  I am helping a customer with general IT support, and they have a problem with a hosted web-based system being slow. The provider of the system blames the client's computer, and the client calls me for help. I blame the provider, but it is hard to get them to do something about it without rock-solid evidence. And every time the provider comes around for a TeamViewer session, everything of course runs smoothly. Does there exist a client program or browser plugin that tracks statistics about response time for specific web services?

• Any way to program a system which automatically restores home / sql database

  I have made two shell scripts Script 1: It does all Home directory backups with name username_home_date.tar.gz Script 2: It does SQL backups of all sites every 3 hrs. username_databse_date.sql.gz Now currently if I want to restore the site, I have to copy the tar file to /home/username and then untar there with all the permissions as well and then manually import the database. Is there any way (for instance a program, system or script) that I can just select which backup I want to restore and do automatically? Maybe like a cPanel addon thing.

  In Ubuntu, how can I make Quanta Plus the default editor for PHP files? In Windows we just use the open with context menu the first time for any new types of files and check use this application for these type of files. After that the files always open up in checked application. I want to know if Ubuntu has a similar feature. Also, if I open 2 PHP files then two instance of Quanta Plus opens up. How can I get the secondary PHP files to open on another tab instead?

• OS X Terminal using default ANSI colours for every theme

  For some reason, every theme I palette I've had installed for the OS X Terminal.app has reverted to using the default ANSI colours. The themes have been working fine up until this point and I can't seem to determine what could have caused them to revert in this way. For reference, my standard Solarized Dark colour scheme should look like this … … but it currently looks like this: A quick look in the preferences panel shows that all the colours are correct save for the ANSI colours which have reverted to their defaults. I don't know what other information would be helpful but if you need any other info to help me troubleshoot just ask and I'll update as quickly as I can.

• Is it possible to change the default scan folder on an Eye-Fi Wireless SD Card

  By default Eye-Fi cards scan the DCIM folder (and subfolders) used by most digital cameras for new images to upload. Is there a way of changing this to a different folder? In my particular case I'm using a Kodak photo scanner (P461) that uses a PHOTO(N) folder format to store the scanned images, as far as I know the device has no configuration interface to alter this setting so that doesn't seem to be an option. This topic on the Eye-Fi forums is the closest I've come to a solution, but a perfunctory investigation of Disk Probe doesn't make it obvious what needs to be modified on the card.

• IIS 5 default website (Stopped) after new install on new box

  We just got new boxes at work. Running Xp, IIs 5.1 (yeah I know corporate decision, not mine) when I go look at inetmgr (iis) the default website it stopped. if restarted, I get an error that it didn't respond in a timely manor I ran netstat -an, and -o and saw nothing had port 80 open. cleared my event viewer, restarted iis and restarted iisadmin service (and theirby smtp) no errors in the event log. I ran aspnet_regiis -i jsut in case. Still no joy. I'm stumped. Can any think of anything else to try? Thanks, E-

  I am new to handling issues on server. when my system tried to reboot I could see two installables to boot from. windows server 2012- current os windows server secondary plex. So when ever there is a system restart the system it stops at this screen. And since I am connecting to this server using RDP I have to wait for the hetzner console to click on of the os to boot. Even though the current os is set as default and time given is 30 sec, it still waits for a user input. So I want to know which of the two should I be using to boot and I just want one os.

  I have been considering replacing Ubuntu with OpenBSD to improve the security on my local server. I need to have ssh access to it, and I also need it to serve static web content - so the only ports I need open are 22 and 80. However, when I scan my server for open ports after installing OpenBSD 4.8, and enabling ssh and http at /etc/rc.conf httpd_flags="" sshd_flags="" I discovered that it had several other open ports: Port Scan has started… Port Scanning host: 192.168.56.102 Open TCP Port: 13 daytime Open TCP Port: 22 ssh Open TCP Port: 37 time Open TCP Port: 80 http Open TCP Port: 113 ident ssh (22) and http (80) should be open as I enabled httpd and sshd, but why are the other ports open, and should I worry about them creating additional security vulnerabilities? Should they be open in a default installation?

