    Given a file tree - a directory with directories in it etc, what software would you recommend to create a diagram of the file-tree as a graphic file that I can embed in a word processor document I prefer vector (SVG, EPS, EMF...) files. The tool must run on Windows, but preferably cross-platform. The tool may be commercial but preferably free.

I want to have several instances on a single form, be able to move them around and then sample those points, obviously returning the color of the pixel at the center of the crosshair, is there already a tool that will do this, before I go and write one?   • Qt drag/drop: cannot move when copy is enabled (Ubuntu Gnome)

    I'm implementing a view and a model where I want to support both moving items internally (by dragging), and copying items (by pressing Ctrl while dragging). I've done everything I need to do according to the instructions. I've set up the mime functions, I've implemented removeRows(), and flags(). The problem is when I drag, it defaults to a copy operation (I get the arrow cursor with a plus sign, and it indeed copies the item by creating a new one in the model). The only difference I can see is this: If I return only Qt::MoveAction in supportedDropActions(), it only moves. If I return (Qt::CopyAction | Qt::MoveAction), it only copies. Any ideas? I want it to work like files in Nautilus (Gnome) or Windows file Explorer: drag moves icons around, ctrl+drag copies them.

  • Distributing a custom command line tool to enterprise servers

    I've been tasked with building a command line tool that we will be providing to our enterprise customers so that they can use the API to upload data to our platform. The API works with standard cURL requests, so I can do most of the basic functionality with simple bash scripting, although I would like to provide something that is solid and really makes it easy for them to use and I don't know what I don't know. It's been a good 8 years since I've really done any serious sysadmin work. Most of the good tools I use these days are written in Ruby or Python and have a standard distribution process (Gems, for example). However, I know rhel and other platforms have their own package managers. Finally, the question: In today's day and age, what language / distribution method should I consider in order to cover the widest range of platforms without having to build completely different versions for each platform? I'd also love any general feedback you have about building similar projects, or links to projects that you think do a good job of this now and have open source code that I could read.   • IIS7 - Web Deployment Tool - SetParam/SetParamFile to set http and https bindings + Cert

    Hi, we're currently using the MS Web Deployment Tool to sync a live website and some WebServices from a staging box to two live servers. The staging box hosts the site on any IP on port 17000, whereas the two live servers are load-balanced and have a different IP for each of them. At present, I generate two separate packages for deployment - one for each machine - using the sync operation and specifying a DestinationBinding parameter as follows: msdeploy -verb:sync -source:WebServer,computerName=localhost -dest:package="machinename.zip" -setParam:type="DestinationBinding",scope="SiteName",value="ip_address:port:". (Split across multiple lines to make it easier to read!) I run this twice, with a different target filename and ip address for each of the two machines. When it comes to deployment, I simply do a sync from each package to its respective live site. I know, I know - I should be able to do it by generating one parameterised package and then perhaps using the SetParamFile switch for each of the two Servers - believe me I'd like to, but the documentation on doing this is frankly non-existent. Now I need to configure and deploy both HTTP and HTTPS binding for this site; including also the ssl cert that is to be used. I've added an SSL binding for the site on the staging box - which uses a development cert (which will need to be replaced - or should the staging box be using the live cert?), and now the above command line has the effect of replacing the target IP on both http and https entries. It appears that I cannot specify multiple bindings plus the cert information in the DestinationBinding value in the -setParam above, so anyone know how would I go about doing this? Any help greatly appreciated.

    I am looking for a tool like MacTubes for Ubuntu. MacTubes is a mac app that can search, watch and download youtube videos. The great advantage of this app is that it searches youtube and shows all videos available there and allows you to select all and download everything fast and easy. MacTubes is so awesome that it also converts the video to MP4 and downloads the HD version of a video when available. I use this on my mac, but my sister uses Linux and I am looking for something like that for her. I have tried Miro, but Miro's search feature is bad as hell. I search for something using MacTubes and it shows me 1600 results. The same search under Miro shows me 40 results. Miro never shows more than one page of results. I prefer it to be an application with a GUI, instead of command line, because my sister's proficiency in Linux is not that good. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  • Tool to Save a Range of Disk Clusters to a File

    Hi, Yesterday I deleted a (fragmented) archive file only to find that it did not extract correctly, so I was left stranded. Fortunately there was not much space free on the drive, so most of the space marked as free was from the now-deleted archive. I pulled up a disk editor and—painfully—managed to get a list of cluster ranges from the FAT that were marked as unused. My task then was to save these ranges of clusters to files so that I could examine them to try to determine which parts were from the archive and recombine them to attempt to restore the deleted file. This turned out to be a huge pain in the butt because the disk editor did not have the ability to select a range of clusters, so I had to navigate to the start of each cluster and hold down Ctrl+Shift+PgDn until I reached the end of the range (which usually took forever!) I did a quick Google search to see if I could find a command-line tool (preferably with Windows and DOS versions) that would allow me to issue a commands such as: SAVESECT -c 0xBEEF 0xCAFE FOO.BAR ::save clusters 0xBEEF-0xCAFE to FOO.BAR SAVESECT -s 1111 9876 BAZ.BIN ::save sectors 1111-9876 to BAZ.BIN Sadly my search came up empty.   • Command or tool to display list of connections to a Windows file share

    Is there a Windows command or tool that can tell me what users or computers are connected to a Windows fileshare? Here's why I'm looking for this: I've run into issues in the past where our deployment team has deployed BizTalk applications to one of our environments using the wrong bindings, leaving us with two receive locations pointing to the same file share (i.e. both dev and test servers point to dev receive location uri). When this occurs, the two environments in question tend to take turns processing the files received (meaning if I am attempting to debug something in one environment and the other environment has picked the file up, it looks as if my test file has disappeared into thin air). We have several different environments, plus individual developer machines, and I'd rather not have to check each individually to find the culprit. I'm looking for a quick way to detect what locations are connected to the share once I notice my test files vanishing. If I can determine the connections that are invalid, I can go directly to the person responsible for that environment and avoid the time it takes to randomly ask around. Or if the connections appear to be correct, I can go directly to troubleshooting where in the process the message gets lost. Any suggestions?

