  • Unable to run Microsoft Office 2010 install file

    - by Len
This problem began when I noticed that the icons in the Windows 7 task bar for MS Word and Outlook were generic. I rebuilt the icon cache. Still not the right icons, but not the generic "document" icons either, and both are identical (to each other). The two programs seem to be working OK. So then I tried to repair MS Office. I ran the setup file. It extracts the files, I get the splash screen, and then the message, "Setup has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." with a "Close program" button. Microsoft does not notify me about a solution. What I have tried: 1. running two other copies of the setup program; 2. doing an in-place re-install of Windows 7.

  • Using Property Builtin with GAE Datastore's Model

    - by ejel
I want to make attributes of GAE Model properties. The reason is for cases like to turn the value into uppercase before storing it. For a plain Python class, I would do something like: Foo(db.Model): def get_attr(self): return self.something def set_attr(self, value): self.something = value.upper() if value != None else None attr = property(get_attr, set_attr) However, GAE Datastore have their own concept of Property class, I looked into the documentation and it seems that I could override get_value_for_datastore(model_instance) to achieve my goal. Nevertheless, I don't know what model_instance is and how to extract the corresponding field from it. Is overriding GAE Property classes the right way to provides getter/setter-like functionality? If so, how to do it? Added: One potential issue of overriding get_value_for_datastore that I think of is it might not get called before the object was put into datastore. Hence getting the attribute before storing the object would yield an incorrect value.

  • Javascript: Passing large objects or strings between function considered a bad practice

    - by Mr. Smee
Is it considered a bad practice to pass around a large string or object (lets say from an ajax response) between functions? Would it be beneficial in any way save the response in a variable and keep reusing that variable? So in the code it would be something like this: var response; $.post(url, function(resp){ response = resp; }) function doSomething() { // do something with the response here } vs $.post(url, function(resp){ doSomething(resp); }) function doSomething(resp) { // do something with the resp here } Assume resp is a large object or string and it can be passed around between multiple functions.

Now I have to add one more class which returns Set<Some Object> public class X implements testMe() { public Set<Some OBject> doSomething() { } } How could i add this mehtod in the interface without breaking existing classes? Thanks Nayn

  • Django or Drupal, which one should I use that suits best my needs ?

    - by HJ-INCPP
Hello, I want to learn and use Drupal or Django for the following: dynamic web sites, medium database, multi-level users, paypal integration, content managment, speed (developing), security I like MVC, ORM and object-oriented prg. Which is better to jump into ? Which one is more mature, powerful, understandable, object-oriented and easier to use by the time ? What about Python Spring ... Also, which of these 3 are better documented, are better for a cv and have more extensions? Known languages: php, java, mysql Thank you !

  • .NET Windows Service, threads and garbage collection (possible memory leaks)

    - by Evgeny
I am developing a .NET Windows service that is creating a couple of threads and then uses these threads to send print jobs to printers (there is a thread for each printer). I have some issues which sometimes can be fixed by restarting the service. Some issues also arise when the service has been running for a while. This makes me suspect a possible memory leak. So, a couple of questions: Would a garbage collector collect an object if it was created inside a thread, or will the object exist until the thread is stopped/terminated? What tools can I use to monitor the amount of memory used by a Windows service and by a thread that I am starting programmatically?

  • Why can't I *override* and *new* a Property (C#) at the same time?

    - by Tim Lovell-Smith
According to this question it seems like you can do this for Methods. What I want to know is why it doesn't work when I try it with properties. public class Foo { public virtual object Value { get; set; } } public class Foo<T> : Foo { public override object Value { get { return base.Value; } set { base.Value = (T)value; //inject type-checking on sets } } public new T Value { get { return (T)base.Value; } set { base.Value = value; } } } Error message from C# 4.0 RC1 Error 1 The type 'ClassLibrary1.Foo' already contains a definition for 'Value' ClassLibrary1\Class1.cs 31 22 ClassLibrary1

  • Get Python 2.7's 'json' to not throw an exception when it encounters random byte strings

