  • determine if udp socket can be accessed via external client

    - by JohnMerlino
I don't have access to company firewall server. but supposedly the port 1720 is open on my one ubuntu server. So I want to test it with netcat: sudo nc -ul 1720 The port is listening on the machine ITSELF: sudo netstat -tulpn | grep nc udp 0 0 0.0.0.0:1720 0.0.0.0:* 29477/nc The port is open and in use on the machine ITSELF: lsof -i -n -P | grep 1720 gateway 980 myuser 8u IPv4 187284576 0t0 UDP *:1720 Checked the firewall on current server: sudo ufw allow 1720/udp Skipping adding existing rule Skipping adding existing rule (v6) sudo ufw status verbose | grep 1720 1720/udp ALLOW IN Anywhere 1720/udp ALLOW IN Anywhere (v6) But I try echoing data to it from another computer (I replaced the x's with the real integers): echo "Some data to send" | nc xx.xxx.xx.xxx 1720 But it didn't write anything. So then I try with telnet from the other computer as well: telnet xx.xxx.xx.xxx 1720 Trying xx.xxx.xx.xxx... telnet: connect to address xx.xxx.xx.xxx: Operation timed out telnet: Unable to connect to remote host Although I don't think telnet works with udp sockets. I ran nmap from another computer within the same local network and this is what I got: sudo nmap -v -A -sU -p 1720 xx.xxx.xx.xx Starting Nmap 5.21 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2013-10-31 15:41 EDT NSE: Loaded 36 scripts for scanning. • Plans for Java 7 and E-Business Suite Certification

    - by Steven Chan (Oracle Development)
As of June 2012, Java 7 has not been certified yet with Oracle E-Business Suite.  EBS customers should continue to run JRE 6 on their Windows end-user desktops, and JDK 6 on their EBS servers. If a search engine has brought you to this article, please check the Certifications summary for our latest certified Java release. Our plans for certifying Java 7 for the E-Business Suite We plan on releasing the Java 7 certification for E-Business Suite customers in two phases: Phase 1: Certify JRE 7 for Windows end-user desktops Phase 2: Certify JDK 7 for server-based components When will Java 7 be certified with EBS? We're working on the first phase now. As usual, I cannot discuss release dates here, but you can monitor or subscribe to this blog for updates. Current known issues with JRE 7 in EBS environments Our current testing shows that there are known incompatibilities between JRE 7 and the Forms-invocation process in EBS environments.  We have been working directly with the Java division on this for a while now.  In the meantime, EBS customers should not deploy JRE 7 to their end-user Windows desktop clients. You should stick with JRE 1.6 for now.  But wait, you previously said... Older JRE certification announcements stated: Our standard policy is that all E-Business Suite customers can apply all JRE updates to end-user desktops from JRE 1.6.0_03 and higher.  We test all new JRE releases in parallel with the JRE development process, so all JRE releases are considered certified with the E-Business Suite on the same day that they're released by our Java team.  You do not need to wait for a certification announcement before applying new JRE releases to your EBS users' desktops. Yes, this is true.  This standard boilerplate text was written before JRE 7 was released, so there was no possibility of misunderstanding.  With the availability of JRE 7, that boilerplate needs to be revised to read: Our standard policy is that all E-Business Suite customers can apply all JRE updates to end-user desktops from JRE 1.6.0_03 and later updates on the 1.6 codeline.  We test all new JRE 1.6 releases in parallel with the JRE development process, so all new JRE 1.6 releases are considered certified with the E-Business Suite on the same day that they're released by our Java team.  You do not need to wait for a certification announcement before applying new JRE 1.6 releases to your EBS users' desktops. • Microsoft Innovation Day (Moscow, Russia)

    - by Bigtrend
New event from Microsoft about new techonologies which are going to be released during the current year. What can we say about these new technologies? Many advertising without exceptional ideas. Unfortunately it is true for the whole industry - the only idea from the far future is clouding computing which is not relevant to the really new approach in development. I understand that we can provide facilitation to the development community as well as new UI features for the end-users but in fact the...(read more)

  • Game engine development in C++ [closed]

    - by Chris Cochran
I am arriving at completion on a multithreaded concurrency framework designed for high-performance computing. Though I am not a gamer, it has occurred to me that this stand-alone software core could be an ideal basis for a multiprocessor game engine (64-bit native C++, 5000+ entry points). Are there any websites I could visit to discuss this technology with programmers and developers who could really benefit from it?

  • Empirical evidence regarding testability

    - by Xodarap
A google scholar search turns up numerous papers on testability, including models for computing testability, recommendations for how ones code can be more testable, etc. They all come with the assertion that more testable code is more stable, but I can't find any studies which actually demonstrate this. Can someone link me to a study evaluating the effect of testable code vs. quality? The closest I can find is Improving the Testability of Object Oriented Systems, which discusses the relationship between design flaws and testability.

  • Is the TCP protocol good enough for real-time multiplayer games?

    - by kevin42
Back in the day, TCP connections over dialup/ISDN/slow broadband resulted in choppy, laggy games because a single dropped packet resulted in a resync. That meant a lot of game developers had to implement their own reliability layer on top of UDP, or they used UDP for messages that could be dropped or received out of order, and used a parallel TCP connection for information that must be reliable. Given the average user has faster network connections now, can a real time game such as an FPS give good performance over a TCP connection?

  • Keeping your options open in a cloud solution

    - by BuckWoody
In on-premises solutions we have the full range of options open for a given computing solution – but we don’t always take advantage of them, for multiple reasons. Data goes in a Relational Database Management System, files go on a share, and e-mail goes to the Exchange server. Over time, vendors (including ourselves) add in functionality to one product that allow non-standard use of the platform. For example, SQL Server (and Oracle, and others) allow large binary storage in or through the system – something not originally intended for an RDBMS to handle. There are certainly times when this makes sense, of course, but often these platform hammers turn every problem into a nail. It can make us “lazy” in our design – we sometimes don’t take the time to learn another architecture because the one we’ve spent so much time with can handle what we want to do. But there’s a distinct danger here. In nature, when a population shares too many of the same traits, it can cause a complete collapse if a situation exploits a weakness shared by that population. The same is true with not using the righttool for the job in a computing environment. Your company or organization depends on your knowledge as a professional to select the best mix of supportable, flexible, cost-effective technologies to solve their problems, whether you’re in an architect role or not.  So take some time today to learn something new. The way I do this is to select a given problem, and try to solve it with a technology I’m not familiar with. For instance – create a Purchase Order system in Excel, then in Hadoop or MongoDB, or even in flat-files using PowerShell as an interface. No, I’m not suggesting any of these architectures are the proper way to solve the PO problem, but taking something concrete that you know well and applying that meta-knowledge to another platform will assist you in exercising the “little grey cells” and help you and your organization understand what is open to you. And of course you can do all of this on-premises – but my recommendation is to check out a cloud platform (my suggestion would of course be Windows Azure :) ) and try it there. Most providers (including Microsoft) provide free time to do that.

  • How do you check out what's hot in the open source space?

    - by Fanatic23
I am trying to look for resources (sites, magazines, blogs, twitter etc) that track what's hot and happening in the open source space. This is programming language agnostic, I am more interested in knowing what kind of cool apps people are coming up these days particularly in the enterprise and scientific computing space. I am also into compilers, debuggers and other low level stuff. Any help appreciated.