  • Is it possible to use the Volume Notifications from Gnome Shell in XFCE?

    I somehow had them working before in 11.10 but I don't really remember what did I do back then other than activating "load Gnome components on start up" in the XFCE's settings manager. I've tried the same in 12.04 but doesn't seem to do anything, I specifically ask for the Volume notifications as other notifications used notify-osd or xfce4-notifyd but the volume one was Gnome's (I found that later) As far as I know it uses notification-daemonbut installing it instead of the other two doesn't give me the correct notifications. I'm using XFCE 4.10

    Hi All, In my company, presently we are using Rational clearcase as the Software Configuration Management tool for our Embedded software development. The software is basically for Automobiles, to be specific for Engines (I dont think these information really matters). But I find Clearcase to be very slow is performing any the activities (accesing files, branching and labelling), in addition to which there are various other limitations. We have recently decided to research on some free & open source, distributed version control system which could be able to handle our large projects with speed and efficiency. This tool should be a full-fledged repository with complete history and full revision tracking capabilities, not dependent on network access or a central server. Branching and merging are fast and easy to do. It should have multisite development facility. With these above mentioned requirement, we have come up with some of the tools that are presently available in the market: GIT, Mercurial, Bazaar, Subversion, CVS, Perforce, and Visual SourceSafe.   • Batch Image compression tool for optimizing thousands of images

    Hi all, I'm maintaining a site that has thousands of images that have not been compressed nearly enough. The homepage weighs in at 1.5 Mb currently, and it could easily be way less that half that. I'm looking for some kind of tool that'll take a folder full of JPG pictures and will recompress them to their "optimal" compression value. Obviously, "optimal lossy compression setting" is an oxymoron, but I'm thinking maybe a tool that'll try different levels and compare the outputs to the input, and choose a "sweet spot" between size and destruction? Or even try whether PNG is a better option, many times it is, for "drawing" type stuff. Does anyone of you know any such tool? I'd have lots of fun coding one, but I bet someone already did and will save me 2 days. Alternatively, of course, anything that'll take all pictures in a folder and recompress them with a fixed quality level (say, 40) will also work, it'll just not make my inner nerd as happy, but it'll solve my problem just fine. (Ideally something that can run on Windows, ideally from the command line) Thank you!

    Hello ! Does anybody know about a good tool which help maintaining the database of an application ? I'm working on an application which uses a database (Microsoft Sql Server). When a development requires to change something in the database (e.g., structure, data migration...), we create a script (Transact-SQL script) and add it into our revision control tool (subversion - that tool also contains our code). Each script must add a line in a log table to keep a trace of all the scripts that have been ran into a database. In order to build a database for our application, one needs to run all scripts ordered by their creation date. I'm not really happy with this technique notably because it make application migration a bit hard. If we want to install a new version of the application somewhere, e.g., migrate from version 1.3 to 2.1, we must get all the scripts between these two versions. Then run them and ensure that everything is done in a transaction... For sure we could built home-made tools to help but I wonder if some tools already exists to do that kind of job.

    I have several config files in my .net applications which I would like to merge application settings elements etc. I was about to begin doing it manually as I usually do, however thought there must be an XML diff GUI tool available somewhere. The tool would be able to go to the element level to compare and display the differences etc. However Google gave no substantive free tool results and no hints for anything of value. Is such a tool available? That is very useful? For free? Thanks in advance. :) Edit: Here is a bit of clarification of the functionality that would turn my error-prone, tedious manual job into a 1-minute simpler task (and potential to automate): In KDiff3, you can do a diff/merge of entire directories. There is a hierarchical diff which is very accurate, user-friendly and clear. I was interested in finding a similar solution, however instead of directory hierarchy, an XML element hierarchy. If there is no such open source software, I am considering creating one on CodePlex to provide this functionality.

    I want to find the exact time where a media file is currently paused at (or playing) in a running Totem instance using D-Bus. To be precise, what I want is available from the Totem python console (if the plugin exists and is enabled) by the following command: >>> print totem_object.props.current_time 732616 which I understand is milliseconds. So far: I've never used D-Bus before, so I'm in the process of going through D-Bus and python-dbus documentation. I've also fired up D-Feet and found that the org.gnome.Totem bus name and the /Factory object I can use the org.freedesktop.DBus.Properties interface methods.     Having difficulty re-installing Firefox, after an installation to resolve places.sqlite issues. It appears that I'm trapped in circular dependency hell. Need to resolve firefox dependency hell to attempt to resolve Tomcat6 project dependencies (don't ask), ASAP. Have been trying for hours.   • Host a IWpfTextView in a custom tool for a Visual Studio Extension

    I'm trying to create a IWpfTextView and then put it into a custom tool window. I can create the view, read a file to populate the ITextBuffer and display the view into my tool. I cannot edit the code at all and the code is not syntax highlighted. What steps am I missing to make this a full fledged editor?
