• Is there a way to get a test results and coverage html report from MSTest

  I'd like to be able to produce a HTML based report from the Results.trx and data.coverage files that MSTest creates. Ideally this would just list any failures, and show some basic coverage stats. Does anyone know of a tool that does this?

  Generally, I'm still very much a unit testing neophyte. BTW, you may also see this question on other forums like xUnit.net, et cetera, because it's an important question to me. I apoligize in advance for my cross posting; your opinions are very important to me and not everyone in this forum belongs to the other forums too. I was looking at a large decade old legacy system which has had over 700 unit tests written recently (700 is just a small beginning). The tests happen to be written in MSTest but this question applies to all testing frameworks AFAIK. When I ran, via vs2008 "ALL TESTS", the final count was only seven tests. That's about 1% of the total tests that have been written to date. MORE INFORMATION: The ASP.NET MVC 2 RTM source code, including its unit tests, is available on CodePlex; those unit tests are also written in MSTest even though (an irrelevant fact) Brad Wilson later joined the ASP.NET MVC team as its Senior Programmer. All 2000 plus tests get run, not just a few. QUESTION: given that AFAIK the purpose of unit tests is to identify breakages in the SUT, am I correct in thinking that the "best practice" is to always, or at least very frequently, run all of the tests?   Hi, i have a question about unit testing. say i have a controller with one create method which puts a new customer in the database: //code a bit shortened public actionresult Create(Formcollection formcollection){ client c = nwe client(); c.Name = formcollection["name"]; ClientService.Save(c); { Clientservice would call a datalayer object and save it in the database. What i do now is create a database testscript and set my database in a know condition before testing. So when i test this method in the unit test, i know that there must be one more client in the database, and what it's name is. In short: ClientController cc = new ClientController(); cc.Create(new FormCollection (){name="John"}); //i know i had 10 clients before assert.areEqual(11, ClientService.GetNumberOfClients()); //the last inserted one is John assert.areEqual("John", ClientService.GetAllClients()[10].Name); So i've read that unit testing should not be hitting the database, i've setup an IOC for the database classes, but then what? I can create a fake database class, and make it do nothing. But then ofcourse my assertions will not work because if i say GetNumberOfClients() it will alwasy return X because it has no interaction with the fake database class used in the Create Method. I can also create a List of Clients in the fake database class, but as there will be two different instance created (one in the controller action and one in the unit test), they will have no interaction. What is the way to make this unit test work without a database?

  server side is PHP + zend framework. problem: i have huge of data appox 5000 records and no of columns are 5 in input.txt file. i like to read all data into memory only once and send some data to the every browser request. but if i update that input.txt file then updated data must be auto synchronized to that memory location. so i need to solve that problem by using memory caching technique.but caching technique has expire time.but if input.txt is updated before cache expire then i need to auto synchronize to that memory location. now i am using zend framework 1.10.is it possible in zend framework. can anybody give me some line of code of zendfrmawork i have no option to use memchached server(distributed). Only zend framwork.

• Is a class that is hard to unit test badly designed?

  I am now doing unit testing on an application which was written over the year, before I started to do unit-testing diligently. I realized that the classes I wrote are hard to unit test, for the following reasons: Relies on loading data from database. Which means I have to setup a row in the table just to run the unit test (and I am not testing database capabilities). Requires a lot of other external classes just to get the class I am testing to its initial state. On the whole, there don't seem to be anything wrong with the design except that it is too tightly coupled (which by itself is a bad thing). I figure that if I have written automated test cases with each of the class, hence ensuring that I don't heap extra dependencies or coupling for the class to work, the class might be better designed. Does this reason holds water? What are your experiences?

• Is it possible to profile memory usage of unit tests?

  I'm looking at building some unit tests to ascertain if resources are leaking (or not) using the unit testing framework that comes with Visual Studio. At present, I'm evaluating the latest version of ANTS Profiler, but I can't quite work out if it allows me to force a snapshot from code (so that I can take a snapshot, run a unit test a few hundred times, force a garbage collection, and take another snapshot, and save the results out for later analysis). Is this possible to do with ANTS/Visual Studio or should I be exploring options with other profilers?

• Protocol buffer deserialization and a dynamically loaded DLL in Compact Framework

  I saw a question related to this on the full framework here. Since it seems to have stayed unresolved for quite a while and this is for the compact framework, I though it would be better to create a new question for it. I want to deserialize types for which I am loading assemblies dynamically (with Assembly.LoadFrom) and I am getting a "Unable to identify known-type for ProtoIncludeAttribute" error. In the related question I mentioned, it was hinted that hooking AppDomain.AssemblyResolve event would help solving the problem. It makes sense for the full framework, but that event is not available in the CF. I wonder if there is a way to do this with CF. The structures I am using look a lot like this and all the classes required for deserialization are loaded from the same Assembly. If the assembly is referenced instead of dynamically loaded it works fine, but fails if done dynamically.

