• Activate Your Monitor via Motion Trigger

  Most people are in the habit of jiggling their mouse or tapping their keyboard when they want to wake their monitor. This clever electronics hack adds a sensor to your computer for motion-based monitor activation. At the DIY and electronics blog Radio Etcetera they tackled an interesting project and shared the build guide. Their local volunteer fire department needed a monitor on for quick information checks but they didn’t need it on all the time and they didn’t want to have to walk over and activate the monitor when they needed it. The solution involved hacking a simple infrared security sensor and wiring it via USB to send a mouse command when motion is detected in the room. Fire fighter walks in, monitor turns on and displays information; fire fighter leaves and the monitor goes back to sleep. • Python or Ruby in 2011.

  What I'm really asking is, in the current services and technologies provided, which is a more "useful" language? Which one has more opportunity? Some background info first. I'm a .net C# dev for 5 years. Having done a few projects on Amazon AWS, I'm looking to start a few projects of my own. But Azure's too expensive, and AWS has too much management overhead. My current choice is Google App Engine and Python. Logical enough. But what I want to ask here is this: In Linux world, which is more useful? Recently heard about Heroku for Ruby. How viable is this? Looking at the pricing model indicates that it's more expensive. Which one has more up-to-date and exciting open source projects? For instance Trac is just plain out dated compared to Redmine. One of the big reason pulling me for Ruby is Redmine. Implementations? IronPython/IronRuby/JRuby etc etc. Which one is more standardised and more implementation agnostic? Which one is easier to port between Windows/Linux? Anyway, your input and thoughts are greatly appreciated. thanks.

• Getting .deb package dependencies for an offline Ubuntu computer through Windows

  Basically I want to "batch" download a .deb file and all its dependencies at once on a Windows 7 machine (of which I do not have admin access, it is a public computer.) I've seen plenty of Ubuntu based fixes that require terminal and apt, I'm asking how to do this on Windows. (I am not sure if this question fits here but I haven't found anywhere else that it could go.) I've tried Keryx and Sushi-huh to try to get packages and their dependencies but these both require Python, Python can't be normally installed without admin permission. (Side note, I think I've seen programs bundle python so they can work without installing it to c:, is this possible as a workaround? Google isn't helping) If anyone wants to know I'm trying to download Krita and Blender for Ubuntu 12.10/AMD64 I have been able to manually download single .deb files and dependencies upwards to 38 dependent packages, but then those 38 packages depend on other packages, It's maddening to not have some way to automatically do this on Windows. *Edit Sorry I forgot to make it clear that my personal home computer is running Ubuntu 12.10 and the public computer I'm using to download is Windows 7

• Audigy 2 Coaxial to Coaxial/Optical connection possible?

  Hello, The original question is deleted, and asked again below with accurate information. Edit: Excuse me for my ignorance, my friend has a Logitech Z-5500 set. I thought after comparing those systems on Google images that he had the Z-680, but he hasn't. This set has a single Digital coaxial for DVD or CD players or PC sound cards (requires coaxial cable, sold separately) cable. This single cable was connected to the orange tulip connector (SPDIF coaxial out) on the backside of his onboard HP Elite m9070, this connector is broken. How can I use the digital out with a single cable coaxial cable on the Audigy2 (see image below) (I have the following converters for my disposal, can I use one of these? 3.5 mm male - coax optical mini optical male - toslink optical female 2 x toslink optical female, toslink coupler, optical audio extension note: Is it possible to connect a toslink cable with an mini optical male - toslink converter on the digital out of the Audigy 2? (see image below)

  Wow, creating IE Accelerators is superbly easy. If you want to learn how to create one, go here (some MSDN blog) and the MSDN documentation (clearly written). I was fed up of dictionary.com bringing all those popups and the stupid definitions of Google's dictionary. So I decided to scratch my own itch. I randomly stumbled on the site called Wordnik and it provides with all examples plus definitions plus lots more for words and its popup-free (as far as I know). So I decided to write and accelerator. • Windows Server 2012 R2 application installation slowness

  Good afternoon, Windows Server 2012 R2 as host fully up to date Windows Server 2012 R2 as guest fully up to date Whether I am running it as a host or guest, whenever I am installing an application that should take a couple minutes it always ends up 3x-5x longer than it should. If I take the same applications and install it on any other OS (IE 2k8, 7,) it they install very quickly. Dell server management software took 30 minutes or so when it takes 5 minutes or so on 2k8. Even a clean install not joined to domain I still experience this same slowness on applications I attempt to install. So my question to everyone is, are you or anyone else experiencing this? I cannot find anything on google so this is why I am here

• How to spread XML Sitemaps over several webservers behind AWS loadbalancer?

