• How to upload file via the JSON interface in Rails

  Hi, I have a web service in Rails which among all else should provide file upload functionality to the clients. The clients all use JSON to talk to the webservice. I use the Paperclip plugin for upload management. The problem is I do not know how to upload a file via JSON. All works in the web formular, but I cannot find information on how to consctruct my JSON Request to send files to the server. Can somebody help out? Regards, Angel Kafazov

• How can I get to the value of my WPF UserControl DependencyProperty from UI Automation Framework?

  Hi, I'm having trouble getting access to my WPF UserControl DependencyProperty values through the UI Automation Framework. I've used James McCaffreys article in MSDN as a starting point (Automating IO Tests in WPF Applications, MSDN March 2009), but I can only see properties etc in standard controls such as buttons. I'm assuming there's some Automation interface I have to implement on my UserControl, but what and how? I can already see my control fine e.g. in UISpy, but I can't see the dependency properties within it.   Hello. I'm trying to show a map using postGIS+Mapserver.And I've displayed a PNG picture in my WEB. However, I want to show some charactors in the map, just like this: this is the example from Mapserver Now I'm using database(postgreSQL), but not a shape file. How can I add the charactors then? • Problems with sp_addlinkedserver in MSSQL 2000

  Hi! I'm having a bit of a problem with moving specific data from one server running MSSQL 2000 (A) and another running MSSQL 2008 (B). I'm writing a script according to customer specifications which is to be executed on A, populating tables in B with data. However, I can't seem to get the server link to work. -- Bunch of declarations here EXEC sp_addlinkedserver @server = @ServerName, @srvproduct = @ServerProduct, @provider = @ProviderString, @datasrc = @RemoteHost -- Data migration stuff here EXEC sp_dropserver @ServerName Now if I run the script in its entirety I get an error saying: Msg 7202, Level 11, State 2, Line 55 Could not find server 'remoteServer' in sysservers. Execute sp_addlinkedserver to add the server to sysservers. However, if I higlight only the sp_addlinkedserver-part and execute that, there is no error and I can highlight the rest of the script and run it. What am I missing here? Please help! PS. If backup-restore was an option, I would have done that already.

• Powerpoint file can be deleted without consequence

  I am working on a license management type application that copies a password protected zip file to the applications root. The user clicks a button "Open Presentation" and the zipped file is extracted into the root folder and then I use the Office interop to open the file in Powerpoint. At this point to my surprise I am able to delete the extracted file that is currently open in the Powerpoint application. I had assumed that trying to delete the file would fail as the file is still open in Powerpoint. Why is it allowing me to delete the file? Is the file somehow copied to a temp folder and then opened in PowerPoint? Can I move forward with the application relying on this ability to delete the file as soon as it is opened in Powerpoint? This would be optimal because it helps insure that the file cannot be copied(I am also using the xml to stop "Save As" and "Save" from appearing int Powerpoint). Thanks for the insight, John

As my app is still in the planning process I would like to ask if there are any Issues with SQLlite database ? from memory management to Queries and data sizes and multiple access etc; Please share your experience using SQLite DB in iPhone and what problems did you face? • Is a class that is hard to unit test badly designed?

  I am now doing unit testing on an application which was written over the year, before I started to do unit-testing diligently. I realized that the classes I wrote are hard to unit test, for the following reasons: Relies on loading data from database. Which means I have to setup a row in the table just to run the unit test (and I am not testing database capabilities). Requires a lot of other external classes just to get the class I am testing to its initial state. On the whole, there don't seem to be anything wrong with the design except that it is too tightly coupled (which by itself is a bad thing). I figure that if I have written automated test cases with each of the class, hence ensuring that I don't heap extra dependencies or coupling for the class to work, the class might be better designed. Does this reason holds water? What are your experiences?

  I have a mediaOutput tag which, in its createContent attribute, requires the backing bean to be in a certain state. A list of values, which is filled in an init method, must be available. I therefore added a keepAlive tag for the whole backing bean. I now indeed see the backingBean in stead of some (richfaces) proxy bean, but the filled list is null again. How to make this possible? • View bound to paged collection view not updating all of the time.

  I new to silverlight and trying to make a business application using the mvvm pattern and ria services. I have a view model class that contains a PagedCollectoinView and it is set to the item source of a datagrid. When I update the PagedCollectionView the datagrid is only updated the first time then after that subsequent changes to the data to not reflect in the view until after another edit. Things seem to be delayed one edit. Below is a summarized example of my xaml and code behind. • Hudson can't find local maven repository (including 3rd party jars)

  Hi all, I have created a Maven2 project. Everything works fine. Now, I have set up a Hudson project in order to make nightly builds possible. Hudson should check out the current project state from a Subversion repository, run the tests, build the project and deploy everyting to a repository. My Subversion repositroy contains my Maven2 project but no jars located in my local Maven repository (.m2). That's probably why hudson finishes with a failure, saying that some 3rd party jars are't available. Here, I have to say that there are some jars in my local Maven repository (.m2), which aren't available in any Maven repositories. Hence, there is no possibility to download these jars. Has Hudson the ability to connect to the local .m2 repository? Or is there another way to make these jar files available to Hudson? Thanks a million in advance for your help.

