• Clicking on MenuItem without clicking on the text

  I've got a Menu, and I want to click on the menu, but not on the text if you guys know what i mean. The MenuItem has a border, or something like this, but when I click on it it won't redirect to the page I want unless I click on text. Is it possible to click on the whole "Button" and redirect or do what is need to do? • How to direct people to fill out a form

  What is the best way to get people to fill out a form correctly? For instance I originally had a "Name" field on a form and I want 1 person per form. People filled it out like this: "Mark & Becky Newsman". So I broke it into 2 fields, "First Name" and "Last Name", And people are still filling it out wrong, like "First Name" = "Mark & Becky", "Last Name" = "Newsman". Are there any recommendations on how better to get people to understand that only one person's name should go there? I currently have it on two lines, would it work better to put both fields on one line? If this is on the wrong site go ahead and move it to the correct site.

The warning I get when I run this is that coord and icoord are unused, but I used them in the viewDidLoad implementation, is there a reason why this does not work? • Custom Button on top of another custom button?

  I'm trying to make two custom buttons in code. One that fills the full screen with a small button on top. The problem I'm having is the larger button is triggered when the smaller button is tapped. I've tried doing exactly the same thing with IB and it works. Is there some sort of trapping/masking method that I need to use with code? I've checked the documentation and not come across anything that would suggest why this is happening. • Code Coverage tool for BlackBerry

  I'm looking for a code coverage tool that I can use with a BlackBerry application. I'm using J2ME-Unit for Unit Testing and I want to see how much of my code is being covered by my tests. I've tried using Cobertura for J2ME but after days of wrestling with it I failed to get any results from it. (I believe that the instrumentation is un-done by the RAPC compilation). And despite this message, the project seems to be dead. I've looked at JInjector but the project seems very incomplete. There is little (if any) documentation and although it claims to be able to work with BlackBerry projects, I haven't seen any places where it has been used for that purpose. I've played with the project quite a bit but to no avail. I've also tried the "Coverage" view in the BlackBerry JDE, even though I use Eclipse for development. The view stays permanently blank, regardless of clicking "Refresh" and running the application from the JDE. I've looked at most of the tools on this SO thread, but they won't work with J2ME/BlackBerry projects. Has anyone had any success with any code coverage tools on the BlackBerry? If so, what tools have you used? How have you used them? If anyone has managed to get JInjector or Cobertura for J2ME to work with a BlackBerry project, what did you have to do to get it working?

• HTML Submit button vs AJAX based Post (ASP.NET MVC)

  I'm after some design advice. I'm working on an application with a fellow developer. I'm from the Webforms world and he's done a lot with jQuery and AJAX stuff. We're collaborating on a new ASP.MVC 1.0 app. He's done some pretty amazing stuff that I'm just getting my head around, and used some 3rd party tools etc. for datagrids etc. but... He rarely uses Submit buttons whereas I use them most of the time. He uses a button but then attaches Javascript to it that calls an MVC action which returns a JSON object. He then parses the object to update the datagrid. I'm not sure how he deals with server-side validation - I think he adds a message property to the JSON object. A sample scenario would be to "Save" a new record that then gets added to the gridview. The user doesn't see a postback as such, so he uses jQuery to disable the UI whilst the controller action is running. TBH, it looks pretty cool. However, the way I'd do it would be to use a Submit button to postback, let the ModelBinder populate a typed model class, parse that in my controller Action method, update the model (and apply any validation against the model), update it with the new record, then send it back to be rendered by the View. Unlike him, I don't return a JSON object, I let the View (and datagrid) bind to the new model data. Both solutions "work" but we're obviously taking the application down different paths so one of us has to re-work our code... and we don't mind whose has to be done. What I'd prefer though is that we adopt the "industry-standard" way of doing this. I'm unsure as to whether my WebForms background is influencing the fact that his way just "doesn't feel right", in that a "submit" is meant to submit data to the server. • Regex and Pattern Matching in Scala

  I am not strong in regex, and pretty new to Scala. I would like to be able to find a match between the first letter of a word, and one of the letters in a group such as "ABC". In pseudocode, this might look something like: case Process(word) => word.firstLetter match { case([a-c][A-C]) => case _ => } } but I don't know how to grab the first letter in Scala instead of Java, how to express the regular expression properly, nor if it's possible to do this within a case class. • How do I convert an AMD module from a singleton to an instance?