  We have a web portal with almost a million products and way more other urls. I wrote a script that checks database. If there is a new url needed or an old one update, this script will update/create the XML Sitemaps. But we have several servers behind the load balancer at our rented AWS space. Further this script checks database for each url if there was an update so that it updates the appropriate xml file too. My question is how to spread those XML Sitemaps over all webservers behind this AWS load balancer? Our approaches/ideas: we could just generate them on one server with a cron job and copy them to the other servers, but this could be difficult because of automatic raising numbers of servers and so on. we put them on our S3 - but this one is not avaible thru our domain, so I guess google will have a problem with it I let my script run on every webserver but change it in a way that it will generate each time all xml files if they do not exist. But then I would have conflicts with updated URLs in my database, where I saved timestamp of last changed value of every url Is there another - better - solution that I do not know? Are there any special services by amazon for such cases?

• "MAS SMS-CDMA" Bluetooth service

  I have my phone (LG Rumor Touch on Sprint) connected to my Windows 7 computer by Bluetooth. Usually, one of the services is unidentified and no driver is installed. Occasionally I have an issue that is solved by removing and re-pairing my phone with my computer. The last few times I have paired my computer and phone, the unidentified service was found and installed, as "MAS SMS-CDMA". It sounds like an interface that allows sending and reading SMS messages via Bluetooth. However, there is no software available from Sprint or LG that I have found that offers such functionality. Searching Google for "MAS SMS-CMDA" (with quotes) did not provide anything useful, only what appear to be CMDA information written in Spanish. What can I use this service for, and how do I use it?

• Outlook.com custom domain, Exchange ActiveSync too many connected devices

  I just setup Outlook.com to run on a custom domain. The web interface works well but when I connect it to Outlook 2013 I get the following error: There are too many devices syncing with this account. To sync using Outlook, try removing another device that is connected with this account such as a phone or another computer. File: outlook\pstprx\storeas\utils\airsyncstatuscodes.h Line: 88 HTTP/1.1 200 OK FolderStatus: 177 To re-try press F9... Error Code: 0x80004005 I've done my home work, using Google, and found that it is often due to having 3 or 4 devices connected to an account with 50+ folders. My account is empty, no email or folder, and is not synced with any devices, I confirmed that on http://devices.live.com. I'm out of option, any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

  Hi all : I am preparing for a Linux terminal assessment now, I tried to Google and found most resources are referring to the basic "grep" rather than the more powerful "egrep" -- well, that is at least what the professor said in lecture. I am always working with small samples so performance tuning is a thing too far away. So basically I'd like to know are there any areas where I must switch to egrep to do it in a better way? Is it safe to work with basic "grep" as for now? will there be potential risks? Sorry about my limited knowledge on Linux shell commands, the man page looks like a maze to me and honestly I haven't put much time in understanding all the features both command provide.

  I'm starting to use CrashPlan to backup my Win 7 PC. I've got it writing to my external HD (for quick local restores) and to CrashPlan Central (for offsite storage). I'd like to backup my entire C:\ drive (the only partition) in a way that: Preserves all of my installed software and configuration, but Avoids backing up log files and other ephemeral / temporary files that are regenerated during normal operation of the OS. Which files and/or directories should I be excluding from backups? I'd like to make this a community wiki, so that we could all contribute towards a definitive list.   The Jetsons, the future-oriented animated cartoon series from the 1960s, turned 50 this week. The Smithsonian takes a look at what the show meant, then and now. At the Smithsonian blog Paleofuture, Matt Novak looks back at the last 50 years and the impact that The Jetsons had. He writes: It’s important to remember that today’s political, social and business leaders were pretty much watching ”The Jetsons” on repeat during their most impressionable years. People are often shocked to learn that “The Jetsons” lasted just one season during its original run in 1962-63 and wasn’t revived until 1985. • Questioning the motivation for dependency injection: Why is creating an object graph hard?

  Dependency injection frameworks like Google Guice give the following motivation for their usage (source): To construct an object, you first build its dependencies. But to build each dependency, you need its dependencies, and so on. So when you build an object, you really need to build an object graph. Building object graphs by hand is labour intensive (...) and makes testing difficult. But I don't buy this argument: Even without dependency injection, I can write classes which are both easy to instantiate and convenient to test. E.g. the example from the Guice motivation page could be rewritten in the following way: class BillingService { private final CreditCardProcessor processor; private final TransactionLog transactionLog; // constructor for tests, taking all collaborators as parameters BillingService(CreditCardProcessor processor, TransactionLog transactionLog) { this.processor = processor; this.transactionLog = transactionLog; } // constructor for production, calling the (productive) constructors of the collaborators public BillingService() { this(new PaypalCreditCardProcessor(), new DatabaseTransactionLog()); } public Receipt chargeOrder(PizzaOrder order, CreditCard creditCard) { ... } } So dependency injection may really be an advantage in advanced use cases, but I don't need it for easy construction and testability, do I?

• Accessing a website's directory in IIS from File Zilla

  I have my Asp.net website deployed in my IIS's Virtual directory. Usually a FTP software like File Zilla is used to upload files to a website's directory from a remote system. File Zilla asks for a Host name, Username, password to connect to the remote server. Now all I want is my users in LAN should be able to access this directory from their system using FTP software like FileZilla. So how can I provide the Host name, username and password to my website's directory. I tried to find it on google but no help. Detailed steps please. Its IIS 5.1 version.

