  • How to restrict Windows 7 internet data usage while using mobile connection?

    When I'm travelling I would like to use my iPhone's mobile hotspot feature to provide Internet access for my Windows 7 laptop. However, my mobile data plan has a limit on the amount of data I can use per month, and I would like to restrict Internet access to a few very specific applications (such as a database administration tool and Chrome). Is it possible to create a firewall profile for use with mobile data access? If not, what tools exist that could assist me?

  • Do best-practices say to restrict the usage of /var to sudoers?

    I wrote a package, and would like to use /var to persist some data. The data I'm storing would perhaps even be thought of as an addition for /var/db. The pattern I observe is that files in /var/db, and the surrounds, are owned by root. The primary (intended) use of the package filters cron jobs - meaning you would need permissions to edit the crontab. Should I presume a sudo install of the package? Should I have the package gracefully degrade to a /usr subdir, and if so then which one? If I 'opinionate' that any non-sudo install requires a configrc (with paths), where should the package look (presuming a shared-host environment) for that config file? Incidentally, this package is a ruby gem, and you can find it here.

    up front -- definitely NOT a mission-critical kind of question. after a 'spring cleaning' of my local office, i've ended up with two 'spare' GigE switches at my home/office -- one managed, capable of VLANs, QoS, etc, and the other unmanaged. i've got more ports than i need. in fact EACH switch has more total ports than i need. but, since i can't have these just sitting around not doing SOMETHING ... ;-) i'm interested in ideas for best combined use of these switches. my local topology is simple: [ net ] -- [ adsl2 modem ] -- [linux firewall/router/DNS ] _______________| | [ some arrangement of the 2 GigE switches ] | ( ... stuff on the lan ... ) [WAP1] [voip ATA] [printer] [desktop1] [mail server] [Xen server [desktop2] ( mostly dev, [desktop3] + file server [desktop4] + media server)] the MailServer is a production mail server the XenServer serves some low vol to the 'net; the MediaServer guest serves ONLY to the LAN is there, e.g., any performance value in segmenting off any of the LAN using the managed switch (VLAN? QoS tagging? something?), feeding the rest into the connected unmanaged switch? or should i simply use one of the switches & be done with it, and use the other for a coffee-cup stand?

  • Custom attributes in Active Directory - determining usage/function and possible removal options?

    I've bumped into a highly-customized Active Directory environment (2003 FL) that's got me wondering if there's any particularly easy way to figure out what a custom attribute's function is, and what, if anything, is "using" that particular attribute. And then what some good options for potentially removing custom attributes from the schema might be. Aside from a restore or starting from scratch. If such an option exists. For example, I think I can be fairly certain what the "isDumbass" attribute with a value of TRUE means, but not so much with "IRPextCONST", containing a value of 393684. Likewise, I'd think it should be pretty safe to delete the "isDumbass" attribute, but would like to a) be sure and b) find out what's querying or updating that value anyway, because I suspect that anything using that attribute might be next on the list of things to remove. Ideally, without having to run a search on the contents of every custom script and bit of source code I can get my hands on, of course. And finally, aside from rebuilding from scratch, or doing an authoritative AD restore from backups that don't exist... is there a way to delete a given custom attribute? (Not blank the value, but actually delete the attribute from the schema - some folks would rather not have attributes like "FaggotMeter" and "DouchebagCounter" hanging around.) I've been able to find and successfully test a method on Windows 2k, but it seems like Microsoft disabled this option in SP4, and the domain in question is a 2003 functional level.

  • Is there other usage of Comcast extension cable and splitter?

    I have an unused Comcast high-speed internet self-install kit from 2006. It has two coils of extension cable, and a splitter, and some screws. The name of the cable is "extension cable" printed on the package. I wonder if that is its actual name? As ethernet cables are always useful, I wonder if the extension cables are totally worthless and should be tossed into a trash can? Or are they usable for some other purposes, or even sellable?   • Is there anyway that I can set the 'real' memory usage value while running my java code?

    I'm running a code on a server to generate a 10,000x10,000 matrix and save each value into a table (MySQL). I was informed by the administrator that I can use up to 32g of the physical memory of our server but have no idea how to do it. I googling around and so far only found information about setting the virtual memory using -Xmx. I tried it anyway and using top command I got this: PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ COMMAND 3981 gv 35 15 32.4g 304m 10m S 1 0.5 9:54.84 java So, it shows that the -Xmx set the VIRT and not the RES value. Is there anyway that I can set the RES value into 32g?

  • How can I monitor network usage by process on Mac OS X?

    Is there any way to find out which process using how much internet bandwidth on Mac OS X Lion? I'm on mobile internet now, which is not very fast, so it would be nice if I can tell that for example, Chrome using 10kB/s, and Skype using 2kB/s. I can see the total amount of traffic in Activity Monitor, but it is not enough for me. I'd like to use an existing application, not interested to write an app like this. And I'm not interested in the actual traffic, only the number of bytes transferred and received by each processes.

