• Mail server responds with Error 500 line too long

  I am occasionally receiving error messages from mail servers with the above message. It seems that at least one line in the e-mail has more than 999 characters and therefore the e-mail is bounced. Is this "by design"? in an RFC? Or some weird pseudo-spam-filter? Or just a bad mailserver? I googled around a bit but did not find a competent answer. Hopefully one of you guys can enlighten me.

• How to troubleshoot a remote wmi query/access failure?

  Hi I'm using Powershell to query a remote computer in a domain for a wmi object, eg: "gwmi -computer test -class win32_bios". I get this error message: Value does not fall within the expected range Executing the query local under the same user works fine. It seems to happen on both windows 2003 and also 2008 systems. The user that runs the shell has admin rights on the local and remote server. I checked wmi and dcom permissions as far as I know how to do this, they seem to be the same on a server where it works, and another where it does not. I think it is not a network issue, all ports are open that are needed, and it also happens within the same subnet. When sniffing the traffic we see the following errors: RPC: c/o Alter Cont Resp: Call=0x2 Assoc Grp=0x4E4E Xmit=0x16D0 Recv=0x16D0 Warning: GssAPIMechanism is not found, either caused by not reassembled, conversation off or filtering. And an errormessage from Kerberos: Kerberos: KRB_ERROR - KDC_ERR_BADOPTION (13) The option code in the packet is 0x40830000 Any idea what I should look into?

  I want to run my own root server (directly accessible from the web without a hardware firewall) with debian lenny, apache2, php5, mysql, postfix MTA, sftp (based on ssh) and maybe dns server. What measures/software would you recomend, and why, to secure this server down and minimalize the attack vector? Webapplications aside ... This is what I have so far: iptables (for gen. packet filtering) fail2ban (brute force attack defense) ssh (chang default, port disable root access) modsecurity - is really clumsy and a pain (any alternative here?) ?Sudo why should I use it? what is the advantage to normal user handling thinking about greensql for mysql www.greensql.net is tripwire worth looking at? snort? What am I missing? What is hot and what is not? Best practices? I like "KISS" - Keep it simple secure, I know it would be nice! Thanks in advance ...

• Bulk Email Verification Tool

  I'm looking for a bulk email validation tool to parse a list of 60K email addresses. Our company sends out 8 Million email newsletters a month via our mailing list software - MDAEMON. MDAEMON ships with a bad email address validator but I'm not quite comfortable with its results as it captures returned email addresses with SMTP errors of 500 and above. (We want to keep emails that return a Full Mailbox error or bounce backs that see us as SPAM) To further prune the list, we use Advanced Email Verifier. But I tested a random sample of this list and found a couple emails to be valid. Since our company relies heavily on traffic from our newsletters, I am wondering what other Windows-based bulk email verifier tools are out there?

• Problems with mailenable when sending to yahoo mail

  I'm testing sending emails from mailenable webmail. I have no problems sending mail to gmail or hotmail, both work fine, but yahoo mail sends my messages to the spam folder and shows the attachment icon for the message even though the message doesn't contain any attachments, it's just plain text. It only includes a reply to a previous message, like this: message text ----- Original Message ----- original message text I copied the message content and sent it from gmail to yahoo and the attachment icon didn't show which makes me believe it's something with mailenable. What could possibly be wrong? Also, is there a white list for yahoo mail that I can join? And also for other popular webmail? I'm going to use this on a production website (site visitors use the contact us form to send messages to the site - the mail enable server running on the same machine as the web server - then I check the messages using the mailenable webmail and reply them). This is really important to me, your help would be really appreciated ...

• Ironport X-Junk header.

  My school uses Ironport for filtering/monitoring web traffic. I have a bit of curiosity as to why it tacks on a x-junk: header onto everything. After going through a few curl tests, I've found no real connection between what is shown on the page and the x-junk: header. here's my curl request: any ideas? • Ubuntu not connecting to network in Hyper-V

  I am unable to connect the Ubuntu guest (both 12.10 and 12.04) to the internet via hyper-V. Here is what I have done so far (with much thanks due to @Kronos's blog post on the topic): Created a switch in the switch manager with connection set to external, selected my wifi card (Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN). If it matters, the Microsoft Filtering Platform is checked under extensions. Added this switch to my Ubuntu guest. I also tried a different wireless card (Aethros 9285) same issue. Connecting through my wired card works just fine (assume that I select that card, and I am wired in of course). Making it a legacy network adapter does not fix the issue. Ubuntu can see this connection, but is unable to connect to it. What follows is what I attempted to do to get Ubuntu to connect: Start and restart the network manager Restart the machine Verify that it could in fact see the adapter (resulted in device not ready a few times) How can I get this to work properly?

