• Vista Home Premium won't upload

  Hi, I have a sony vaio laptop(VGN-FW31J) running windows Vista Home Premium . I've had it over a year and file upload in a browser has never worked on any website in any browser(IE, Firefox, Chrome). I can select a file and the upload starts running but I always get a timeout. Sometimes it has worked once out of many attempts but only if the file is very small( < 50k). FTP does work. I've tried the following: Disabling anti virus Disabling firewall Can anyone help me here? i'm wondering if this is a vista problem or a vaio problem. Cheers

• Ultimate way to use Picasa in a home network

  I've been trying a lot of approaches but still didn't find any effective solution. I want gigs of photos in a network drive (a IOMega Home Media Network Drive, plugged to my wifi router). I'd like to do 2 things: Do a Picasa import process of all the photos in the drive, making Picasa organize all the files in a year/month folder structure physically. Ideally, the import target directory should be the same network drive, otherwise I should move all the imported files in my local computer back to the drive myself. Share the Picasa database over the network, by uploading it to the network drive. Have me and other members of the family point our Picasas to the network database, and see the photos as well as make changes (tag faces, create logical albums, etc) into it. Is ANY possibility to accomplish this? Or should I be looking for another photo management app, and in that case do you know such one? Thank you!

• Jail user to home directory while still allowing permission to create and delete files/folders

  I'm trying to give a client SFTP access to the root directory of their site on my server (Ubuntu 10.10) so they can manager their website themselves. While I have been successful in jailing a user to a directory and giving them SFTP access; they are only allowed to create and delete new files in sub directories (the directories they own). This means that I must give them access to the parent directory to the root of their site. How can I limit them to the root of their site (for example public_html) while still allowing them the ability create and delete files. All the tutorials I have read suggest that the root must be the owner of the user's home directory, which prevents them from write access inside that directory. I'm relatively new to managing my own server so any advice would be very grateful. Many thanks.

I am thinking of following setup if thats [possible because i have not worked with biger companies , so i want to know how can i do that I am thinking of creating 5 virtual machines VM1 will be database server and will have all databases like MySQL , postgreSQL , sqlite , mongodb and Oracle VM2 will be the web server and will have Apache and Tomcat installed VM3 will be the Filse server where i will have all the web sites file VM4 , i am thinking of as main box where i can install ptyon php java j2ee sites but not sure VM5 will have the server 22008 for c# .net applications my main idea is to be able to host the sites in php, python , java j2ee with spring Is my setup ok or i am missing few things. Please guide me with correct setup so that i can learn stuff

• Windows Vista Home memory usage problem [closed]

  Hi, I have a Windows Vista Home laptop from a client that is running on 1GB ram. The laptop is used for super basic things, word, internet, outlook, etc. What makes zero sense is that the RAM is being completely consumed, causing the PC to hang sometimes when it can't take it anymore. However, in task manager, the processes appear to only be consuming maybe 100MB (Private Working Set). The client literally has a simple setup, and is running kaspersky, though that does not seem to be indicating it is the cause of the excessive memory usage. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to resolve the memory issue or how to track down what is actually happening and fix it? G

• iPhone VPN to iTunes Home Sharing [migrated]

  my goal is to set up a VPN on a Windows machine that contains my iTunes library then connect to that VPN with my iPhone and be able to utilize Home Sharing remotely. I have read that this can easily be set up if the iTunes library is on a Mac (Network Beacon and YazSoft ShareTool are two products I quickly found). I can't find anyone who has had success on a Windows machine, though. In my thinking, there are two options (aside from buying a Mac): 1.) Existing utility that takes care of this for me (like the Mac-only options listed above) and is compatible with iPhone (Hamachi is NOT compatible with iPhone VPN) 2.) Manually configure a VPN to allow Bonjour multicast (can't find any information on this) FYI my router is a Linksys WRT54GL running Tomato 1.28

• Hooking domain to home server (WinServer2008) with specific port

  Alright, I'm asking two things here. First of all, if i purchase a domain let's say myhomeserver.com, am I able to make the default port go through a different port instead of the default port 80? (that is without having to do myhomeserver.com:5000 for example). Also this should be without blocking other ports (so no stealth forwarding to myhomeserver.com:5000 i think) Secondly, How could I go about hooking a domain to a windows 2008 server? I've seen it on linux but no clue how to do it on windows if it's even possible. I know I'm asking a lot here, just some tips are appereciated. Also, yes I know, using a home server is horrible for security and preformance and whatnot, I understand this already, thanks ^^