    - by Chris Dutrow
Trying to encode a a dict object into json using Python 2.7's json (ie: import json). The object has some byte strings in it that are "pickled" data using cPickle, so for json's purposes, they are basically random byte strings. I was using django.utils's simplejson and this worked fine. But I recently switched to Python 2.7 on google app engine and they don't seem to have simplejson available anymore. Now that I am using json, it throws an exception when it encounters bytes that aren't part of UTF-8. The error that I'm getting is: UnicodeDecodeError: 'utf8' codec can't decode byte 0x80 in position 0: invalid start byte It would be nice if it printed out a string of the character codes like the debugging might do, ie: \u0002]q\u0000U\u001201. But I really don't much care how it handles this data just as long as it doesn't throw an exception and continues serializing the information that it does recognize. How can I make this happen? Thanks!

  • ASP.NET Forms automation/serialization/binding

    - by creo
I need to implement many forms in ASP.NET application (for IRS mostly). There are will be a lot of standard controls for each form (textboxes, dropdowns, checkboxes, radio). And business entity assigned to each. What's the best solution to automate this process? I need to: Have layout stored in DB (in XML). Layout must support several columns, tabbed interface Automatically bind business object values to the form Automatically read form values and write to business object Must support automatic validation Some basic workflows support would be good I used to work with TFS and saw how they implemented WorkItem templates (.wit files). In general this is all I need. But what framework did they build it on? How can I utilize this solution? I know about Dynamic Data only: http://www.asp.net/dynamicdata

  • VFS and FS i-node difference

    - by gaffcz
What is the difference between VFS i-node and FS (e.g. EXT) i-node? Is it possible that EXT i-node is persistent (contains/points to data blocks), but VFS i-node is created just in i-node cache after read/use of EXT i-node? Or the VFS i-node is just an image of FS i-node (it's the same) and i-nodes in those systems, which are not working with i-nodes (e.g. FAT, NTFS) has to be emulated (HOW?) to allow VFS work with those FS like they would support i-nodes?

  • Resetting Objects vs. Constructing New Objects

    - by byronh
Is it considered better practice and/or more efficient to create a 'reset' function for a particular object that clears/defaults all the necessary member variables to allow for further operations, or to simply construct a new object from outside? I've seen both methods employed a lot, but I can't decide which one is better. Of course, for classes that represent database connections, you'd have to use a reset method rather than constructing a new one resulting in needless connecting/disconnecting, but I'm talking more in terms of abstraction classes. Can anyone give me some real-world examples of when to use each method? In my particular case I'm thinking mostly in terms of ORM or the Model in MVC. For example, if I would want to retrieve a bunch of database objects for display and modify them in one operation.

  • Issues using UITapGestureRecognizers in Interface Builder

    - by 5StringRyan
I'm attempting to use the UITapGestureRecognizer object that can be found in Interface Builder. I've dragged a single "UITapGestureRecognizer" from the object library to a single view xib. I then create an IBAction method from this tap gesture, for a simple test, I'm just printing an "NSLog" message to the console once there is a tap on the view. I've run this, and the tap method isn't being called. I right click the view in IB and I noticed that there is a warning "!" on the view's "Outlook Collections" I see: Outlook Collections gestureRecognizers - Tap Gesture Recognizer (!) The warning states: UIView does not have an outlet collection named gestureRecognizers. What do I need to do to remedy this?

  • How to get title from a website by xpath?

  • c++ "interface"-like classes similar to Java?

    - by William the Coderer
In Java, you can define an interface as a class with no actual code implementation, but only to define the methods that a class must implement. Those types can be passed as parameters to methods and returned from methods. In C++, a pure virtual class can't be used as a parameter or return type, from what I can tell. Any way to mimic Java's interface classes? I have a string class in C++, and several subclasses for different encodings (like UTFxxx, ISOxxx, etc) that derive from the base string class. However, since there are so many different encodings, the base class has no meaningful implementation. But it would serve well as an interface if I could handle it as its own object and calls to that object would call on the correct subclass it was inherited to.