  I'm trying to configure a virtual machine (VirtualBox guest running Backtrack 4) with a bridged adapter over a VPN connection. The VPN is is hosted by the cybersecurity club at my university, and connects to a sandboxed LAN designed for penetration testing against various servers that the club has built. My host (Windows 7 Ultimate) connects to the VPN fine and is assigned an IP through DHCP, but for some reason the VM can't do the same thing, and I'm not sure why. It's like OpenVPN is filtering out packets from the MAC address it doesn't recognize. I want the virtual machine to bridge over the VPN connection, because our IT office has very strict policies about what you can and can't do on the network. I want to be able to run active attacks (ARP spoofing, nmap, Nessus scans) in the sandbox environment without risking the traffic accidentally going over the university network and getting my internet access revoked. Bridging over the VPN connection and running all attacks from inside the VM would solve that problem. Any idea why the host can use this interface, but the VM can't?

• Custom dedicated email server combined with Amazon AWS?

  Hi there. We are considering moving our servers to Amazone EC2 cloud. The only thing that stops right now is their problems with ip ranges banned from spam mail lists like SORBS. We are considering leaving one dedicated server in our current hosting, the one which we use to send mail (and other several features we will move to EC2), in order to be able to send the mails from this smtp server instead from Amazon. So, the idea is to have our sites hosted in EC2, and when they need to send mail, redirect they to our "local" smtp server. Do you think it´s viable? Can you think on a better solution? • What's the difference between a Table and a Named Range in Excel 2007?

  Can someone explain the difference between Tables and Named Ranges in Excel 2007? It seems that in addition to having the features of Named Ranges, they're somehow marked as Tables which gives them special formatting & filtering options in the ribbon. Other questions: Can I treat a table as a named range? Does a named range provide me any functionality not offered by a table, and vice versa? Should I use one over the other (assuming that consumers of the spreadsheet are using Excel 2007 or higher)? Google has not been helpful (excel difference between named range and table and excel 2007 difference between named range and table) and I've found one resource describing table functionality, but no reference to named ranges.

• Set up internal domain to use external SMTP in Exchange 2007

  I'm moving to Google Apps and have setup dual-delivery. Everything is fine, but for mail sent internally (from [email protected] to [email protected]), Exchange is not using the send connectors I have pointing to Google's servers. I believe my question is similar to this question: How to force internal email through an smtp connector in exchange 2007 Again, if a user is connected to the Exchange server and tries to send to [email protected] it works just fine, but I cannot seem to force *@mydomain.com to route correctly. This should be a fairly simple, but according to this: google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Apps/thread?tid=30b6ad03baa57289&hl=en (can't post two links due to spam prevention) It does not seem possible. Any ideas?

• "Fast link detected" warning in GP management console

  There is a message that is shown in every report i make in Group Policy Results section of Group Policy Management Console, saying that "A fast link is detected". I followed the link in the waring, but after I read the page several times, I concluded, that I can ignore the warning. However, I noticed that the group policies are not applied when security filtering is used untl "gpupdate /sync" is executed... Is this related to the fast sync? In general, can somebody explain me the consequences of fast links briefly?

• forward mails from sendmail + mimedefang on two unix boxes

  I am not a unix expert, more like a novice. I have one user account replicated on two unix boxes receiving same mails on both boxes for fail over. Sendmail has mimedefang utility running to process these mails. After all the processing is complete, more like weeding the spam, viruses etc. I need to forward these mails coming to the same account on both boxes to goto a central mailbox on MS Exchange for this account. Problem is I am using .forward file hence both unix boxes forward the mail after processing. I just want to be able to ignore one of the two mails. Has anyone tried something similar? any directions? Please?