• Acer Aspire 7750-6801 windows 7 Home Premium x64 not charging properly [closed]

  I have an Acer Aspire 7750-6801 laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OS. The issue is that it will only charge sometimes when plugged in. I thought it might be a hardware issue, so I tried charging with the laptop off, and it works fine. Also when in Linux, or any other environment other than Windows, it also charges fine. The intermittent charging issue ONLY presents itself when in Windows. I've tried the following: Open Device Manager Under 'Batteries->', I uninstalled 'Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery' Then re-installed using 'Scan for hardware changes' Still no luck. It's quite urgent, any help would be appreciated as I am totally at a loss...

• Mapping Ctrl+Arrow for Home/End/PageUp/Down

  I'm using Windows 7 on Dell New Inspiron 14z Ultrabook. It doesn't have Home/End/PgUp/PgDn keys. Instead I have to use Fn + arrow keys. Can I re-map those to Ctrl + arrows or Alt + arrows or Shift + arrows? That way I could go one page up and down with only my right hands rather than with the left hand on the Fn key and right hand on arrow key. Also, volume up and down is assigned to FnF11 and FnF12. Can I re-map them to F11 and F12? Existing functions assigned to F11 and F12 will be replaced by FnF11 and FnF12. Is it possible?

• Change the Default Font Size in Word

  Are you frustrated by always having to change the font size before you create a document it Word?  Here’s how you can end that frustration and set your favorite default font size for once and for all! Microsoft changed the default font font to 11 point Calibri in Word 2007 after years of 12 point Times New Roman being the default.  Although it can be easily overlooked, there are ways in Word to change the default settings to anything you want.  Whether you want to change your default to 12 point Calibri or to 48 point Comic Sans…here’s how to change your default font settings in Word 2007 and 2010. Changing Default Fonts in Word To change the default font settings, click the small box with an arrow in the right left corner of the Font section of the Home tab in the Ribbon.   In the Font dialog box, choose the default font settings you want.  Notice in the Font box it says “+Body”; this means that the font will be chosen by the document style you choose, and you are only selecting the default font style and size.  So, if your style uses Calibri, then your font will be Calibri at the size and style you chose.  If you’d prefer to choose a specific font to be the default, just select one from the drop-down box and this selection will override the font selection in your document style. Here we left all the default settings, except we selected 12 point font in the Latin text box (this is your standard body text; users of Asian languages such as Chinese may see a box for Asian languages).  When you’ve made your selections, click the “Set as Default” button in the bottom left corner of the dialog. You will be asked to confirm that you want these settings to be made default.  In Word 2010, you will be given the option to set these settings for this document only or for all documents.  Click the bullet beside “All documents based on the Normal.dotm template?”, and then click Ok. In Word 2007, simply click Ok to save these settings as default. Now, whenever you open Word or create a new document, your default font settings should be set exactly to what you want.  And simply repeat these steps to change your default font settings again if you want. Editing your default template file Another way to change your default font settings is to edit your Normal.dotm file.  This file is what Word uses to create new documents; it basically copies the formatting in this document each time you make a new document. To edit your Normal.dotm file, enter the following in the address bar in Explorer or in the Run prompt: %appdata%\Microsoft\Templates This will open your Office Templates folder.  Right-click on the Normal.dotm file, and click Open to edit it.  Note: Do not double-click on the file, as this will only create a new document based on Normal.dotm and any edits you make will not be saved in this file.   Now, change any font settings as you normally would.  Remember: anything you change or enter in this document will appear in any new document you create using Word. If you want to revert to your default settings, simply delete your Normal.dotm file.  Word will recreate it with the standard default settings the next time you open Word. Please Note: Changing your default font size will not change the font size in existing documents, so these will still show the settings you used when these documents were created.  Also, some addins can affect your Normal.dotm template.  If Word does not seem to remember your font settings, try disabling Word addins to see if this helps. Conclusion Sometimes it’s the small things that can be the most frustrating.  Getting your default font settings the way you want is a great way to take away a frustration and make you more productive. • Microsoft Office 2003 document (Excel and Word) intermitently, takes 30 seconds to load