  • Manipulating individual rows of a datagrid

    - by pfranchise
Hey, recently I started working on a webpage that has a datagrid. I understand how to add datasources and that sort of thing, or at least I am starting to get it. But my question is about manipulating individual rows or cells. Is that only possible during the databind event handler, that is the only place I have been able to do it so far. I am sure there is a more abstract way of doing the things I want to do, but there are times where I just want to say Datagrid.add(row). I mean, if the datagrid is made up of a certain object type, can I make a new object of that type and just chuck it on the end? I am still new to this stuff, so perhaps what I want to do would defeat the purpose of this added abstraction, but figured I would ask around. Thanks for any advice, tips, or tricks people feel like sharing. Edit: for clarification I am using c#, entity framework, asp.net, and an SQL database.

  • Trappings MySQL Warnings on Calls Wrapped in Classes -- Python

    - by chernevik
I can't get Python's try/else blocks to catch MySQL warnings when the execution statements are wrapped in classes. I have a class that has as a MySQL connection object as an attribute, a MySQL cursor object as another, and a method that run queries through that cursor object. The cursor is itself wrapped in a class. These seem to run queries properly, but the MySQL warnings they generate are not caught as exceptions in a try/else block. Why don't the try/else blocks catch the warnings? How would I revise the classes or method calls to catch the warnings? Also, I've looked through the prominent sources and can't find a discussion that helps me understand this. I'd appreciate any reference that explains this. Please see code below. Apologies for verbosity, I'm newbie. #!/usr/bin/python import MySQLdb import sys import copy sys.path.append('../../config') import credentials as c # local module with dbase connection credentials #============================================================================= # CLASSES #------------------------------------------------------------------------ class dbMySQL_Connection: def __init__(self, db_server, db_user, db_passwd): self.conn = MySQLdb.connect(db_server, db_user, db_passwd) def getCursor(self, dict_flag=True): self.dbMySQL_Cursor = dbMySQL_Cursor(self.conn, dict_flag) return self.dbMySQL_Cursor def runQuery(self, qryStr, dict_flag=True): qry_res = runQueryNoCursor(qryStr=qryStr, \ conn=self, \ dict_flag=dict_flag) return qry_res #------------------------------------------------------------------------ class dbMySQL_Cursor: def __init__(self, conn, dict_flag=True): if dict_flag: dbMySQL_Cursor = conn.cursor(MySQLdb.cursors.DictCursor) else: dbMySQL_Cursor = conn.cursor() self.dbMySQL_Cursor = dbMySQL_Cursor def closeCursor(self): self.dbMySQL_Cursor.close() #============================================================================= # QUERY FUNCTIONS #------------------------------------------------------------------------------ def runQueryNoCursor(qryStr, conn, dict_flag=True): dbMySQL_Cursor = conn.getCursor(dict_flag) qry_res =runQueryFnc(qryStr, dbMySQL_Cursor.dbMySQL_Cursor) dbMySQL_Cursor.closeCursor() return qry_res #------------------------------------------------------------------------------ def runQueryFnc(qryStr, dbMySQL_Cursor): qry_res = {} qry_res['rows'] = dbMySQL_Cursor.execute(qryStr) qry_res['result'] = copy.deepcopy(dbMySQL_Cursor.fetchall()) qry_res['messages'] = copy.deepcopy(dbMySQL_Cursor.messages) qry_res['query_str'] = qryStr return qry_res #============================================================================= # USAGES qry = 'DROP DATABASE IF EXISTS database_of_armaments' dbConn = dbMySQL_Connection(**c.creds) def dbConnRunQuery(): # Does not trap an exception; warning displayed to standard error. try: dbConn.runQuery(qry) except: print "dbConn.runQuery() caught an exception." def dbConnCursorExecute(): # Does not trap an exception; warning displayed to standard error. dbConn.getCursor() # try/except block does catches error without this try: dbConn.dbMySQL_Cursor.dbMySQL_Cursor.execute(qry) except Exception, e: print "dbConn.dbMySQL_Cursor.execute() caught an exception." print repr(e) def funcRunQueryNoCursor(): # Does not trap an exception; no warning displayed try: res = runQueryNoCursor(qry, dbConn) print 'Try worked. %s' % res except Exception, e: print "funcRunQueryNoCursor() caught an exception." print repr(e) #============================================================================= if __name__ == '__main__': print '\n' print 'EXAMPLE -- dbConnRunQuery()' dbConnRunQuery() print '\n' print 'EXAMPLE -- dbConnCursorExecute()' dbConnCursorExecute() print '\n' print 'EXAMPLE -- funcRunQueryNoCursor()' funcRunQueryNoCursor() print '\n'

