  I'm attempting to create an inventory system using a vector implementation, but I seem to be having some troubles. I'm running into issues using a struct I made.   Windows CE is a 32 bits OS since day one, so it makes sense tools shipped with PB, compiler, linker, assembler and etc, are for targeting to 32 bits system. But occasionally, if you are developing x86 based system and especially working on some boot code, such as boot sector of BIOSLOADER, that will be a problem. Normally, as PB provides the prebuilt boot sector image but if you ever need to rebuilt it, what should you do? You may say as it's an x86, perhaps you can use VS or Windows SDK to build it. But unfortunately, today's desktop Windows tool chains are also 32 or even 64 bits only, you need to find something older. VC++ 6.0, but how can you find one? This Website http://thestarman.pcministry.com/asm/masm.htm arranges some useful resources. Basically, you need 2 thing, the 16 bits MASM and 16 bits linker. • What is the rationale behind Apache Jena's *everything is an interface if possible* design philosophy?

  If you are familiar with the Java RDF and OWL engine Jena, then you have run across their philosophy that everything should be specified as an interface when possible. This means that a Resource, Statement, RDFNode, Property, and even the RDF Model, etc., are, contrary to what you might first think, Interfaces instead of concrete classes. This leads to the use of Factories quite often. Since you can't instantiate a Property or Model, you must have something else do it for you --the Factory design pattern. My question, then, is, what is the reasoning behind using this pattern as opposed to a traditional class hierarchy system? It is often perfectly viable to use either one. For example, if I want a memory backed Model instead of a database-backed Model I could just instantiate those classes, I don't need ask a Factory to give me one. As an aside, I'm in the process of writing a library for manipulating Pearltrees data, which is exported from their website in the form of an RDF/XML document. As I write this library, I have many options for defining the relationships present in the Peartrees data. What is nice about the Pearltrees data is that it has a very logical class system: A tree is made up of pearls, which can be either Page, Reference, Alias, or Root pearls. My question comes from trying to figure out if I should adopt the Jena philosophy in my library which uses Jena, or if I should disregard it, pick my own design philosophy, and stick with it.

  Ubuntu 12.04 has problem with Intel GM45 Chipset, featuring the the Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD I have a COMPAQ Presario CQ70 laptop with an Intel GM45 chipset that features the Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD. I was using the second HDMI video port to drive both a projector or a second monitor. Everything was working fine under Ubuntu 8.04, 9.04, 10.04 and 11.04, however, when I upgraded to 12.04 the second monitor stopped working. What I mean when I say stopped working is: boot with monitor plugged in. Blank screen! Power off, unplug monitor and power on everything works. Plug in monitor (only mode that works in Mirror mode) two monitors that look same. Close laptop lid. screen goes blank only option for useful system is power off and unplug monitor. If I attempt to Adjust the monitor to maximum resolution that the monitor will handle and turn off mirror mode nothing can be moved onto that screen. This all worked fine with earlier versions of Ubuntu, is there a notes about the changes to the graphics management system in 12.04, like there is for the resolver change?

• How to dual-boot Windows XP & Ubuntu 12.04

  When I install Ubuntu 12.04 along side Windows XP, I encountered a choice for "Device for boot loader installation". I selected "Windows XP Professional" Now, when I select Windows XP from the grub, it appeares a black page and Windwos dosent boot. I tried Boot-Repair from Ubuntu but it dosent solve this problem. The only thing that helps me to boot Windwos XP is a Bootable CD of Windows. when I put this CD and boot from CD, it shows some options and when I select "Boot from Hard Drive" , my own Windows boots!   For some inexplicable reason the capital d key on my Ubuntu system is no longer producing output. Hitting caps lock and then d produces a D. I've tried multiple keyboards and the issue is the same. • In Ubuntu 13.10, none of the hotkeys of LibreOffice works in non-English keyboard layout

  In Ubuntu 13.10, the hotkeys/shortcut-keys (Ctrl+b, Ctrl+s etc) in LibreOffice are language dependent and work in English language only. While writing in any other language (i.e. any Cyrillic and/or any Bengali etc) it's impossible to use hotkeys, they just don't do anything. Switching to English input language enable hotkeys once again. This is very frustrating as user needs to switch language to save document, to make it bold, or italic, etc. This was not experienced in Ubuntu 13.04. Steps to reproduce: System Settings Text Entry. Add another keyboard layout beside English [In my case it is Bengali (Probhat)] Now launch Writer. Switch the keyboard layout from English (US) to Bengali (Probhat) by pressing Ctrl+Space. Press Ctrl+B to change font weight to bold. Error: Font weight does not get changed. Expected: Font weight should change to bold. Note: none other system hotkeys work as expected. I.e. Ctrl+s to save, or Ctrl+b to subscript, or Ctrl+i to italic etc. Workaround: The only way is to - change the keyboard layout to English then press desired hotkey then switch keyboard layout back to Bengali. The issue is critical, as it make writer very slow for keyboard-only typing.

