  hi, I've been using a external 21.5' monitor for my laptop of 12.1' monitor, and moved my top panel to the right and add a new panel to the bottom edge of the screen. A screenshot of the right part of my desktop is here: http://i.imgur.com/kOHwT.png As you see, The window of the calender is out of the screen. The alt+left mouse button did not work. How do you move the calender window? update: I managed to come up with a solution to get the window or panel of cal in the screen. Just remove the panel of clock and re-add it. But unfortunately, the preferences are lost. You have to reset the preferences, such as locations... but after re-adding 2 locations, the window of cal panel was just shown as the same of the previous screenshot before.

• how to get the update manager window visible?

  I can see from the launcher that the Update Manager is running - it has the little triangle by it. However, I am having trouble seeing the window. If I click on it from one desktop, it switches to another, so I assume that the Update Manager has its window on that other desktop, but it still doesn't show anything. If I click alt-tab to switch between apps, I can see that the Update Manager is there, but selecting it just shows me a blank screen. Also, when I select it, while still holding the alt-key, I see the top menu bar switch to 'Update Manager', but when I release alt, it changes back to Ubuntu Desktop. It's almost like the app is off the screen somewhere, perhaps with just a single pixel showing or something like that. disclaimer: One thing that might be affecting things is that I have 'focus follows mouse' configured, which makes things a bit funky with the menu not being on the window, where it should be (perhaps there's a way to put it back with the window?) - I like to be able to type into background windows, and manually control which window is in the foreground.

  I am trying to create a GtkWindow that would be on top of all the windows. This includes Unity's Launcher and Panel. I am working on Kazam screen recorder and one of the options of the program is recording an arbitrary area of the screen. For this, I open a GtkWindow and let user resize it and move it around the screen to the desired location. The problem is when user wants to resize the window over the Panel (or Launcher). It can't be done. It seems that window manager is preventing this. I can move the window under panel and launcher if I ALT-drag it, but the problem because area selection window stays below Launcher and Panel. Any ideas are more than welcome.

I got the suggestion to use info.window after initializing SDL and filling the info variable with data by calling SDL_GetWindowWMInfo(); included in the header file SDL_syswm.h. My compiler (visual studio 2008 professional edition) gives the following error: 226) : error C2039: 'window' : is not a member of 'SDL_SysWMinfo' 1 include\sdl_syswm.h(173) : see declaration of 'SDL_SysWMinfo' Any help appreciated.   In my website I have this javascript code, adding a vertical offset when in the url a specific section of the page is specified (#): if (!!window.location.hash) window.scrollBy(0,-60); However this only works in Firefox... I'm pretty sure window.location.hash works in all browsers, that is, the symbol "sharp" is correctly detected in the url.   How can I screen-capture an inactive (minimized / on another workspace) window in Ubuntu? Applications like ImageMagick's import are only able to capture active windows. When attempting to capture an inactive window, I get the following message: unable to read X window image `<id>': Resource temporarily unavailable @ error/xwindow.c/XImportImage/5023. Might be able to do this using Compiz, as it is able to render previews of inactive windows. Furthermore, in my specific case, the window I want to capture is run in a Wine Explorer-container. Inside that container the application is always active.

• Why is my browser using so much memory?

  Hi. I've recently had problems with Firefox running very slowly when I have many tabs open; say 20 tabs. My whole system would slow down. I decided to give Google Chrome a try, and it started out fine. But lately I am finding that it too, slows down my whole system. Looking at Task Manager, chrome.exe is using about 250MB of memory in about 6 different entries in task manager. However, when I shut Chrome down, memory usage is reduced by about 600MB. How can this be? (shows drop in memory usage after ending Chrome.) When my system locks up with Chrome having many tabs open, it takes 10 seconds to load the Start Menu, 10 seconds to expand All Programs, and each folder and subfolder, and 30 seconds for the program to be highlighted under my mouse. It also takes 10 seconds to switch to Notepad. Why is Chrome appearing to use so much more memory than Task Manager indicates? Why is my pagefile being used when I have around 1.1GB of memory? Can I set Chrome to run in RAM and not in the pagefile? How can 20 tabs use 600MB? That's 30MB per tab. Thanks for your help.

  This is not a new item at all but I came across it recently. For an app I had been using some JavaScript like: javascript:window.open(someurl.aspx here) to open a new window via a button. That bit of code had been working great in several other apps. Then in one app that same code decided to open the new window correctly while clearing the parent of everything but [object]. The fix ended up being simple, change the javascript to: javascript:void(window.open(someurl.aspx here); Then it worked like I thought it should. Tags: ASP.Net, JavaScript

• Recover deleted folder form bookmarks bar?

  I googled for this, but didn't find an answer. I removed a folder in Google Chrome's Bookmarks bar. Chrome says nothing when doing this, and I assumed it wouldn't actually delete the data from the Bookmarks manager, just the folder in the Bookmarks bar. Turns out I was wrong, and now I lost hundred's of URLs. I closed and restarted Chrome since then, so data is apparently no longer on disk. Since Google Sync is on by default, it says I have "536 bookmarks", I installed Chrome on another computer, logged on to Google... but the folder is still gone. I can't believe Chrome doesn't prompt the user with an obvious message for something that important. Is there somehow a way to recover a folder removed from the Bookmarks bar? Thank you. Edit: Amazingly, Chrome doesn't 1) provide a way to remove an item from the Bookmarks bar without also deleting it from the Bookmarks list, and 2) doesn't even warn the user of the consequences when doing so! The only way to recover data is: if you haven't closed the browser yet, make a backup of the Bookmarks file, close the browser, replace the now-leaner Bookmarks file with the previous version, and restart Chrome if you have closed it, recover the file from your backup. You did backup that file, right? ;-)

I would like to be able to enter a file name in the address bar and to see Google search results for that file name similar to what I would see if I searched for the file name using something like https://www.google.com/#q=/path/to/interesting/file I am able to disable the file scheme using either of the following policy settings: "DisabledSchemes": ["file"], Which has been deprecated in favor of: "URLBlacklist": ["file://"], But in either case Google Chrome / Chromium continues to auto-detect that a file name was entered, automatically prepends the file scheme to the file name, and then reports that the webpage is blocked.