  • DeleteObject method is missing in Entity Framework 4.1

    - by bobetko
This is driving me crazy. I am getting error that object doesn't contain definition for DeleteObject. Here is my line of code that produces an error: ctx.Tanks.DeleteObject(Tank); I tried to reference another object from another edmx file that my friend has created and then everything is fine, DeleteObject exists. I don't think I miss any references in my project. And project itself contains edmx file and I used DBContext to create POCOs. Any ideas?

  • Loading images from Facebook in Flash Builder

    - by wannax
Hi, I'm doing a Facebook App where I'd like to pull out all the possible images from a user's album. What I'm trying to do at the moment is a fql query so that i can find all the images that belong to that specific user. it goes something like that: protected function loadFromFacebook(event:MouseEvent):void { var fql:String = "select src_small from photo where owner = me()"; Facebook.fqlQuery(fql, handleGetPhotosResponse); } private function handleGetPhotosResponse(event:Object, fail:Object):void { if (event != null){ facebookPhotos = new ArrayCollection(event as Array); } } I store this images in an array collection but I don't know how to proceed after that. How can I load those images into, say, a Tile List or a Loader? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks

  • Set Thunderbird "from" address by incoming "to" address

    - by user293698
I have configured my email server to cache all email to my mailbox. So [email protected] and [email protected] go to one mailbox. Every forum, registration, and guy get their own address for sending me emails so I can deliver it to /dev/null if anyone start spamming. That's the working setup. Now the problem: If I reply to a message, then Thunderbird always sets my default Identity as sender. I know I can add additional identities, but I don't want to add every address. How can I configure when a email is sent to [email protected], I answer with [email protected].

  • Element point map for html5 canvas element, need algorithm

    - by Artiom Chilaru
I'm currently working on a pure html 5 canvas implementation of the "flying tag cloud sphere", which many of you have undoubtedly seen as a flash object in some pages. The tags are drawn fine, and the performance is satisfactory, but there's one thing in the canvas element that's kind of breaking this idea: you can't identify the objects that you've drawn on a canvas, as it's just a simple flat "image".. What I have to do in this case is catch the click event, and try to "guess" which element was clicked. So I have to have some kind of matrix, which stores a link to a tag object for each pixel on the canvas, AND I have to update this matrix on every redraw. Now this sounds incredibly inefficient, and before I even start trying to implement this, I want to ask the community - is there some "well known" algorithm that would help me in this case? Or maybe I'm just missing something, and the answer is right behind the corner? :)