Alternatively, do you have any ideas for setting up one at home using a proxy with an auto updating list? UPDATE - AutoUpdating list so the new sites are categorized and downloaded and the filtering is done by category instead of per site e.g. peerblock works this way Appliance as in a small dedicated hardware or device to perform this task, like WD TV live or Acer Aspire Revo with the media center edition I'd be ok with setting up Squid / Linux / SquidGuard even if i'm not familiar with *nix but ideally a small form factor pc with dual nic's would be ideal so it can be out of sight for the most part !

• Wife's Email going into Junk Mail folder in Outlook despite turning off Junk Mail

  I recently started a new job. Today I tried emailing my wife from my new company email account. When she responded, her email went into the "Junk E-mail" folder. So I tried a few things: Added her to the "Safe Senders" list Added her as an Outlook contact and checked the "Also trust email from my Contacts" box in the "Safe Senders" tab Added her domain to the "Safe Senders" list Switched from "Low" to "No Automatic Filtering" in the Junk Email options No matter what I would do, her emails would still go into the Junk Email folder. Can anyone recommend additional things to try? EDIT: This is using Exchange.

• Google and Yahoo redirect my site to malware, but direct url works fine. Any computer

  I can go directly to the site doublewing.org or www. without issue, but if I click on the link in google or yahoo it redirects to spam sites. Swagbucks works though! This is not on a single computer this happens on systems isolated from each other(Try it, avast blocks it) . The site is runing joomla 1.5.25 . I deleted .htacces, put fresh index.php and index2.php files. and still get the same results. Any ideas?

• What is Causing this IIS 7 Web Service Sporadic Connectivity Error?

  On sporadic occasions we receive the following error when attempting to call an .asmx web service from a .Net client application: "The underlying connection was closed: A connection that was expected to be kept alive was closed by the server. Unable to read data from the transport connection: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host." By sporadic I mean that it might occur zero, once every few days, or a half-dozen times a day for some users. It will never occur for the first web service call of a user. And the subsequent (usually the same) call will always work immediately after the failure. The failures happen across a variety of methods in the service and usually happens between 15-20 seconds (according to the log) from the time of the request. Looking in the IIS site log for the particular call will show one or the other of the following windows error codes: 121: The semaphore timeout period has elapsed. 1236: The network connection was aborted by the local system. Some additional environment details: Running on internal network web farm consisting of two servers running IIS7 on Windows Server 2008 OS. These problems did not occur when running in an older IIS6 web farm of three servers running on Windows Server 2003 (and we use a single IIS6/2003 instance for our development and staging environments with no issues). EDIT: Also, all of these server instances are VMWare virtual machines, not sure if that is a surprise anymore or not. The web service is a .Net 2.0/3.5 compiled .asmx web service that has its own application pool (.Net 2.0, integrated pipeline). Only has Windows Authentication enabled. We have another web service on the farm that uses the same physical path as the primary service, the only difference being that Basic Authentication is enabled. This is used for a portion of our ERP system. Have tried using the same and different application pool - no effect on the error. This site isn't hit as often as the primary site and has never had an error. As mentioned, the error will only happen when called from the .Net client - not from other applications. The client application is always creating a new web service object for each request and setting the service credentials to System.Net.CredentialCache.DefaultCredentials. The application is either deployed locally to a client or run in a Citrix server session. Those users running in Citrix doesn't seem to experience the issue, only locally deployed clients. The Citrix servers and the web farm are located in the same physical location and are located in the same IP range (10.67.xx.xx). Locally deployed clients experiencing the error are located elsewhere (10.105.xx.xx, 10.31.xx.xx). I've checked the OS logs to see if I can see any problems but nothing really sticks out. EDIT: Actually, I myself just ran into the error a little bit ago. I decided to check out the logs again and saw that there was a Security log entry of "Audit Failure" at the 'same' time (IIS log entry at 1:39:59, event log entry at 1:39:50). Not sure if this is a coincidence or not, I'll have to check out the logs of previous errors. The network infrastructure group said they checked out the DNS and any NIC settings are correct so there is no 'flapping'. Everything pans out. I'm not sure that they checked out any domain controller servers though to see if that could be an issue. Any ideas? Or any other debugging strategies to get to the bottom of this? I'm just the developer in charge of the software and don't really have the knowledge on what to investigate from the networking side of things - although it does sound like a networking issue to me based on what is happening. • Has anyones successfully configured mutt for GMail on FreeBSD? If so, how?