  Hello, At my home network I had a transparent proxy. This is the rule that forward all 80 traffic to my squid3.1 server at DMZ DNAT loc:!10.0.0.126 dmz:172.16.0.198:3128 tcp 80 - !172.16.0.198 Ok, I need to add more ips to avoid transparent proxy. I tried loc:!10.0.0.134,!10.0.0.126...but didnt work (also similars like [ip0,ip1]. I tried to google the answer cant find it (sorry no matches, not searching the right keywords) also I tried to read the docs, but they are really long (and indexes dont help me). Thanks!

• Is there a network "tee"-alike with one leg returning to /dev/null ?

  I've just built a new PostgreSQL server for my employers, which is happily replicating using WALs. I'm now left with the problem of verifying its performance. One nice way which came up in conversation is to break replication with the slave caught up and then direct all production traffic to both servers, discarding the responses from the new server and returning those from the current one to the clients. Once we're sure performance is OK, we re-sync the slave and can fail over with confidence. Bliss. This would require a TCP proxy capable of opening two outgoing connections for each incoming one, and discarding the data returned from one of them, which is a tricky thing to google for, it seems. Do the assembled brains know of such a thing, before I dive into libevent and write one?

• Discount Multilingual Day in the Life of User Experience

  Super article by the WikiMedia Foundation engineering folks about Designing for the Multilingual Web using the Wikipedia Universal Language Selector user interface as an example. Great ideas about tools that are available, as well as covering the basics of wireframing (mockups), prototyping, and user testing. Lots of inspiration there for developers and builders of apps who want to ensure their user experience (UX) really delivers for a global audience. Check out the use of the Firefox-based Pencil, how to translate your mockups, and how to perform remote user testing using Google+ Hangouts. Paul Giner demonstrates how to translate mockups. A little clunky and homespun in parts (I would prefer if tools such as Pencil or Balsamiq MockUps, and so on, could roundtrip directly from SVG to XLIFF for example, and Pencil doesn't work yet with the latest versions for Firefox) and I am not sure how it can really scales to enterprise-level use. However, the UX methodology is basically sound, and reinforces the importance of designing and testing in more that one language. The most powerful message for me is that you do not need special resources, training or expensive tools to deliver great-looking usable apps if you're a developer. Definitely worth considering if you're building apps out there in the community.

• What's the best self-tracking software for Linux?

  I'm looking for a way to track myself and receive quality data upon which I can write future scripts/programs. For example, I use Google Reader a lot. I'd like to track the hrefs that garner my clicks. Further, I'd like to drop all of the words of each href into a database where they can be stacked in a hierarchical manner. At the end of the week I want to know that "Ubuntu" garnered 448 clicks and "Cheetos" garnered 2. :) That's just one example... I'd like this tracking and data-collecting to extend beyond my browser.   Hello Everyone, It has been quite some time I am struggling to get Ruby On Rails working on my System which is having Windows XP operating system. I am trying to configure ROR to use apache and mysql so that I do not have to install additional servers to run ruby on rails. I also tried InstantRails but faced same problems. I went through the tutorial mentioned in getting rails to wrok on a windows machine running xampp and did all the steps which were necessary. All went fine (installing rails, running the ruby, gem and rails command from command prompt) but when I tried to run my application by typing localhost:3000/say/hello nothing happened and I was redirected to the google page for searching to this keyword. Please help me Thanks

Before its fine i can ping google.co.uk after cant get out. Is there something wrong in my syntax here or what is the issue...? Im just trying to NAT my VPN so i can get internet access. • Where or what are the instructions for installing FMOD Ex for Linux to use in g++?

  I'm looking for the instructions on how to install FMOD. I want to do extra credit for my computer graphics assignment - sound effects. A teammate wants me to go with something simple, and he suggested that I use FMOD Ex. (If you guys can think of something better, do suggest it, but so far FMOD looks more promising compared to SDL, OpenAL, etc.) Right now I'm having a really hard time finding the instructions for installing the latest version of FMOD (audio content creation tool) on Linux Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (32-bit) so that I can use it in g++ with OpenGL. I checked out this YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=avGxNkiAS9g, but it's for Windows. Then, there is a Ubuntu Forums thread which redirected me to this page: https://wiki.debian.org/FMOD, and it has some dated instructions. I've downloaded FMOD Ex v. 4.44.24, which I believe is the latest version. Now I'm looking at eight files: libfmodex.so; libfmodex64.so; libfmodex64-4.44.24.so; libfmodex-4.44.24.so; libfmodexL.so; libfmodexL64.so; libfmodexL64-4.44.24.so; libfmodexL-4.44.24.so ... not knowing what to do. I've looked everywhere I could think of: StackOverflow, here, YouTube, Google, ... and came up with zilch. Please help. Thanks in advance.