  • Can Kies provide a data connection so my phone can avoid mobile data usage?

    I regularly connect my Samsung phone by USB cable to my PC to charge it up, and when I run the Samsung Kies app on the PC I can sync data too. Is it possible for my phone to use my PCs internet connection through the USB link to avoid data charges? I don't have a wifi connection available. It would make sense if Kies could provide this, or perhaps there's some other way I can achieve it without wifi, such as using Bluetooth. I have a Samsung GT-S7500, though this question should apply to many other models.

  • Any Microsoft SQL Server 2008 licensing restrictions on usage?

    Does Microsoft have any problems with HOW I USE SQL Server Standard Edition 2008? I plan on using it to aggregate my clients various data sources and report on them (using the whole stack - SSIS, DB, Analysis Services and Reporting Services) via the web. I don't want to run into any issues with being accused of "re-selling" services / features when I'm not allowed to, etc. In essence, I'm charging people to build them solutions based on / using MY licensed copy and then giving them access to the final products. (reports, etc) It seems straightforward enough - but who knows with MS... (BTW, Licensed by processor / not CAL)

  • how to find out what is causing huge dentry_cache usage?

    Note that inode_cache & ext3_inode_cache slabs are very small compared to dentry_cache. What happens is that slowly and steadily the within a week dentry_cache grows from 1M to ~5-6G Then I need to run echo 2 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches && echo 0 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches This started to happening one day on all servers hosting some web code - the developers are saying that they have not changed anything related to filesystem access pattern around the time then the problem started. The system is centos5 with 2.6.18 kernel so I don't have any instrumentation features available th newer kernels. Any I idea how I can debug the problem? maybe with systemtap? This is a ec2 instance - so not even sure that systemtap will work there. Thanks Alex

  • Boot failure randomly. Can someone help?

    I often get stuck at the boot on battery. I can suspend and hibernate without any trouble (even on battery). If I plug the energy cable everything goes right most of the time (edited June 13). Adding "acpi=off" doesn't solve the issue. Disabling power save from LAN at BIOS doesn't solve this too. Memory test seems to be ok: I can even compile a kernel without a problem: Has someone a tip for this? (I have the same questions marks in my mind as the image shows if not more :-/ ) obs.: this is an upgraded installation from Natty alpha. edited I (May 22): I've installed a brand new final 11.04 and got the bug again. edited II (June 13): I thought it was solved but it is not. After spending eight days off, the same problem happened even with the power cable connected. I had to reboot about 6 times until success. edited III (June 14): I can boot (even with battery) if I disconnect the cable and take off the battery for a few seconds. This lead me to conclude that maybe something is kept into memory of some hardware. Maybe or maybe not related but I also have touchpad issues (jumps) with this machine. edited IV (June 25): I opened gconf-editor and went to apps gnome-power-manager and disabled everything possibly related to suspend or hibernate. No help. Also I grabbed a Fedora live usb pendrive and got the same problem: So I think it is a hardware problem related issue.

  • Plugged in, not charging&ndash;Windows 7

    Just a quick post on something I ran into lately with my Dell Precision M4500 laptop (monster laptop!).  I noticed the little icon in the system tray for the power options was stating that it was “plugged in, not charging”.  I don’t know why it was stating this, but I quickly found a fix for it on the net. I found the fix in this forum on CNET.  Here’s the fix: In order to correct problems with the battery's power management software, follow the steps below. 1. Click Start and type device in the search field, then select Device Manager . 2. Expand the Batteries category. 3. Under the Batteries category, right-click the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery listing, and select Uninstall . WARNING: Do not remove the Microsoft AC Adapter driver or any other ACPI compliant driver. 4. On the Device Manager taskbar, click Scan for hardware changes . Alternately, select Action > Scan for hardware changes . Windows will scan your computer for hardware that doesn't have drivers installed, and will install the drivers needed to manage your battery's power. The notebook should now indicate that the battery is charging.   And it did work.

A user asked me a question regarding if we can use similar reports to get the detail about Indexes. Yes, it is possible to do the same. There are similar type of reports are available at Database level, just like those available at the Server Instance level. You can right click on Database name and click Reports. Under Standard Reports, you will find following reports. Disk Usage Disk Usage by Top Tables Disk Usage by Table Disk Usage by Partition Backup and Restore Events All Transactions All Blocking Transactions Top Transactions by Age Top Transactions by Blocked Transactions Count Top Transactions by Locks Count Resource Locking Statistics by Objects Object Execute Statistics Database Consistency history Index Usage Statistics Index Physical Statistics Schema Change history User Statistics Select the Reports with name Index Physical Statistics. Once click, a report containing all the index names along with other information related to index will be visible, e.g. Index Type and number of partitions. One column that caught my interest was Operation Recommended. In some place, it suggested that index needs to be rebuilt. It is also possible to click and expand the column of partitions and see additional details about index as well. DBA and Developers who just want to have idea about how your index is and its physical statistics can use this tool. Click to Enlarge Note: Please note that I will rebuild my indexes just because this report is recommending it. There are many other parameters you need to consider before rebuilding indexes.   • How do I manage the technical debate over WCF vs. Web API?