  I've tried following the instructions here and here. Currently, I can read email from my GMail account, but not send—this is on a personal computer, so even if I configured Sendmail, I doubt any of the mail would survive the spam filter gauntlet. Both guides seem to require the --enable-smtp option for mutt, which I don't think is being exposed by ports. I've tried the mutt and mutt-devel ports and neither seem to give me that option. On a far less important note, I also haven't been able to change folders, e.g., I get told that Sent Mail is not a valid folder when I attempt to go into it. If you can troubleshoot this problem, it's pure gravy. I really only care about sending. Thanks, Hank

• Is the view history in Firefox 3.6.3 broken or is there an "undocumented feature"?

  Firefox View History Before Firefox 3.6.3 when I clicked Ctrl+H it would display my browsing history and I would be able to search it, sort it by Most Visited, Last Visited, etc. Since 3.6.3 I have been having issues: Firefox does not display any entries when filtering by Most Visited or Last Visited. Searching does not work regardless of what keyword I use (i.e. if I type stackoverflow it won't even find it, although it's one of the most visited web sites in my history). Is anybody experiencing similar problems? Are there any known issues that might be causing the problems that I'm seeing?

• Are Motherboards for the Acer Aspire One AOA150 Netbook Compatible with the AOA110?

  I have an Acer Aspire One ZG5 AOA110-1588 netbook, and the motherboard doesn't have a port for a SATA 2.5 inch hard drive; it only supports this slow 8GB SSD type drive. Through research I've discovered that the AOA150 motherboards do have a SATA slot, and the bottom plate of these laptops have an appropriate protrusion for the drive to fit in (for example, compare this to this). The AOA110 and AOA150 models are very similar in appearance and specs. I've even seen tutorials that involve soldering a SATA connector onto the AOA110's motherboard, essentially creating an AOA150 motherboard (right?) So, could I just swap out the motherboard in my netbook with the MBS0506001? (I'd post another link to the actual board but can't because of the spam prevention...) I assume I would also need to purchase and replace the bottom cover with a larger one and possibly get a hard drive caddy as well...? Thanks!

• Sharp flat panel scaling with Nvidia drivers

  I have a Samsung 226BW flat panel with a 1680x1050 native resolution. As my PC is rather dated (Athlon XP 2600+ and GeForce 6600 GT), I need to run more recent games (but still old) on a lower resolution. Unfortunately, scaling low resolutions to 1680x1050 results in a very blurry image (bilinear scaling). I have created a custom resolution of 840x525 in the Nvidia control panel. Technically, this resolutions allows perfect upscaling to 1680x1050 without the need for bilinear interpolation. Unfortunately, the Nvidia driver always seems to do bilinear scaling, again resulting in a blurry image. However, I seem to remember that I did obtain crisp images using this resolution in the past (before a Windows re-install). Maybe only some driver versions support integer upscaling without bilinear filtering? Or perhaps there are other solutions?

• Ping isn't acting accurate?

  I've been trying to diagnose some latency issues with my internet connection. I've been lagging out of online video games and such, which of course could be their server's fault. So, I've been running ping some. It doesn't indicate anything unusual, but it does act a bit strange. I can start it with something like ping internethost -i 0.1 so that it will send a ton of packets, and every 10-20 seconds it will appear to just freeze for 2 or 3 seconds. The packets are still being received in the right order though, and there is no packet loss. The weirdest thing is that after the little freeze up, it will usually just report a ping time that is about 10-30ms higher than the average. How does this happen? Is ping still being accurate? I'm using Arch Linux. The host I'm pinging is my website, which shouldn't be doing any kind of ping slowing or filtering.

• How to legitimately work around ISP rate limits

  A lot of ISP rate limit the amount of e-mails that is sent from a particular IP address. What is the proper way to get around that rate limit? Our company has an iPhone application that sends many e-mails because of our large user base and many e-mails go to different ISPs that rate limit the number of messages coming from a specific IP. We do not send spam and we are a legitimate business. However, is there a better way to resolve this limitation rather than just getting a ton of IP addresses? Ideally, I wouldn't want to rely on a third party service to send mail. However, if its the only possible solution, we would consider.