  I upgraded ubuntu, but the upgrade broke firefox, adobe flash plugin and corrupted the package database. I ran the suggested catalog repair, no change. I ran apt-get -f install, no change. I ran apt purge packageName, no change. How can I resolve this circular dependency? • Best practices for caching search queries

  I am trying to improve performance of my ASP.net Web Api by adding a data cache but I am not sure how exactly to go about it as it seems to be more complex than most caching scenarios. An example is I have a table of Locations and an api to retrieve locations via search, for an autocomplete. /api/location/Londo and the query would be something like SELECT * FROM Locations WHERE Name like 'Londo%' These locations change very infrequently so I would like to cache them to prevent trips to the database for no real reason and improve the response time. Looking at caching options I am using the Windows Azure Appfabric system, the problem is it's just a key/value cache. Since I can only retrieve items based on keys I couldn't actually use it for this scenario as far as Im aware. Is what I am trying to do bad use of a caching system? Should I try looking into NoSql DB which could possibly run as a cache for something like this to improve performance? Should I just cache the entire table/collection in a single key with a specific data structure which could assist with the searching and then do the search upon retrieval of the data?

• Where to find Hg/Git technical support?

  Posting this as a kind of a favour for a former coleague, so I don't know the exact circumstances, but I'll try to provide as much info as I can ... A friend from my old place of employment (maritime research institute; half government/commercial funding) has asked me if I could find out who provides technical support (commercial) for two major DVCS's of today - Git and Mercurial. They have been using VCS for years now (Subversion while I was there, don't know what they're using now - probably the same), and now they're renewing their software licences (they have to give a plan some time in advance for everything ... then it goes "through the system") and although they will be keeping Subversion as well, they would like to justify beginning of DVCS as an alternative system (most people root for Mercurial since it seems simpler; mostly engineers and physicians there who are not that interested in checking Git repos for corruption and the finer workings of Git, but I believe any one of the two could "pass") - but it has to have a price (can be zero; no problem there) and some sort of official technical support. It is a pro forma matter, but it has to be specified. Most of the people there are using one of the two already, but this has to be specified to be official. So, I'm asking you - do you know where could one go for Git or Mercurial technical support (can be commercial)? Technical forums and the like are out of the question. It has to work on the principle: - I have a problem. - I post a question with the details. - I get an answer in specified time. It can be "we cannot do that." but it has to be an official answer and given in agreed time. I'm sure by now most of you understand what I'm asking, but if not - post a comment or similar. Also, if you think of any reasons which could decide justification of introducing Git/Hg from an technical and administrative viewpoint, feel free to write them down also.

  I am aware this question has been asked before, but unfortunately I am new to the language, so the complicated explanations I've found do not help me in the least. I need a lighting engine for my game, and I've tried some procedural lighting systems. This method works the best: if (light[xx - 1, yy] > light[xx, yy]) light[xx, yy] = light[xx - 1, yy] - lightPass; if (light[xx, yy - 1] > light[xx, yy]) light[xx, yy] = light[xx, yy - 1] - lightPass; if (light[xx + 1, yy] > light[xx, yy]) light[xx, yy] = light[xx + 1, yy] - lightPass; if (light[xx, yy + 1] > light[xx, yy]) light[xx, yy] = light[xx, yy + 1] - lightPass; (Subtracts adjacent values by 'lightPass' variable if they are more bright) (It's in a for() loop) This is all fine and dandy except for a an obvious reason: The system favors whatever comes first in the for() loop This is what the above code looks like applied to my game: If I could get some help on creating a new procedural or otherwise lighting system I would really appreciate it!

• Playing Age of Empires II multiplayer in VirtualBox Over wi fi network

  I installed Age of Empires II (Expansion) in VirtualBox (hosting Windows XP). It works great in single player mode. Unfortunately, I tried playing multiplayer via WI-FI which I created on my Ubuntu machine and can't seem to join games. But when I connected to my WI-FI router other able to connect to my system and we can play multiplayer mode This is what I've done so far to try to resolve the issue: I noticed that the IP address of my virtual machine was 10.0.x.x, While the local IP on Ubuntu is 192.168.x.x, which I figured was a Problem. So I changed from NAT networking to bridged networking in VirtualBox . I turned off the Windows firewall in the virtual machine and don't have any ports blocked by Ubuntu, so no software firewall should be at fault. However I'm still unable to play multiplayer games, and suspect that some kind of networking issue lies at the heart of the problem. I'm not sure what else I would need to change, however. So essentially I was wondering if anyone else here has managed to play AOE2, or any similar game, inside VirtualBox from Ubuntu, and if so what you needed to do to make it possible. Or if anyone has suggestions on where else to look to figure out the problem, I'd appreciate that as well. Unfortunately AOE2 itself doesn't provide any debugging information to troubleshoot the inability to connect to network games. • Picasa installs but is missing in the menu