  Using EF 4.0 Code only i want to make an assocation between an abstract and normal class. I have class 'Item', 'ContentBase' and 'Test'. 'ContentBase' is abstract and 'Test' derives from it. 'ContentBase' has a property 'Item' that links to an instance of 'Item'. So that 'Test.Item' or any class that derives from 'ContentBase' has an 'Item' navigation property. • Test assertions for tuples with floats

  I have a function that returns a tuple that, among others, contains a float value. Usually I use assertAlmostEquals to compare those, but this does not work with tuples. Also, the tuple contains other data-types as well. Currently I am asserting every element of the tuple individually, but that gets too much for a list of such tuples. Is there any good way to write assertions for such cases?

  Hi guys, So I'm slowly tackling OO and Zend Framework and their MVC process in particular. I have an existing website and web-based calendar application that was designed by me, but coded by a different person and done procedurally. I understand that it will be very difficult for my application to ever be completely OO without a full re-write, and I'm fine with that. I have a lot of updates and modifications I want to do in the future, so I'm wanting to start replacing some of the basic components (login, authentication. etc) now, and continue to learn as I go. Again, I'm really a newbie at programming and OO. What I'm wondering is if I'm wanting to incorporate the Framework, then would I just first drop my whole site into the /public folder of the Framework and then start pulling functionality out from there?

• How do I add a VSTO project as a reference to a unit testing project?

  In order not to pollute my projects with unit tests, I like to create a separate project for my unit tests; I add a reference to the project under test in the unit tests project. However, this isn't working that well with my VSTO excel add-in projects: when I create a separate unit test project and go to Add Reference Projects, there is no project to pick. What I have done so far is Add Reference Browse, and pick the add-in dll from the debug folder. I have also run into issues from time to time with this, with the reference suddenly not working, requiring to remove/re-add the dll reference. Can anybody explain why a VSTO project doesn't show up as a regular project? And is there a better way to go about it than what I am doing presently?

• How can I include utility functions from another file into a Sproutcore unit test file?

  Lets say I have a few utility functions in file tests/utils/functions.js. I would like to use these functions from several unit test files. However, I'm not able to use them as the Sproutcore build system does not include any external files into the html page used to run the unit tests. Only application code and the code from the unit tests to be run are included. So is it possible to somehow include Javascript files to be used in unit test files in Sproutcore? I could add the functions.js file into some other directory inside my application to be able to use them. However, this is not what I want to do as the utility functions are useless in final production build and would only make my application larger.

  Question: I need to synchronize a few ActionScript files from my computer to a network share (backup). I saw a quick fix would be using Microsoft Sync Framework for this, and write a windows service. My problem is I also use Linux, and before I start with MS vendor lockin, is there any sync framework/library/whatever I could use that works accross platform? Or does the MS sync framework work on Linux, too? It is my understanding that it is a wrapper around some com objects, thus it wouldn't work. All I need is synchronizing files. So never mind the database part, although it would be nice to have it, too.

  I want to get the code coverage of my tests. So I set the settings, build an app with .gcno files and run it on simulator. It can get the coverage data successfully if there is no crash issue. But if the app crashed, I will get nothing. So how can I get the code coverage data when the app crash? In my thought, this is because it will not call __gcov_flush() method when app crash. I only add app does not run in background to my plist file, so __gcov_flush() is called only at the time I press Home button. Is there any way to call __gcov_flush() before the app crash?

  Hi, i am currently trying to implement a "third party framework" (FeedbackReporter.Framework) into my preferencepane. Unfortunately I am getting the following error all the time when trying to launch my preference pane: 16.05.10 23:13:30 System Preferences[32645] dlopen_preflight failed with dlopen_preflight(/Users/me/Library/PreferencePanes/myPane.prefPane/Contents/MacOS/myPane): Library not loaded: @executable_path/../Frameworks/FeedbackReporter.framework/Versions/A/FeedbackReporter Referenced from: /Users/me/Library/PreferencePanes/myPane.prefPane/Contents/MacOS/myPane Reason: image not found for /Users/me/Library/PreferencePanes/myPane.prefPane As far as I read so far, this problem is probably caused because my prefPane is no actual app, but a "plugin" of "System Settings.app" and thus @executable_path resolves to a path within the bundle of this app, instead of the bundle of my prefpane. But I don't really picked up howto fix this problem. I guess it must be fairly easy since it should be a usual case that people use non-apple-frameworks in PreferencePanes. Thanks for your hints!
