• Do TODO comments make sense?

  I am working on a fairly big project and got the task to do some translations for it. There were tons of labels that haven't been translated and while I was digging through the code I found this little piece of code //TODO translations This made me think about the sense of these comments to yourself (and others?) because I got the feeling that most developers after they get a certain piece of code done and it does what it's supposed to do they never look at this until they have to maintain it or add new functionality. So that this TODO will be lost for a long time. Does it make sense to write this comments or should they be written on a whiteboard/paper/something else where they remain in the focus of developers?

• My events don't show up in the goal funnels or conversion funnels

  I have an event set up on a website and I'd like to track the effect this event has on conversion rate. The event seems to be working fine - I can see it on Top Events with all the labels, etc. But when going into Goal Flow and selecting 'Event Category' these events don't show up. I have this running for about a week. And I have made multiple checks to verify that I have events that triggered the conversion goal. Any clue about what I'm doing wrong?

  I have a Visual Studio solution with multiple projects: Acme.Core Acme.Core.Tests Acme.UI.MvcSite1 Acme.UI.MvcSite2 Acme.UI.WinformsApp1 Acme.UI.WinformsApp2 ... The entire solution is checked-in in a single GitHub (private) repo. Acme.Core contains our business logic and all UI projects are deployables. UI projects have different requirements and features, but some of them are implemented in more than one project. All issues are opened in a single issue tracker and classified using labels ([MvcSite1], [WinformsApp1], etc) but I'm thinking it's starting to get messy. Is it ok to use a single repository and issue tracker to track multiple projects in one solution?

• How can I refactor client side functionality to create a product line-like generic design?

  Assume the following situation similar to that of Stack Overflow: I have a system with a front-end that can perform various manipulations on the data (by sending messages to REST back-end): Posting Editing and deleting Adding labels and tags Now in the first version we created it well modularized but the need as of now for 'evolving' the system similar to Stack Overflow. My question is how best to separate the commonality and how to incorporate the variability with respect to the following: Commonality: The above 'functionalities' and sending/receiving the data from the server Look and feel (also a variability as explained below) HTTP verbs associated with the above actions Variability: The RESTful URLs where the requests are sent The text/style of the UI (the commonality is analogous to Stack Overflow - the functionality of upvotes, posting a question remains the same, but the words, the icons, the look and feel is still different across sites) I think this is entirely a client-side code organization/refactoring issue. I'm heavily using jQuery, javascript and backbone for front-end development. My question is how best should I isolate the same to be able to create multiple such aspects to the tool we are currently working on?

• How to coach a developer with dyslexia to improve his spelling and grammar capabilities?

  Just having read this question regarding developers with dyslexia, I still have some open questions on how to deal with it: I am working on a project sinc approx. 6 month with a new developer who just finished university. I see that the code quality is high, what he's missing is the ability to write texts (even short ones) in an error-free manner (both, syntax and grammar errors). He is working on some UI stuff (VS.NET 2010, ASP.NET 4) and, beside coding, has to write short text for labels, buttons, grid view headers, page titles, etc. Since even those texts have errors inside, no matter how much I try to discuss the need for a professional, text-error-free UI, he seems to not manage to get this right, although he really tries. So my questions are: Are there any hints how he (or I) should proceed to enhance the text quality? Do you know any tools (like inline spell checkers) for VS.NET to highlight syntax and grammar errors? (We are working on a German-only UI, if this is important to know)

• Should I provide fallbacks for HTML5/CSS3 elements in a web page at this point?

  I'm wondering if I should bother providing a fallback for HTML5 tags and attributes and CSS3 styling at this point in time. I know that there's probably still a lot of people out there who use older versions of browsers and HTML5/CSS3 are still fairly new. I read this article: Should I use non-standard tags in a HTML page for highlighting words? and one answer mentioned that people kind of "cheat" with older browsers by using the new tags and attributes, but styling them in CSS to ensure they show up right. This question: Relevance of HTML5: Is now the time? was asked about two years ago and I don't know how relevant it is anymore. For example, I want to use the placeholder and required attributes in a web form I'm building and it has no labels to show what each <input> is. How do I handle this, or do I bother?

• PHPForm Data Generate PDF & Send to Email?

  I'm a beginner in PHP I was wondering if this is easy to do or if i'd have to outsource this to a programmer - Basically when a user fills in the PHP Form and submits it I need this to generate as a PDF (with all the labels etc) which will then email/attach to MY email and NOT the user who submitted this form. I have looked at tcpdf, fpdi but i dont think any of those scripts allow me to do this specifically as from what i heard it generates a download link for the user, and that is not what i need. • Migrate from Thunderbird to Mutt

  I am contemplating moving from Thunderbird to Mutt (provided it is feasible) to move to a faster, simpler application. My current Thunderbird set-up consists of multiple IMAP accounts (gmail and google apps). Only selected folders (read labels) in each IMAP account are stored locally. For all other folders, I glance through the headers and open a message only if I find it interesting. I also use folder bookmarks to navigate to folders quickly. I also move messages across folders with keyboard shortcuts. Is it possible to replicate the set-up in Mutt? Can someone share/ point to a sample muttrc file that does the same thing? It would be great if the muttrc file is adequately commented. On a side note, will it also be possible to import my messages from Thunderbird locally? That will save me considerable network traffic (about 2GB data stored locally).

