• Set default reminder pattern to iCal Calendar/Group

  Hi all I have in iCal some Calendars/Groups named Birthday, Exams and Holidays. Now I am wondering if I can assign a default reminder pattern to all Exams events, for example: 2 Weeks before, 1 Week before, 2 Days before. The result should be that I don't have to specify each time the reminder pattern of an event in Exams when I create a New one. NOTE: If iCal can't do this, is it maybe possible do that through an automator action etc.?

  I learned recently (on superuser) that Mac OS X uses the bash shell. I also know that OS X has a UNIX core. I was searching for information about OS X and Open Source on google, but what I found was this site: http://www.opensource.apple.com/ Which seems to include the source code for OS X. For instance, one of the links reads: Mac OS X 10.5.7 Source So, is OS X open source? There's an Apple Public Source License, but I'm bad at understanding legalese. Update Extra/Bonus question: Besides the kernel, What about the various other pieces? The X server? Window Manager? File explorer? etc. What's open source and what's not?

• Best way to restore individual folders via Time Machine after clean Lion install?

  I'm doing a clean erase and install of Lion, and am looking for the best way to restore individual folders into my home directory via Time Machine. I've done a dummy run, clean Lion install, then 'browse other disks' in Time Machine, navigate to my home folder and 'restore' what I need, such as pictures/music and folders inside the .library folder (such as Mail and Keychains). However this method seems to give you odd permissions, like this: http://i43.tinypic.com/15y82v4.png Hence I wondered if anyone knows what the best method is to restore files and folders after a clean install. N.b I do not want to use the migration assistant, or 'restore OS from Time Machine' - as I specifically want to do a clean install, and just copy over what I need (some folders will be moved onto a separate disk to the OS, and some will remain on the same disk). • How do I configure custom routes when an interface is configured?

  Other Superuser questions have addressed the issue of adding custom routes to access e.g.: multiple networks of a corporate network through one interface, while accessing the Internet through another interface. So assuming that I have a script to add specific routes when en0 is configured, and a separate script to add specific routes when en1 is configured, is there some way I can trigger those scripts to run automatically when Mac OS X/Darwin starts and configures those interfaces? Back in my Linux days, it was possible to add an option in /etc/network/interfaces along the lines of: iface eth0 inet dhcp up /usr/local/sbin/eth0-routes-up Is there something similar for Mac OS X?

  When I try to open a DMG file I get this: I'll just transcript the image: There may be a problem with this disk image. Are you sure you want to open it? Opening this disk image may make your computer less secure or cause other problems. What does that mean in fact? What's really wrong with it, and what kind of problem can it cause just by mounting? Someone said: When you download a file in Leopard (and Snow Leopard), it's marked as a quarantined file. This occurs by the OS adding an attribute to the file, tagging where it came from (such as "downloaded by Safari"). This is what causes the user to see prompts when running files that were downloaded from the Internet, you may remember being asked to confirm you'd like to launch program XXX downloaded by Safari on XXX date. As a new part of Snow Leopard, files which are tagged with the quarantine attribute also have integrity checked by fsck, and if that verify fails you will see the message you described, triggered by an unused node in the disc image. But really, I didn't get that. What's quarantine? I've just downloaded a file here on SL, tried to open, and got that warning. Apple have a say about quarantine files, and they seem to work the same on Leopards. Plus I have got that file using Google Chrome while that feature seems to work just with Safari.

• Mac Book Refuses to Boot

  I have a Macbook that has unfortunately died on me. I randomly got a pop up message that said I needed to restart my computer, and once I did, I was greeted with the blinking folder question mark start up screen. I've tried everything, including running Disk Utility repair and reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling OS X. All of my data is backed up and safe, I just need my computer to start again. Before I go off and buy a new hard drive, I wanted to see if there is anything I might have forgotten.

