• Portletfaces Bridge, Null pointer exception

  I faced problem in Icefaces portlet using portletfaces bridge inside liferay. the problem is when I open the browser for the first time I got null pointer exception. for example i opened the portal through chrome browser then open firefox, my portlet I made in ICEfaces throw null pointer exception. below you will find full stack trace: java.lang.NullPointerException at • How to compress CSS/JS in VS2010 Web Deployment Build Template?

  Hi all, We've recently upgraded from VS2008 - VS2010 (and hence upgrading from Web Deployment Project to proper deployment project). Obviously what's new in VS2010 web deployments is the introduction of Workflow as the build process template. Previously, we used a MSBuild task in the WDP to execute the Yahoo YUI Javascript/CSS compression module to minify/compress javascript and css files. Has anyone managed to accomplish this task with Visual Studio 2010? I have seen the new "SquishIt" compressor created by Justin Etheridge, but its not ideal as it "squishes" on the fly (e.g on Application_Start - Global.ascx) - which means you still have to push out all the uncompressed files to your web server before squishing. In the Workflow designer - i can see a toolbox item called "MSBuild" - just dont know how to use it to accomplish what i want. Been searching high and wide, no-one seems to know how. Surely someone out there has done this.

• AJAX: how to get progress feedback in web apps, and to avoid timeouts on long requests?

  This is a general design question about how to make a web application that will receive a large amount of uploaded data, process it, and return a result, all without the dreaded spinning beach-ball for 5 minutes or a possible HTTP timeout. Here's the requirements: make a web form where you can upload a CSV file containing a list of URLs when the user clicks "submit", the server fetches the file, and checks each URL to see if its alive, and what the title tag of the page is. the result is a downloadable CSV file containing the URL, and the result HTTP code the input CSV can be very large ( 100000 rows), so the fetch process might take 5-30 minutes. My solution so far is to have a spinning javascript loop on the client site, which queries the server every second to determine the overall progress of the job. This seems kludgy to me, and I'm hesitant to accept this as the best solution. I'm using perl, template toolkit, and jquery, but any solution using any web technology would be acceptable.

• How can I return json from my WCF rest service (.NET 4), using Json.Net, without it being a string,

  The DataContractJsonSerializer is unable to handle many scenarios that Json.Net handles just fine when properly configured (specifically, cycles). A service method can either return a specific object type (in this case a DTO), in which case the DataContractJsonSerializer will be used, or I can have the method return a string, and do the serialization myself with Json.Net. The problem is that when I return a json string as opposed to an object, the json that is sent to the client is wrapped in quotes. Using DataContractJsonSerializer, returning a specific object type, the response is: {"Message":"Hello World"} Using Json.Net to return a json string, the response is: "{\"Message\":\"Hello World\"}" I do not want to have to eval() or JSON.parse() the result on the client, which is what I would have to do if the json comes back as a string, wrapped in quotes. I realize that the behavior is correct; it's just not what I want/need. I need the raw json; the behavior when the service method's return type is an object, not a string. So, how can I have my method return an object type, but not use the DataContractJsonSerializer? How can I tell it to use the Json.Net serializer instead? Or, is there someway to directly write to the response stream? So I can just return the raw json myself? Without the wrapping quotes?   Hello, When you issue the command ls in Linux you get this sort of thing: drwxr--r-- 1 fred editors 4096 drafts -rw-r--r-- 1 fred editors 30405 file1.php -r-xr-xr-x 1 fred fred 8460 file2.php I know that the rwxrwxrwx are the read, write and execute permissions for the current user. And I think I know that 'fred' is the user who owns the file. So I assume fred can write to file1 but no one else can. But what is the extra bit 'editors' and what is the difference between file1 and file2 with respect to one having an ownership of 'fred editors' and the other 'fred fred'? Also if a web user connects to one of the files, what is their user name and where is this decided? If the server decided that user connecting from the web was going to be fred, does this mean any web user could write to file1? Any information welcomed, I am resaerching this but just getting confused. Thanks

• How do I securely authenticate the calling assembly of a WCF service method?

  The current situation is as follows: We have an production .net 3.5 WCF service, used by several applications throughout the organization, over wsHttpBinding or netTcpBinding. User authentication is being done on the Transport level, using Windows integrated security. This service has a method Foo(string parameter), which can only be called by members of given AD groups. The string parameter is obligatory. A new client application has come into play (.net 3.5, C# console app), which eliminates the necessity of the string parameter. However, only calls from this particular application should be allowed to omit the string parameter. The identity of the caller of the client application should still be known by the server because the AD group limitation still applies (ruling out impersonation on the client side). I found a way to pass on the "evidence" of the calling (strong-named) assembly in the message headers, but this method is clearly not secure because the "evidence" can easily be spoofed. Also, CAS (code access security) seems like a possible solution, but I can't seem to figure out how to make use of CAS in this particular scenario. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to solve this issue? Edit: I found another thread on this subject; apparently the conclusion there is that it is simply impossible to implement in a secure fashion.

