• Administrator user session only shows a terminal

  Weird problem: After upgrading to 11.10 (and I am sure that I worked with it for couple of days). We had a power failure, and now, when open the computer, what I get is a screen, with a scrollable list of users (administrator is one of them). When I select the administrator user, and login, I get on the top left a terminal window. That's it ! I don't see my regular ubuntu desktop. What's wrong? I have tried some of the issues mentioned here: Delete the .Xauthority sudo apt-get update *I had some DNS errors, so had to fic my /etc/resolv.config (works now) please advise.

• How do I find fun companies?

  When looking for jobs, I'm not sure how to determine whether the company is fun to work for or not. I want to work in companies that are open, innovative, and make a good contribution to the world of computer science. For example, Dropbox looks like a very fun company and its existence is very important. How do I spot this in job advertisements? EDIT: I should note that I live in Australia, so many of the fun companies that I know does not have any office here. I know only a handful of fun companies in Australia – including Google in Sydney. But I don't know that many.

• Launcher disappears when Focuswriter is minimized

  This bug has to do with the integration of the full-screen writing app Focuswriter within Unity. It appeared before I upgraded from Ubuntu 12.04 to 12.10 - probably caused by a an automatically upgraded change that persist in 12.10: When I minimize Focuswriter after it has been in full-screen mode the launcher is invisible - instead of seeing it I just see a rectangle the color of my desktop background where it should have been. The launcher becomes visible if I click the area once but then I'm likely to hit an icon and unwillingly open a program. I've reported the bug to the developer of the program here: https://github.com/gottcode/focuswriter/issues/101 He has labeled the bug "upstream" saying that the bug is can only be fixed in Unity. My questions are: 1) does anyone (perhaps experiencing problems with other full-screen programs) have a solution or workaround so the launcher won't disappear? 2) where can I file a bug report for this problem?

• How to repeat a POST request using Chrome's developer tools?

  Not sure if this is the right stack exchange to ask this, but here goes... I'm trying to wean myself off of Firebug, which has served me very well for a lot of years. One feature that seems to be missing in Chrome's dev tools is the ability to repeat an AJAX POST. In firebug I can right click on the request in the console and hit "Open in new tab" and the request is repeated exactly as it was originally sent. In Chrome, the same action just does a normal GET on the link, without any of the post data. Is there any way to repeat an AJAX POST in Chrome's dev tools?

Analysis: This caused Internet Information Services (IIS) to assume that the worker process had stopped responding. Therefore, IIS terminated the worker process. Solution: 1. Open IIS manager. 2.Click application Pools>>select the application pool associated with the site>>and click Advanced Settings 3. Click Advanced Settings of the application pool and set the Ping Enabled property from True to False. Now, reattach the process from Visual Studio, you should not get the error message. An email id will be registered and their finger print(unique for everyone) will be stored on our server.Person A and Person B are already registered and have installed the app.A and B deposit some money through our app from their credit card. When a person(Person A) want to send money to other people(person B), person B will ask person A to authorize his/her finger print on person B's mobile.The finger print will be retrieved from our servers and the payment will be made to person B. Person A will open the app (later or at that time) and confirm that yes he/she has authorized his/her finger print for the transaction.If person A has actually done the transaction,no problem.If person A has unknowingly or forcibly and opts that he/she has not authorized his/her finger print,money will be deducted from person B's account. • I want to try and find an RFC for Business Listings.

  I'm trying to figure out how to find out if there's a good standard format for sharing business information such as: Business Name Address - well-defined fields Lat,Lng Coords Business Type - maybe from a well-defined enum, my starting point contains Retail,Food,Drink,Coffee,Service Hours of operation - including a spot for 'except laksdasd' or 'sometimes we open late' which could be just plain language Business Keywords - don't know if this is asking too much. how well do http meta tags work in practice? So, if no such thing exists, is this something I can submit to IETF? I can't currently find it on http://www.rfc-editor.org/cgi-bin/rfcsearch.pl , and vCard doesn't suit my needs.. Thanks!

• Asterisk not playing custom sounds on Ubuntu Server 11.04

  I've installed Asterisk on my Ubuntu Server, all works fine, excepts playing the custom sounds. Asterisk sounds work, but this file I've uploaded does not play (on other servers it works, it is a .WAV PCM 16bit 8000). • Does connection pooling work fine to execute 60 DB queries to load a page?

  We use Linq2Sql in an ASP.NET application. Unfortunately the eager-loading in Linq2Sql isn't as powerful as in Entity Framework, so a lot of the data has to be lazy loaded as needed. Taking connection pooling into account, is it OK for a web page to execute 60 queries to load a page? Executing a single big query probably won't be much better, as those 60 queries will all those connection pooled connections and not open a new connection each time (which I realize is slow). Any thoughts?