  • Problems Enforcing Referential Integrity on SQL Server Tables

    - by SidC
Hello All, I have a SQL Server 2005 database comprised of Customer, Quote, QuoteDetail tables. I want/need to enforce referential integrity such that when an insert is made on quotedetail, the quote and customer tables are also affected. I have tried my best to set up primary/foreign keys on my tables but need some help. Here's the scripts for my tables as they stand now (please don't laugh): Customers: USE [Diel_inventory] GO /****** Object: Table [dbo].[Customers] Script Date: 05/08/2010 03:39:04 ******/ SET ANSI_NULLS ON GO SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Customers]( [pkCustID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [CompanyName] [nvarchar](50) NULL, [Address] [nvarchar](50) NULL, [City] [nvarchar](50) NULL, [State] [nvarchar](2) NULL, [ZipCode] [nvarchar](5) NULL, [OfficePhone] [nvarchar](12) NULL, [OfficeFAX] [nvarchar](12) NULL, [Email] [nvarchar](50) NULL, [PrimaryContactName] [nvarchar](50) NULL, CONSTRAINT [PK_Customers] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ([pkCustID] ASC)WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY] ) ON [PRIMARY] Quotes: USE [Diel_inventory] GO /****** Object: Table [dbo].[Quotes] Script Date: 05/08/2010 03:30:46 ******/ SET ANSI_NULLS ON GO SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Quotes]( [pkQuoteID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [fkCustomerID] [int] NOT NULL, [QuoteDate] [timestamp] NOT NULL, [NeedbyDate] [datetime] NULL, [QuoteAmt] [decimal](6, 2) NOT NULL, [QuoteApproved] [bit] NOT NULL, [fkOrderID] [int] NOT NULL, CONSTRAINT [PK_Bids] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ( [pkQuoteID] ASC)WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY] ) ON [PRIMARY] GO ALTER TABLE [dbo].[Quotes] WITH CHECK ADD CONSTRAINT [fkCustomerID] FOREIGN KEY([fkCustomerID]) REFERENCES [dbo].[Customers] ([pkCustID]) GO ALTER TABLE [dbo].[Quotes] CHECK CONSTRAINT [fkCustomerID] QuoteDetail: USE [Diel_inventory] GO /****** Object: Table [dbo].[QuoteDetail] Script Date: 05/08/2010 03:31:58 ******/ SET ANSI_NULLS ON GO SET QUOTED_IDENTIFIER ON GO CREATE TABLE [dbo].[QuoteDetail]( [ID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [fkQuoteID] [int] NOT NULL, [fkCustomerID] [int] NOT NULL, [fkPartID] [int] NULL, [PartNumber1] [float] NOT NULL, [Qty1] [int] NOT NULL, [PartNumber2] [float] NULL, [Qty2] [int] NULL, [PartNumber3] [float] NULL, [Qty3] [int] NULL, [PartNumber4] [float] NULL, [Qty4] [int] NULL, [PartNumber5] [float] NULL, [Qty5] [int] NULL, [PartNumber6] [float] NULL, [Qty6] [int] NULL, [PartNumber7] [float] NULL, [Qty7] [int] NULL, [PartNumber8] [float] NULL, [Qty8] [int] NULL, [PartNumber9] [float] NULL, [Qty9] [int] NULL, [PartNumber10] [float] NULL, [Qty10] [int] NULL, [PartNumber11] [float] NULL, [Qty11] [int] NULL, [PartNumber12] [float] NULL, [Qty12] [int] NULL, [PartNumber13] [float] NULL, [Qty13] [int] NULL, [PartNumber14] [float] NULL, [Qty14] [int] NULL, [PartNumber15] [float] NULL, [Qty15] [int] NULL, [PartNumber16] [float] NULL, [Qty16] [int] NULL, [PartNumber17] [float] NULL, [Qty17] [int] NULL, [PartNumber18] [float] NULL, [Qty18] [int] NULL, [PartNumber19] [float] NULL, [Qty19] [int] NULL, [PartNumber20] [float] NULL, [Qty20] [int] NULL, CONSTRAINT [PK_QuoteDetail] PRIMARY KEY CLUSTERED ( [ID] ASC )WITH (PAD_INDEX = OFF, STATISTICS_NORECOMPUTE = OFF, IGNORE_DUP_KEY = OFF, ALLOW_ROW_LOCKS = ON, ALLOW_PAGE_LOCKS = ON) ON [PRIMARY] ) ON [PRIMARY] GO ALTER TABLE [dbo].[QuoteDetail] WITH CHECK ADD CONSTRAINT [FK_QuoteDetail_Customers] FOREIGN KEY ([fkCustomerID]) REFERENCES [dbo].[Customers] ([pkCustID]) GO ALTER TABLE [dbo].[QuoteDetail] CHECK CONSTRAINT [FK_QuoteDetail_Customers] GO ALTER TABLE [dbo].[QuoteDetail] WITH CHECK ADD CONSTRAINT [FK_QuoteDetail_PartList] FOREIGN KEY ([fkPartID]) REFERENCES [dbo].[PartList] ([RecID]) GO ALTER TABLE [dbo].[QuoteDetail] CHECK CONSTRAINT [FK_QuoteDetail_PartList] GO ALTER TABLE [dbo].[QuoteDetail] WITH CHECK ADD CONSTRAINT [FK_QuoteDetail_Quotes] FOREIGN KEY([fkQuoteID]) REFERENCES [dbo].[Quotes] ([pkQuoteID]) GO ALTER TABLE [dbo].[QuoteDetail] CHECK CONSTRAINT [FK_QuoteDetail_Quotes] Your advice/guidance on how to set these up so that customer ID in Customers is the same as in Quotes (referential integrity) and that CustomerID is inserted on Quotes and Customers when an insert is made to QuoteDetial would be much appreciated. • How to make DropDownList automatically be selected based on the Label.Text