  I'm trying to convert a working Durandal view model module from a singleton to an instance. What am I doing wrong? Why can I set the property but can't access the knockout observable? How should I refactor the original code so that I get a new instance on every request? My efforts to simplify the code for this question hid the actual problem. My real code was using Q promises and calling two methods with Q.All. Since Q is in the global namespace, it couldn't resolve my viewmodel after converting to a function. Passing the view model to the methods called by Q resolved the problem.

  Hey, could you please share your way of unit testing in eclipse ? Are you using surefire plugin, m2eclipse & maven, or only testNG eclipse plugin ? Do you combine these alternatives ? I'm using testNG + maven surefire-plugin and I had been using the testNG eclipse plugin a year ago so that I could see the results in testNG view. Then I started using Maven, but when I do "maven test phase" using m2eclipse, there is only console output and surefire reports that I can check in browser and to choose what test suite, test, or test method can be set up only via testng.xml. On the other hand, if you use only surefire plugin and you have some specific settings regarding classpath etc., that you rely on, then running tests via testNG eclipse plugin doesn't have to be compatible with your code. Using surefire plugin, the classpath is different - target/test-classes and target/classes - than using testNG plugin, that is using the project classpath. How do you go about what I was just talking about? Is it possible to synchronize "maven test" using m2eclipse and surefire plugin WITH testNG eclipse plugin and view ? EDITED: I'm also wondering, why the Maven project ("Java build path") output folder is target/classes for src/main and src/test whereas surefire plugin makes two locations target/test-classes and target/classes Thank you very much for your your opinions.

• The "correct" way to define an exception in Python without PyLint complaining

  I'm trying to define my own (very simple) exception class in Python 2.6, but no matter how I do it I get some warning. First, the simplest way: class MyException(Exception): pass This works, but prints out a warning at runtime: DeprecationWarning: BaseException.message has been deprecated as of Python 2.6 OK, so that's not the way. I then tried: class MyException(Exception): def __init__(self, message): self.message = message This also works, but PyLint reports a warning: W0231: MyException.__init__: __init__ method from base class 'Exception' is not called. So I tried calling it: class MyException(Exception): def __init__(self, message): super(Exception, self).__init__(message) self.message = message This works, too! But now PyLint reports an error: E1003: MyException.__init__: Bad first argument 'Exception' given to super class How the hell do I do such a simple thing without any warnings?

• Fiscal year, quarters, student table, and faculty table... How do I relate these?!

  I have a student and faculty table. The primary key for student is studendID (SID) and faculty's primary key is facultyID, naturally. Student has an advisor column and a requested advisor column, which are foreign key to faculty. That's simple enough, right? However, now I have to throw in dates. I want to be able to view who their advisor was for a certain quarter (such as 2009 Winter) and who they had requested. The result will be a table like this: Year | Term | SID | Current | Requested ------------------------------------------------ 2009 | Winter | 860123456 | 1 | NULL 2009 | Winter | 860445566 | 3 | NULL 2009 | Winter | 860369147 | 5 | 1 And then if I feel like it, I could also go ahead and view a different year and a different term. I am not sure how these new table(s) will look like. Will there be a year table with three columns that are Fall, Spring and Winter? And what will the Fall, Spring, Winter table have? I am new to the art of tables, so this is baffling me... Also, I feel I should clarify how the site works so far now. Admin can approve student requests, and what happens is that the student's current advisor gets overwritten with their request. However, I think I should not do that anymore, right?

• Loading a helper elsewhere than the autoload.php?

