    Possible Duplicate: Doing an rm -rf on a massive directory tree takes hours I'm running a simulation program on a computing cluster (Scientific Linux) that generates hundreds of thousands of atomic coordinate files. But I'm having a problem deleting the files because rm -rf never completes and neither does find . -name * | xargs r Isn't there a way to just unlink this directory from the directory tree? The storage unit is used by hundreds of other people, so reformatting is not an option. Thanks

  • How do C++ header files work?

    Hi all. When I include some function from a header file in a C++ program, does the entire header file code get copied to the final executable or only the machine code for the specific function is generated. For example, if I call std::sort from the <algorithm> header in C++, is the machine code generated only for the sort() function or for the entire <algorithm> header file. I think that a similar question exists somewhere on Stack Overflow, but I have tried my best to find it (I glanced over it once, but lost the link). If you can point me to that, it would be wonderful.

Running it without the stream_filter zips right through with a constant memory footprint of ~10 MB. What gives?

  • Problems with Vista loading a temporary user profile.

    I'm having a problem in Vista. My machine has four users, one for each of us in the house. Whenever a user logs in before me, they log out, and then I log in, Vista loads a temporary profile for me. However, if I restart and log in, I get into my profile no problem. Two errors are written to the event log (see below), and I've searched everywhere for solutions. 1: Windows was unable to load the registry. The problem is often caused by insuff. memory or insuff. security rights. DETAIL - The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process. for C:\users\joe\ntuser.dat I've got plenty of disk space and memory. 2:Windows cannot load the locally stored profile.   • UAC being turned off once a day on Windows 7

    I have strange problem on my HP laptop. This began to happen recently. Whenever I start my machine, Windows 7 Action Center displays the following warning: You need to restart your computer for UAC to be turned off. Actually, this does not happen if it happened once on a specific day. For example, when I start the machine in the morning, it shows up; but it never shows up in the subsequent restarts within that day. On the next day, the same thing happens again. I never disable UAC, but obviously some rootkit or virus causes this. As soon as I get this warning, I head for the UAC settings, and re-enable UAC to dismiss this warning. This is a bothersome situation as I can't fix it. First, I have run a full scan on the computer for any probable virus and malware/rootkit activity, but TrendMicro OfficeScan said that no viruses have been found. I went to an old Restore Point using Windows System Restore, but the problem was not solved. I have carefully examined all entries in the Event Viewer, but there's nothing wrong. Now I know that there is a hidden trojan (rootkit) on my machine which seems to disguise itself quite successfully. Note that I don't have the chance to remove the HDD, or reinstall the OS as this is a work machine subjected to certain IT policies on a company domain. Despite all my attempts, the problem still remains. I strictly need a to-the-point method or a pukka rootkit remover to remove whatever it is. I don't want to monkey with the system settings, i.e. disabling auto runs one by one, messing the registry, etc. EDIT 2: I have found an article which is closely related to my trouble: Malware can turn off UAC in Windows 7; “By design” says Microsoft.   • Windows 2012 RDS Temporary profile for Administrator

    I've configured a Windows 2012 RDS Farm with two virtual servers (VMWare - each one on a different ESX server). Both servers have Licensing, Web Access, Gateway, Connection Broker and Session Host roles. High Availability is set up and it works fine. Remote Apps are working and even Windows XP clients have access to the web interface. User profile path is \vmfiles1\UserProfileDisks\App\ and almost everyone has full right access to it. The problem I have is that I would like to be able to access both servers at the same time with the Administrator account (console), but each time I try, the second server that I logon to give me access with a temporary profile. I tried to enable/disable multiple sessions per user and forced Admin logoff with the GPO but nothing changed. Another thing is that the server pool is not saved, so each time I restart the RDS server or I logoff from it, I have to add a server in the server manager. Do you have any idea? Sorry if my english is not perfect.