  I'm using ubuntu 9.10 and the default text editor is nano, which i hate. (doesn't everyone?) Normally it's not a problem as i just vi or gedit everything but crontab -e is opening with nano. I tried changing it to vim using sudo update-alternatives --config editor and selecting option 3 ("/usr/bin/vim.basic"). This has changed it for sudo and non-sudo alike. But crontab -e still opens nano. Any ideas? max

  When running any sudo command from Jenkins I get the following error: sudo: no tty present and no askpass program specified I understand that I can solve this by adding a NOPASSWD entry to my /etc/sudoers file which will allow user jenkins to run commands without needing a password. I can add an entry like this: %jenkins ALL=(ALL)NOPASSWD:/home/vts_share/test/sudotest.sh ...but this leads to the following issue: how to avoid specifying full path in sudoers file? I can add an entry like this: %jenkins ALL=NOPASSWD: ALL ...but this allows user jenkins to avoid the password prompt for all commands, which seems a bit unsafe. I'm just curious what my options are here, and if there are any best practices I should consider.

  We're using WSFTP, which has an Active Directory Integration module. To populate the user accounts you need to provide a connection string akin to: OU=Users,DC=domain,DC=com CN=Domain Users,OU=Users,DC=domain,DC=com Questions: Is there a Tool/Program/Script/Formula that allows me to decipher how these strings might look based on what I can see in Active Directory Users & Computers? Is there a proper/accepted name for these types of connection strings? I don't even know what to Google to get more information about how to format one properly How would I troubleshoot the connection string if I think it looks correctly formatted, but it isn't working?   On Windows there are system default printer forms which can't be deleted from the Print Server Properties dialog. Is there some other way they can be removed? We are never going to use page sizes like Envelope, B5(JIS), US Std Fanfold, etc. and I'd like to save users (and myself!) from having to scroll through a big long list of noise.   Is there any way to specify which monitor the console is displayed on in Linux? Details: I have a 3 monitor setup with 2 video cards. When I boot the computer, the BIOS displays on the PCI graphics card (which has a small monitor). When starting Linux, the console is displayed on the same monitor. Is there a way to have the console output on a different monitor? I'm using the vesafb framebuffer. I don't see a way in my BIOS to change the default video card.

• Windows 7 default VPN - Single Click to Connect

  The default way to connect to a VPN (standard includedd MS client) seems to be to click on the network icon in the system tray to expand it, then pick the VPN connection, and click the connect button. This brings up a dialog where you can enter your username and password. I have told the VPN connection to remember my credentials. Is there some way I can skip that dialog and just have it connect? I have tried using rasdial.exe, and I can connect as long as I pass the username and password as arguments. It doesn't seem to want to use the stored credentials for some reason, maybe I need to store them with an elevated account.

• Printer Properties not sending the correct page size to program

  We have a Zebra 2844 Label Printer with 4"x3" labels in it. When we check the page settings in Windows XP, it is set to the correct size. When we go to print out of any program, it prints 4"x11". I have checked the page settings in one of the programs that we are using and it does show correctly the 4"x3" settings but prints at the incorrect 4"x11". I have followed the steps here Paper size: Printer Properties vs Page Setup and here Is there a way to programatically set the printer properties in windows? but have not been able to glean enough information to figure it out. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it!

  Is there a program that would dump the complete structure of ID3v2 tags? Not just the frame names and values, but full information such as frame order, text encoding, description encoding (for TXXX frames), presence of unsynchronization, presence of multiple tags... Background: I'm rather curious why some files are incompatible with some programs. For example, some ID3v2.4 tags written by foobar2000 are not read by Winamp; editing with Mutagen fixes them but editing with foobar2000 breaks again. It's not the version or data encoding – most other v2.4 UTF-16 tags work fine... However, if I use foobar2000 to convert the tags to v2.3, then back to v2.4, they start working fine in Winamp – this last bit just does not make any sense. Edit: Linux or/and Windows.