• Mac WLAN 802.11b+g WPA1 connection issues

  Hi, I have a Telewell TW-EA510v4 ADSL modem+WLAN router configured as follows: Mode: 802.11b+g Security Mode: WPA1 Pre-shared Key WPA Algorithms: TKIP Connections from only certain MAC addresses have been allowed and the MAC address of my Mac is in that list. The WLAN works just fine with iPhone and an old Acer laptop. It has worked for about two months or so with my MacBook Pro (year and a half or so old model). Ocassionally i've had minor problems with it, which have required either reboot of ADSL modem or reboot of my Mac. However now, for the last week or so I haven't been able to connect to it at all. This is what is what i get in the console when i try to connect: 5.5.2010 20.54.53 airportd[73731] Apple80211Associate() failed -3924 (Invalid PMK) 5.5.2010 20.54.53 Apple80211 framework[584] airportd MIG failed (Associate Event) = -3924 (Invalid PMK) (port = 104599) 5.5.2010 20.54.53 SystemUIServer[584] Error joining WLAN-M: Invalid password (-3924 Invalid master key) The pre-shared key I use is not incorrect. I'm 100% sure of that. The Error Log from the router only says this when I try to connect to it: May 05 21:09:54 home.gateway:i802_1x:none: <my mac address> associated May 05 21:10:00 home.gateway:i802_1x:none: <my mac address> disassociated May 05 21:10:01 home.gateway:i802_1x:none: <my mac address> disassociated Any ideas or tips to troubleshoot this further?

• Since upgrading to Windows 8.1, I can't open any files on a SMB share shared by my OS X Mavericks Mac

  I have a PC with Windows 8.1 and a Mac with Mavericks. I have a folder on the Mac that is shared with the PC. When I'm on the PC and I try to open a file that is shared by the Mac, such as an ISO file (a disk image), then I get a message saying that I cannot open the file, or the file is in use (it depends on the app/filetype). I have the same problem when I open a video file. Strangely, text files and PDF files are just fine. And if I copy any of the problematic files to the local Windows disk, then I can open them just fine. The specific error messages are: AVI files opened in VLC: "Your input can't be opened. VLC is unable to open the MRL." ISO files opened by Windows Explorer: "Sorry, there was a problem mounting the file." This only started happening after I upgraded to Windows 8.1 on the PC and Mavericks on the Mac. Mavericks upgraded its SMB version from SMB1 to SMB2, so perhaps that is related? Does anyone know what the problem might be, and how I could fix it? Thanks in advance!

• iChat can't authenticate to Lion Server 10.7.2 [migrated]

  I've enabled iChat and iCal Server through our local 10.7.2 Server which has DNS set up correctly. I can add the server account via a client's System Preferences (under other - Mac OS X server) and it authenticates with my shortname correctly. However, when I load iChat, I get this error message: Where the account is [email protected]. The password and username is correct. Console throws this error: 22/11/11 3:03:31.135 PM imagent: [Warning] XMPPConnection: Error: Error Domain=XMPPErrorDomain Code=105 "The operation couldn?t be completed. (XMPPErrorDomain error 105.)" UserInfo=0x7f81bbe2a3e0 {XMPPErrorText=service requested for unknown domain} DNS is set up correctly (it's working for Profile Management, Software Update Server and Web Services) but I can't get iChat to work correctly. How can I get clients to authenticate? FYI: It's probably worth noting that I get the exact same error messages when I use [email protected] instead of [email protected]. • Using Xbox 360 controller with Mac OS X (specifically turning it off)

  So I've been using this driver for a few months with the Xbox 360 Wireless Controller For Windows with my Mac Mini. Here's an article about the driver on Gizmodo. The driver works really well for actually using the controller, but there doesn't seem to be a way to power off the controller without pulling the batteries. Does anyone know of a replacement driver that includes power-off capabilities, or know of some other undocumented way to turn the controller off? Note: I've been having problems getting to the site, but it could be our corporate filtering.

• Changing dual-monitor settings without closing the laptop lid on OS X

  I have a Unibody MacBook hooked up to an external display. By default when I boot up, the system will go to dual-monitor mode. I want to use only the external display. The Apple supplied solution to this problem is to close the lid of the laptop which puts the machine into sleep mode and then move the mouse around to wake it up again. Because the machine is being woken up with the lid closed, when the displays are detected the system finds only the external. After the system is functional again, you can open the lid if you want and the laptop screen will be non-functional until you either tell the system to detect displays from the system preferences or you turn off the external display. Every time I want to use only the external display, I must reach my hand over to close the lid, wait for the machine to sleep, jigger the mouse, wait for the machine to wake up, and finally open the lid again because I don't want the machine to overheat. I feel that this is very stupid to have to do. Why is there no button or menu option that says "don't use this screen"? Is there any third-party software way to change the screen setup that does not involve physically closing the lid and playing a game of "are you sleeping" in order to switch such a simple software setting? We are in the 21st Century and honestly this is childish.

