• Unable to authenticate to Windows Server 2003 for file browsing as non-administrator user.

  I've got a windows server 2003 box containing a raid 5 array I use for mass storage. I want to set up a special non-administrator account that can be used to browse files over the network, with only read access. Ideally I'll map my network drive as this user to avoid accidentally hosing my data, and mount as an administrator user on occasions where I actually need write access. I've created a non-administrator user on the Windows Server box (called "ReadOnly)", and granted the user read permissions on the folders I need. However, when I try to browse to the files, and authenticate as this user, I'm told "Permission denied". If I throw the readOnly user into the administrators group, however, I can authenticate and browse just fine. I am, of course, only attempting to browse to folder for which I have given this user read permissions. Obviously my ReadOnly user is missing some privilege here, but I can't figure out what it is. I've been digging around in group policy editor all day to no avail. What am I missing? Fake Edit: I'm doing my browsing from a Windows 7 box, but I don't think that is relevant.

• Two Router issue, cannot reach internet

  I have on ADSL router and one CISCO Wifi Router. The ADSL Router is working fine on its own. I am connecting the lan port of the ADSL Router to the internet(RJ45) port of my Cisco wifi router. But I cannot access the internet from the Cisco router, neither through wifi nor through ethernet connection. The IP of ADSL router is 192.168.1.1 and the ip of my Wifi router is 192.168.1.100. Should I connect to the LAN port of my Wifi router rather than using the ethernet port(Marked as Internet)?

I don't want the users to download files with bittorrent (mainly used) and other p2p apps. I've also found some solutions about lowering p2p traffic priority using QoS. I really need to BAN p2p traffic. Does anyone know how to setup some rules to deny that kind of traffic ? I've tried to setup an Access Restriction Rule: But it's not working at all ...

• How to prevent Outlook from receiving multiple copies of the same email

  This question might be asked already, but it's different from this one. My boss has Outlook 2003, when he synchronize his emails while connecting through the local server (using Exchange I guess) he gets his emails normally. Once he is outside (not connection to our LAN) he gets each email duplicated 3 or 4 times. Does anyone experienced this before? and how can we fix this? Please no links to FAQ pages. For info, we are using Kaspersky anti virus and Windows 2003 server, with windows XP clients. [Update] Actually we have a bunch of 5 or 6 email accounts on Outlook, and only one of them recieve duplicated copies of the same email, all the others are cool. Further more all these email are using the sae service, Gmail for example. [Update 2] I just found out that Outlook is configured to remove emails from the server already, also, some emails exceeds 5 copies! Thank you

  I have two computers with gigabit LAN, one running Windows 7 and the other running Vista. I have a D-Link DIR-655 router, with gigabit LAN ports. I created a shared directory on the Vista computer, mapped it as a network drive on the Win 7 computer, and tried copying a 2 GB file... and it's going at 900 KB/s Yep... 900 kilobytes per second, about 7 Mb/s. Why so slow? Any ideas?

• WHS - client does not shutdown after backup

  I have my WHS/Win 7 laptop configured to do automatic backups through the connector. The backups run just fine every night. I put my computer in hibernate when I go to bed, it wakes and runs the backups, but then it doesn't go back into hibernate or shutdown. I'd like to be able to force it to shutdown after the backups are completed. I don't see a scheduled task in the system for the WHS backups. Any idea how I can get my laptop to shutdown after the backups are complete? Thanks.

• How to share a USB modem?

  Usually I wouldn't have this problem if it was a dsl modem or cable modem but it's really been difficult for me to share this little modem to other computers. Right now I have my laptop connected to a hub, both computers are in the same workgroup and I have "share this computer internet to other computers"... etc. Problem is, I don't know what is currently happening... • OS specific network delay, why?

  Since my new ISP installed their own router to my house(I rented a room in a student house so don't have much control on these), I started having strange delays. Any outgoing connection I do, be it http or ssh, is delayed for several seconds, and once it is established, I have no further problems. I open several simultaneous tabs in my browser and after about 5 to 8 seconds, they all connect and load simultaneously and quiet fast. I can actually play online games once I connect.What's more interesting is, I experience this only with Linux distros, namely Arch and some versions of Ubuntu. Access with Windows installs are quiet normal. What might be wrong with my router? Everything was fine with my old router but I have to use this one now.