  I am looking for an equivalent in Chrome to the "break on all errors" functionality of Firebug. In the Scripts tab, Chrome has a "pause on all exceptions", but this is not quite the same as breaking on all errors. For instance, when loading a page with the following code, I would like Chrome to break on the line foo.bar = 42.   I would like to have a button on a web page with the following behavior: On the first click, open a pop-up. On later clicks, if the pop-up is still open, just bring it to the front. If not, re-open. The below code works in Firefox (Mac & Windows), Safari (Mac & Windows), and IE8. (I have not yet tested IE6 or IE7.) However, in Google Chrome (both Mac & Windows) later clicks fail to bring the existing pop-up to the front as desired. • Fixing Chrome&rsquo;s AJAX Request Caching Bug

  I recently had to make a set of web pages restore their state when the user arrived on them after clicking the browser’s back button. The pages in question had various content loaded in response to user actions, which meant I had to manually get them back into a valid state after the page loaded. I got hold of the page’s data in a JavaScript ViewModel using a JQuery ajax call, then iterated over the properties, filling in the fields as I went. I built in the ability to describe dependencies between inputs to make sure fields were filled in in the correct order and at the correct time, and that all worked nicely. To make sure the browser didn’t cache the AJAX call results I used the JQuery’s cache: false option, and ASP.NET MVC’s OutputCache attribute for good measure. That all worked perfectly… except in Chrome. Chrome insisted on retrieving the data from its cache. cache: false adds a random query string parameter to make the browser think it’s a unique request – it made no difference. I made the AJAX call a POST – it made no difference. Eventually what I had to do was add a random token to the URL (not the query string) and use MVC routing to deliver the request to the correct action. The project had a single Controller for all AJAX requests, so this route: routes.MapRoute( name: "NonCachedAjaxActions", url: "AjaxCalls/{cacheDisablingToken}/{action}", defaults: new { controller = "AjaxCalls" }, constraints: new { cacheDisablingToken = "[0-9]+" }); …and this amendment to the ajax call: function loadPageData(url) { // Insert a timestamp before the URL's action segment: var indexOfFinalUrlSeparator = url.lastIndexOf("/"); var uniqueUrl = url.substring(0, indexOfFinalUrlSeparator) + new Date().getTime() + "/" + url.substring(indexOfFinalUrlSeparator); // Call the now-unique action URL: $.ajax(uniqueUrl, { cache: false, success: completePageDataLoad }); } …did the trick.

  Some time ago my colleague David Konecny discussed the question "What works better for you? NetBeans IDE or Chrome Developer Tools?". It's a good read. David highlights the point that it's not a question of either/or but both, since the two tools are like the apple/pear dichotmoy. However, good news! The two worlds are not divided in NetBeans IDE 7.4. Changes you make in Chrome Developer Tools (CDT) are automatically persisted to the related files in NetBeans IDE, as you can see in a new YouTube clip I made today.   Google has an Easter egg that draws 3D graph but when I tried it out on chrome it complained about no WebGL support. I've also tested it on Firefox whose WebGL support was enabled but ended up with the same problem. Thus, I suspect it's an issue of my GPU. Some googling led me to chrome://gpu and here's what I got Graphics Feature Status Canvas: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable HTML Rendering: Software only, hardware acceleration unavailable 3D CSS: Unavailable. • Enable Multi-Column Google Searches with a User Script

  Are you wanting to improve the search results view at Google and make better use of the webpage space? With a little user script magic you can make those search results look and fit better in your favorite browser. Note: This user script may conflict with the AutoPager extension if you have it installed in your favorite browser. Before Here is the standard single column view of search results at Google. Not too bad but the available space could certainly be better utilized. Note: For the purposes of our example we are using Google Chrome but this user script can be easily added to other browsers. After If you have never installed a user script in Chrome before it is just as simple as the regular extensions at the official Google website. Here you can see the details for the user script we are installing. Notice that you can view the source code if desired. To add the user script to Chrome click on “Install”. Once you start the install process you will see an intermediary message asking if you wish to continue in the lower left corner of your browser. Click “Continue” to move to the next step in the install process. From this point on the install process is practically identical to the official extensions. You can see the final confirmation window here…click “Install” to finish adding the user script to Chrome. As with regular extensions you will see a post-install message in the upper right corner. So, what does a user script look like in the “Extensions Page”? You can see the user script entry here…outside of an icon it looks rather identical to a normal extension. After refreshing the search page shown above we now have two columns of search results (default setting). This looks much much better than a single column view and there is little to no page scrolling required now. To switch to a three column view simply use the keyboard shortcut “Alt + 3”. To return to a single column view use “Alt + 1” and for the default two column view use “Alt + 2”. Three keyboard shortcuts for three different views…definitely a good thing. Note: On our test system we needed to use the number keys at the top of our keyboard to switch views…this is most likely the result of unique settings on our test system. Conclusion If you are wanting a better viewing experience when conducting searches at Google then this user script will make a very nice addition to your favorite browser.