• How do you Access an Authenticated Google App Engine Service with Ruby?

  I am trying to do this same thing here but with Ruby: Access Authenticated GAE Client with Python. Any ideas how to retrieve authenticated content from GAE with Ruby? I am using the Ruby GData Gem to access everything in Google Docs and such and it's making life very easy, but now I'd like to access things on GAE that require admin access, programmatically, and it doesn't support that. I want to take those same applications and publish them in a different app domain under a different port, 8001. This way, clients can view my applications that's using port 8001 while I develop and compile my project on port 80. However, when I debug my application, it freezes both the web applications on both port 80 and 8001. How can I debug my application under port 80 without affecting the web applications under port 8001?

  Can a user connect to my web site using an Orkut account ? Just like Google Friend Connect or Facebook, but with Orkut. The idea is, the user goes to my web site, I have a "Connect using Orkut" button there, on click takes him to the Orkut login page, once s/he logins and grants access to my app, get's redirected to my web site with the Orkut ID as a parameter. The same procedure that works for Google Friend Connect and also Facebook Connect.... I haven't seen an example of this with Orkut. Can it be done ? Is there an Orkut Connect or similar ? If there is one such example could you please give me a link to it ? A sample in c# would be excellent, but I would be happy with a sample in any language. Any help will be appreciated

• Asp.NET custom templated datalist throws argument out of range (index) on button press

  I have a class BaseTemplate public abstract class BaseTemplate : ITemplate This adds the controls, and provides abstract methods to implement in the inheriting class. The inheriting class then adds its html according to its data source and manages the data binding. This all works fine - I get the control appearing with properly parsed html. The problem is that the base class adds controls into the template that have their own CommandName arguments; the idea is that the class that implements the custom templated dataList will provide the logic of setting the Selected and Edit Indexes. This class also manages the data binding, etc. It sets all of the templates on the datalist in the Init method (which was another cause of this exception). The exception gets thrown when I hit one of these buttons - I have tried hooking up both their click and command events everywhere in case this was the problem. I have also ensured that their command names do not match any of the system ones. The stack trace does not include any references to my methods or objects which is why I am so stuck. It is the most unhelpful message I can imagine. The really frustrating thing is that I cannot get a breakpoint to fire - i.e. the problem is happening after I click the button, but before and of my code can execute. The last time this exception happened was when I had this code in a user control and was assigning the templates to the datalist in the PageLoad. I moved these into init to fix that problem; however, this is a problem that was there then and I have no idea what is causing it let alone how to solve it (and index out of range doesn't really help without knowing what index.) • Why are error pages ignored in RESTEasy web service running on Tomcat?

  I'm developing a REST-ful web service using RESTEasy deployed on Tomcat. I've configured an error page which takes the exception's message and generates an XML based on it when any exception occurs during the request. This works fine for any application generated exceptions. However, if client sends an invalid XML which cannot be unmarshalled correctly, an javax.xml.bind.UnmarshalException is thrown and Tomcat's default error page is used instead of mine. I have configured my error page to the error-code 500 in web.xml. Is using error pages the correct way to handle errors when using RESTEasy or is there an alternative way?

• Writing a Web Application in hAxe without Apache and PHP?

  hAxe has Apache httpd modules and can compile to PHP code. These are 2 options I know to make a web application that runs on the server. You can start a http server with nekotools, but this is supposed to be used for development only. Are there any more options? I can always use the NekoVM from within a C or C++ program, running a web server or interfacing to FastCGI. Or compile to C++, using a FastCGI or web server library. But I want to hear about solutions that are actually used. I have a VPS with nginx, so no mod_neko or mod_tora. PHP isn't a problem, but I'd rather wouldn't use it (for irrational reasons).

  According to MSDN, for deploying custom web service, we need to create *wsdl.aspx and *disco.aspx files, and put them with .asmx together under _vti_bin folder (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\isapi). And put the dll under bin folder of the root of sharepoint virtual directory. It works correctly for me. However, i also found that if i put .asmx file under the root virtual directory without creating those *wsdl.aspx and *disco.aspx files. It can work as well and much easier than the above way. So i'm wondering what's the potential issues in this way?

  i have published asp.net mvc application on iis 6 on the server(windows server 2003) from local machine. On server i have set the default page to default.aspx. but when i try to browse the site on server, it gives me exception "The incoming request does not match any route" One thing i noticed is that. • Why does ASP.NET web site reference assembly from GAC, when adding local reference?

  When you use ASP.NET web site (instead of web application model) and add reference to an assembly from local folder, Visual Studio, it seems, understands that this local assembly is also in GAC and so does NOT copy this assembly to bin folder (as it does with non-GAC assemblies), but simply adds new record in web.config file. Why such a behaviour? Is it possible to force copy to bin folder (I need this since .dll is not on target environment)? I can add assembly to bin folder as file and it will work, but in this case bin folder contents will be in source control, which is not good.

