• inetd / xinetd not working under cygwin

  I am trying to use xinetd (or inetd) with netcat to act as a TCP proxy. This setup works on Linux without issue. Under Cygwin, either as a service or from the a Cygwin command line, the (x)inetd fails to open netcat, with the error "no such file or directory". I have tried specifying /usr/bin/nc, /usr/bin/nc.exe, /cygdrive/d/cygwin/usr/bin/nc.exe, d:\cygwin\bin\nc.exe, and a TON of other combinations of forward flashes, backslashes, Windows paths and Cygwin paths. No matter what, I get errno 2, no such file or dir. Any ideas? I need this working ASAP. Edit: I thought it may have to do with it being in d:\cygwin (lame hardcoding?) but I tested it on a machine with cygwin on C:\, problem exists there too.

• Enabling media streaming from a removable drive using Windows Media Player

  I have Windows Media Player set up to stream video to several devices in my apartment. I had recently run out of space so I purchased an external drive to store my videos/music etc. I can add the media to my WMP library and play it locally without issue. As soon as I try to access the media from another device that supports media streaming (Media player or another PC) only the media stored on a fixed drive is available. Is there a way to enable media sharing from a removable drive or somehow trick WMP that the media is stored on a fixed drive? I tried setting up a SymLink linking a directory on the fixed drive to the removable one but with the same result.

• Why is gcc failing with "unrecognized command line option "-L/lusr/opt/mpfr-2.4.2/lib" "?

  My sysadmin recently installed a new version of GCC, in /lusr/opt/gcc-4.4.3. I tested it as follows: mike@canon:~$ cat test.c int main(){ return 0; } mike@canon:~$ gcc test.c /lusr/opt/gcc-4.4.3/libexec/gcc/i686-pc-linux-gnu/4.4.3/cc1: error while loading shared libraries: libmpfr.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory After informing my sysadmin about this, he said to add /lusr/opt/mpfr-2.4.2/lib:/lusr/opt/gmp-4.3.2/lib to my LD_LIBRARY_PATH. After doing this, I get the following error: mike@canon:~$ gcc test.c cc1: error: unrecognized command line option "-L/lusr/opt/mpfr-2.4.2/lib" First, my sysadmin wasn't entirely sure this was the best workaround(though he did say it worked for him...), so is there a better solution? Second, why am I getting a linker error from cc, and how can I fix it? • Windows - Use Local Service and/or Network Service account for a windows service

  I've created a window's service that monitors files on a specific directory on our Windows OS. When a file is detected, the service does some file I/O, reads the files, creates sub-directories, etc. This service also uses database connectivity to connect to another server. My plan is to have the service run as the default "Local Service" account. Since I need to allow write/read privileges, which apparently the "Local Service" account does not do by default, I'm going to explicitly set "Full Control" privileges for the "Local Service" account on the folder that I'm reading/writing to and from. I believe the above is a good . My question is, for the folder that I'm reading and writing to, do I need to setup a "Network Service" role with full control access? I'm wondering since my service uses database connectivity to another server, if I'll need the "Network Service" account setup. I may be misunderstanding what the "Network Service" account does.

• mod_fcgid: stderr: PHP Fatal error with Plesk 11.5.30 and php-pear

  Just upgraded to Plesk 11.5.30 and found out that sending SMTP emails with php pear aren't working anymore with following error message: mod_fcgid: stderr: PHP Fatal error: require_once(): Failed opening required 'Mail.php' (include_path='.:/usr/share/pear') in /var/www/vhosts/mydomain.com/httpdocs/check.php on line 4 I know in the new Plesk 11.5 they changed the structure of all vhosts, but the strange thing is that require_once('System.php') placed into the same directory and file is working correctly with no errors and is returning bool(true). Any hints where I could have a look with this mod_fcgid error when require_once('System.php') is working but require_once('Mail.php') isn't working?

