  • Run as another user, but also as administrator

    I am trying to debug a virtual machine (VM) running on a remote computer from my workstation (A). Both VM and A are running Windows 7 Enterprise. Apparently, I need to start the Remote Debugger Service (RDS) on VM as an administrator. Apparently, I also need to run RDS as the user Tewr logged in on A (domain: DOM). VM runs the services i need to debug, as well as the remote desktop interface with an account VMUSER in a domain called VMDOMAIN. I manage to start RDS as administrator, but then the RDS process is owned by VMUSER and that's not good enough. I also manage to run RDS as DOM\Tewr, but then not as an administrator. I have Added DOM\Tewr as an administrator on VM, but thats not good enough becuase the process is still not run as administrator. How can I run the RDS process as DOM\Tewr and "As Administrator", while logged on in windows as VMDOMAIN\VM? (note: I have tried creating an account with the same credentials / password as VMUSER, as hinted in the ms article above, but with no luck...)

  • Can Remote Desktop Services be deployed and administered by PowerShell alone, without a Domain in WIndows Server 2012 and 2012 R2?

    Windows Server 2008 R2 allowed deployment of Terminal Server (Remote Desktop Services) without a domain, and without any insistence on domains. This was very useful, especially for standalone virtual or cloud deployments of a server that is managed remotely for a remote client who has no need or desire for any ActiveDirectory or Domain features. This has become steadily more and more difficult as Microsoft restricts its technologies further and further in each Windows release. With Windows Server 2012, configuring licensing for Remote Desktop Services, is more difficult when not on a domain, but possible still. With Windows Server 2012 R2 (at least in the preview) the barriers are now severe: The Add/Remove Roles and Features wizard in Windows Server 2012 R2 has a special RDS deployment mode that has a rule that says if you aren't on a domain you can't deploy. It tells you to create or join a domain first. This of course comes in direct conflict with the fact that an Active Directory domain controller should not be the same machine as a terminal server machine. So Microsoft's technology is not such much a Cloud Operating System as a Cluster of Unwanted Nodes, needed to support the one machine I actually WANT to deploy. This is gross, and so I am trying to find a workaround. However if you skip that wizard and just go check the checkboxes in the main Roles/Features wizard, you can deploy the features, but the UI is not there to configure them, and when you go back to the RDS configuration page on the roles wizard, you get a message saying you can not administer your Remote Desktop Services system when you are logged in as a Local-Computer Administrator, because although you have all admin priveleges you could have (in your workgroup based system), the RDS configuration UI will not accept those credentials and let you continue. My question in brief is, can I still somehow, obtain the following end result: I need to allow 10-20 users per system to have an RDS (TS) session. I do not need any of the fancy pants RDS options, unless Microsoft somehow depends on those features being present. I believe I need the "RDS Session Host" as this is the guts of "Terminal Server". Microsoft says it is "full Windows desktop for Remote Desktop Services client. I need to configure licensing so that the Grace Period does not expire leaving my RDS non functional, so this probably means I need a way to configure TS CALs. If all of the above could technically be done with the judicious use of the PowerShell, I am prepared to even consider developing all the PowerShell scripts I would need to do the above. I'm not asking someone to write that for me. What I'm asking is, does anyone know if there is a technical impediment to what I want to do above, other than the deliberate crippling of the 2012 R2 UI for Workgroup users? Would the underlying technologies all still work if I manipulate and control them from a PowerShell script? Obviously a 1 word Yes or No answer isn't that useful to anyone, so the question is really, yes or no, and why? In the case the answer is Yes, then how.

