  • Trying to turn an old computer into a server. Where do I start?

    - by Stanton.Sculpture
My old computer is a mac powerbook g4 that I am considering turning into an Ubuntu Server for my house of eight to share movies and music and whatever. I've never even thought about doing this kind of stuff before so I don't even know where to start. Can someone point me in the right direction? My Concerns: Most of my house mates have macs. Will there be compatibility issues? Can I make it a wireless network? My old powerbook g4 might not have the balls. Money Thanks!

  • Documents stored on separate internal drive, Ubuntu doesn't notice on startup

    - by PlanoAlto
My machine has Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS running side-by-side on a single hard drive with GRUB bootloader, each with 500 GB storage. I keep my personal documents on a separate 1TB hard drive so they remain isolated from any changes I make to the OS drive, but when Ubuntu starts it does not seem to notice my documents drive. While I've installed and worked with Ubuntu 12.04 Server x32 before, using it as a desktop OS is new to me. I use my documents drive for all of my personal data, including wallpapers and music, so it is imperative that Ubuntu recognize it on startup. Concerning the two specific examples: Ubuntu loads with the default blue-colored desktop instead of my desired picture of the spectacular Carina galaxy. When I right-click the desktop and select "Change Desktop Background", it wakes up from its amnesia and loads the proper background. As for my music, Rhythmbox defaults to an empty library upon reboot, forcing me to reload the settings manually each time. This gets quite tedious because I certainly can't work to my full potential without my music. The second thing I would like to address is making Ubuntu point the documents directories in ~ to their appropriate counterparts on the 1TB documents drive. I realize that this question is not new, but when I create the symbolical links, they established themselves inside the directories and did not convert the directories themselves into symbolical links. I also prefer not to move the files themselves from their current location on the 1TB drive. I believe this would also help the Rhythmbox library problem as well considering it's a default directory for the music player. Excerpt from fstab: proc /proc proc nodev, noexec, nosuid 0 0 # / was on /dev/sdb6 during installation UUID=057ac83e-76ad-460d-86e5-b6d46e9b1d80 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1 # swap was on /dev/sdb7 during installation #UUID=1183df90-23fc-44e4-aa17-4e7c9865d5cb none swap sw 0 0 /dev/mapper/cryptswap1 none swap sw 0 0 That's enough content for one question. I really like the Ubuntu experience so far since it doesn't treat me like an idiot out of the box (can't say the same for Windows) so I can't wait to hear from the community! Thanks for your help in advance.

  • How to set gtk file chooser button default to user's home folder

    - by Connel
I've got a gtk file chooser button on my application I am writing in c# using Mono Develop. I would like to set the file chooser's default location to the users' home directory regardless of what user is running it. I've tried the ~/ short cut - fchFolder1.SetCurrentFolder("~/"); - but this did not work. I was just wondering if there was a value that the gtk file chooser used to refer to the users home directory? Thanks

  • iPad orientation on launch problem in portrait (bottom home button)

    - by edie
Hi.... I've an iPad app that supports all orientation... my problem was on the start up of the application. In case of landScapeRight and landScapeLeft and portrait(top home button) the views shows correctly but when the app start in portrait (bottom home button) the views show in landscape mode... I've implemented the - (void) willRotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)toInterfaceOrientation duration:(NSTimeInterval)duration - (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)interfaceOrientation When I change the apps orientation the views shows correctly.

  • "Home" of Javascript similar to python.org?

    - by drewk
Perl, Ruby, Python, Javascript / ecmascript, PHP are all similar in the sense of being open source, open documentation, multi-platform, etc. Perl has http://www.perl.org Ruby has http://www.ruby-lang.org Python has http://www.python.org PHP has http://php.net Is there a "home" for javascript in the same sense as these other languages? When I say "home" I mean the go-to place for official documentation, specifications, source code of the language, examples, etc.

  • home directory and .emacs file in Windows 7

    - by prosseek
I installed emacs 23.3.1 in c:/emacs-23.3. Following the hints in this page, I updated the site-start.el to set HOME environment variable. (setenv "HOME" "c:/users/USER/emacs") And I made c:/users/USER/.emacs (like I did in unix/mac) to write the code for using slime, but it doesn't seem to start slime correctly. Is this a correct way of setting emacs in Windows 7? Where do I put the .emacs file?

