• No Unity after ubuntu 12.10 upgrade

  After I upgraded to Ubuntu 12.10 from 12.04, there was low graphics and no Unity. Just the mouse and the wallpaper. So, I got into the terminal via Ctrl+Alt+T, launched Chrome and searched for a solution. As a result, I tried this: sudo sh amd-driver-installer-12.6-legacy-x86.x86_64.run It did not work. Then I tried this: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:makson96/fglrx sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade sudo apt-get install fglrx-legacy It did not work too. I removed the repository, got back the the xorg version to 1.13, and tried this: sudo sh /usr/share/ati/fglrx-uninstall.sh sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx fglRx_* fglrx-amdcccle* fglrx-dev* xorg-driver-fglrx sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati xserver-xorg-video-radeon sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx libgl1-mesa-dri xserver-xorg-core It did return the screen resolution back, but still no Unity. Is there something what could I do? My graphics card is: lspci | grep VGA 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV620 [Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series]

• Is this a b43 driver problem?

  I have 13.04 on a Dell Inspiron 1564 with Broadcom 4312 WiFi card. The wl drivers cause kernel panic on linux-3.8 so I succesfully installed the b43 driver a couple of months ago. Now I have changed ISP and got a new router, and the connection drop when downloading software from internet to a 2008r2 using Remmina Client, and apt-get install on virtual machines in virtualbox. I have no idea why this suddenly became a problem.. My phone does not loose the connection, just Ubuntu. Output from /var/log/syslog after lost connection rfkill list(after disconnecting): 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: yes Hard blocked: yes I can use NetworkManager to disable wireless and then enable wireless to connect again. rfkill ublock all/wifi/0 removes only Soft blocked. lshw -C network *-network description: Wireless interface physical id: 4 logical name: wlan0 serial: 78:e4:00:78:d2:05 capabilities: ethernet physical wireless configuration: broadcast=yes driver=b43 driverversion=3.8.0-32-generic firmware=478.104 ip=10.0.0.3 link=yes multicast=yes wireless=IEEE lspci 04:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY (rev 01) After waking from suspend and when booting, it takes about 40 sec to get network connection. This has been a problem all along AND a different question, but I mention it anyway.. cus it's annoying! Please take a look and hopefully someone spot a problem! Thanks!

• Problem video nvidia ubuntu 12.04

  I just did a fresh install of ubuntu 12.04 on my PC (Dell precision 370) but the video is not working as it should. Problems: When I log in to unity 3D I get a transparent bar (where the firefox, libre office, etc icons are) but I can see the tooltips when I put my mouse over where the icons are, I can see the top toolbar with no problem and I see just white on the rest of the desktop! When I log in using unity 2D I see the left bar cut in half (so I can't see the trash icon that is at the botton), the toolbar at the top shows OK and the desktop show OK but with some apps. For example, if I open a terminal and maximize it, it will only show just where the left toolbar "cuts". But if I open firefox it will open fine. Config: My PC comes with a nvidia quadro nvs 280 and I see that by default ubuntu is using the nouveau driver. Workarounds tried: I tried uninstalling the nouveau driver and the desktop works fine but I can use only unity 2D. I tried installing the nvidia-173 drivers using synaptic but I get "Could not apply changes! Fix broken packages first". I go to "Edit - Fix Broken packages" and I get the error: "E: Unable to correct problem, you have held broken packages.E: Error, PkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breakes, this may be caused by held packages.E:Unable to correct dependencies" Output of lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation NV37GL [Quadro PCI-E Series] (rev a2) Any idea so as to what I should do? Thanks in advance for any help. PS: Ah, the nvidia-173 driver was working fine on ubuntu 10.04.

• AR9485 wireless card loses ability to connect after hibernation

  This has happened twice now, the first time it happened I just reinstalled Ubuntu. The only things that I've been messing with in terms of networking, have been restarting the network-manager service after I resume from hibernate (because it never works right after resume, but restarting the service fixes that), and changing my mac address with ifconfig wlan0 down && ifconfig wlan0 hw ether 11:22:33:44:55 && ifconfig wlan0 up. using tail | dmesg returns a bunch of attempts to connect, saying something like authenticating ... okay you're connected! now I'm going to just disconnect because I feel like it. (reason=3). Any ideas? If it helps maybe I'll add a picture of the tail|dmesg output later. My wireless drivers are as follows: Atheros AR9485 Wireless Network Adapter Hamachi Network Interface Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller VirtualBox Host-Only Ethernet Adapter Here is a pastebin of some terminal outputs that could help. Also, the reddit thread has a few answers, for anyone curious. It's located here. It is entirely possible that it's just my school wifi blocking out my laptop, and my home wifi sucks. Wifi does work at places other than my home and school, however my phone can connect to both places. Here is a pastebin of the results of the wireless-info script.