    - by Archana B.R
I have a DropDownlist in the GridView, which should be visible only when edit is clicked. I have bound the DropDownList from code behind. When I click on Edit, the label value of that cell should automatically get selected in the DropDownList. The code I have tried is: protected void GridView3_RowDataBound(object sender, GridViewRowEventArgs e) { if (e.Row.RowType == DataControlRowType.DataRow) { SqlCommand cmd = new SqlCommand("SELECT Location_Name FROM Location_Table"); DropDownList bind_drop = (e.Row.FindControl("DropList") as DropDownList); bind_drop.DataSource = this.ExecuteQuery(cmd, "SELECT"); bind_drop.DataTextField = "Location_Name"; bind_drop.DataValueField = "Location_Name"; bind_drop.DataBind(); string Loc_type = (e.Row.FindControl("id2") as Label).Text.Trim(); bind_drop.Items.FindByValue(Loc_type).Selected = true; } } When I run the code, it gives an exception error Object reference not set in the last line of the above code. Cannot find out whats wrong. Kindly help

  • How do I configure namecheap for "arbitrarily-nested" wildcard subdomains?

    - by rabidsnail
I'm trying to set up something like nyud.net, where any arbitrary chain of subdomains resolves to the same CNAME record (which in my case points to an amazon elastic load balancer). Ex: www.gogle.com.nyud.net:8080 points to one of their cache servers, which looks at the HOST header and returns www.google.com. I'm using namecheap as my dns host. Adding a CNAME record for *.mydomain.com doesn't seem to do anything (nslookup gives NXDOMAIN for all subdomains). What do I have to do to set this up? Do I have to use something fancier than namecheap (like route53)?