• ubuntu eth0 not reconnecting after cable unplugged

  I'm running kubuntu 9.10 w/ gnome, I have a static IP defined in /etc/network/interfaces When I unplugged my network cable and rebooted, then reconnected the network cable I was not able to connect. I tried using sudo ifup eth0, and then ifconfig and it seemed as though the IP address had been assigned and I was connected, but I wasn't. I then did ifdown eth0, and again ifup eth0. For some reason I'm not able to access the network. Furthermore, I also attempted to connect via wlan, and was able to connect to the wireless network, but cannot "see" the network. I can't transfer data or access the internet or anything on the network including the router.   I have a bit of a weird internet setup. I am connected via a decent WiFi connection (from work) which I pick up using a Buffalo Airstation Wireless-G box. This simply picks up the signal and gives me 4 ethernet ports to connect to. That's all fine and works as it should. I also have a TP LINK TD-W8961nd router which used to be connected to the Airstation via an ethernet cable so I could essentially have WiFi access in my house. To cut a long story short I can't remember how the hell I got it to work and I can't find the notes I scribbled down on how to do it. I'm pretty sure I need to tell the router what ip to pick up the internet connection from and have the local wifi as a seperate network. How the hell I do that I have no idea right now. Can anyone give me some advice on this? If you need more information ask and I will be able to do so. Cheers in advance. edit I'm in work at the moment so I can't give 100% details but I will be able to later on.

• DD-WRT (WRT54G) and (THOMSON TG782) how to put them togather?

  Ok so let me explain, i bought WRT54G and successfully installed DD-WRT v24-sp1 (07/26/08) mini-special - build 9994. That's all ok no problems with it all normal functioning. And just to add (i don't need wireless, wireless is turned off always) What i want: ISP's router (TG782) from it's INTERNET port(out) cable "which was before in my pc" is connected to WRT54G's INTERNET port and then from WRT54G LAN port 1 to my pc. The problem: How do i connect and setup all? I have tried many times on many different ways but cant get it to work IF THE CABLE FROM TG782 IS CONNECTED TO WRT54G ON INTERNET PORT. If i connect the TG782 to Lan port 1 on WRT54G and my pc to lan port 2 then all works fine after i setup gateway and all. But i want to connect TG782 to Internet port of WRT54G because i need "Access Restrictions" and this only goes through WAN right? please correct me if i am wrong. What i have tried: This is how i have tried to setup all. The TG782 router ip is 192.168.1.1 And WRT54G ip is 192.168.1.30 so in WRT54G control panel i have setup like this: ----WAN Connection Type---- Connection Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP STP: Disabled ----Router IP---- Local IP Address: 192.168.1.30 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.1.1 (the TG782) ----Network Address Server Settings (DHCP)---- DHCP Type: DHCP Server Start IP Address: 192.168.1.100 Maximum DHCP Users: 6 And this wont work i probably miss something more, if anyone can help i would be thankfull. Also i have to note that i have tried to set my network adapter on pc to use the gateway of WRT54G and ip 192.168.1.102 In short: i cant get it to work normal only as a switch!   I got a wireless broadband modem (Huawei E1750) hooked up to my computer (call it A., running Windows-7) whose internet I wish to share to my other computer (call it B., also running Windows-7). A. is hooked up to my d-link DIR-600 router using a wired connection to port 1 on the router. B. is connected to the router using a wireless connection. Now I have tried setting up the sharing according to the help files for ICS but I have not been able to get it working. I suspect that there is something in my hardware configuration that is making it difficult. I would appreciate some tips and pointers as to what could be the reason to my problems.