• RedirectToAction help: or better suggestion

  Still getting my feet wet with asp.net mvc. I have a working Action and httppost action but I want to replace the "iffy" code with a RedirectToAction call because the code is rather large for what it does. A call using RedirectToAction would clean it up more. Every way I've tried it fails to work for me in that the drop down list fails to have the proper item selected. The code below works fine but calling RedirectToAction the was I have been does not work for me. So how can i rework the code below to use RedirectToAction ?   I am trying to use log4Net with Asp.net MVC and I cannot get anything to happen with it. i created a config that is in my web project root. • Uploading images from Flex to Rails using Paperclip

  Hi everyone, I'm looking for a way to upload images that were created in my flex app to rails. I've tried to use paperclip, but it don't seem to work. I've got this tutorial here: http://blog.alexonrails.net/?p=218 The problem is, that they are using a FileReference to browse for files on the clients computer. They call the .upload(...) function and send the data to the upload controller.   EDIT: It was issue with database table - dropping and recreating table id column did the work. Problem solved. I'm trying to build web application, that is connected to postgresql database. Results are displaying in view with Kendo UI. When I'm trying to add new row (with Kendo UI 'Add new record' button), I get error 23505: 'Duplicate key violates unique constraint'. My guess is, that EF takes id to insert from the beginning, not the last one, because after 35 (it's number of rows in table) tries - and errors - adding works perfectly. Can someone help me to understand, what's wrong?   Okay, here is my issue: My app has a display of categories in the tab bar at the bottom of the iPhoneOS screen. This only allows 5 categories before it presents the MORE button. I have over 25 (please do not answer this by saying: "Rethink your application...etc" -- that was rudely said before. They are food, drink, etc categories and cannot be changed). I want to allow the user to put their favorites on the home page. The Apple moreNavigationController editing system only allows 20 tab bar items to be rearranged due to space constraints on the editing page. This is not enough so i need to implement my own Editing screen. I set the rightBarButtonItem to nil and created my own. Using NSLog, i can see the "click" happens when clicking the EDIT button, but I cannot push using pushViewController. Nothing happens. I think it has something to do with the navigationController I am addressing...but i am not sure. ps: This all happens in my App Delegate which DOES act as both UITabBarControllerDelegate & UINavigationControllerDelegate.   Was: Design by contract: predict methods needed, discipline yourself and deal with code that comes to mind I like the idea of designing by contract a lot (at least, as far as I understand the principal). I believe it means you define intefaces first before you start implementing actual code, right? However, from my limited experience (3 OOP years now) I usually can't resist the urge to start coding pretty early, for several reasons: because my limited experience has shown me I am unable to predict what methods I will be needing in the interface, so I might as well start coding right away. or because I am simply too impatient to write out the whole interfaces first. or when I do try it, I still wind up implementing bits of code already, because I fear I might forget this or that imporant bit of code, that springs to mind when I am designing the interfaces. As you see, especially with the last two points, this leads to a very disorderly way of doing things. Tasks get mixed up. I should draw a clear line between designing interfaces and actual coding. If you, unlike me, are a good/disciplined planner, as intended above, how do you: ...know the majority of methods you will be needing up front so well? Especially if it's components that implement stuff you are not familiar with yet. ...resist the urge to start coding right away? ...deal with code that comes to mind when you are designing the interfaces? UPDATE: Thank you for the answers so far. Valuable insights! And... I stand corrected; it seems I misinterpreted the idea of Design By Contract. For clarity, what I actually meant was: "coming up with interface methods before implementing the actual components". An additional thing that came up in my mind is related to point 1): b) How do you know the majority of components you will be needing. How do you flesh out these things before you start actually coding? For arguments sake, let's say I'm a novice with the MVC pattern, and I wanted to implement such a component/architecture. A naive approach would be to think of: a front controller some abstract action controller some abstract view ... and be done with it, so to speak. But, being more familiar with the MVC pattern, I know now that it makes sense to also have: a request object a router a dispatcher a response object view helpers etc.. etc.. If you map this idea to some completely new component you want to develop, with which you have no experience yet; how do you come up with these sort of additional components without actually coding the thing, and stuble upon the ideas that way? How would you know up front how fine grained some components should be? Is this a matter of disciplining yourself to think it out thoroughly? Or is it a matter of being good at thinking in abstractions?