  • Creating Python C module from Fortran sources on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

    - by Botondus
In a project I work on we use a Python C module compiled from Fortran with f2py. I've had no issues building it on Windows 7 32bit (using mingw32) and on the servers it's built on 32bit Linux. But I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS 64bit on my laptop that I use for development, and when I build it I get a lot of warnings (even though I've apparently installed all gcc/fortran libraries/compilers), but it does finish the build. However when I try to use the built module in the application, most of it seems to run well but then it crashes with an error: * glibc detected /home/botondus/Envs/gasit/bin/python: free(): invalid next size (fast): 0x0000000006a44760 ** Warnings on running *f2py -c -m module_name ./fortran/source.f90* customize UnixCCompiler customize UnixCCompiler using build_ext customize GnuFCompiler Could not locate executable g77 Found executable /usr/bin/f77 gnu: no Fortran 90 compiler found gnu: no Fortran 90 compiler found customize IntelFCompiler Could not locate executable ifort Could not locate executable ifc customize LaheyFCompiler Could not locate executable lf95 customize PGroupFCompiler Could not locate executable pgf90 Could not locate executable pgf77 customize AbsoftFCompiler Could not locate executable f90 absoft: no Fortran 90 compiler found absoft: no Fortran 90 compiler found absoft: no Fortran 90 compiler found absoft: no Fortran 90 compiler found absoft: no Fortran 90 compiler found absoft: no Fortran 90 compiler found customize NAGFCompiler Found executable /usr/bin/f95 customize VastFCompiler customize GnuFCompiler gnu: no Fortran 90 compiler found gnu: no Fortran 90 compiler found customize CompaqFCompiler Could not locate executable fort customize IntelItaniumFCompiler Could not locate executable efort Could not locate executable efc customize IntelEM64TFCompiler customize Gnu95FCompiler Found executable /usr/bin/gfortran customize Gnu95FCompiler customize Gnu95FCompiler using build_ext I have tried building a 32bit version by installing the gfortran multilib packages and running f2py with -m32 option (but with no success): f2py -c -m module_name ./fortran/source.f90 --f77flags="-m32" --f90flags="-m32" Any suggestions on what I could try to either build 32bit version or correctly build the 64bit version? Edit: It looks like it crashes right at the end of a subroutine. The 'write' executes fine... which is strange. write(6,*)'Eh=',Eh end subroutine calcolo_involucro The full backtrace is very long and I'm not sure if it's any help, but here it is: *** glibc detected • We have moved to larger offices

    - by Chris Houston
First of all we should probably apologise for the complete lack of blogging over the last 6 months! As web developers we are constantly telling our clients that they should keep their blogs up to date and it seems we have been ignoring our own advice. That being said, we have been very busy moving offices and helping our new host QV Offices setup their new business. As well as all the moving we have not been sitting on our hands, we have built the new site for DairyMaster over in Ireland as well as a separate private website for their global distributor network. As Umbraco Gold Partners we have found more and more that we are working on projects where we are the silent development partners, so although we cannot talk publicly about a lot of the sites we develop, we have some real beauties now in our portfolio :)Now that the dust has settled in our new office ( and has been hovered up! ) we are read for the new year and are looking forward to working on some exciting projects that are currently in the pipeline. We are also intending to run some Hacking sessions for Umbraco as we now have lots of space for developers to come and work with us, so if you have any ideas of a theme for an Umbraco Hackathon then do let us know. And with that it just remains to say Happy Christmas to you all and see you in the new year!

