• Short Look at Frends Helium 2.0 Beta

  Pekka from Frends gave me the opportunity to have a look at the beta-version of their Helium 2.0. For all of you, who don't know the tool: Helium is a web-application that collects management-data from BizTalk which you usually have to tediously collect yourself, like performance-data (throttling, throughput (like completed Orchestrations/hour), other perfomance-counters) and data about the state of BTS-Applications and presents the data in clearly structured diagrams and overviews which (often) even allow drill-down.  Installing Helium 2 was quite easy. It comes as an msi-file which creates the web-application on IIS. Aditionally a windows-service is deployt which acts as an agent for sending alert-e-mails and collecting data. What I missed during installation was a link to the created web-app at the end, but the link can be found under Program Files/Frends... On the start-page Helium shows two sections: An overview about the BTS-Apps (Running?, suspended messages?) Basic perfomance-data You can drill-down into the BTS-Apps further, to see ReceiveLocations, Orchestrations and SendPorts. And then a very nice feature can be activated: You can set a monitor to each of the ports and/or orchestrations and have an e-mail sent when a threshold of executions/day or hour is not met. I think this is a great idea. The following screeshot shows the configuration of this option. Conclusion: Helium is a useful monitoring  tool for BTS-operations that might save a lot of time for collecting data, writing a tool yourself or documentation for the operations-staff where to find the data. Pros: Simple installation Most important data for BTS-operations in one place Monitor for alerts, if throughput is not met Nice Web-UI Reasonable price Cons: Additional Perormance-counters cannot be added Im am not sure when the final version is to be shipped, but you can see that on Frend's homepage soon, I guess... A trial version is available here

• I have 5 days of vouchers for MS training… help me choose? [closed]

  I'm a Microsoft centric guy (systems engineering side) and I already know the syntax of VB, have done VBScript pretty extensively and Excel VBA stuff as well. I want to make the leap into proper programming, probably with C# because it teaches me syntax I can use for Java if I want to go that route at some point. Since I have vouchers for 5 days of programming, and I can understand logic and understand how the .NET framework works... I would love to hear ideas on which MS Courses I should take. My primary focus is to work on web applications with web services that interact and do neat stuff... like for example, to create a 'chat' room or something interactive on the web. Or should I do something with HTML5/JS? I am really not sure... like I said, I want to work to make web services/sites. Not making the next Facebook mind you, but I'd like to work towards something in that spectrum on a much smaller scale. Please give me any advice, I'd like to book these classes asap Obviously getting involved with SQL and things that I will require would be important here.. you guys know better than me! Thanks!

  In this post I will be looking into a new feature that has been added to theVS 2012 IDE. I am talking about Page Inspector that gives developers a very good/handy way to identify layout issues and to find out which part of server side code is responsible for that HTML snippet of code.If you are interested in reading other posts about VS 2012 and .Net 4.5 please have a look here and here.This tool is integrated into the VS 2012 IDE.We can launch it in different ways. 1) We will create a new ASP.Net MVC application (an Internet application). I will not add any code.2) In the Solution Explorer I choose my project and right-click. From the available options select View in Page InspectorHave a look at the picture below.  3) We can launch Page Inspector from the Standard Toolbar. Please have a look at the picture below.   4) Let's view our application with Page Inspector. First I inspect the About link-menu.I can see very quickly the HTML that is rendering for that link to appear. I also see the server side code (the actual view, _Layout.cshtml) that is responsible for that link. This is something developers always craved for. We can also see the CSS styles that are used to style this link (About).Have a look at the picture below Obviously there are similar tools that I have been using in the past when I wanted to change a part of the HTML or see what piece of CSS code affects my layout. I used Firebug when viewing my web applications in the Firefox browser. Internet Explorer and Chrome have also great similar tools that help web developers to identify issues with a site's appearance/issues.Please bear in mind that Page Inspector works with all forms of the ASP.Net stack e.g Web Forms,Web Pages.Hope it helps!!!!!

