• Ubuntu installer does not show drives

  I am trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on my Inspiron laptio, but the installer does not show any drives. My system has a 1TB SATA drive and a 32GB SSD. As far as I can figure, the boot files are kept on the SSD for fast startup (for Windows). During Win7 installation, I had to manually load drivers for RAID controller to see all available drives. • Am I wrong to disagree with A Gentle Introduction to symfony's template best practices?

  I am currently learning symfony and going through the book A Gentle Introduction to symfony and came across this section in "Chapter 4: The Basics of Page Creation" on creating templates (or views): "If you need to execute some PHP code in the template, you should avoid using the usual PHP syntax, as shown in Listing 4-4. Instead, write your templates using the PHP alternative syntax, as shown in Listing 4-5, to keep the code understandable for non-PHP programmers." Listing 4-4 - The Usual PHP Syntax, Good for Actions, But Bad for Templates <p>Hello, world!</p> <?php if ($test) { echo "<p>".time()."</p>"; } ?> (The ironic thing about this is that the echo statement would look even better if time was a variable declared in the controller because then you could just embed the variable in the string instead of concatenating) Listing 4-5 - The Alternative PHP Syntax, Good for Templates <p>Hello, world!</p> <?php if ($test): ?> <p><?php echo time(); ?> </p><?php endif; ?> I fail to see how listing 4-5 makes the code "understandable for non-PHP programmers", and its readability is shaky at best. 4-4 looks much more readable to me. Are there any programmers who are using symfony that write their templates like those in 4-4 rather than 4-5? Are there reasons I should use one over the other? There is the very slim chance that somewhere down the road someone less technical could be editing it the template, but how does 4-5 actually make it more understandable to them?

• Acer Aspire One 725 - missing graphic card driver for Radeon HD 7290?

  Recently I bought an Acer Aspire One 725 Netbook and installed Ubuntu 12.10 on it. I bought it, because it can run HD movies and has Full HD on external VGA port. However, movies from youtube have a really slow framerate. If you open three tabs in Opera (for example g-mail, youtube and askubuntu) it gets really laggy. My suspicion is that the driver for graphic card is missing. When I check the System->Details->Graphics the driver is unknown. After running lspci | grep VGA I get this output: 00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Device 980a From what I see, I have a AMD C70 processor integrated with AMD Radeon HD 7290. Has anyone had the same problem? Do you know which drivers need to be installed for the graphics to work properly? On official Acer page there are only drivers for Win7 and Win8... Update: OK. Another attempt. I have a fresh Ubuntu 12.10. All updates done. downloaded Catalyst 12.11 beta drivers and decided to create a package. • wine 1.4 regedit makes screen flicker on 12.04 with dual monitor setup

  I have a dualmonitor setup running dual 23" on 1920x1080 which has the following problem: When running any wine application (for example "wine regedit" from console) the screen flickers and the windows have artifacts like this: Also sometimes taking a screenshot using the print key will make compiz crash (starter and all window bars/menus are gone) when an wine application is started. I don't have the same problems on my notebook which has the same setup. Only difference is the notebook has ATI Graphics and this PC has nvidia. Removing one screen from the setup will stop the flickering and the artifacts inside the wine applications from appearing. Does anybody have an advice what I could try to change to make this work?

  Up on otn/java is a very useful article by Oracle Java/Middleware/Core Tech Engineer Mark Heckler, titled, “How to Get Started (FAST!) with JavaFX 2 and Scene Builder.”  Heckler, who has development experience in numerous environments, shows developers how to develop a JavaFX application using Scene Builder “in less time than it takes to drink a cup of coffee, while learning your way around in the process”. He begins with a warning and a reassurance: “JavaFX is a new paradigm and can seem a bit imposing when you first take a look at it. But remember, JavaFX is easy and fun. Let's give it a try.” Next, after showing readers how to download and install JDK/JavaFX and Scene Builder, he informs the reader that they will “create a simple JavaFX application, create and modify a window using Scene Builder, and successfully test it in under 15 minutes.” Then readers download some NetBeans files:“EasyJavaFX.java contains the main application class. We won't do anything with this class for our example, as its primary purpose in life is to load the window definition code contained in the FXML file and then show the main stage/scene. You'll keep the JavaFX terms straight with ease if you relate them to the theater: a platform holds a stage, which contains scenes. SampleController.java is our controller class that provides the ‘brains’ behind the graphical interface. If you open the SampleController, you'll see that it includes a property and a method tagged with @FXML. This tag enables the integration of the visual controls and elements you define using Scene Builder, which are stored in an FXML (FX Markup Language) file. Sample.fxml is the definition file for our sample window. You can right-click and Edit the filename in the tree to view the underlying FXML -- and you may need to do that if you change filenames or properties by hand - or you can double-click on it to open it (visually) in Scene Builder.” Then Scene Builder enters the picture and the task is soon done.   I am new to JME3 game engine but I know Android XML GUI layouts pretty good. I have a simple layout here and I cant figure out what is wrong.   I have a davicom dm9601 USB ethernet card. When I plug in the device, it is detected and drivers are loaded, but I can't connect to internet using it. It works perfectly on XP, other laptop but not working on Ubuntu 11.10 How can I install the driver for this? I have tried many things But nothing is working. • Correct nvidia+intel graphics setup in 14.04