  I inherited a project and I'm cleaning up a bit and trying to finish it. I noticed that they used (or wrote) a breadcrumb helper. It is in my helpers folder and is named breadcrumb_helper.php It has a single function to build a breadcrumb menu with links and pass it to the view breadcrumbs.php. Here's the code: function show_breadcrumbs() { $ci =& get_instance(); $ci->load->helper('inflector'); $data = ''; //build breadcrumb and store in $data $this->load->view("breadcrumbs", $data) } I was trying to figure out how this helper worked and I checked the autoload.php but there is no reference to the helper in there. In face here is my autoload: $autoload['helper'] = array('url','asset','combine','navigation','form','portfolio','cookie','default'); This show_breadcrumbs() function is used quite a bit in some of my pages so I'm confused as to how its loading if it isn't in the autoloader. It is called like this in a few of my pages: <?=show_breadcrumbs()?> What am I missing? Why isn't this in my autoload? I even did a global search and couldn't find anywhere the helper is being loaded.

  From what I understood I can use pattern-matching in a match ... with expression with tuples of values, so something like match b with ("<", val) -> if v < val then true else false | ("<=", val) -> if v <= val then true else false should be correct but it gives me a syntax error as if the parenthesis couldn't be used: File "ocaml.ml", line 41, characters 14-17: Error: Syntax error: ')' expected File "ocaml.ml", line 41, characters 8-9: Error: This '(' might be unmatched referring on first match clause.. Apart from that, can I avoid matching strings and applying comparisons using a sort of eval of the string? Or using directly the comparison operator as the first element of the tuple?

• Retrieving and displaying a contact name from a contact id while using a SimpleCursorAdapter

  I am storing information on the phone's contacts using a sqlite database. The fields I am storing are: _id, contact_id, body where _id is the row's id, contact_id is the phone contact's id and body is just a simple text which is the actual information I am storing. I'm using a SimpleCursorAdapter to map the data to the view, like so: Cursor cursor = database.fetchInformation(); // fetch info from DB String[] from = new String[] { CONTACT_ID, BODY }; int[] to = new int[] { R.id.contact, R.id.body }; SimpleCursorAdapter adapter = new SimpleCursorAdapter(this, R.layout.row, cursor, from, to); getListView().setAdapter(adapter); What I would actually want is to get the contact name that is associated with this CONTACT_ID, and have that be shown in the view. I can't seem to find a simple solution. I've tried implementing my own SimpleCursorAdapter and rewriting setViewText(TextView, String) but it didn't work. • Nerd Dinner tutorial question (can't pull data off Model)

  I am just following the tutorial about NerdDinner and was stuck because when I am implementing the "Index" View Template I got no data from it. It seems that when I loop around in the code below: <asp:Content ID="Title" ContentPlaceHolderID="TitleContent" runat="server"> Upcoming Dinners </asp:Content> <asp:Content ID="Main" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContent" runat="server"> <h2>Upcoming Dinners</h2> <ul> <% foreach (var dinner in Model) { %> <li> <%=Html.ActionLink(dinner.Title, "Details", new { id=dinner.DinnerID }) %> on <%=Html.Encode(dinner.EventDate.ToShortDateString())%> @ <%=Html.Encode(dinner.EventDate.ToShortTimeString())%> </li> <% } %> </ul> </asp:Content> There seems to be nothing in the Model... why is this? I am pretty sure there's data in the database because the details view template worked. FYI I am following the tutorial up to this page

• Intent provided by Cursor is not fired correctly (LiveFolders)

  In my desperation with trying to get LiveFolders working, I have tried the following in my LiveFolder ContentProvider: public Cursor query(Uri uri, String[] projection, String selection, String[] selectionArgs, String sortOrder) { MatrixCursor mc = new MatrixCursor(new String[] { LiveFolders._ID, LiveFolders.NAME, LiveFolders.INTENT } ); Intent i = null; for (int j=0; j < 5; j++) { i = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, Uri.parse("http://www.google.com/")); mc.addRow(new Object[] { j, "hello", i} ); } return mc; } Which, in all normalness, should launch the Browser and display the Google homepage when clicking on an item in the LiveFolder. But it doesn't. It gives a Application is not installed on your phone error. No, I'm not defining a base intent for my LiveFolder. logcat says: I/ActivityManager( 74): Starting activity: Intent { act=android.intent.action.VIEW dat=Intent { act=android.intent.action.VIEW dat=http://www.google.com/ } flg=0x10000000 } It seems it embeds the Intent I give it in the data section of the actually fired Intent. Why is it doing this? I'm really starting to believe it's a platform bug.