  Hii all i am trying to change the port no of my tomcat server installed in ubuntu. for this i have changed the file server.xml and made a change there as: <Connector port="8081" protocol="HTTP/1.1" connectionTimeout="20000" URIEncoding="UTF-8" redirectPort="8443" /> But the problem is that whenever i try to open the localhost:8081 it is working fine but when i tried to open localhost:8080 then it is still accessible. So please explain this why this is happening. Secondly when i made the default port to 80 then localhost:80 or localhost then it was not accessible. So please explain this why this is happening. • How to restore default iPod playlists on Amarok?

  I wanted to "reset" the collection on my iPod and ended up accidentally deleting, through Amarok, all the playlists, including the default ones like "Most Played" and "Highest Rated". Since these are dynamic playlists with a special meaning for iPod, I don't think creating new, normal playlists with the same name will bring their special behavior back. How do I restore them with the same dynamic functionality? Is there a way to do that on Amarok? Rhythmbox? GTKPod? Command line? P.S.: not entirely sure what the policy about iPod questions are, but this one in particular seems to me to be very computer-related because, although it's about interfacing with a device, everything has to be done on my computer, using standard PC libraries/programs, etc. If it's still off-topic, please point me to where I could post it.

Because of this mismatch my old Django cronjobs fail since the required libraries are not in path. How do I resolve this issue and ensure that both the cronjob Django commands and the Django application have the same environment?

  I'm having trouble with Java on a virtual server, it always gives me the following error: # java Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. I first solved this by using the CACAO virtual machine (of OpenJDK, by putting it first in jvm.cfg), but then I run into problems with my web application (Play! framework based, gives me nasty LinkageErrors).   I have an IPv4 windows client program and IPv4 Linux server. What I need is to run them in pure IPv6 network, although machines have dual stack. At the beginning I thought it's not a problem: I'll use 4in6 protocol (rfc2473) and that's all. I found a simple guide for Linux configuration here, but when I started to configuring windows 7, I couldn't find how to do it. There are plenty of info on how to tunnel IPv6 over IPv4 (6in4, Teredo) but not an opposite. Does anyone know how to do it? Thank you.

• Migrate to SSD - NTFS mount point for Program Files

  Here is my thought. I have a new computer that I just built and am considering migrating to a SSD. I have Windows all setup and my Development environment configured so I want to avoid having to re-install a bunch of stuff. My thought is to clone my OS (win7) to the SSD and then mount a HDD partion to C:\Program Files (x86)\ with C being my SSD. This way as far as the programs are concerned they still live on the C drive but in reality they are physically located on the HDD. This seems to me like a good idea but after searching around a bit and not having found anyone else that had the same idea, I'm wondering why not. Maybe I am missing something that is obvious to everyone but me. Why is this a good or a bad idea?

• Cannot access an application folder in Program files

  I recently installed Windows 7 Professional 64bit on a new machine. I installed an application using a ClickOnce installer. The application runs fine, but I cannot access the application folder it created in c:\Program files (x86). It bombs with access denied. I try to view the properties on the folder and it takes about 1 minute to display (other folders take 1 second). It says I cannot view any information because I'm not the owner. It doesn't say who the current owner is (instead - Unable to display current owner.) but says I can take ownership. When I try it fails again with Access Denied, even though I have administrative permissions. Why can't I access this folder nor take ownership?

  I have Solaris machine with IP 10.10.10.100 and default getway 10.10.10.1 and subnet 255.255.255.0 remark - solaris machine connected to cisco switch via cross cable and from switch to my laptop I configure my laptop to connect to my Solaris machine so my laptop IP is 10.10.10.1 and subnet 255.255.255.0 but something not clearly I have ssh connection from my laptop to my Solaris machine ( I mean I in my solaris machine ) but from Solaris machine I can do ping to 10.10.10.1 ? ( how it can be ??? ) please advice why?