  • CloudBerry Online Backup 1.5 for Windows Home Server

    Overview CloudBerry Online Backup version 1.5 is a front end application for Amazon S3 storage for backing up your Windows Home Server data. It makes backing up your essential data to Amazon S3 an easy process in the event the disaster strikes. Installation You install the Cloudberry Addin as you do for any addins for Windows Home Server. On a PC on your network, browse to the shared folders on your server and open the Add-Ins folder and copy over WHS_CloudBerryOnlineBackupSetup_v1.5.0.81S3o.msi (link below), then close out of the folder. Next launch the Windows Home Server Console, click Settings, then Add-Ins. Click on the Available tab and click the Install button. It installs very quickly, and when you get the Installation Succeeded dialog click OK. You will lose connection through the Console, just click OK, then reconnect. After reconnecting, you’ll see CloudBerry Backup has been installed, and you can begin using it. You can setup a backup plan right away or find out what’s new with version 1.5. Amazon S3 Account If you don’t already have an Amazon S3 account, you’ll be prompted to create a new one. Click on the Create an account hyperlink, which takes you to the Amazon S3 page where you can sign up. After reviewing the functionality of Amazon S3, click on the Sign Up for Amazon S3 button. Enter in your contact information and accept the Amazon Web Services Customer Agreement. You’re then shown their pricing for storage plans. The amount of storage space you use will depend on your needs. It’s relatively cheap for smaller amounts of data. Just keep in mind the more data you store and download, the more S3 is going to cost. Note: Amazon S3 is introducing Reduced Redundancy Storage which will lower the cost of the data stored on S3. CloudBerry 1.5 will support this new feature. You can find out more about this new pricing structure. Note: Keep in mind that after you first sign up for an Amazon S3 account, it can take up to 24 hours to be authorized. In fact, you may want to sign up for the S3 account before installing the Add-In. After you sign up for your S3 Account, you’ll be given access credentials which you can enter in and create a Storage Bucket name. Features & Use CloudBerry is wizard driven, straight-forward and easy to use. Here we take a look at creating a backup plan. To begin, click on the Setup Backup Plan button to kick off the wizard. Select your backup mode based on the amount of features you want. In our example we’re going to select Advanced Mode as it offers more features than Simple Mode. Select your backup storage account or create a new one. You can select a default account by checking Use currently selected account as default. Now you can go through and select the files and folders you want to backup from your home server. Check the box Show physical drives to get more of a selection of files and folders. This also allows you to backup files from your data drive as well. It has full support for drive extenders so you can backup your shares as well. The cool thing about Cloudberry is it allows you to drill down specific files and folders unlike other WHS backup utilities. Next you can use advanced filters to specify files and/or folders to skip if you want. There are compression and encryption options as well. This will save storage space, bandwidth, and keep your data secure. Purge Options allow you to customize options for getting rid of older files. You can also select the option to delete files from the S3 service that have been deleted locally. Be careful with this option however, as you won’t be able to restore files if you delete them locally. You have some nice scheduling options from running backups manually, specific date and time, or recurring daily, weekly or monthly. Receive email notifications in all cases or when a backup fails. This is a good option so you know if things were successful or something failed, and you need to back it up manually. Email notifications… Give your plan a name… Then if the summary page looks good you can continue, or still go back at this point if something doesn’t look correct and needs adjusting. That’s it! You’re ready to go, and you have an option to start your first backup right away. After you’ve created a backup plan, you can go in and edit, delete, view history, or restore files. Restoring Files using CloudBerry To restore data from your backups kick off the Restore Wizard and select the backup to restore from. You can select the last backup, a specific point in time, or manually browse through the files. Browse through the directory and select the files you need to restore. Choose the destination to restore the files to. You can select from the original location, a specific location, to overwrite existing files, or set the location as the default for future restores. If the files are encrypted, enter in the correct passwords. If the summary looks good, click on Next to start the restore process. You’ll be shown a progress bar at the bottom of the screen while the files are restored. After the process has completed, close out of the Restore Wizard. In this example we restored a couple of music files to the desktop of Windows Home Server… But as shown above you can save them to the original location, other network locations, or WHS shared folders. This can make it a lot easier to keep track of files you’ve restored. You can also access different options for CloudBerry by clicking Settings in WHS Console then CloudBerry Backup. Here you can set up a new storage account, check for updates, app options, Diagnostics, and send feedback. Under Options there are several settings you can tweak to get the best experience for your WHS backups. CloudBerry Web Interface Another nice feature is the CloudBerry Web Interface so you can access your data from anywhere you have an Internet connection. To check it out in WHS Console, click on the Backup Web Interface link…you’ll probably want to bookmark the link in your favorite browser. Note: This feature is still in beta and at the time of this review, the Web Interface wasn’t up and running so we weren’t able to test it out. Performance The Cloudberry app works very well through the Windows Home Server Console. The amount of time it takes to backup or restore your data will depend on the speed of your Internet connection and size of the files. In our tests, backing up 1GB of data to the Amazon S3 account took around an hour, but we were running it on a DSL with limited upload speeds so your mileage will vary. Product Support In our experience, the team at CloudBerry offered great support in a timely manner when contacting them. You can fill out a help request through a form on their website and they also have a community forum. Conclusion We were very pleased with CloudBerry Online Backup for WHS. It’s wizard driven interface makes it extremely easy to use, and offers comprehensive backup choices for your Amazon S3 account. CloudBerry will only backup files that have been modified, so if files haven’t been changed, they won’t be backed up again.They offer a free 15 day trial and is $29.99 after that for a full license. Once you buy the app you own it, and charges to your S3 account will vary depending on the amount of data you upload. If you’re looking for an effective and easy to use front end application to backup your Windows Home Server data to your Amazon S3 account, CloudBerry is a recommended affordable choice.     i am using amazon simpledb with the aws_sdb gem and aws-sdb proxy as outlined in a documentation from amazon with ruby on rails and a local aws proxy that runs on webrick (providing a bridge with ActiveResource). see http://developer.amazonwebservices.com/connect/entry.jspa?externalID=1242 i am wondering if the aws-sdb-proxy (webrick!) is suitable for high traffic load, since webrick is supposed to be a development server. anyone has comments or experiences?