  • How to run a DHCP service on Windows 7 Home

    - by Joshua Lim
    I'm trying to setup a DHCP server on Windows 7 Home, tried using a couple of freeware which I found on the Internet but none seemed to work. What I did: On the Windows 7 machine which I install the DHCP Server with the range 192.168.1.12-192.168.1.256. I set the Gigabit Ethernet adapter to a static IP address of 192.168.1.11 and subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. When I did an IP config, it showed. Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Broadcom NetLink (TM) Gigabit Ethernet Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 8C-73-6E-75-A7-56 DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::196d:b6bb:8f93:2555%12(Preferred) IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.11(Preferred) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1 fec0:0:0:ffff::2%1 fec0:0:0:ffff::3%1 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled I connected another Window 7 machine to the "DHCP server" using a cross cable and set network adapter on that machine to automatically detect IP address. The client fails to acquire the correct IP address from the DHCP server and showed the autoconfigured IPv4 address instead. Here's the information returned by config /all on the client machine. Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection: Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Atheros AR8152/8158 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.20) Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 54-04-A6-40-96-4B DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::4885:4082:5572:5a85%12(Preferred) Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.90.133(Preferred) Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0 Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : DHCPv6 IAID . . . . . . . . . . . : 341050534 DHCPv6 Client DUID. . . . . . . . : 00-01-00-01-17-54-78-12-00-08-CA-46-4C-5A DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1 fec0:0:0:ffff::2%1 fec0:0:0:ffff::3%1 NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled DHCP client are running on both machines.   • View Docs and PDFs Directly in Google Chrome

    - by Matthew Guay
Would you like to view documents, presentations, and PDFs directly in Google Chrome?  Here’s a handy extension that makes Google Docs your default online viewer so don’t have to download the file first. Getting Started By default, when you come across a PDF or other common document file online in Google Chrome, you’ll have to download the file and open it in a separate application. It’d be much easier to simply view online documents directly in Chrome.  To do this, head over to the Docs PDF/PowerPoint Viewer page on the Chrome Extensions site (link below), and click Install to add it to your browser. Click Install to confirm that you want to install this extension. Extensions don’t run by default in Incognito mode, so if you’d like to always view documents directly in Chrome, open the Extensions page and check Allow this extension to run in incognito. Now, when you click a link for a document online, such as a .docx file from Word, it will open in the Google Docs viewer. These documents usually render in their original full-quality.  You can zoom in and out to see exactly what you want, or search within the document.  Or, if it doesn’t look correct, you can click the Download link in the top left to save the original document to your computer and open it in Office.   Even complex PDF render very nicely.  Do note that Docs will keep downloading the document as you’re reading it, so if you jump to the middle of a document it may look blurry at first but will quickly clear up. You can even view famous presentations online without opening them in PowerPoint.  Note that this will only display the slides themselves, but if you’re looking for information you likely don’t need the slideshow effects anyway.   Adobe Reader Conflicts If you already have Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader installed on your computer, PDF files may open with the Adobe plugin.  If you’d prefer to read your PDFs with the Docs PDF Viewer, then you need to disable the Adobe plugin.  Enter the following in your Address Bar to open your Chrome Plugins page: chrome://plugins/ and then click Disable underneath the Adobe Acrobat plugin. Now your PDFs will always open with the Docs viewer instead. Performance Who hasn’t been frustrated by clicking a link to a PDF file, only to have your browser pause for several minutes while Adobe Reader struggles to download and display the file?  Google Chrome’s default behavior of simply downloading the files and letting you open them is hardly more helpful.  This extension takes away both of these problems, since it renders the documents on Google’s servers.  Most documents opened fairly quickly in our tests, and we were able to read large PDFs only seconds after clicking their link.  Also, the Google Docs viewer rendered the documents much better than the HTML version in Google’s cache. Google Docs did seem to have problem on some files, and we saw error messages on several documents we tried to open.  If you encounter this, click the Download link in the top left corner to download the file and view it from your desktop instead. Conclusion Google Docs has improved over the years, and now it offers fairly good rendering even on more complex documents.  This extension can make your browsing easier, and help documents and PDFs feel more like part of the Internet.  And, since the documents are rendered on Google’s servers, it’s often faster to preview large files than to download them to your computer. • Android Home Screen Widget (icon, label - style)