• The Low Down Dirty Azure Blues

  Remember the SETI screen savers that used to be on everyone's computer? As far I as know, it was the first bona-fide use of "Cloud" computing…albeit an ad hoc cloud. I still think it was a brilliant leveraging of computing power. My interest in clouds was re-piqued when I went to a technical seminar at the local .Net User Group. The speaker was Mike Benkovitch and he expounded magnificently on the virtues of the Azure platform. Mike always does a good job. One killer reason he gave for cloud computing is instant scalability. Not applicable for most applications, but it is there if needed. I have a bunch of files stored on Microsoft's SkyDrive platform which is cloud storage. It is painfully slow. Accessing a file means going through layers and layers of software, redirections and security. Am I complaining? Hell no! It's free! So my opinions of Cloud Computing are both skeptical and appreciative. What intrigued me at the seminar, in addition to its other features, is that Azure can serve as a web hosting platform. I have a client with an Asp.Net web site I developed who is not happy with the performance of their current hosting service. I checked the cost of Azure and since the site has low bandwidth/space requirements the cost would be competitive with the existing host provider: Azure Pricing Calculator. And, Azure has a three month free trial. Perfect! I could try moving the website and see how it works for free. I went through the signup process. Everything was proceeding fine until I went to the MS SQL database management screen. A popup window informed me that I needed to install Silverlight on my machine. Silverlight? No thanks. Buh-Bye. I half-heartedly found the Azure support button and logged a ticket telling them I didn't want Silverlight on my machine. Within 4 to 6 hours (and a myriad (5) of automated support emails) they sent me a link to a database management page that did not require Silverlight. Thanks! I was able to create a database immediately. One really nice feature was that after creating the database, I was given a list of connection strings. I went to the current host provider, made a backup of the database and saved it to my machine. I attached to the remote database using SQL Server Studio 2012 and looked for the Restore menu item. It was missing. So I tried using the SQL command: RESTORE DATABASE MyDatabase FROM DISK ='C:\temp\MyBackup.bak' Msg 40510, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Statement 'RESTORE DATABASE' is not supported in this version of SQL Server. Are you kidding me? Why on earth…? This can't be happening! I opened both the source database and destination database in SQL Management Studio. I right clicked the source database, selected "Tasks" and noticed a menu selection called "Deploy Database to SQL Azure" Are you kidding me? Could it be? Oh yes, it be! There was a small problem because the database already existed on the Azure machine, I deployed to a new name, deleted the existing database and renamed the deployed database to what I needed. It was ridiculously easy. Being able to attach SQL Management Studio to remote databases is an awesome but scary feature. You can limit the IP addresses that can access the database which enhances security but when you give people, any people, me included, that much power, one errant mouse click could bring a live system down. My Advice: Tread softly and carry a large backup thumb-drive. Then I created a web site, the URL it returned look something like this: http://MyWebSite.azurewebsites.net/ Azure supports FTP, but I couldn't figure out the settings until I downloaded the publishing profile. It was an XML file that contained the needed information. I still couldn't connect with my FTP client (FileZilla). After about an hour of messing around, I deleted the port number from the FileZilla setup page….and voila, I was in like Flynn.   There are other options of deploying directly from Visual Studio, TFS, etc. but I do not like integrated tools that do things without my asking: It's usually hard to figure out what they did and how to undo it. I uploaded the aspx , cs , webconfig, etc. files. Bu it didn't run. The site I ported was in .NET 3.5. The Azure website configuration page gave me a choice between .NET 2.0 and 4.0. So, I switched to Visual Studio 2010, chose .NET 4.0 and upgraded the site. Of course I have the original version completely backed up and stored in a granite cave beneath the Nevada desert. And I have a backup CD under my pillow. The site uses ReportViewer to generate PDF documents. Of course it was the wrong version. I removed the old references to version 9 and added new references to version 10 (*see note below). Since the DLLs were not on the Azure Server, I uploaded them to the bin directory, crossed my fingers, burned some incense and gave it a try. After some fiddling around it ran. I don't know if I did anything particular to make it work or it just needed time to sort things out. However, one critical feature didn't work: ReportViewer could not programmatically generate PDF documents. I was getting this exception: "An error occurred during local report processing. Parameter is not valid." Rats. I did some searching and found other people were having the same problem, so I added a post saying I was having the same problem: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsazurewebsitespreview/thread/b4a6eb43-0013-435f-9d11-00ee26a8d017 Currently they are looking into this problem and I am waiting for the results. Hence I had the time to write this BLOG entry. How lucky you are. This was the last message I got from the Microsoft person: Hi Steve, Windows Azure Web Sites is a multi-tenant environment. For security issue, we limited some API calls. Unfortunately, some GDI APIS required by the PDF converting function are in this list. We have noticed this issue, and still investigation the best way to go. At this moment, there is no news to share. Sorry about this. Will keep you posted. If I had to guess, I would say they are concerned with people uploading images and doing intensive graphics programming which would hog CPU time.  But that is just a guess. Another problem. While trying to resolve the ReportViewer problem, I tried to write a file to the PDF directory to see if there was a permissions problem with some test code: String MyPath = MapPath(@"~\PDFs\Test.txt"); File.WriteAllText(MyPath, "Hello Azure");     I got this message: Access to the path <my path> is denied. After some research, I understood that since Azure is a cloud based platform, it can't allow web applications to save files to local directories. The application could be moved or replicated as scaling occurs and trying to manage local files would be problematic to say the least. There are other options: Use the Azure APIs to get a path. That way the location of the storage is separated from the application. However, the web site is then tied Azure and can't be moved to another hosting platform. Use the ApplicationData folder (not recommended). Write to BLOB storage. Or, I could try and stream the PDF output directly to the email and not save a file. I'm not going to work on a final solution until the ReportViewer is fixed. I am just sharing some of the things you need to be aware of if you decide to use Azure. I got this information from here. (Note the author of the BLOG added a comment saying he has updated his entry). Is my memory faulty? While getting this BLOG ready, I tried to write the test file again. And it worked. My memory is incorrect, or much more likely, something changed on the server…perhaps while they are trying to get ReportViewer to work. (Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking to it). *Note: Since Visual Studio 2010 Express doesn't include a Report Editor, I downloaded and installed SQL Server Report Builder 2.0. • Error "403 Forbidden" on Sharepoint Search Settings Page