  Thank you everyone who came to my talk last night on Building Single Page Apps on the Microsoft Stack. I’ve attached the slides and code samples below. Here’s a quick summary of the talk. I argued that Single Page Apps are better than traditional Server Side Apps because: Single Page Apps are Stateful – In a traditional server-side app, whenever you navigate to a new page, all of your previous state is lost. It is like rebooting your computer whenever you perform any action In a Single Page App, Your Presentation Layer is Not Miles Away – In a traditional server-side app, because everything happens on the server, your presentation layer is separated from the user by space and time. In a Single Page App, the presentation layer is in the browser and not the server (which is the right place for a presentation layer). A Single Page App Respects the Web – It is easier to take advantage of HTML5 and related standards when building a Single Page App. Next, I recommended using the following four technologies when building a web application: Knockout – This is how you create your presentation layer. ASP.NET Web API – This is how you expose JSON data from your web server and perform server-side validation. HTML5 – This is how you implement client-side validation. Sammy – This is how you implement client-side routing and create a Single Page App with multiple virtual pages.   I have done some reading on what URLS should look like for search engine optimisation, but I am curious to know how mine would like, I need some advice. I have a tutorial website, and my categories is something like: Web Development -> Client Side -> JavaScript So if I have a tutorial called "What is JavaScript?", is it good to have a URL that looks something like: www.MyWebsite.com/web-development/client-side/javascript/what-is-javascipt Or would something like this be more appropriate: www.MyWebsite.com/tutorials/what-is-javascipt Just curious because I also read that it is wise to have keywords in your URLs. Do I need to add the identifiers of each categories in the link as well, something like: www.MyWebsite.com/1/web-development/5/client-side/15/javascript/100/what-is-javascipt 1 is the unique identifier (primary key) of category web development 5 is the unique identifier (primary key) of category client side 15 is the unique identifier (primary key) of category javascript 100 is the unique identifier (primary key) of tutorial what is javascript UPDATE This is not a programming question so can someone please help migrate this to the correct Q&A site without devoting my questions?

• Make Your Menu Item Highlighted

  When I was working on the TalentOn project (Promotion in MSDN Chinese) I was asked to implement a functionality that makes the top menu items highlighted when the currently viewing page was in that section. This might be a common scenario in the web application development I think.   Simple Example When thinking about the solution of the highlighted menu items the biggest problem would be how to define the sections (menu item) and the pages it belongs to rather than making the menu highlighted. With the ASP.NET MVC framework we can use the controller – action infrastructure for us to achieve it. Each controllers would have a related menu item on the master page normally. The menu item would be highlighted if any of the views under this controller are being shown. Some specific menu items would be highlighted of that action was invoked, for example the home page, the about page, etc. The check rule can be specified on-demand. For example I can define the action LogOn and Register of Account controller should make the Account menu item highlighted while the ChangePassword should make the Profile menu item highlighted. I’m going to use the HtmlHelper to render the highlight-able menu item. The key point is that I need to pass the predication to check whether the current view belongs to this menu item which means this menu item should be highlighted or not. Hence I need a delegate as its parameter. The third group, which contains one parameter, would be a predicate that tells me whether this menu item should be highlighted or not based on the user’s definition. And then I changed my master page of the sample MVC application. I let the Home and About menu highlighted only when the Index and About action are invoked. And I added a new menu named Account which should be highlighted for all actions/views under its Account controller. So let’s see the result. When the home page was shown the Home menu was highlighted since at this moment it was controller = Home and action = Index. And if I clicked the About menu you can see it turned highlighted as now the action was About. And if I navigated to the register page the Account menu was highlighted since it should be like that when any actions under the Account controller was invoked.   Fluently Language Till now it’s a fully example for the highlight menu item but not perfect yet. Since the most common scenario would be: highlighted when the action invoked, or highlighted when any action was invoked under this controller, we can created 2 shortcut method so for them so that normally the developer will be no need to specify the delegation. Another place we can improve would be, to make the method more user-friendly, or I should say developer-friendly. As you can see when we want to add a highlight menu item we need to specify 8 parameters and we need to remember what they mean. In fact we can make the method more “fluently” so that the developer can have the hints when using it by the Visual Studio IntelliSense. This is something we call “Fluently Language”. If you had been using Moq you will see that’s very development-friendly, document-ly and easy to read.   Summary In this post I demonstrated how to implement a highlight menu item in ASP.NET MVC by using its controller – action infrastructure. We can see the ASP.NET MVC helps us to organize our web application better.   With all of the hype about service oriented architecture (SOA) primarily through the use of web services, not much has been said about potential issues of using SOA in the design of an application. I am personally a fan of SOA, but it is not the solution for every application. Proper evaluation should be done on all requirements and use cases prior to deciding to go down the SOA road. It is important to consider how your application/service will handle the following perils as it executes. Example Challenges of SOA Network Connectivity Issues Handling Connectivity Issues Longer Processing/Transaction Times How many of us have had issues visiting our favorite web sites from time to time? The same issue will occur when using service based architecture especially if it is implemented using web services. Forcing applications to access services via a network connection introduces a lot of new failure points to the application. Potential failure points include: DNS issues, network hardware issues, remote server issues, and the lack of physical network connections. When network connectivity issues do occur, how are the service clients are implemented is very important. Should the client wait and poll the service until it is accessible again? If so what is the maximum wait time or number of attempts it should retry. Due to the fact of services being distributed across a network automatically increase the responsiveness of client applications due to the fact that processing time must now also include time to send and receive messages from called services. This could add nanoseconds to minutes per each request based on network load and server usage of the service provider. • Which one is better offline method for large scale application