• Windows XP can use a wired network port, but MacBook (OS X) fails on the same port

  I wired the Cat5 in my house seven years ago. The wired ports have worked fine with both my Windows XP laptop and MacBook. My wireless network also works fine, but I like to use wired occasionally. One of the Cat5 runs wasn't terminated with a jack, so I recently terminated this wire with a port/jack on the wall end and a standard Cat5 plug on the end that plugs into my router. This is the same setup as my other runs. Unfortunately, the MacBook isn't working well with the new wired port. The OS X Network System Preferences show the IP, Subnet, Router, etc., and everything looks fine. A "netstat -ibd" shows no errors or dropped packets. However, when I open a page in Safari, the status says "Contacting 'www.google.com'" and appears to hang. If I wait for a couple minutes, part of the Google page starts to display, but it is still not the full page load. When I use a Windows XP laptop on the same wired port, everything works fine. An internet speed test shows good results and all web pages load fine. A "netstat -e" under Windows shows no errors. I've used a Cat5 tester, and the cable tests fine (wires 1-8 light up in sequence). I've replaced both the port/jack and the connector twice to make sure I wired things correctly. I'd really like this Cat5 to work with the MacBook (and I'm trying to avoid running a new length of cable). Any ideas what the problem could be?

• Controlling an amplifier power supply from Squeezebox/SqueezeCenter

  I have a Squeezebox that is connected to an amplifier. I'd like the amplifier to switch on/off whenever the Squeezebox is powered on/off. I don't mind writing some plugin code to SqueezeCenter to do this but in hardware terms I am looking for off-the-shelf components. I imagine that I need some kind of Ethernet controlled power outlet. I have looked at X10 (I can't bring myself to link to their terrible site), but their product range seems extremely confused and it looks as though I'd have to use both RF and comms-over-mains to implement a computer controlled socket. Does anyone have any alternative suggestions? Note: Any components should be available and certified for use in the UK.

• OSX: iTunes won't play .ogg files over shared library

  I have an OSX 10.5 box that is sharing its iTunes library and another 10.6 box connecting to that library through iTunes. It works as expected except for ogg files. Those ogg files are visible and selectable in the shared library but will not play through the share on the client machine. If I move the ogg files to the client machine they play locally just fine. They also play locally on the host machine. They just won't play through the iTunes share. Is this a bug or some other known issue? Is there a fix, short of converting all ogg files to mp3?

• Slow network file transfer (under 20KB/s) on newly built x64 Win7

  I am getting <20KB/s for local network file transfer. If I transfer a very small file (less than 100KB) it would start quickly then slow down to <20KB/s. all subsequently network file transfer would be slow, a reboot is needed to reset this. If I transfer a large file it would be stuck on calculating for a long time and then begin with <20KB/s immediately. This is a newly built desktop running Windows 7 x64 SP1. Realtek gigabit LAN from the motherboard (ASRock Extreme3 gen3). Problematic speed is observed on the private LAN, both through ethernet and WiFi. The Router is D-Link DIR-655. Remote Differential Compression is off. Drivers are up-to-date from ASRock's website. I have tested network file transfer to and from another Windows 7 laptop and a MacBook Pro, so I am fairly certain it is the desktop's problem. The slow speed only happens with one direction also, outbound from the desktop, regardless of whether I initiate the file transfer action from the origin or the destination. Inbound network file transfer and internet speeds are fine, so I don't think this is a hardware issue. I am getting 74.8MB/s internet upload speed from speedtest.net (http://www.speedtest.net/result/1852752479.png). Inbound network file transfer I can get around 10-15MB/s. I am hoping this community has some insight for me to troubleshoot this. I don't see anything obviously related from the Event Viewer, and beyond that I just don't know where else to look. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated, thank you in advance.

• wireless network with cable modem and access point

  I have a Scientific Atlanta EPC2203 cable modem and a TP-Link TL-WA500G access point. When I connect my computer directly to modem with a CAT5e cable I have internet connection on my laptop (when i type ipconfig i see my external ip there, provided by isp). So I decided to have wireless network in the flat, allowing other devices to connect as well. I bought this wireless ap (TL-WA500G) configured Wireless security stuff, and connected it to my modem. With that configuration (by default AP has static ip of 192.168.1.254) only my computer can connect to internet over wifi, but not any other device. When I set the IP of AP to Dynamic IP (DHCP) it is the same. How should I change my configuration to enable all wifi devices to connect to internet?