    We have installed windows 2008 R2 enterprise on a Dell server. This server is placed remotely in data center and only administrator is going to access it for maintenance purpose. No multiple users or client remote access is needed Now during 'remote desktop services' role installation network admin accidentally selected 'per user/device' licensing mode. Because of which now 120 days free try period is ticking. Since only administrator is going to access this server remotely we need to have 'Remote control for administrators' licensing mode (like windows 2003) on it. How we can change licensing mode from 'per user/device' to 'Remote control for administrators' on 2008 server? Also will it be possible to do this change remotely using RDC session itself? or do i need to change it using physical console (if remote access is gonna be disabled during switch)?

    Question: How do i tell RDWeb to launch apps from remote.domain.com rather then host.internaldomain.local? Environment: Existing org with AD forest. New single Server 2012 running all Remote Desktop Services roles for session host. Used the new 2012 wizard to setup "QuickSessionCollection" with roles: RD Session Host RD Connection Broker RD Gateway RD Web Access RD Licensing Everything works with self-signed cert, but we want to prevent those. The users are potentially non-domain machines so sticking a private root cert for on their machines isn't an option. Every part of the solution needs to use public cert. Added public remote.domain.com cert to all roles using Server Manager GUI: RD Connection Broker - Enable Single Sign On RD Connection Broker - Publishing RD Web Access RD Gateway So now everything works beautifully except the last step: user logs into https://remote.domain.com user clicks a app icon, which in background downloads a .rdp file that is signed by remote.domain.com. .rdp is set to use RD Gateway, which is remote.domain.com .rdp says app is hosted on internal host.internaldomain.local, which doesn't match the RDP-tcp TLS cert of remote.domain.com, and pops a warning. It's this last step that I'd like to fix. Is there a config option in PowerShell, WMI, or .config to tell RDWeb/RemoteApp to use remote.domain.com for all published apps so the TLS cert for RDP matches what the Session Host is using? NOTE: This question talks about this issue, and this answer mentions how you might fix it in 2008, but that GUI doesn't exist in 2012 for RemoteApp, and I can't find a PowerShell setting for it. NOTE: Here's a screenshot of the setting in 2008R2 that I need to change. It tells RemoteApp what to use for the Session Host server name. How can I set that in 2012?

    I have a need to store files on Amazon AWS S3, but in order to isolate the user from the AWS authentication I want to go via an ASP page on my site, which the user will be logged into. So: The application sends the file using the Delphi Indy library TidHTTP.Put (FileStream) routine to the ASP page, along with some authentication stuff (mine, not AWS) on the querystring. The ASP page checks the auth details and then if OK stores the file on S3 using my Amazon account. Problem I have is: how do I access the data coming in from the Indy PUT using JScript in the ASP page and pass it on to S3. I'm OK with AWS signing, etc, it's just the nuts and bolts of connecting the two bits (the incoming request and the outgoing AWS request) ... TIA R

  • Server 2008 R2 - Cannot add HP UPD PCL 6 - Failed with error 0x000000002

    I am having a problem with adding a print driver to one of our 2008 R2 RDS servers. On all other RDS servers in the farm there is no problem. The print server is 2008 R2. The HP Universal Print Driver PCL 6 is installed on the print server. When trying to add a printer with the driver on the failing RDS server i just get the error "Cannnot connect to the printer. Failed with errorcode 0x00000002" I have tried to add the driver to the RDS server localy but it fails with the same error. The driver has been installed before and is currently visible in the printmanagement.msc. When trying to remove the print driver i am unable to do it because it's "Currently in use" What to do? Have tried everyting - i think :-) Thanks. /Rasmus

  • Remote Desktop svchost (networkservice) & lsa.exe high cpu usage, hangs on welcome screen