  Hello I thought I had solved this nightmare by re-entering the values in my SSP properties set up, however accessing the Search Settings page error has reared it ugly head again. Please guys how do I get around this access denied issue. Thanks

  I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 and I'm trying xvidcap to record a screencast with audio from the microphone, however it can't record any sound: $ xvidcap --file appo.avi --cap_geometry 700x500-0+0 Error accessing sound input from /dev/dsp Sound disabled! Sure enough /dev/dsp doesn't even exist: $ sudo ls -lh /dev/dsp ls: cannot access /dev/dsp: No such file or directory I found a blog post about fixing xvidcap sound input, however if I try the suggestion I get: $ sudo modprobe snd-pcm-oss FATAL: Module snd_pcm_oss not found. So the question is, how can I create /dev/dsp? The problem behind the problem is: how can I record sound from the microphone with xvidcap? So workarounds are welcome too. UPDATE: I've followed the suggestion of James, and something has improved. The error accessing /dev/dsp is gone, however now I get: [oss @ 0x8e0c120] Estimating duration from bitrate, this may be inaccurate xtoffmpeg.c add_audio_stream(): Can't initialize fifo for audio recording Now when I record xvidcap appears in the recording tab of pavucontrol and I can choose Audio stream from Internal Audio Analog Stereo or Monitor of Internal Audio Analog Stereo, I tried both just in case, but the video is still mute. UPDATE 2: I found that "Monitor of" is the one to record application sounds, while for microphone, I should choose "Internal Audio Analog Stereo". To rule out other problems, such as with the microphone, I tried with gnome-sound-recorder and it works. Actually I jumped on my chair, since the volume was too high! :-)

  For proxy services utilizing the JMS transport, OSB receives messages from destinations by using an MDB. These MDBs get generated and deployed during activation of the service configuration. OSB creates a random, unique name for the J2EE application that gets deployed to WLS. The name starts with “_ALSB_” and ends in a unique series of digits. The EAR files are written to the sbgen subdirectory of the domain home directory. You will see these applications on the WLS console page for “Deployments”. For various operational reasons, there are times when the application name for a given proxy service needs to be determined. Since the generated name of the application doesn’t reflect the name of the service, it becomes difficult to determine the relationship between the service and its EAR file. • Install Applications on OpenSUSE 11.2 w/ GNOME desktop

  Being new to OpenSUSE (v.11.2) and the GNOME desktop, I am somewhat at a loss. The differences between installing applications on Windows (formerly XP & Windows for the last 15+ years) seem to be just different enough that I am having some difficulty. For instance, how do I determine what install package I would download? Then, how do I actually install a tar.gz file or rpm, or whatever? I tried updating the Flash driver for my FoxTabs addon in FireFox but got an error that the /tmp/ directory wasn't to be used to run media, or something to that affect. So, I thought I would try to figure out first how to determine what file package to download, then how to install. I'm not sure that I need an OpenSUSE for Dummies type of link, but something that explicitly details differences in everyday operations and corresponding equivalents between Windows and OpenSUSE/GNOME. I'm also looking for a good IRC chat client.