  Acer Aspire One Netbook Running Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.10 (freshly installed) 1 GB Ram 150 GM HDD Space I am trying to install Picasa and when I do, it runs its course telling me that it has been installed. But when I try to look for Picasa to run it, it didnt show in the menu anywhere. I am unable to find Picasa on my system and it says that it has been installed already when I try to reinstall it. I have tried a few things; looked for the key: wget -q -O - https://dl-ssl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub | apt-key add - .. and then added it. tried the following commands after adding Picasa to my source list: sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install picasa and here is what I got: swapnil@iva-swapo-netbook:~$ sudo apt-get install picasa Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done picasa is already the newest version. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded. and when I tried to look for Picasa again.. I couldnt find it. So I am unable to install Picasa on my system. Please help. (I am also running this thread on ubuntu forums and havent got the solution yet so I am now here) tried Jorge's solution and it brought Picasa immediately, however I am unable to keep it in the launcher. There is no such option. All I can see is only 2 options: 1. Wine 2. Quit Still need help to keep it in the menu/launcher !

  Video in VLC or SMplayer is often in black and white with washed-out colors in the wrong place (translated considerably). Moreover, the last video image is often visible when a new video is started and persist as long as the new video is running. • Won't boot after installing Ubuntu 12.04 sucessfully

  I installed 12.04 successfully and rebooted (I took out my installation CD), and selected the newly installed Linux partition to boot from rEFIt. Then it just comes up with this error message: Error loading operating system which could not be more vague. Take that back. I guess it could say just "error." I don't even get to the boot prompt which limits what I can do. I cannot boot into rescue mode. I tried boot-repair, but it took more than 24 hours to check the system configuration, so I gave up on that. I'm running a Mac Mini with its main OS being Mac OS X 10.5.8. I have an alternate OS Windows XP installed, which was virtually destroyed by this Linux installation. I sacrificed my working, speedy Windows partition for something that won't even boot up. What was I thinking. My Mac partition is slow as crap. I've tried installing 12.04 many times with two different disks. The first time, I had one partition for Linux, then I had 2 (swap+main), then 3 (swap, main and BIOS), then 4 which is what I have now (swap, main, BIOS, and boot/grub). The only way I could get through the install without GRUB giving up was if I created a separate partition for it. Which was pointless, because it did install successfully, but it still doesn't boot up at all. Could rEFIt be booting off of the BIOS or one of the other partitions? Because if that's the case, there is no alternative, because Mac itself without rEFIt refuses to recognize a Linux ext4 (or 2 or 3) format partition. Apple always has to make everything so difficult. If I'm not mistaken, rEFIt is the only application of its kind for Mac. I can boot off of the CD back to the install/try screen. This is extremely upsetting, can you guys help? Please?

• GParted in UBUNTU shows entire disk as UNALLOCATED SPACE

  Good day to everyone. I hope someone can help me with my problem. I have a dual boot Windows and Ubuntu system. I recently encountered an hd0 out of disk error and wasn't able to boot Ubuntu. So I booted into Windows, after 2 to 3 times of booting and rebooting Windows, I tried booting Ubuntu but still I get the hd0 out of disk error. I decided to run Ubuntu from LIVEUSB to try to fix my Ubuntu partition using GParted, but when I run GParted, it shows my entire disk as UNALLOCATED SPACE! The strange thing is that Nautilus still shows and mounts my partitions. Also every time I boot into Windows , my partitions exists and I am able to read and write to them. I have no idea what is wrong. Please help! I can't stand using Windows since most of the tools I use are in Ubuntu. I don't mind reinstalling Ubuntu. In fact I already tried reinstalling using the LIVEUSB but I wasn't able to, since GParted or the Ubuntu installer itself does not recognized my partitions and shows the entire disk as unallocated space. I am currently running Ubuntu from LIVEUSB. • Is Intellisense faster in Visual Studio 2012 compared to Visual Studio 2010 for C++ projects?

  We switched to VS2010 from VS2003 a few months ago, and there are many many improvements. But the speed of Intellisense is not one of them (although it does generate higher quality results, which is great). I read that Intellisense and the MSDN help system were being improved in VS2012, so I'm curious if its actually faster? The only data I could find were graphs of an early release (VS2011). For the record, I am using a vanilla install of VS2010 with SP1 on Windows 7 SP1 (x64). No plugins or add-ins running. What I'm looking for specifically: Has the speed of intellisense autocomplete improved? Has the speed of F12 (goto definition) improved? The answers to these questions will help in determining if VS2012 is worth the money to upgrade at this time as the intellisense slowness would be the only major reason for upgrading. I'd also be interested in knowing if the help system has improved. I'm currently using MSDN help from VS2008SP1 because it has filtering and is faster.