• T-SQL error object exists when separated in if/else blocks

  I get the error: Msg 2714, Level 16, State 1, Line 16 There is already an object named '#mytemptable' in the database. There are ways around it, but wonder why this happens. • Why do Java/C# edge out C++ as the recommended language to learn OOP on S.O?

  I noticed after reading the answers/discussion to this question (What is the best language to learn OOP on?) - that more and more people are recommending C# or Java over C++ to learn OOP on. A simple term search on that answer page results in 10 hits for C++, 21 for C# and 27 for Java. Now, I understand that these 2 languages fix a lot of quirks and issues with C++, and looked up these resources that relate mostly to performance, JVM vs native implementation, systems focus vs applications, manual memory management vs automated et al. My question is - are there any fundamental differences in the OO capabilities of Java/C# vs C++? Or are the former recommended purely due to their generic ease of use/improvements over the latter? Thanks. PS, I'm aware of Java interface inheritance vs C++ multiple inheritance as a difference. I would consider that an implementational one rather than functional.

And Garbage Collection is very expensive. Still we can have destructor along with garbage collector where developer can free resources and which can save garbage collector's work. This might improves the performance of application. Why does Java not provide any destructor kind of mechanism? Developer does not have control over GC but he/she can control or create object. Then why not give them ability to destruct the objects?

  I have a question about memory management when using the addObjectsFromArray method. Basically, I have 2 arrays defined in the appDelegate. I need these 2 arrays for the duration of my application's runtime. I therefore release them in my appDelegate's dealloc method. When I go to use these two arrays in a class, I want one array to store the values from the other, so that the other can have it's contents removed, but still stick around for use. Something like this: [appDelegate.arrayTwo addObjectsFromArray:appDelegate.arrayOne]; [appDelegate.arrayOne removeAllObjects]; I'm getting the compiler error: EXC_BAD_ACCESS because of a pointer issue? retaining issue? • Is it ok to Swallow SocketExceptions in some situations? (C#)

  Let's say I've programmed an application which connects to a server using the Socket Class (TCP). If I encounter a SocketException while reading or writing, then obviously I have to do go ahead and run a disconnection routine to change the application's state to Disconnected. But what if I've started to Disconnect, and while I'm cleaning up, a SocketException occurs? The SocketException doesn't really mean anything to me, as I was going to shutdown the socket myself anyway.. so is it ok to swallow it? I really want to know what the best practice for this situation is.

• Colors in Instruments when hunting down memory leaks

  Hi I'm currently hunting down a memory leak in my app for iPhone. I'm using Instruments to track down the code that is causing the leak (becoming more and more a friend of Instruments!). Now Instruments show two lines: one in dark blue (row 146) and one in a lighter blue (150). From some trial and error I get that they are connected somehow, but not good enough at Objective-C and Memory Management yet to really understand how. Does anyone know why different colors are used and what could be my problem? I have tried to release numberForArray but the the app crashes when showing the last line in a picker view. All ideas appreciated! (Posting this I also realize that line 139 is redundant! Se there, already an improvement ;-)

• Distinguish UI change to variable from code-behind change

  Like the title says I am trying to architecture into my application a way to distinguish the source of a variable change, either from UI or code-behind. My problem is that I need to trigger some action after a property changed its value, but I only need to do this when the change comes from the UI because otherwise I don-t want to perform that action. I am having some trouble because, for example when a checkbox(two way binding), changes state, my binded property gets updated and then I use the checked and uncheked events to trigger that action.The problem is that when I change the property in codebehind it also triggers those events and I do not want that. Right now, i am using a flag that enables, or not, the actions at the event handlers but I do not feel that this is a good idea. Any sugestions or ideas? I am considering using only one-way binding and control everything my self, using commands.

I read about Netlink implementation for userspace-kernelspace communication and it seems its a good idea but not sure if it is the best solution. But I read that the UDEV device manager uses Netlink to wait a "uevent" from the kernel space but it is not clear for me how to do that. I read about polling sysfs but it seems it is not a good idea to poll filesystem. What do you think the implementation that should I use in my service? Should I use netlink(hard/no clue how to) or just polling the sysfs(not sure if it works)? Thanks