  • Users are getting a temporary profile

    A bit about current setup: It is windows 2008 R2 AD servers (all of them are 2008R2) and couple locations which set as Sites. Each location has DFS on AD server. Roaming profiles are not used nor configured. Users have their home folder configured as mapped S: drive to DFS shared folder. For example: in profile tab user has: Home Folder - connect - S: to \\domain.com\dc\users\%username% We also have redirected Desktop, Documents and Downloads folders to \\domain.com\dc\users. Everything was fine. Suddenly (today), users in most locations lost their local profile (both XP and W7 desktops) and got temporary profiles. Also, it looks like local profile was created today (from folder properties). I checked events at couple machines and there is not errors related to profiles or logon process. I do not see issues in event logs at servers as well. Basically, I run out of ideas what is wrong and why machines lost their local profiles. PS: Laptop users do not have their folders redirected, but lost profiles as well.

  • Do your filesystems have un-owned files ?

    As part of our work for integrated compliance reporting in Solaris we plan to provide a check for determining if the system has "un-owned files", ie those which are owned by a uid that does not exist in our configured nameservice.  Tests such as this already exist in the Solaris CIS Benchmark (9.24 Find Un-owned Files and Directories) and other security benchmarks. The obvious method of doing this would be using find(1) with the -nouser flag.  However that requires we bring into memory the metadata for every single file and directory in every local file system we have mounted.  That is probaby not an acceptable thing to do on a production system that has a large amount of storage and it is potentially going to take a long time. Just as I went to bed last night an idea for a much faster way of listing file systems that have un-owned files came to me. I've now implemented it and I'm happy to report it works very well and peforms many orders of magnatude better than using find(1) ever will.   ZFS (since pool version 15) has per user space accounting and quotas.  We can report very quickly and without actually reading any files at all how much space any given user id is using on a ZFS filesystem.  Using that information we can implement a check to very quickly list which filesystems contain un-owned files. First a few caveats because the output data won't be exactly the same as what you get with find but it answers the same basic question.  This only works for ZFS and it will only tell you which filesystems have files owned by unknown users not the actual files.  If you really want to know what the files are (ie to give them an owner) you still have to run find(1).  However it has the huge advantage that it doesn't use find(1) so it won't be dragging the metadata for every single file and directory on the system into memory. It also has the advantage that it can check filesystems that are not mounted currently (which find(1) can't do). Also this machine acts as wireless access point through an interface say, eth0 with ip address 192.168.1.1 and acts as gateway for the connected devices through this network with subnet mask 255.255.255.0 Now is it possible to achieve the following: When any of the connected devices through wireless AP needs internet connection linux machine has to use ppp1 interface for internet. If any of the applications on the linux machine needs internet connection linux machine should use ppp0 interface for the internet. Can this be achieved by adding rules to chains in filter/nat tables? If the kernel routing table has a default rule to route the default traffic through interface ppp0, wil kernel completely ignore ppp1 for internet?     I have a Mac running OSX 10.9.2, and I just downloaded and installed a Win7 IE9 VM in VirtualBox. My Mac uses Wi-Fi for internet access, and it's behind a proxy (it's a work machine). VirtualBox loads the VM fine, and at some point the VM can see the DNS servers of the host. But I've never been able to make the VM have internet access. I've tried all kinds of combinations of Network settings on the VM via the VirtualBox Settings, in conjunction with Internet Sharing in OSX's System Preferences, but no luck. Has anyone done a similar setup and made the VM successfully connect to the Internet? Thanks in advance for any inputs. [ Update: I was able to get internet access for the VM when the host was using my home network. I wonder... How can a virus install itslef this way from nowhere ? Without any user action. You install Windows XP... the computer just connects itself to the internet (assuming Microsoft don't connect to bad sites on its first connection)... and you have a virus. There is something magic I don't understand here. Can someone explain me how that virus could attack Windows that way, without any user action on a fresh installed system...

    Is it possible to install Ubuntu on a machine with only a dial-up connection? That is, does the Ubuntu install CD come with everything needed to set up an Internet connection using a dial-up modem (I have a USRobotics Courier V.Everything connected to a RS232 port on a Lava Quattro-PCI). I presently run CentOS (5.9), which does include support for dialup Internet access out-of-the-box (all of the modules for dialup are on the distro DVD). When I ran the UBuntu CD (12.04.1 desktop), there was no sign of dial-up Internet support. Am I faced with a chicken or egg problem?