  I am trying to figure out why a simple .XLS EXCEL workbook is taking, randomly, 30 seconds to open. Before answering: Please, bear mind the following: Problem symptoms Hanging is intermitent and it takes exactly 30 seconds; During hanging there is no cpu or disk activity; It only happens during document load. Every runs smooth after that; Windows Explorer.exe hangs on folder, but all other folders, system and applications are still responsive; There are no consecutive hangings. I have to wait for while to reproduce this behaviour; All samples documents are located on a local drive (C:\BPI); The no document has has macros and have any addins usage; The problem does occurs on others files extensions like .PDF, for example; Office 2003 is being used for several years; The computer is running Windows XP; Computer has several network mapped drives, all addressed to main file server; Recently, main fileserver was replaced by Windows 2011 SBS Standard Edition What I have done so far I have traced machine Explorer.exe, using Process Monitor, added Duration column, and filtered by Duration 1. That's is how I found that hanging was taking exactly 30 seconds. For further information, please refer to Oliver Salzburg tutorial. Using Process Monitor, I have also figured out than five operations were taking most of sample collecting duration. Looking at sample image below, column Operation below you will notice that one single operation was taking 29 seconds; I have tried different documents (.xls and .doc), all of them smaller than 30 KB; I have, temporarily, removed all shortcuts on User Document's folder that were pointing to network drives or shares; I have runned CCleaner to fix registry issues; I made sure that there were no external links on tested workbook or word documents; I have reproduced this behaviour for hours; I have extensivelly researched for hours on the web; Process Monitor's collected and filtered data

  I've a java process that is working on some large data set in memory. I've seen it crash with a SIGSEGV signal sometimes, so i was wondering some potential causes and fixes could do. • libreoffice on Mint14 problem : save as 2003 doc

  When saving a doc file (MS office 2003) as a doc file, libreoffice crashes and the file without any updates goes into recovery mode ... I installed mint14 from scratch and did not modify anything the odd thing with mint13 and libreoffice, there is no problem (save as works fine) with an upgraded mint14, there is no problem (save as works fine) this happed on acer one d522 machine and a no-name PC (amd based) both are running a 64 bit version of mint (virgin install) the other machines : - acer X1370 upgraded mint14 and - a dell 1520 (mint13 out of the box) do not show this proble please help... something I forgot or a bug? Here's the exact message: "Setup can't find a version of Microsoft Office on your computer. If Office is installed on a disk or network share, click the browse button to select the appropriate disk or share... (etc.)" No matter which directory or drive I pick (various Office installs, the old Visio install, various subdirectories) it gives the following message: "The path you have chosen does not point at a qualifying upgradeable product. Click 'Retry' to try again or 'Cancel' to quit setup." Any ideas? This is a legit copy of Visio 2007 (purchased from Amazon) and the copy of Visio 2000 is legit as well. I'm not sure what exactly the installer is looking for that it would consider a "qualifying upgradeable product". A specific file?

• How can I change the default location/action of 'Open Outlook Data File' in Outlook 2010?

  I have recently deployed a Remote Desktop Host server that functions as a remote Microsoft Office 2010 work space for users. In part of the locking down of this server I have installed all programs on the D: drive and, through the use of Group Policy, hidden all the drives on the server from standard users. In addition to hiding these drives I am not allowing users to save anything locally (on the server) or open Libraries. However one of the functions of the server is to provide the Outlook client. Often users will have the .PST file stored on a network location and want to open this in Outlook. Can I change the default action or location that File Open Open Outlook Data File looks or tries to pull the file from? The default location seems to be under Users / Libraries. When click 'Open' you get a warning: This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Clicking OK drops the user into a small menu that shows attached network drives under Computer. Can I instead have the 'Open' click drop the users in a defined network drive or just open computer and allow them to select a share? I don't want them to see the error message. A solution that looks to have been used for Office 2000/03 is: Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\<version>\Outlook Value name: ForceOSTPath Value type: REG_EXPAND_SZ Value: path to your storage folder I am not sure if there is a better way to do this now OR if this even works with Office 2010.

• Synchronizing the SamAccountName Property using Windows Azure Active Directory Sync Tool

  Using this official documentation as a guide, I would expect the SamAccountName property to sync from my on-premise AD to Office 365. I think that it used to do exactly that, but now it seems that it doesn't so much sync the attribute as it does create an entirely new, unlinked value and store it in Office 365. This has caused some minor issues for me (broken scripts, annoying permissions management, etc.) and may be part of a more major issue regarding ADFS authentication. On-Premise PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-ADUser jdoe -Properties SamAccountName | fl SamAccountName SamAccountName : jdoe Office 365 Sync'ed Objects PS C:\Windows\system32> Get-Mailbox jdoe | fl SamAccountName SamAccountName : $1A7H20-K1LCOJFFBHGS I understand how to work around this issue in my scripts -- there exists the ImmutableId property which can be mapped back to the on-premise GUID. As far as the issue I'm having with ADFS, I'm less certain how to proceed and if this is causing my issues. At this point I really would just like some verification that I'm not crazy and that this used to be sync'ed at some point in the past and that Office 365 broke it relatively recently. I also think that MS documentation should perhaps be updated to exclude SamAccountName from the list of synchronized properties on the page I linked.