    - by dmulligan
I'm trying to create an icon/widget (1 cell x 1 cell) that can be placed on the home screen of android. The widget will look and act exactly like the other standard shortcuts in android. It will have an icon and under that a label, it will be selectable with the trackball (highlight able) it will be highlighted when it is selected/clicked. How do I go about creating this home screen widget? Do I have to create the widget myself using code/xml or is there some standard xml, style, theme, code that I can use to ensure that the widget will have the same style/theme as the other home screen widgets? I currently have the following res/drawable/corners.xml <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <shape xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/Corners"> <stroke android:width="4dp" android:color="#CC222222" /> <padding android:left="4dp" android:top="1dp" android:right="4dp" android:bottom="1dp" /> <corners android:radius="4dp" /> </shape> res/layout/widget.xml <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <LinearLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/Widget" android:layout_width="72dip" android:layout_height="72dip" android:orientation="vertical" android:focusable="true" android:gravity="center_horizontal" style="@android:style/Widget" > <ImageView android:id="@+id/WidgetIcon" android:src="@drawable/icon" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="50dip" android:paddingTop="3dip" android:gravity="center" /> <TextView android:id="@+id/WidgetLabel" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:text="@string/app_name" android:textSize="15dip" android:background="@drawable/corners" /> </LinearLayout> The resulting widget looks some what close, but its not selectable, it doesn't get highlighted when clicked and the label isn't exactly in the correct location or the correct style. Any ideas, if there is a correct way to do this, or should I just keep working away on the above until I am closer?

  • Weird onclick behavior of images on home screen widget

    - by kknight
I wrote a home screen widget with one image on it. When the image is clicked, browser will be opened for a url link. Generally, it is working. But a weird thing is that, when I click background, then click the picture, the browser will not be open. Until I click the second time on the picture, the browser opens. The steps to reproduce is below: Click on the home screen widget background. Click on the image on the home screen. The browser is not opened. Click on the image again. The browser is opened. If I didn't click on the background, the image will react to click very well, i.e. browser will be open when the image is clicked the first time. The widget XML file is as below: <RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@+id/widget" android:layout_width="320dip" android:layout_height="200dip" android:background="@drawable/prt_base" > <ImageView android:id="@+id/picture1" android:layout_width="134dip" android:layout_height="102dip" android:layout_marginLeft="62dip" android:layout_marginTop="6dip" android:scaleType="center" android:src="@drawable/picture1" /> </RelativeLayout> The code to set OnClick on the picture1 ImageView is as below: defineIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_VIEW, Uri .parse("http://www.google.com")); pendingIntent = PendingIntent .getActivity(context, 0 /* no requestCode */, defineIntent, 0 /* no flags */); updateViews.setOnClickPendingIntent( picId, pendingIntent); Anyone knows what's wrong? Thanks.

  • Misplaced Layout after "home"-button and/or powersave screen

    - by TiGer
Hi, I have an app which also includes a service with a Notification. Right now I am experiencing the foillowing problem : I start my app which will work fine after couple of minutes the powersave kicks in and I get a black screen I (or hte user) click the Menu-button to dismiss the black screen and to unlock the screenlock Now my (fullscreen) app will have "moved" like 30-40 pixels downwards, creating an ugly black border or hole. When I move the scrollwheel it will move up and down, and when I press the Menu button (showing my ap''s menu) it will "fix" the view... or I start my app which will work fine I press the Home button exiting the app, my service though will (correctly) keep running when selecting my service from the notification-bar I will get once again : -Now my (fullscreen) app will have "moved" like 30-40 pixels downwards, creating an ugly black border or hole. When I move the scrollwheel it will move up and down, and when I press the Menu button (showing my ap''s menu) it will "fix" the view... Any idea what the problem is ? The app is running on a ADP2 with Android 1.6 Thanks in advance ! Ok, after some testing I noticed that if I don't run the Activity on Fullscreen, but just leave the TtileBar away this won't happen... Still this is no solution to me, I want it to be fullscreen... Noticed siomething else, when I have the View with the black bar, and I press the home button it will "refresh" the View correctly just before actually going to the Home Screen :(

  • Intranet Video-streaming

    - by Jonathan Sampson
What's a good option for home-video-streaming. For example, somebody may use a laptop webcam to stream their baby's crib allowing them to monitor it from the main home PC. In this case, I wouldn't want to do it across the wire with skype, but instead keep it on my local network. What options exist to make this easy to achieve?