  Just upgraded to 14.04 to try to fix some other issues. Now, something has gone wrong with my graphics. • Wireless doesn't work after installing 11.10

  I just did a fresh install of 11.10 32 bit and I can't get my wireless to work. I installed the drivers the Broadcom STA wireless drivers through additional drivers and rebooted, but it still doesn't see any wireless networks Did something change in 11.10 that makes the wireless card not work anymore? I was using 10.10 before, and it worked fine. • Making Modular, Reusable and Loosely Coupled MVC Components

  I am building MVC3 application and need some general guidelines on how to manage complex client side interaction between my components. Here is my definition of one component in general way: Component which has it's own controller, model and view. All of the component's logic is placed inside these three parts and component is sort of "standalone", it contains it's own form, data needed for interaction, updates itself with Ajax and so on. Beside this internal logic and behavior of the component, it needs to be able to "Talk" to the outside world. By this I mean it should provide data and events (sort of) so when this component gets embedded in pages can notify other components which then can update based on the current state and data. I have an idea to use client ViewModel (in java-script) which would hookup all relevant components on page and control interaction between them. This would make components reusable, modular - independent of the context in which they are used. How would you do this, I am a bit stuck as I do not know if this is a good approach and there is a technical possibility to achieve this using java-script/jquery. The confusing part is about update via Ajax, how to ensure that component is properly linked to ViewModel when component is Ajax updated (or even worse removed or dynamically added). Also, how should this ViewModel be constructed and which technicalities to use here and in components to work as synergy??? On the web, I have found the various examples of the similar approach, but they are oversimplified (even for dummies) or over specific and do not provide valuable resource or general solution for this kind of implementation. If you have some serious examples it would be, also, very helpful. Note: My aim is to make interactions between many components on the same page simpler and more robust and elegant.

• Why, when on Kubuntu I lose internet connection, am I unable to reconnect?

  Using Kubuntu 11.10. Sony Vaio computer. Network controller: Intel Corporation WiFi Link 5100. If I connect to a wireless network, and the signal drops, then I am unable to connect to any network without a reboot. I can assure that the issue has nothing to do with the computer going to sleep, as I have experienced the above while using my computer continuously. Here is exactly what happens: Connect to network (at University, where the connection is not so great). The connection is broken There are three other possible networks available, but none of them can be connected to. I have tried off and on sometimes for hours. I am always able to reestablish a connection after a reboot. I can only think of two explanations. The first is that a temp file is corrupted when the internet connection is abruptly dropped. The second is that my computer actually corrupts something before the loss of internet connection, which causes the loss in signal, and inability to reconnect. However, I am not confident that my explanations are complete, nor do I have any idea how to test these things.

• Extension GLX missing...on a desktop PC

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.10 on a new PC with an Nvidia GTX 560 graphics card, but after installing the Nvidia proprietary drivers (either -current or -current-updates), Unity won't start. When trying to start it manually I get the message "extension GLX missing". I've searched around and found results like this question which point out it's a problem with Nvidia Optimus laptops. • Back button after doing posts on the same page

  I have 3 pages to my site. The 1st page allows you to select a bunch of options. Those options get sent to the 2nd page to be displayed with some data about those options. From here I can click on a link to get to page 3 on 1 of the options. On page 3 I can create a new/edit/delete all on the same page where reloads come back to page 3. I want a "back" button on page 3 to go back to page 2, but retain the options it had from the original page 1 request. Page 1 has a bunch of check boxes which are passed to page 2 as arrays to the controller. My thought is that I have to pass these arrays (I converted them to lists) to page 3 (even thought page 3 directly doesn't need them) so that page 3 can use them in the back link to it can recreate the values page 1 sent to page 2 originally. I'm using asp.net MVC and when I pass the converted array it seems to convert it to the type instead of actually showing the values: "types=System.Collections.Generic.List" (where types is a List. Is this what is needed or are there other options to getting a "back" button in this case to go back to page 2. It's sort of a pain to pass information to page 3 that isn't really relevant to page 3 except the back button.

• Wireless BMC4311 driver install

  Exasperated with Ubuntu 12.04 and BCM4311 driver. HP2133 (was SUSE 10) Installed 12.04 in March. It ran well until November with no updates) then updates killed my wireless controller. Trolled forums & other for fix. Tried sudo -apt-get ing & gedit ing. Finally got it working (on full update with STA driver) Hwew!—thought that was it, only to fail again after 3-4 days. Tried all the fixes again but sudo -apt-get ing & gedit ing does not fix. I'm not without experience either: first 'boot-loader' I/P from 20 switch panel, seq to 4096 bit core-store: run to I/P larger processes from paper tape reader. Gone thru acoustic-coupled networks-to-billboards (before 'the net') pre-DOS, DOS, Windows 3.1 & all the others. This is a tough problem. Any advice?

As well as sessions that will open your mind to the areas where ADF integrates with other Fusion Middleware Solutions such as ADF integration with BI, WebCenter and SOA. Most of the sessions are quite heavy on demos and you'll get a chance to interact with the presenters and ask questions during the live event.