  Robocopy is preinstalled with Windows 7. I've used it many times in the past. I tried to copy a folder to a remote share with robocopy c:\source "\\server\share\path" /s /r:2 /w:2` As a result I get permission denied. Using explorer I can copy files to this share. I've opened a command prompt with administrator permissions with the same result. The share is read/write for public. [EDIT] I've successfully mapped a driveletter to the share, but robocopy still fails EDIT I've added the /B switch without success. • Permission denied when using mv in Windows 7 Cygwin

  I have Cygwin installed on Windows 7 in a windows domain sign-on environment. I can run most typical commands without issue, but I cannot for the life of me use the "mv" command to move or rename files, regardless of the file or directory. I can copy and create files without issue. +-[12:27:57]-[mbutl2@MYHOSTNAME] +--> tmp $ >> pwd /tmp +-[12:27:58]-[mbutl2@MYHOSTNAME] +--> tmp $ >> touch test.txt +-[12:28:02]-[mbutl2@MYHOSTNAME] +--> tmp $ >> mv test.txt hello -bash: /usr/bin/mv: Permission denied I have already tried running Cygwin terminal as Administrator and the problem is the same. I'm open to workarounds, such as trying another exe for moving files and redirecting the mv command to it. Moving files works in the Windows Command Prompt.

• Creating Limited User Accounts on Ubuntu Server

  Using Ubuntu server, I need to create some user accounts that have the following limitations: (1) User may only view and manipulate files in their home directory. (2) User may only execute commands related to rsync and sftp. I want users to be able to backup files using rsync, and I want them to be able retrieve files using an sftp client like FileZilla. Other than this, I don't want users to be able to view other files on the system, or execute any commands that might mess with the system. I'm more of an Ubuntu Desktop user, and have very little experience administering a linux server. Most tutorials I've found assume I know things that I don't know. So I'm having difficulty setting this up.

• Administrator not an Administrator?

  I have copied some files from an XP computer to a PC running Windows 7. I am logged on as a user who is marked as an Administrator. When I try to access the directory, I am told I don't have permission. Understandable, but what is odd is that I as an administrator don't have access to take ownership of the files. I don't have permission to add users in the ACL or to take ownership, indeed such options are greyed out. Why as an administrator user can I not take ownership of files?

• Error while zipping files with unicode characters in names with Win7's "send to > compressed (zipped) folder"

  When I try to zip files containing unicode characters in their names, such as © or ™, I get the following error: [Window Title] Compressed (zipped) Folders Error [Content] 'C:\Asd™.txt' cannot be compressed because it includes characters that cannot be used in a compressed folder, such as ™. You should rename this file or directory. [OK] This only became a problem when I reinstalled Windows 7. I probably had some resources necessary from this error to be resolved automatically, but it's almost clean installation now and I can't zip files. How do I fix this? UPD: Some time passed since I posted this question, I installed some of my usual applications, but the problem still exists and I'm not sure if it can be fixed by installing some specific application from before.

• Find which config file Apache uses to find virtual host

  I have a rather complicated Apache setup: some config files have to be manually written and some have to be automatically generated. So far, I've had no problems. But now, I've just tried to set a site at: newsubdomain.mydomain.com and Apache directs it to the data for: www.someotherdomain.com I've looking into all the many config files and can't find anything wrong. All is pointing where it should and no definitions, as far as I can tell, overlap. So what I'm wondering is: is there a way to see which config files or config instructions Apache is using to match a URL to a directory? Tanks.

  Microsoft released an update for Windows 7 today: KB980408: The April 2010 stability and reliability update for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 is available. The update fixes, among other things: Windows Explorer may stop responding for 30 seconds when a file or a directory is created or renamed after certain applications are installed. i'm not experiencing it on my own Windows 7 machine, but two colleagues at work were experiencing the problem. i would really like to know what applications were causing problems. Microsoft will never call out the misbehaving applications. i want to know what software i should be ridiculing and insulting. And avoid in the future. Did anyone who was experiencing this problem isolate the applications?