When I try to perform the installation say that cannot find the JDK; since the JDK is already installed by default in mac, the problem is export the java home. I´ve try a lot and I cant do it! I know that I have to add a line in a .bashrc file (or .profile, or .bash_profile) I´ve created all those files, at different times but nothing... I´m a new mac user, but I use Linux too and I dont know what happened, I just need to export java home to perform my work... and is really necessary for me to add environment variables too. • Automated git push attempt does not work - authentication issue

  I'm trying to automate a very periodic git add/commit/push cycle using a shell script and cron under OS X 10.8.5. The script is as basic as one would expect it to be: cd /my/directory git add . git commit -m "a commit message with the date" git push -u origin master I've tried running it both as root as well as a non-root user. When I do this manually, I get a dialog box from OS X requesting that I authenticate the operation. Running the script (either using cron or just using sh) ends up sending a message (via mail) to whichever user's cron executed the script saying that it was unable to write a file in the .git directory because of a permissions issue (which is most likely manual execution requires authentication). Is there any way to circumvent this issue, or give the script permission to perform this operation without having me intervene each time?

  I'm new to Automator. I need to launch a specific application and to click on one of its buttons. I've used the "Watch Me Do" feature to register the button click but, in the Automator events log, this action is being reported as "Bring the window XXX to the front." I'm then wondering if a better way exists to "record" a button-click. The reason behind my question is linked to this: http://superuser.com/questions/148386/mac-running-an-automator-task-at-night In fact, using the "Watch me do" approach, Automator is apparently not able to perform the click action when the machine is on sleep and a password is required.   I have a 2TB and a 4TB RAID 0 external drives (both have two physical hard drives in them). Both have a FW800, FW400, and USB port. My MacBook Pro has one FW800 port and two USB ports. I want to copy data from the 4TB drive to the 2TB drive. Is it better to A - connect both directly to the laptop, one with USB and one with FW800 or B - connect the 4TB drive to laptop with FW800 and the 2TB drive to the 4TB drive using a FW400 cable?   On Windows I use the PSPad editor which has a nice ALT-D timestamp which you can edit the format of, e.g. yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss. When working outside an editor, e.g. Google Docs, I have Autohotkey which I have programmed CTRL-D to insert a yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss timestamp. I am now working on a Mac mostly using TextWrangler as my editor but I can't find a timestamp hotkey in its features. What is the easiest way to get a yyyy-mm-dd hh:mm:ss hotkey on Mac, either in a (free) text editor or a (free) autohotkey equivalent?

  Automator allows to save a workflow as an application bundle. It uses an Automator specific icon for doing this. I want to change this icon (using different icons for different workflows). I can do this by going into the application bundle and change the icon with Icon Composer. The disadvantage of this solution is that if I open the application bundle in Automator and save it, it uses the default icon again. Is there a way to change the icon for good?

  Occasionally, like right at this moment, I cannot access my windows share from my mac. Normally, it works, but every now and then, the computer name won't be displayed under SHARED in Finder. Rebooting the windows computer usually fixes this, but it's inconvenient. The Windows computer can see the Mac on the network. Is there a method of asking finder to poll for windows shares again, or "forcing" finder to look for "desktop"? I'm looking for the equivalent of \desktop in the address bar of a Windows computer. • Truecrypt or default Disk Utility on Mac?

  Windows by default doesn't come with a password protect folder option (other that Win7 ultimate), so I used to swear by Truecrypt which was great. But I've read in a couple of places that Mac OS X by default has a way of protecting folders using the Default Disk Utility. So my question is which is better, using TrueCrypt on the Mac or just sticking with the default Disk Utils app? Can somebody let me know the advantages of one over the other? A summary from the very helpful answers below: if you're looking for cross-platform usage Truecrypt is the obvious tool of choice if you're looking for convenience, and intend to stick only to the Mac platform, use the default Disk Utils app.