  • ApplicationPoolIdentity permissions on Temporary Asp.Net files

    Hi all, at work I am struggling a bit with the following situation: We have a web application that runs on a WIndows Server 2008 64 bits machine. The app's ApplicationPool is running under the ApplicationPoolIdentity and configured for .net 2 and Classic pipeline mode. This works fine up to the moment that XmlSerialization requires creation of Serializer assemblies where MEF is being used to create a collection of knowntypes. To remedy this I was hoping that granting the ApplicationPoolIdentity rights to the ASP.Net Temporary Files directory would be enough, but alas... What I did was the run the following command from a cmd prompt: icacls "c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework64\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files" /grant "IIS AppPool\MyAppPool":(M) Obviously this did not work, otherwise you would not be reading this :) Strange thing is that whenever I grant the Users or even more specific, the Authenticated Users Group those permissions, it works. What's weird as well (in my eyes) is that before I started granting access the ApplicationPoolIdentity was already a member of IIS_IUSRS which does have Modify rights for the temporary asp files directory. And now I'm left wondering why this situation requires Modify rights for the Authenticated Users group. I thought it could be because the apppool account was missing additional rights (googling for this returned some results, so I tried those), but granting the ApplicationPoolIdentity modification rights to the Windows\Temp directory and/or the application directory itself did not fix it. For now we have a workaround, but I hate that I don't know what is exactly going on here, so I was hoping any of you guys could shed some light on this. Thanx in advance!

  • How to temporary disable a mirror video driver in windows xp registry

    Because its a lot of text, I will ask first my question and then explain what the base problem is. Perhaps someone can give me a solution to the base problem: Is there is a way to temporary disable mirror video drivers (through registry or so), without uninstalling the corresponding software. I tested changing the enumeration in LocalMachine\Hardware\DeviceMap\Video but after reboot always the old configuration is restored. Explanation of the base problem We are working on a wpf-project for a department of a big company. There we have the problem that WPF renders only in software mode, although the hardware they have, must support hardware rendering (Tier 2). After searching for a solution to the problem, we found out that direct 3d does not work properly and we think thats why WPF can only use SW-rendering. In dxdiag.exe the direct3d-acceleration is enabled, but if we start the test-routine it always fails saying that it has not enough memory (it says memory, not video memory!). I have seen there 3 different types of pc’s (they have some hundreds of each type) and every type shows the exactly same behavior. We tried to update all the drivers, also dx (Version 9.0c) and we searched a lot in the web but could not find a solution. All the pcs have Intel Dual-Core processors or better, one type has an Intel gma 9000 graphics card the other two types have actual ATI and NVidia graphic-cards with 256MB onboard memory. Also the system memory is at least 2GB. Windows is XPSP3. The pc’s are of two different manufacturers. Because we see the exactly same behavior on every computer of this three very different computer-types, we don’t think that this is a driver or a direct x problem. What we’ve found in other newsgroups is, that direct x could be disturbed through mirror-video drivers such as NetMeeting, VNC and other remote desktop-installations. In the registry, we see under LocalMachine\Hardware\DeviceMap\Video a lot of such mirror-entries and we find also the definitions in the CurrentControlSet\Control\Video-Section (However this drivers are not shown in the hardware panel of the os). We can have admin-rights to one of these computers to test if disabling these drivers would help, but we must not change the configuration so that some software does not work after the tests. Therefore I cannot uninstall any software because I have not the mediums, licenses or knowhow to reinstall those apps. The support of this company however will only begin to work, if I can tell them what the real problem is. Thats why we search for a way to disable these mirror-drivers (or a hint to solve the dx problem if we are on a false trace)

    The file-name extension .webm is used for media files using the WebM multimedia format, which consists of the WebM container (a subset of the Matroska container) and audio and video streams with independet enconding and quality settings. Description of the issue: For files in the WebM format, the program file says that files are raw data, instead of determining and displaying the real file-format, which is WebM. Besides, Nautilus doesn't display the technical metadata of files in this format. Why is the file program not displaying the file format for WebM files?