  I am building a web application in which I would like to include the user's LinkedIn profile page feeds. Is this possible? What I envision is the user comes to the web application and adds the complete URL for their Linked user profile in a text box and I would get the feeds for that user page. Would it be possible to do this with jquery? Or should I be looking at some other tool? I trying to make it more clear, I want to create a widget kinda of app for my web app where user enters a complete url of the linkedin user profile page and I have to retrieve the feeds of that particular user and display it. It should be dynamic in nature, if another user enters a another url into the text box I should be able to get the feeds from that particular user profile page.

• Should I commit WEB-INF into version control, or rather construct it with ant?

  ant "war" task does just that - creates WEB-INF along with META-INF, depending on task attributes. what is considered a best practice? keeping all my libs elsewhere for re-use, like log4j and then build them with "war" task or have everything (including jars) checked-in under WEB-INF? I have multiple apps that could re-use same libs, images, htmls, etc. Our developers use RAD7/Eclipse. I'd appreciate any examples with opensource Java Web Apps repo layouts. thanks!

• How can I build against Microsoft.Web.Administration (IIS 7.x) on a Windows 2003 build machine?

  Hi, I am writing a C# config app for (amongst other things) setting up websites. It's only required to support IIS 7.x (Windows 2008 / 2008 R2), and requiring the compatibility pack is a no-no, so I figured I'd just use the Microsoft.Web.Administration namespace. However, the only place I can find the assembly that contains this namespace (Microsoft.Web.Administration.dll) is from the IIS 7.x installation folder, and our main build machines are Windows 2003 and so cannot install IIS 7.x. One option is to mandate a 2008 build machine but we currently only have one so that's not ideal. We've already ruled out appcmd.exe. The other option is to make a package consisting of the dlls necessary to build against Microsoft.Web.Administration.dll. Has anyone tried that? Is there such a package already in existence, hidden somewhere on the MS download site? Thanks in advance.

• Close TCP connection when owner process is already killed

  I have a Windows service that - when it starts - opens some WCF services to listen on the 8000 port. It happens that this service crashes sometimes. When it does, the TCP connection is not released, thus causing my service to throw an exception if I try to start it again: AddressAlreadyInUseException: There is already a listener on IP endpoint 0.0.0.0:8000 Some observations: When running CurrPorts or netstat -ano, I can see that the 8000 port is still in use (in LISTENING state) and is owned by the Process ID XXX that corresponded to my service process ID. But my service has already crashed, and does not appear in the Task Manager anymore. Thus I can't kill the process to free the port! Of course, running taskkill /PID XXX returns: ERROR: The process "XXX" not found. When running CurrPorts or netstat -b, I can see that the process name involved in creating the listening port is System, and not as MyService.exe (whereas it is MyService.exe when my service is running). I tried to use CurrPorts to close the connection, but I always get the following error message: Failed to close one or more TCP connections. Be aware that you must run this tool as admin in order to close TCP connections. (Useless to say, I do run CurrPorts as Administrator...) TCPView is not much help either: the process name associated to the 8000 port is <non-existent>, and doing "End process" or "Close connection" has no effect. I tried to see if there was not a child process associated with the PID XXX using Process Explorer, but no luck here. If I close my service properly (before it crashes), the TCP connection is correctly released. This is normal, as I close the WCF service hosts in the OnStop() event of my service. The only way I found to release the connection is to restart the server (which is not convenient in a production environment as you can guess). Waiting does not help, the TCP connection is never released. How can I close the connection without restarting the Windows server? PS: found some questions extremely similar to mine.

• Avoid hourglass mouse cursor when calling a web-service?

  I don't know if this is a general web-services issue or just my specific scenario, which is a WPF application with a DispatcherTimer calling a web-service method. Whenever the timer is called, the mouse cursor automatically changes to an hourglass cursor. The processing of the call is very short and happens every 3 seconds, so the user experience is that every 3 seconds the mouse filckers as an hourglass for a split-second and then goes back to the normal cursor representation. How can I avoid this inconvenience? Thanks.

• Calling services from the Orchestrating layer in SOA?

  The Service Oriented Architecture Principles site says that Service Composition is an important thing in SOA. But Service Loose Coupling is important as well. Does that mean that the "Orchestrating layer" should be the only one that is allowed to make calls to services in the system? As I understand SOA, the "Orchestrating layer" 'glues' all the services together into one software application. I tried to depict that on Fig.A and Fig.B. The difference between the two is that on Fig.A the application is composed of services and all the logic is done in the "Orchestrating layer" (all calls to services are done from the "Orchestrating layer" only). On Fig.B the application is composed from services, but one service calls another service. Does the architecture on Fig.B violate the "Service Loose Coupling" principle of SOA? Can a service call another service in SOA? And more generally, can the architecture on Fig.A be considered superior to the one on Fig.B in terms of service loose coupling, abstraction, reusability, autonomy, etc.? My guess is that the A architecture is much more universal, but it can add some unnecessary data transfers between the "Orchestrating layer" and all the called services.