• How to resize(increase) a root+home cloned partition from a smaller hdd?

  Here is my story: I had a hd failing so I cloned it with dd to larger 500gb hd. It seemed to have worked well, but I have all this unallocated free space at the end of the disk (230gb). I tried to used gparted from a liveUSB to allocate all this space to my root+home partition (other than that I only have a small extended partition with the swap). It won't let me do this. I can only create another partition, or allocate the free space to the extend partition. I can however reduce the size of the root+home partition since I wasn't using all the space Is there a way to put this free space to my root+home partition after all? Or do I have to go with another partition. If so I'd like to separate my home from the root, reduce the root partition and create a ext4 logical home partition. What would be the best safest way to do this? Thanks so much in advance, aloha

• Push a bookmark to a user's home screen in Android

  Android 2.1 (not sure how much that matters) My test hardware is a Motorola Droid (not sure how much that matters either) I want to push a bookmark/internet-shortcut to a user's home screen as a result of them clicking on a link - via their browser of choice. I know they can usually set the bookmark themselves and then choose to put it on their home screen. But I'd like to provide a link like "Put a shortcut to this page on your home screen" that takes care of everything kind of in the background/underneath. Is this even possible? What parts of the framework would I need access to to make it happen?

• Detect when home button is pressed iOS

  I have several iOS apps that all use the same port to listen for a network beacon. On the main view I use viewWillDisappear to close the port when another view is opened, which was working great. Then I noticed if I pressed the home button from the main view controller without opening another view to close the port, then the port stays open and non of my other apps can listen on that port any more. I then tried using viewWillUnload, but that doesn't seem to get called when I press the home button. -(void)viewWillUnload { //[super viewWillUnload]; NSLog(@"View will unload"); [udpSocket close]; udpSocket = nil; } View will unload is never displayed in the console, which leads me to believe that the method is never getting called. Is there a way to detect when the home button is pressed so I can close my port?

• Programmable Home Security Alarm [closed]

  I don't ask for recommendation! (just wanted to say that; anyway it doesn't matter now as the question is closed) I've seen some advertisements about home alarms that notifies me that something is happening in my house. None of them mentioned programmability (with real programming language like e.g C, assembler, whatever). As a programmer I'd like to have a possibility to add some behaviour, that is not part of the alarm itself. This might be: take snapshots of all cameras in a house and send it to some email send email, twitter message, skype message to some predefined account send email to a police (silly, I know) start turning the lights on and off (scary, right?) etc. (would be veeery challenging with assembler, I know; but lets suppose I can use some more high level language) I don't expect that there is a alarm system capable of this stuff, that's why I'm looking for a programmable module. Question: Is it even possible? Is it good idea (my program could crash and cause instability of the system).

• Unzip individual files from multiple zip files and extract those individual files to home directory

  I would like to unzip individual files. These files have a .txt extension. These files also live within multiple zipped files. Here is the command I'm trying to use. unzip -jn /path/to/zipped/files/zipArchiveFile2011\*.zip /path/to/specific/individual/files/myfiles2011*.txt -d /path/to/home/directory/for/extract/ From my understanding, the -j option excludes directories and will extract only the txt files The -n option will not overwrite a file if it has already been extracted. I've also learned that the forward slash in /path/to/zipped/files/zipArchiveFile2011\*.zip is necessary to escape the wildcard (*) character. Here is sample of error messages I'm coming accross: Archive: /path/to/zipped/files/zipArchiveFile20110808.zip caution: filename not matched: /path/to/specific/individual/files/myfiles20110807.txt caution: filename not matched: /path/to/specific/individual/files/myfiles20110808.txt Archive: /path/to/zipped/files/zipArchiveFile20110809.zip caution: filename not matched: /path/to/specific/individual/files/myfiles20110810.txt caution: filename not matched: /path/to/specific/individual/files/myfiles20110809.txt I feel that I'm missing something very simple. I've tried using single quotes (') and double quotes (") around directory paths. But no luck.
