• Who owns the code, who owns the algorithm, who owns the idea?

  This question got me thinking what products of the programming effort belong to the employer, and what don't. The two extremes are (0) the code - it apparently belongs to the employer and (1) the learned personal and technical skills. But what is in between? Who owns the pseudocode/algorithm? Who owns the general idea of the algorithm? Who owns the know-how that such an algorithm may serve some useful purpose (e.g. on this site questions are values, as well as answers)? Also: Who owns an idea on the web?

  I've often seen such comments be used: function foo() { ... } // foo while (...) { ... } // while if (...) { ... } // if and sometimes even as far as if (condition) { ... } // if (condition) I've never understood this practice and thus never applied it. If your code is so long that you need to know what this ending } is then perhaps you should consider splitting it up into separate functions. Also, most developers tools are able to jump to the matching bracket. And finally the last is, for me, a clear violation to the DRY principle; if you change the condition you would have to remember to change the comment as well (or else it could get messy for the maintainer, or even for you). So why do people use this? Should we use it, or is it bad practice?

• java gui changing picture causes heapspace error

  I have a java programme than when a button is clicked it updates the image on screen to the according image. this will work for the first 15 or so clicks then it causes a java heapspace error. I think it is because of the way I am updating the jpanel that contains the bufferedimage but not sure what the reason is. • PHP Codeigniter Undefined Offset Error

  Hello, I am building a Codeigniter shopping cart. On the cart details page I have a form input field allowing the user to type in the quantity required of a product, and a submit button to post the information to the update function. When there is just one item in the cart, when updating the quantity everything works as it should. • Javascript error: Object required...tough time fixing this

  The situation is this: a friend of mine asked me to help her with a website she's working on called www.KeepsakePartyInvitations.com. Her original designer created this code but didn't finish the project. So here I am to help save the day. Now, once a photo has been added to the party template and the mouse is placed over the image, an alternate text message appears to the right. The message informs the visitor how to reposition and resize the image, if necessary. I'm testing the procedure in the invitation to reposition the image. I follow the directions about moving the picture, but the mouse does not let go of the photo. Where ever the mouse moves, so does the image. The same thing occurs if you want to resize the image, you follow the directions but the image does not resize. I check the error message in IE 8 and it states: Message: Object required Line: 873 Char: 3 Code: 0 URI: http://www.keepsakepartyinvitations.com/Includes/JCode.js When I checked the Javascript file, the Line 873 states: tempX = e.clientX + document.body.scrollLeft If you review the javascript file, the function where the line is located is called: function getMouseXY(e). Please help me, it has been a long while since I've worked with Javascript and I'm motivated to get this fixed. Thank you!

• How to handle window closed in the middle of a long running operation gracefully?

  We have the following method called directly from the UI thread: void DoLengthyProcessing() { DoStuff(); var items = DoMoreStuff(); //do even more stuff - 200 lines of code trimmed this.someControl.PrepareForBigThing(); //someControl is a big user control //additional 100 lines of code that access this.someControl this.someControl.Finish(items); } Many of the called methods call Application.DoEvents() (and they do so many times) (do not ask me why, this is black magic written by black magic programmers and it can not be changed because everyone is scared what the impact would be) and there is also an operation running on a background thread involved in the processing. As a result, the window is not fully nonresponsive and can be closed manually during the processing. The Dispose method of the form "releases" the someControl variable by setting it to null. As a result, in case the user closes the window during the lengthy process, a null reference exception is thrown. How to handle this gracefully without just catching and logging the exception caused by disposal? Assigning the someControl instance to a temporary variable in the beginning of the method - but the control contains many subcontrols with similar disposal scheme - sets them to null and this causes null reference exceptions in other place put if (this.IsDisposed) return; calls before every access of the someControl variable. - making the already nasty long method even longer and unreadable. in Closing event, just indicate that we should close and only hide the window. Dispose it at the end of the lengthy operation. This is not very viable because there are many other methods involved (think 20K LOC for a single control) that would need to handle this mechanism as well. How to most effectively handle window disposal (by user action) in the middle of this kind of processing?

  When I get a runtime exception from the standard library, it's almost always a problem in my code and not in the library code. Is there a way to truncate the exception stack trace so that it doesn't show the guts of the library package? • jQuery Code Only Fires On Hard Refresh?

  The XFBML version of the Facebook Registration plugin only loads HTTPS. I need it to load HTTP so my form does not call a security error mismatch between domains. I wrote this code to get the SRC and rewrite it with out HTTPS It works fine on the first load, however on Chrome and Safari it only loads the first time and on HARD refreshes. It does not load on standard reloads or by pressing "enter" on the address bar. • Visual Studio Code Analysis: CA0001 Error Running Code Analysis - object reference not set to an instance of an object

  For a WPF application being developed in VS 2012 (Ultimate), the application runs fine when a particular project's code analysis is disabled. Enabling it results in the error above. This was working fine until recently (i.e. running with code analysis enabled for the particular project) and the only recent change I can think of is removing NHibernate Profiler (using NuGet). Will be grateful for any pointers on how to debug this, or to see a more detailed log/error message.

• Cannot redeclare class error when generating PHPUnit code coverage report

  Starting a project with Zend Framework 1.10 and Doctrine 2 (Beta1). I am using namespaces in my own library code. When generating code coverage reports I get a Fatal Error about Redeclaring a class. To provide more info, I've commented out the xdebug_disable() call in my phpunit executable so you can see the function trace (disabled local variables output because there was too much output). I guess it should be noted that HelperBroker is the first file in the filesystem stemming out from library/Cob I am on Snow Leopard with the latest/recent versions of all software (Zend Server, Zend Framework, Doctrine 2 Beta1, Phing, PHPUnit, PEAR).

• DexFile.class error in eclipse

  I get this weird error everytime I debug in eclipse. It just seemed to appear one day and I was wondering if anyone else was running int the same problem. It does not affect my app in anyway visibly and does not cause a crash but it is an annoyance while debugging.   I run into problem when tried to install Ubuntu 11.04 on Windows 7 using wubi installer . It downloads the image for sometime and ends up with the error that says Permission denied: for more details see the log file In the log it seems to be like DownloadError: Problem connecting to tracker - urlopen error (10060, 'Operation timed out') but my network is good and I checked it. Tried using wubi several times, but ends up with same problem.   Whenever I plug my iPod Touch (2nd gen) into my MacBook running Ubuntu 10.10 I get the following error: DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus) It will show up in the file browser but whenever I try to mount it I get that error. EDIT: I thought that this might be because I had it plugged into a dock, but I tried plugging it in directly to the MacBook with the USB Cable and it still does not work, same error message.
