  • Windows Live Writer fails to start

    I installed windows live writer and configured it to connect to my xmlrpc enabled blog engine. After doing so, it threw an unrecoverable error and closed down. After attempting to restart windows live writer, it throws the following exception each time: Description: Windows Live Writer has encountered a problem: Invalid URI: The hostname could not be parsed. Problem signature: Problem Event Name: WindowsLiveWriter Problem Signature 01: CreateThis Problem Signature 02: 115 Problem Signature 03: System.UriFormatException Problem Signature 04: 15.4.3555.308 Problem Signature 05: 2.0.50727.5456 Problem Signature 06: Windows Live Writer OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.1 Locale ID: 1033 Since I was unable to start windows live writer at all, I tried uninstalling it and removing all files associated with it in my "C:/users/[username]/appdata" folder. After that, I re-installed it and still get the error every time I try to launch the application. Does anyone know how I can get around this?

    I'm looking to setup a quick and dirty network boot server to install xp on a beatup laptop that has a bad cdrom but the option to "network boot" (compaq pasario 700) 1) what is the diffrence between pxe and Ris 2) which one is most likely to be the one used on the laptop mentioned above 3) is there a windows program to run a boot server 4) what files will i need to have can i jut use the cd or do i need to rip it to files or and iso? thanks Rob

  • windows phone application repeatedly opens while phone is plugged in

    I plugged my windows phone 8 phone into my Windows 8.1 computer for the first time. It asked what to do when a WP8 phone is plugged in. I chose "Open Windows Phone". All worked fine for about an hour. Now when I connect my phone, the Windows Phone application repeatedly opens. I can't even type in another window, as it continues to steal focus to "switch to" the Windows Phone application. Anyone have any ideas to fix this?

For example, right now I am listening to some music on fairly loudly and I would like all of the alerts I am getting from other apps (email, twitter updates, IMs) to be reduced.

  • Upgrading from Windows 8 RTM to Release, if there is a difference

    So I'm kinda stuck in a hard place. I'm wanting to finally re-install Windows and looking at whether I should stick to tried and true Windows 7 or go with the funky and experimental Windows 8. As such I've virtualised Windows 8 RTM, looked at its features and GUI and I'm quite impressed, personally. So I'm willing to upgrade to it. However Windows 8's release is just under 50 days away according to Wikipedia and I'm impatient, so if I go to RTM and like it enough to continue using it, will I be able to go to "release" version and receive updates for it as normal or would I have to reinstall again?

However, when I'm trying to customize the past items, I see that there are nearly 100 different items, the majority of them are programs which have been uninstalled ages ago. How can I eliminate all the past items that are not installed on my computer and keep the ones that are installed on my computer?   • Can not set Windows XP Keyboard configuration

    A friend of mine came to me with a french Windows XP where windows had decided that keyboard would now be english-US keyboard instead of french keyboard. After a few attempts, I came to the strange conclusion that it's impossible to change it. Whatever keyboard configuration I apply, the language dialog does not complain but sticks to the english-us keyboard. I tried : setting two keyboards, with FR as default setting two keyboards, with EN-US as default one keyboard as FR It's like it was impossible to apply a new keyboard configuration. Any idea what could be wrong ?

    I really like the integrated Virtual Machine that Windows had built-in with Windows 7 with Windows Virtual PC. I'm looking to install that again. I'd like to be able to install multiple machines as I did before (XP, Ubuntu, Etc,.) but I can't seem to find Windows Virtual PC for Windows 8 any more. Is it still available?, and if not was there something setup in place to replace it? How do I use it?   • Desktop icons and taskbar not shown in Windows XP

    Hi, I am not able see any desktop icons, taskbar in my Windows XP system. Also none of the keyboard shortcuts like Win Key + R, Win Key + E are not working. Yesterday I installed AVG 9.0 in my machine and was working fine. But today when I started the system an svchost error occured saying "the memory at location could not be written".   • Cannot access client pc remotely due to time/date issue xp win2k3 environment -- REMOTE solution please

    When I run psexec to the user desktop (xp pro) I get "There is a time and/or date difference between the client and the server." I also get "access denied" when I run the at \clientname time /interactive "net time \server /set /y" command. I cannot access the machine from my win2k3 server's AD Users and Computers utilities. Is going to the machine the only way to remedy? Clarify: Going to the machine and doing the net time command works, but I want a remote solution please.

  • How to get a service to listen on port 80 on Windows Server 2003

    I've coded a custom windows service that listens on TCP port 80 but when I try to install it on a Windows Server 2003 machine it fails to start because some other service is already listening on that port. So far I've disabled the IIS Admin service and the HTTP SSL service but no luck. When I run netstat -a -n -o | findstr 0.0:80 it gives me the process id 4 as the culprit, but when I look at the running processes that process id points to the "System" process. What can I do to get the System process to stop listening on port 80 and get my service to listen instead? P.S. I should point out that the service runs fine if I install it on my Windows XP or Windows 7 development boxes. Also, I should specify that this has nothing to do with it being a service. I've tried starting a regular application that attempts to bind to port 80 on the Windows Server 2003 with the same outcome - it fails because another application is already bound to that port.

    I recently copied my win xp install from one hard to another(via ubuntu live cd) Everything went well, except that all the hidden system files(boot.ini, ntdlr, io.sys) are no longer hidden. I tried this: attrib +s c:/IO.sys No effect. The files are still visible even though the setting to hide system files is checked. Any solutions? Thanks.

  • Selecting primary Internet connection in Windows XP

    There is a computer that has access to the Internet both via the local network and by a GSM modem. As far as I know, when both connections are active, the modem connection is the primary one and all data is transmitted by the modem. Because of the fact that the slow modem connection is supposed to be used as a backup connection, I want Windows to use it only when the connection via LAN is unavailable. At the same time I want the GSM modem connection to be active constantly. Is it possible to make Windows not use modem connection when there is a working LAN Internet connection?   • Encoding video stream for playback on a vanilla Windows XP with mencoder

    I have a bunch of PNG files, generated from a script. They represent consecutive frames of a video sequence and I'd like to encode them into a single AVI file (or some other video format) using mencoder. What parameters should I use to ensure that the video can be viewed on a vanilla Windows XP using Windows Media Player with no extra codecs installed apart from the default ones? So far I've tried -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=wmv2 and -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=msmpeg4 with no success. (Background story: some of the people I'm collaborating with on a scientific project cannot install any codecs on their university computers without the help of the local sysadmins, who are of course not very willing to install anything. I'd like to ensure that they can also view the video files I am creating).

    I have Windows XP Pro on a IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad T60 and occaisionally the UI is jumpy. This is all facets of the UI, including mouse cursor, video, and audio. I can't define when this starts, but logging off or restarting the computer fixes the problem.