This made gparted call e2fsck (version 1.42.4 (12-Jun-2012)) e2fsck -f -y -v /dev/sdb1 Although gparted called e2fsck with the "-v" option, sadly it doesn't show me the output of my e2fsck process (bugreport https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=467925 ) I started this whole thing on Sunday (2012-11-04_2200) evening, so about 48 hours ago, this is what htop says about it now (2012-11-06-1900): PID USER PRI NI VIRT RES SHR S CPU% MEM% TIME+ Command 3704 root 39 19 1560M 1166M 768 R 98.0 19.5 42h56:43 e2fsck -f -y -v /dev/sdb1 Now I found a few posts on the internet that discuss e2fsck running slow, for example: http://gparted-forum.surf4.info/viewtopic.php?id=13613 where they write that its a good idea to see if the disk is just that slow because maybe its damaged, and I think these outputs tell me that this is not the case in my case: kaefert@blechmobil:~$ sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sdb /dev/sdb: Timing cached reads: 3562 MB in 2.00 seconds = 1783.29 MB/sec Timing buffered disk reads: 82 MB in 3.01 seconds = 27.26 MB/sec kaefert@blechmobil:~$ sudo hdparm /dev/sdb /dev/sdb: multcount = 0 (off) readonly = 0 (off) readahead = 256 (on) geometry = 364801/255/63, sectors = 5860533160, start = 0 However, although I can read quickly from that disk, this disk speed doesn't seem to be used by e2fsck, considering tools like gkrellm or iotop or this: kaefert@blechmobil:~$ iostat -x Linux 3.2.0-2-amd64 (blechmobil) 2012-11-06 _x86_64_ (2 CPU) avg-cpu: %user %nice %system %iowait %steal %idle 14,24 47,81 14,63 0,95 0,00 22,37 Device: rrqm/s wrqm/s r/s w/s rkB/s wkB/s avgrq-sz avgqu-sz await r_await w_await svctm %util sda 0,59 8,29 2,42 5,14 43,17 160,17 53,75 0,30 39,80 8,72 54,42 3,95 2,99 sdb 137,54 5,48 9,23 0,20 587,07 22,73 129,35 0,07 7,70 7,51 16,18 2,17 2,04 Now I researched a little bit on how to find out what e2fsck is doing with all that processor time, and I found the tool strace, which gives me this: kaefert@blechmobil:~$ sudo strace -p3704 lseek(4, 41026998272, SEEK_SET) = 41026998272 write(4, "\212\354K[_\361\3nl\212\245\352\255jR\303\354\312Yv\334p\253r\217\265\3567\325\257\3766"..., 4096) = 4096 lseek(4, 48404766720, SEEK_SET) = 48404766720 read(4, "\7t\260\366\346\337\304\210\33\267j\35\377'\31f\372\252\ffU\317.y\211\360\36\240c\30`\34"..., 4096) = 4096 lseek(4, 41027002368, SEEK_SET) = 41027002368 write(4, "\232]7Ws\321\352\t\1@[+5\263\334\276{\343zZx\352\21\316`1\271[\202\350R`"..., 4096) = 4096 lseek(4, 48404770816, SEEK_SET) = 48404770816 read(4, "\17\362r\230\327\25\346//\210H\v\311\3237\323K\304\306\361a\223\311\324\272?\213\tq \370\24"..., 4096) = 4096 lseek(4, 41027006464, SEEK_SET) = 41027006464 write(4, "\367yy>x\216?=\324Z\305\351\376&\25\244\210\271\22\306}\276\237\370(\214\205G\262\360\257#"..., 4096) = 4096 lseek(4, 48404774912, SEEK_SET) = 48404774912 read(4, "\365\25\0\21|T\0\21}3t_\272\373\222k\r\177\303\1\201\261\221$\261B\232\3142\21U\316"..., 4096) = 4096 ^CProcess 3704 detached around 16 of these lines every second, so 4 read and 4 write operations every second, which I don't consider to be a lot.. And finally, my question: Will this process ever finish? If those numbers from fseek (48404774912) represent bytes, that would be something like 45 gigabytes, with this beeing a 3 terrabyte disk, which would give me 134 days to go, if the speed stays constant, and he scans the disk like this completly and only once. Do you have some advice for me? I have most of the data on that disk elsewhere, but I've put a lot of hours into sorting and merging it to this disk, so I would prefer to getting this disk up and running again, without formatting it anew. I don't think that the hardware is damaged since the disk is only a few months and since I can't see any I/O errors in the dmesg output. UPDATE: I just looked at the strace output again (2012-11-06_2300), now it looks like this: lseek(4, 1419860611072, SEEK_SET) = 1419860611072 read(4, "3#\f\2447\335\0\22A\355\374\276j\204'\207|\217V|\23\245[\7VP\251\242\276\207\317:"..., 4096) = 4096 lseek(4, 43018145792, SEEK_SET) = 43018145792 write(4, "]\206\231\342Y\204-2I\362\242\344\6R\205\361\324\177\265\317C\334V\324\260\334\275t=\10F."..., 4096) = 4096 lseek(4, 1419860615168, SEEK_SET) = 1419860615168 read(4, "\262\305\314Y\367\37x\326\245\226\226\320N\333$s\34\204\311\222\7\315\236\336\300TK\337\264\236\211n"..., 4096) = 4096 lseek(4, 43018149888, SEEK_SET) = 43018149888 write(4, "\271\224m\311\224\25!I\376\16;\377\0\223H\25Yd\201Y\342\r\203\271\24eG<\202{\373V"..., 4096) = 4096 lseek(4, 1419860619264, SEEK_SET) = 1419860619264 read(4, ";d\360\177\n\346\253\210\222|\250\352T\335M\33\260\320\261\7g\222P\344H?t\240\20\2548\310"..., 4096) = 4096 lseek(4, 43018153984, SEEK_SET) = 43018153984 write(4, "\360\252j\317\310\251G\227\335{\214`\341\267\31Y\202\360\v\374\307oq\3063\217Z\223\313\36D\211"..., 4096) = 4096 So this number of the lseeks before the reads, like 1419860619264 are already a lot bigger, standing for 1.29 terabytes if the numbers are bytes, so it doesn't seem to be a linear progress on a big scale, maybe there are only some areas that need work, that have big gaps in between them.
