Column can have ContentBlocks located in different tables, I guess I'll have to create a many-to-many association for each type of ContentBlock. For example: ColumnTextBlocks, ColumnNewsBlocks and ColumnPictureBlocks. The problem I have with this setup is the sorting of the different ContentBlocks in a column. This could be something like this: TextBlock NewsBlock TextBlock TextBlock PictureBlock Where do I store the sorting number? If I store them in the associaton tables, I'll have to update a lot of tables when changing the sorting order of ContentBlocks in a Column. Is this a good approach to the problem? Basically, my question is: What is the best way to model this keeping in mind that it should be easy to add new types of ContentBlocks? My next question is: What ORM can deal with that kind of modeling? To be honest, we are ORM-virgins at work. I have been reading a bit about Linq-to-SQL and NHibernate, but we have no experience with them. Because of the IList in the Column class (see code below) I think we can rule out Linq-to-SQL, right? Can NHibernate handle the mapping of data from many different tables to one IList? Also keep in mind that this is just a very small portion of the domain. Other parts are Users belonging to a certain UserGroup having certain Permissions on Pages, ColumnGroups, Columns and ContentBlocks. • Trying to randomise a jQuery content slider

  Hi everyone, I'm using a very nice jQuery content slider called Easy Slider on my site that I downloaded from Css Globe. The script is excellent and does just what I want - except I can't make it randomise the list, it always scrolls from left to right or right to left! I'm far from good with JavaScript, so my attempts at solving this have been feeble. Although I'm sure it must be an easy fix! If anyone wouldn't mind taking a glance over the script to see if they can spot what I need to change to make it random it would be greatly appreciated! I've tried contacting the original plugin developer but have had no response yet. The comments on the Easy Slider page didn't bear much fruit either unfortunately. • Ignoring focusLost(), SWT.Verify, or other SWT listeners in Java code.

  Outside of the actual SWT listener, is there any way to ignore a listener via code? For example, I have a java program that implements SWT Text Widgets, and the widgets have: SWT.Verify listeners to filter out unwanted text input. ModifyListeners to wait for the correct number of valid input characters and automatically set focus (using setFocus())to the next valid field, skipping the other text widgets in the tab order. focusLost(FocusEvent) FocusListeners that wait for the loss of focus from the text widget to perform additional input verification and execute an SQL query based on the user input. The issue I run into is clearing the text widgets. One of the widgets has the format "####-##" (Four Numbers, a hyphen, then two numbers) and I have implemented this listener, which is a modified version of SWT Snippet Snippet179. The initial text for this text widget is " - " to provide visual feedback to the user as to the expected format. When that input is received, the listener changes the text back to " - " (four spaces, a hyphen, then two spaces). The problem is that messageboxes seem to create a focusLost event, and using the .setText(string) method is subject to SWT.Verify listeners that are present on the text widget.   Hi, I have a byte array of around 10,000 bytes which is basically a blob from delphi that contains char, string, double and arrays of various types. This need to be read in and updated via C#. I've created a very basic reader that gets the byte array from the db and converts the bytes to the relevant object type when accessing the property which works fine. My problem is when I try to write to a specific char[] item, it doesn't seem to update the byte array. I know a possible solution is to use a private variable called _usercaplas that I set and update as needed however as the byte array is nearly 10,000 bytes in length the class is already long and I would like a simpler approach as to reduce the overall code length and complexity. • Sorting/Paginating/Filtering Complex Multi-AR Object Tables in Rails

  I have a complex table pulled from a multi-ActiveRecord object array. This listing is a combined display of all of a particular user's "favorite" items (songs, messages, blog postings, whatever). Each of these items is a full-fledged AR object. My goal is to present the user with a simplified search, sort, and pagination interface. The user need not know that the Song has a singer, and that the Message has an author -- to the end user both entries in the table will be displayed as "User". Thus, the search box will simply be a dropdown list asking them which to search on (User name, created at, etc.). Internally, I would need to convert that to the appropriate object search, combine the results, and display. I can, separately, do pagination (mislav will_paginate), sorting, and filtering, but together I'm having some problems combining them. For example, if I paginate the combined list of items, the pagination plugin handles it just fine. It is not efficient since the pagination is happening in the app vs. the DB, but let's assume the intended use-case would indicate the vast majority of the users will have less than 30 favorited items and all other behavior, server capabilities, etc. indicates this will not be a bottleneck. However, if I wish to sort the list I cannot sort it via the pagination plugin because it relies on the assumption that the result set is derived from a single SQL query, and also that the field name is consistent throughout. Thus, I must sort the merged array via ruby, e.g. @items.sort_by{ |i| i.whatever } But, since the items do not share common names, I must first interrogate the object and then call the correct sort by. For example, if the user wishes to sort by user name, if the sorted object is a message, I sort by author but if the object is a song, I sort by singer. This is all very gross and feels quite un-ruby-like. This same problem comes into play with the filter. If the user filters on the "parent item" (the message's thread, the song's album), I must translate that to the appropriate collection object method. Also gross. This is not the exact set-up but is close enough. Note that this is a legacy app so changing it is quite difficult, although not impossible. Also, yes there is some DRY that can be done, but don't focus on the style or elegance of the following code. • How to filter Backbone.js Collection and Rerender App View?

  Is is a total Backbone.js noob question. I am working off of the ToDo Backbone.js example trying to build out a fairly simple single app interface. While the todo project is more about user input, this app is more about filtering the data based on the user options (click events). I am completely new to Backbone.js and Mongoose and have been unable to find a good example of what I am trying to do. I have been able to get my api to pull the data from the MongoDB collection and drop it into the Backbone.js collection which renders it in the app. What I cannot for the life of me figure out how to do is filter that data and re-render the app view. I am trying to filter by the "type" field in the document.