  We've a big data management website used by several property. Some of our customers have downtime (they can't access net for an hour or two). We want our site to support offline data viewing and inventory management (typical data search and add/remove) and when the user goes online we can sync the changes back to our central database. Customers use several platforms like Windows, iOS, etc. We've been looking into several different options, here are the major choices - Develop offline web app supported in HTML5. Develop a 'fallback' mechanism and interact with data from the app cache as explained in here (http://www.htmlgoodies.com/html5/tutorials/introduction-to-offline-web- applications-using-) Develop a desktop based cross platform solution. I remember the old MONO which has been popular. Here's a post (What do you suggest for cross platform apps, including web cross-platform-apps-including-web) and another one (Technology choice for cross platform development (desktop and phone)? platform-development-desktop-and-phone?rq=1) I realize the the desktop solution might be hard to maintain and result in some compatibility issues and demand test environments. Can HTML5 handle moderate to high level complexity and data flow? Or would it be better to rely on a desktop based app for better scalability & performance?

• Membership Provider Parte 1

  Asp.net ha sido una de las tecnologías creadas por Microsoft de mas rápido crecimiento por la facilidad para los desarrolladores de crear sitios web. Una de las partes de mayor importancia que tiene asp.net es el contar con el Membership Provider o proveedor de Membrecía, que permite la creación, manejo y mantenimiento de un sistema completo de control y autenticación de usuarios. Para dar inicio a la serie de post que escribiré sobre que es Membeship y cuáles son las funcionalidades principales daremos unas definiciones. Tal como se menciono anteriormente con el membership provider podemos crear un sistema de control de usuarios completos, entre las funcionalidades principales podemos encontrar: * Creación de usuarios * Almacenamiento de información en base de datos * Autenticación, bloqueos y seguimiento Otras de las ventajas que cabe resaltar, es que, algunos de los controles de asp.net ya traen "naturalmente" en sus funciones la implementación del membership provider, tal como el control "Login" o los controles de estado de usuario, lo cual nos permite que con solo arrastrarlos al diseñador estén funcionando. Membership provider es poderoso, pero su funcionalidad y seguridad se ven aumentadas cuando se integra con otros proveedores de asp.net como lo son RoleProvider y Profile Provider (estos los discutiremos en otros post). En la siguiente figura, podemos ver como se distribuyen algunoS provider creados por Microsoft Antes de iniciar con la implementación de membership debes conocer cosas básicas como el espacio de nombres al que pertenece, el cual es: System.Web.Security que se encuentra dentro del ensamblado System.Web. Algo que debe tomarse en cuenta, es que, para poder utilizar cualquiera de los miembros de la clase, debemos hacer la referencia respectiva. Por defecto, el membership provider está diseñado para trabajar directamente con SQL Server, de ahí que su nombre completo seria SQL Membership Provider. Sin embargo, debido a su gran flexibilidad podemos extenderlo a cualquier base de datos o bien modificarlo para adapatarlo a nuestras necesidades. En los siguientes posts, discutiremos como crear un proveedor personalizado utilizando Entity Framework, separando las capas de acceso y datos y cuáles son las principales funciones que podemos aplicar. • HTTP Protocal

  I have worked with the HTTP protocal for about ten years now and I have found it to be incredibly usefull for transfering data espicaly for remote systems and regardless of the network enviroment. Prior to the existance of web services, developers use to use HTTP to screen scrap data off of web pages in order to interact with remote systems, and then process the data as they needed. I use to use the HTTPWebRequest and HTTPWebRespones classes in order to screen scrap data from various sites that had information I needed to use if no web service was avalible. This allowed me to call just about any webpage and grab all of the content on the page. Below is piece of a web spider that I build about 5-7 years ago. • EPM Architecture: Reporting and Analysis

  Reporting and Analysis is the basis for all Oracle EPM reporting components. Through the Java based Reporting and Analysis web application deployed on WebLogic, it enables users to browse through reports for all kind of Oracle EPM reporting components. Typical users access the web application by browser through Oracle HTTP Server (OHS). Reporting and Analysis Web application talks to the Reporting and Analysis Agent using CORBA protocol on various ports. All communication to the repository databases (EPM System Registry and Reporting and Analysis database) from web and application layer is done using JDBC. As an additional data store, the Reporting and Analysis Agent uses the file system to lay down individual reports. While the reporting artifacts are stored on the file system, the folder structure and report based security information is stored in the relational database. The file system can be either local or remote (e.g. network share, network file system). If an external user directory is used, Reporting and Analysis services also communicate to this directory.