    We have deployed an RDS Farm with 12 virtual RDS servers using Hyper V. Currently some users are not able to log on. After passing credentials to the connection broker, the session hangs on the "Welcome" screen. Using resource monitor we've seen that svchost (with the "networkservice" service) has a CPU usage of 50%, when viewing the wait chain on the process it displays that it's waiting for a lsa.exe to finish. We can't kill any of the users processes, even when trying with taskkill /f. Suspending lsa.exe did work but didn't have any effect. The networkservice also couldn't be restarted. Also, if this happens, the current users logged on to the RDS server can't be displayed. Task manager crashes when viewing the users, RDS service manager crashes when viewing the users (even remotely) and the cmd command "query session" doesn't work. No antivirus is installed on the RDS server. The only thing we can do is rebooting the server, which is not an option because of the fact that other users are in active sessions. Does anyone have ANY idea what's going on? We didn't encounter this in our pre-production setup.

    I am looking to code a file storage application in perl similar to amazon s3. I already have a amazon s3 clone that I found online called parkplace but its in ruby and is old also isn't built for high loads. I am not really sure what modules and programs I should use so id like some help picking them out. My requirements are listed below (yes I know there are lots but I could start simple then add more once I get it going): Easy API implementation for client side apps. (maybe REST (?) Centralized database server for the USERDB (maybe PostgreSQL (?). Logging of all connections, bandwidth used, well pretty much everything to a centralized server (maybe PostgreSQL again (?). Easy server side configuration (config file(s) stored on the servers). Web based control panel for admin(s) and user(s) to show logs. (could work just running queries from the databases) Fast High Uptime Low memory usage Some sort of load distribution/load balancer (maybe a dns based or pound or perlbal or something else (?).   • Why Shouldn't I Programmatically Submit Username/Password to Facebook/Twitter/Amazon/etc?

    I wish there was a central, fully customizable, open source, universal login system that allowed you to login and manage all of your online accounts (maybe there is?)... I just found RPXNow today after starting to build a Sinatra app to login to Google, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, OpenID, and EventBrite, and it looks like it might save some time. But I keep wondering, not being an authentication guru, why couldn't I just have a sleek login page saying "Enter username and password, and check your login service", and then in the background either scrape the login page from say EventBrite and programmatically submit the form with Mechanize, or use an API if there was one? It would be so much cleaner and such a better user experience if they didn't have to go through popups and redirects and they could use any previously existing accounts. My question is: What are the reasons why I shouldn't do something like that? I don't know much about the serious details of cookies/sessions/security, so if you could be descriptive or point me to some helpful links that would be awesome. Thanks!

    Hi, I'm using C# and the AWSSDK library form Amazon to test a few things in SimpleDB. All going well so far. However, I am trying to come up with a neat way of retrieving all Attributes that are applicable to a Domain. This is proving to be tricky without having to retrieve an Item, and obviously I can get the list of attributes then. But what if I have 100,000 Items in a Domain. Let's say the first 70,000 Items in a "Person" Domain have: FirstName, LastName, Address And then I hit a Item that has FirstName, LastName, Address, Phone And then I hit another Item around the 80,000 mark which has: FirstName, LastName, Email, Phone In the above example, for the Person Domain, how would I get a list that contains: FirstName, LastName, Address, Email, Phone ...without performing a ridiculous number of select statements? We run a small in house data center: about 20 virtualized servers (Debian Lenny, Windows 2003, Windows xp and Windows 7 machines), in a Citrix Xen pool running on 3 host servers and a SAN, plus a few standalone machines running legacy or specialized software that can't be vritualized. There is a big push everywhere now to move to cloud so we considering Ubuntu Cloud. I was wondering what are the pros / cons of running virtualized pool vs cloud to run all those machines? Thank you

  • PostgresQL on Amazon EBS volume, realistic performance, or move to something more lightweight?

    Hi, I'm working on a little research project, currently running as an instance on ec2, and I'm hoping to figure out whether I'm going down the right path. We, like a thousand other people, are making use of some of twitters streaming feeds to do gather some data to have fun with and my db seems to be having problems keeping up, and queries take what seems to be a very long time. I'm not a DBA by trade, so I'll just dump some info here and add more if need be. System specs: ec2 xl, 15 gigs of ram ebs: 4 100 gb drives, raid 0. The stream we're getting we're looking at around 10k inserts per minute. 3 main tables, with the users we're tracking somewhere in the neighborhood of 26M rows currently. Is this amount of inserts on this hardware too much to ask out of ebs? Should take a look at some things with less overhead like mongodb?