  My AT91SAM7X512's SPI peripheral gets disabled on the X time (X varies) that I write to SPI_TDR. As a result, the processor hangs on the while loop that checks the TDRE flag in SPI_SR. This while loop is located in the function SPI_Write() that belongs to the software package/library provided by ATMEL. The problem occurs arbitrarily - sometimes everything works OK and sometimes it fails on repeated attempts (attemp = downloading the same binary to the MCU and running the program). Configurations are (defined in the order of writing): SPI_MR: MSTR = 1 PS = 0 PCSDEC = 0 PCS = 0111 DLYBCS = 0 SPI_CSR[3]: CPOL = 0 NCPHA = 1 CSAAT = 0 BITS = 0000 SCBR = 20 DLYBS = 0 DLYBCT = 0 SPI_CR: SPIEN = 1 After setting the configurations, the code verifies that the SPI is enabled, by checking the SPIENS flag. I'm controlling this line by myself in the code, by de/asserting the ChipSelect#3 (NPCS3) pin when needed. The reason that I'm doing so is because that problems occurred while trying to let the SPI controller to control this pin. I didn't reset the SPI peripheral twice, because that the errata tells to reset it twice only if I perform a reset - which I don't do. Quoting the errata: If a software reset (SWRST in the SPI Control Register) is performed, the SPI may not work properly (the clock is enabled before the chip select.) Problem Fix/Workaround The SPI Control Register field, SWRST (Software Reset) needs to be written twice to be cor- rectly set. I noticed that sometimes, if I put a delay before the write to the SPI_TDR register (in SPI_Write()), then the code works perfectly and the communications succeeds. • ngGrid reusable filter AngularJS

  I have a business requirement that I filter a boolean value in my ngGrid. The filter has three states: only true, only false and both. Filtering like this seems to be a common enough use case that I should refactor that functionality out of my code for re use (possibly in a directive/filter?). I'd like to know how I can go about pulling out the customFilter function in my controller and make it so that I can pass the filter a property name on which to filter, and a value for selectedFilterOption. The code currently works, but I feel like this is a good chance to get better at angular :). • wpf display staggered content

  I am trying to display a rather dynamic list of data in WPF. I have essentially a LineItem class that contains a list of strings and a line type. The line type separates different categories of line items. All line items with the same type should be displayed the same and their data should line up. For example, this list will contain an order summary. And the there will be a line type that represents something with a width and height. The width and height must line up vertically. However, there may be other line types that don't have to line up vertically. I want to produce a table similar to what you see below: ------------------------------------------------------------------ | some content here | some more content here | last content here | |----------------------------------------------------------------| | some content here | | last content here | |----------------------------------------------------------------| | spanning content that is longer then most | last content here | |----------------------------------------------------------------| | some content that can span a really long distance | ------------------------------------------------------------------ I attempted to do this by creating ListView with a single column that had a datatemplate that contained a grid with a fixed number of fields and then bind to the Colspan value. Unfortunately, this didn't work. I ended up with incorrect or overlapping content anytime I tried to do a column span. My intial plan was to create a factory and separate classes that display the data differently based on type. However, I'm struggling coming up with a strategy for this using MVVM as I really can't just build something and display it. I have toyed with the idea of making some kind of UI service class that is injected, but it would still require some pretty detailed UI information from the controller to do it's work.

• jquery with ASP.NET MVC - calling ajax enabled web service

  This is a bit of a continuation of a previous question. Now I'm trying to make a call to an AJAX enabled web service which I have defined within the ASP.NET MVC application (i.e. the MovieService.svc). But the service is never being called in my getMovies javascript function. This same technique of calling the AJAX web service works ok if I try it in a non ASP.NET MVC application, so it makes me wonder if maybe the ASP MVC routes are interfering with things somehow when it tries to make the AJAX web service call. Do you have any idea why my web service isn't getting called?