• Issue in Webscrapping in C# : Downloading and parsing zipped text files

  I am writing an webscrapper, to do the download content from a website. Traversing to the website/URL, triggers the creation of a temporary URL. This new URL has a zipped text file. This zipped file is to be downloaded and parsed. I have written a scrapper in C# using WebClient and its function - DownloadFileAsync(). The zipped file is read from the designated location on a trapped DownloadFileCompleted event. My issue : The Windows 'Open/Save dialog is triggered". This requires user input and the automation is disrupted. Can you suggest a way to bypass the issue ? I am cool with rewriting the code using any alternate libraries. :) Thanks for reading,

  I am wondering what are the chances of a career shifter (mid 20's), who have maybe 3-6 months programming experience vs. younger fresh IT/Com Sci graduates. You see, even though I really love programming (Java/J2EE), but nobody gives me a feedback when I apply online. maybe because they preferred IT/ComSci graduates vs a career shifter like me.. So can you advice on how to improve my chance on being hired. How can i get a real-job programming experince if nobody is hiring me. I can make my own projects (working e-commerce site blah blah) but it is still different from the real job. And my codes are working but it still needs a lot of improvement and no one can tell me how to improve it because no one sees it (because I'm doing it alone?). • Slow Resume After suspend having chrome running with many tabs

  I usually use chrome and Firefox for browsing. I also open many tabs (around 40 in both some times). The problem I have occurs when I resume the PC after having suspended it: It takes from 2 to 5 minutes sometimes to just get back normally. Does this have to do with memory usage not properly resuming? Is it a bug in Chrome/Firefox or Ubuntu itself? Note that I just upgraded from 10.10 to 11.10 and I was having the problem on both releases, which makes me guess that it has to do with Ubuntu not resuming well if some memory-heavy apps were running before the suspend occured.

  I'm building an Android app and associated set of web services for uploading/downloading data. I need a basic (no frills) solution for account management (register, login, logout, verify credentials/token). What open source / third party solutions exist for this scenario? I need: create a new account db based on a salt simple web service to create a new account simple web service to authenticate supplied credentials and return some sort of token That's it, I can get by without 'fancy' email activation or password reset for the time being. Are there off-the-shelf components for this? Should I just use a 'blank' django or rails app to get this done? Seems crazy for everyone to be doing CREATE TABLE user_accounts ... Thoughts? • Sync ERROR!! LOST MY WORK!

  Sorry my English... hope you understand me... I had a document. Edited it yesterday. But today, when i open it, it was desync. It show an one month earlier version!! I LOST A LOT OF WORK!! And i can't recover my right version of the document! I have a paid plan for Ubuntu One, but this made me very angry. And i don't see a way to recover and don't see a way to talk to somebody! There's no recovery mode like Dropbox... Man, i'm really ANGRY!! REALLY! I'll not recomend Ubuntu One services anymore! I don't know what to do... I lost my work and now i'm one month late! • Qualifying 'happiness' in software development?

  It occurred to me today that often the real goal of questions asked on sites such as this one (where the questions tend to be more open-ended than say, SO) is for the OP to become happier upon achieving the result. We often excuse this by saying our desire is to be more productive or release a better product, but if you continue to look down this path you can determine that the OP seeks greater productivity or product-quality because those are important to his/her 'happiness'. With that in-mind I ask this: Have their been efforts to study software development from this perspective? In other words, what practises increase happiness in those who develop software as a career, and who, if anyone, has researched this specifically? As I mentioned above, they may include strategies that increase productivity or improve product quality, but by no means should they be limited to just those.

• Xubuntu all Icons disappeared

  I'm running Xubuntu 12.04.1 with kernel Xen4.1-amd64 and the following problem is mine: Nearly all icons have been replaced by the default "no icon available"-icon, even on the login screen and the all icons in software like e.g. Firefox and the icons I manually assigned to launchers, too. Changing the icon theme does not seem to affect this. The only icons that did not disappear are: LibreOffice, gThumb, Simplescan, Ristretto and in the XFCE menu office, tools and graphics. How could I bring the icons back? EDIT: When I tried to use Ristretto the following error showed up: Could not load image-loader module /usr/lib/x68_64-linux-gnu/gdk-pixbuf-2.0/2.12.0/loaders/libpixbufloader-png.so Unable to open shared-object-file I/O error (Had to translate this to English.)

• Broke my sudoers password, how do I reset it without using sudo?

  I thought it would be a good idea to finally take the password off my little netbook since it has never actually been of any use, and has mostly just slowed down . But when I went to change my password, there wasn't even an option to make it blank, and any attempt to make it a few easy characters was met with "Password too weak". So I did what any good geek would do and popped open the terminal, read the manual entry for passwd and quickly used the -d option to remove the password from my account. It all went well for a couple days (I even managed to also make my keychain password blank) until I tried to update the thing. My sudoers password is not blank, and it's not my old password. I have no idea what it is. How do I reset it (or even better, make it blank) without the use of the sudo command?

• Clicking on active apps on unity launcher stopped working

  I don't know how it suddenly became this but here's what's happening right now: e.g. I have 2 firefox windows open, so I see 2 small arrows on the left side icon of the unity launcher. Before, when I click on the firefox icon, I see 2 small windows of the firefox so I can choose which one. Now it suddenly stopped working. (super+W still works though). The bug on my system applies to all progams with multiple window instances like nautilus, terminal, etc. Please help, I don't know what to do. I also have cairo dock, compiz, myunity installed in my 12.04. I tried searching online to no avail.

  first of all, I want to create shell script to start/stop downloads in torrent client. I don't need CLI but if you know how I can do that with CLI using shell script then it is okay.
