• How can I decide what to test manually, and what to trust to automated tests?

  We have a ton of developers and only a few QA folks. The developers have been getting more involved in qa throughout the development process by writing automated tests, but our QA practices are mostly manual. What I'd love is if our development practices were BDD and TDD and we grew a robust test suite. The question is: While building such a testing suite, how can we decide what we can trust to the tests, and what we should continue testing manually?

• Help needed for SOAPUI

  I am trying to test my webservice using SOAPUI (the free version). For testing concurrency, I wished to fire concurrent threads from SOAPUI onto the service. But with the options, the thred count increases gradually (even in the burst mode). The machine where SOAPUI is installed is a WinXP machine. Can I actually do the concurrency testing? If so how? • Mocking digest authentication in RestEasy

  I am using RestEasy to develop a REST server and using the mock dispatcher (org.jboss.resteasy.mockMockDispatcherFactory) for testing the service in my unit tests. My service requires digest authentication and I would to make that part of my testing. Each of my services accepts a @Context SecurityContext securityContext parameter. Is there any way is inject a fake SecurityContext in the dispatcher so that I can test that my security methods function properly?

  I am learning how to write test cases using Rspec. I have a simple Post Comments Scaffold where a Post can have many Comments. I am testing this using Rspec. How should i go about checking for Post :has_many :comments. Should I stub Post.comments method and then check this with by returning a mock object of array of comment objects?   I'm new to unit testing, and I'm learning how to use NUnit and Moq. NUnit provides Assert syntax for testing conditions in my unit tests, while Moq provides some Verify functions. To some extent these seem to provide the same functionality. How do I know when it's more appropriate to use Assert or Verify? Maybe Assert is better for confirming state, and Verify is better for confirming behavior (Classical versus Mockist)?

For whatever reason, I have found that when using JTA, you MUST specify a JNDI data source within persistence.xml as well. This is fine, unless you are trying to go integration testing outside a container and JNDI is not available. My questions are: a) is there anyway to inject a jdbc datasource into my JTA transaction manager? b) if not, how do a handle a JNDI lookup during integration testing?

• How to limit disk performance?

  I am load-testing a web application and studying the impact of some config tweaks (related to disk i/o) on the overall app performance, i.e. the amount of users that can be handled simultaneously. But the problem is that I hit 100% CPU before I can see any effect of the disk-related config settings. I am therefore wondering if there is a way I could deliberately limit the disk performance so that it becomes the bottleneck and the tweaks I am trying to play with actually start impacting performance. Should I just make the hard disk busy with something else? What would serve the best for this purpose? More details (probably irrelevant, but anyway): PHP/Magento/Apache, studying the impact of apc.stat. Setting it to 0 makes APC not checking PHP scripts for modification which should increase performance where disk is the bottleneck. Using JMeter for benchmarking.

• Solution to time shifting requirement in Active Directory

  Hi, I currently have an active directory that has several child domains (consisting of nothing other than a DC and bespoke application servers) set-up for testing our CRM software, as some of it is date/time sensitive these have been set to dates in the future at some point in the past, which is causing replication errors. I'm working on getting rid of these child domains, but still have a requirement for our testers to be able to time shift. Does anyone know of any solutions that would allow our test environments to have their time changed (always forward), without affecting the production active directory? Is it as simple as creating a separate Forest on the same LAN or would that interfere with my production Forest? Thanks for any advice.

  Obviously I'm talking about time in terms of the PC clock rather than real time. We were testing an application we've developed at work by setting the clock forward and back to simulate different scenarios and I started thinking how useful it would be if you could adjust the rate(?) of the system clock with finer control. So you could make a minute pass in a second or a day pass in 30 seconds and watch how the program you're developing copes with changes in date and time. I'd be interested to hear if anyone knows of any software or hardware which can let you do some or all of the above.

• Can we execute steps conditionally in a JMeter script?

  I have recorded a sequence of steps to be executed for testing my web application, in a JMeter .jmx script. (The recording tool used was BadBoy). It is possible that one of the steps might return an error response in the HTTP response content. In this case, I need the script to stop execution of that thread. However, since the error page is customized, JMeter does not recognize this as an error and proceeds to the next steps. Is there any way to check for certain keywords, for example, and decide if the response is an error?

• Kill program after it outputs a given line, from a shell script

  Background: I am writing a test script for a piece of computational biology software. The software I am testing can take days or even weeks to run, so it has a recover functionality built in, in the case of system crashes or power failures. I am trying to figure out how to test the recovery system. Specifically, I can't figure out a way to "crash" the program in a controlled manner. I was thinking of somehow timing a SIGKILL instruction to run after some amount of time. This is probably not ideal, as the test case isn't guaranteed to run the same speed every time (it runs in a shared environment), so comparing the logs to desired output would be difficult. This software DOES print a line for each section of analysis it completes. Question: I was wondering if there was a good/elegant way (in a shell script) to capture output from a program and then kill the program when a given line/# of lines is output by the program?

• macports apache,php,db, how do I test on another device?

  My supervisor suggests using macports to install/manage different versions of apache and php, as well as both mysql and posgres databases. The idea is that we need to test our platform on different versions of each. So far I've just been using the default apache installation on osx lion, and the default postgres installation. My question is this: once I turn Web Sharing off, and proceed with a custom apache2 setup based in /opt/local/, how do I broadcast my machine's IP to other devices, for testing? With Web Sharing, I can get my machine's IP and use that to test with an iPad and iPhone. Will that still be the case, and if so, how do I do it?

• How can I access a shared Exchange mailbox with IMAP (over telnet)?

  I have an Mailbox which multiple users have access to, it works fine for me and I can add it in Outlook as an additional mailbox to my account and list all its content. I can access my personal mailbox using IMAP, I'm testing it by just telneting in and LIST'ing it. The problem is that another user trying to access it is having problems accessing it through IMAP; and I want to test if I can access the shared mailbox with my account - how can I do that in terms of IMAP commands? What I am doing now is: telnet mail.server 01 LOGIN user pass 02 LIST "" * 03 LOGOUT Edit: If there is another way to test this, that is an equally good answer.