• Why I LOVE Dell

  We recently ordered a laptop for an employee.  It was delivered yesterday and we realized it had no web cam and wasn’t the 1080p resolution.  He wasn’t happy. So, this morning, I sent an e-mail to our rep and asked him what we could do.  Within an hour or two, he called me, arranged a replacement laptop with the corrected specs, set up a return and had everything arranged and charged us only for the difference.  No pain, no silly questions.  We won’t loose use of the laptop either.  The return and the new laptop will overlap so that we can just pack up the old laptop in the box of the new one, slap some labels on and away we go. • Design difficulty for multiple panel forms [closed]

  I have form that consists of multiple panel on the right, a treeview on the left and a terminal richtextbox on the bottom. When i click on a node of the treeview i bring up the panel that is attached with the node. For example i have 10 nodes on the treeview, i have 10 panels that are attached to this nodes. On every panel, i have many textboxes, labels, comboboxes etc. I don't dynamically construct and dispose the items on the panels, i create the items in the designer file of the project. In that case, there is a problem. I really find it difficult to align or place items on the panel because there seems a lot of aligning lines on the screen. What should be done to make the design of the panels easy? I don't want to construct items dynamically. Do i have to do that dynamically or is there a design procedure that make this process easy?

This has the Intel graphics controller : 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Ivy Bridge Graphics Controller (rev 09) TO get it to even boot, had to add the nomodeset parameter to the kernel. Otherwise will not even start up X Ive upgraded my kernel to the latest 3.6 with no difference. The display section reads the monitor as the only display and labels it as laptop. Cant seem to get it to work! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• What are the benefits of NoSQL?

  I'm struggling to see how NoSQL brings any advantages to a system, so I'm interested in hearing from people who have chosen to use it, both the reasons they chose NoSQL, and positive and negative experiences in implementation and use. My first impressions are that NoSQL is a product of the availability of very large, very cheap storage; it seems that a million record database could easily have a 100MByte overhead in field labels embedded in the records. This goes against one of my software design instincts - remove redundancy in code and data whenever practical. However, NoSQL is being used with success in large high-traffic systems, so I must be missing something, looking forward to your responses.

  I'm using an ajax registration form plugin for my website and I'm thinking to implement also Paypal. Here is how I want to implement it : I have 3 labels ( Name, Phone, Email, ) and a " Buy " button. After the user is typing his name, phone and email they click on "Buy" and they will be redirected to the paypal payment page or if it's possible to stay on the same page. Probably, what I need to know is how to make the "Buy " only after the forms ( name, phone, email ) are validated. Is there a plugin, or a snippet of code already made to not start something which already exists.

• Is passing the Model around in this way considered bad practice?

  If I have a view called, for example, ViewDetails that displays user information in labels and has a Model called ViewDetailsModel and if I want to allow the user to click a button to edit some of these details, is it considered bad practice is I pass the entire Model in the markup to a controller method which then assigns the values for another model, using the values stored in the Model that was passed in as a parameter to that action method? If so, should there instead be a service method that gets the data required for the edit view? For example: In the ViewDetails view, the user clicks the edit button which calls an action method in the controller (and passes in the Model object). The action method then uses the data in the Model object to populate another model which will be used for the EditDetails view that will be returned.

• Can I resize my partitions?

  Following is a screenshot of my current partitions shown by gparted Note that the partitions on the right of /dev/sda3, without labels on them in the figure, are /dev/sda6 (for /home), /dev/sda7 (for /), unallocated, and /dev/sda5 (for swap), from left to right, form altogether the primary partition /dev/sda4. I would like to resize the partitions, such that some unused space from /dev/sda7 (for /) and the small unallocated space can be moved to /dev/sda3 (for /windows-d) and make it larger. • James - mail server configuration help needed

  Hi, I am trying to setup James mail server on a linux machine. The linux machine has public static ip address assigned. I installed James and added in the config.xml added the servername as mydomain.com. In the DNS for mydomain.com, I have created a A-record, say mx.mydomain.com, which corresponds to the ipaddress of the above mail server machine. Then added mx.mydomain.com as MX record for mydomain.com. In James, I have created a new user test. Then from gmail, I sent a mail to [email protected]. The mail is not received back and it didn't even bounce back. The linux machine is behind a firewall with only 22, 80, 8080 ports open for external network. My question here is, Do I require do open any other ports on the firewall so that the mail I send from gmail arrives to James? If it's not the port problem, any views on solving this issue? I don't want to send mails from this server. It's only for receiving the mails.

• How to scrape a _private_ google group?

  Hi there, I'd like to scrape the discussion list of a private google group. It's a multi-page list and I might have to this later again so scripting sounds like the way to go. Since this is a private group, I need to login in my google account first. Unfortunately I can't manage to login using wget or ruby Net::HTTP. Surprisingly google groups is not accessible with the Client Login interface, so all the code samples are useless. My ruby script is embedded at the end of the post. The response to the authentication query is a 200-OK but no cookies in the response headers and the body contains the message "Your browser's cookie functionality is turned off. Please turn it on." I got the same output with wget. See the bash script at the end of this message. I don't know how to workaround this. am I missing something? Any idea? Thanks in advance. • CreateProcess doesn't pass command line arguments

• Try/Catch with jquery ajax request

  I am trying to build a Google Chrome extension that makes an ajax request. Something similar to the GMail Checker extension. The problem is that when I do the request using jquery, and I put in the wrong username/password, it fails silently, with the error callback function ignored. If I move the ajax call out of the background.html script (where I can't see the requests in the developer window), to the options.html script, I get a dialog box to re-authenticate. If I hit cancel, THEN the jquery error callback fires. But in the original model extension (again, the Gmail checker), they use plain (non-jquery) ajax calls with a try/catch, and if I put in the wrong credentials, I get an alert saying as much. I tried wrapping the entire jquery call in a try/catch, like so: try { $.ajax({ type: "POST", url: someurl, contentType : "text/xml", data: somedata, username: user, password: pass, success: function(data,status,xhr){ alert("Hurrah!"); }, error: function(xhr, status, error){ alert("Error!" + xhr.status); }, dataType: "xml" }); } catch(e) { alert("You messed something up!"); } But still nothing.