    I'm managing a team of like 15 developers now, and we are stuck at a point on choosing the technology, where the team is broken into two completely opposite teams, debating over usage of WCF vs. Web API. Team A which supports usage of Web API, brings forward these reasons: Web API is just the modern way of writing services (Wikipedia) WCF is an overhead for HTTP. It's a solution for TCP, and Net Pipes, and other protocols WCF models are not POCO, because of [DataContract] & [DataMember] and those attributes SOAP is not as readable and handy as JSON SOAP is an overhead for network compared to JSON (transport over HTTP) No method overloading Team B which supports the usage of WCF, says: WCF supports multiple protocols (via configuration) WCF supports distributed transactions Many good examples and success stories exist for WCF (while Web API is still young) Duplex is excellent for two-way communication This debate is continuing, and I don't know what to do now. Personally, I think that we should use a tool only for its right place of usage. In other words, we'd better use Web API, if we want to expose a service over HTTP, but use WCF when it comes to TCP and Duplex. By searching the Internet, we can't get to a solid result. Many posts exist for supporting WCF, but on the contrary we also find people complaint about it. I know that the nature of this question might sound arguable, but we need some good hints to decide. We're stuck at a point where choosing a technology by chance might make us regret it later. We want to choose with open eyes. Our usage would be mostly for web, and we would expose our services over HTTP. In some cases (say 5 to 10 percent) we might need distributed transactions though. What should I do now? How do I manage this debate in a constructive way?

    After installing Ubuntu 12.04.3 on a Windows 7 laptop, running Ubuntu Disk Utility showed the following partition information; /dev/sda1 NTFS, Bootable, Filesystem, Labled: System Reserved, 105MB, Not Mounted /dev/sda2 NTFS, no flag, Filesystem, no label, 84GB, Not Mounted /dev/sda3 Usage: Container for logical partitions. Partition Type: Extended (0x05). no flags. no label. Capacity: 416GB /dev/sda5 Usage: Filesystem. Partition Type: Linux (0x83). no partition label. no flags. Capacity: 999MB. Type: Ext4(ver 1.0). Available: -. Label: -. Mount Point: Not Mounted /dev/sda8 Usage: Filesystem. Partition Type: Linux (0x83). no partition label. no flags. Capacity: 30GB. Type: Ext4(ver 1.0). Available: -. Label: -. Mount Point: Mounted at / /dev/sda6 Usage: Filesystem. Partition Type: Linux (0x83). no partition label. no flags. Capacity: 377GB. Type: Ext4(ver 1.0). Available: -. Label: -.     If you facing the issue that the web Analytics Reports in SharePoint 2010 Central Administration is not updating data. When you go to your site > site settings > Site Web Analytics reports or Site Collection Analytics reports  You get old data as in the ribbon displayed "Data Last Updated: 12/13/2010 2:00:20 AM" Please insure that the following things are covered: Insure that Usage and Data Health Data Collection service is configured correctly. Log Collection Schedule is configured correctly Microsoft Sharepoint Foundation Usage Data Import and Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Usage Data Processing Timer jobs are configured to run at regular intervals One last important Timer job is the Web Analytics Trigger Workflows Timer Job insure that this timer job is enabled and scheduled to run at regular intervals (for each site that you need analytics for). After you have insured that the web analytics service configuration is working fine and the Usage Data Import job is importing the *.usage files from the ULS LOGS folder into the WSS_Logging database, and that all the required timer jobs are running as expected… wait for a day for the report to get updated… the report gets updated automatically at 2:00 am in the morning… and i could not find a way to control the schedule for this report update job. So be sure to wait for a day before giving up :)

  • Google Maps API: Premier License or excess map loads?

    I am currently looking for a way on how to deal with the Google Maps API usage limits. I am planning a redesign of our page that will probably get around 2 million map loads per month. This will surely break the usage limit of 750000 map loads per month available in the free version. If we pay for excess map loads, this means we would have to pay 5000$ per month. The other option would be to use a Premier license, however there is very few information available on the usage limits for this and the price. I have filled the request form to get a custom offer from Google, but I did not get any response yet. Can anyone of the Premier license holders tell me which option will be cheaper for my usage pattern, paying for Premier license or paying for excess map loads?
