  • Web Scraper via Web Service API?

    How would I go about doing the following... I want to build a web service for my application to grab a piece of data from an external website, that requires the user to login. The website has no public API , hence the reason for the scrapper. Is there a library to perform the following functions? or what do I do? automate fill-in form, auto click Automate submit button check which URL the user has landed on, and redirect user to URL Grab data from label. EDIT: what im asking for is there a web service, library etc to make it easier to perform screen scrapping/automation functions???

    I've looked on SO and it seems that most people have been recomending books as the best iphone development resource due to the lack of resources on the web. I've seen the book the The Pragmatic Programmer: iPhone SDK development been recomended a few times. I'm planning to go buy a couple of books. Which should I go for? Please give reason :) A bit of background : I have a strong background in C and I've played around with Cocoa so something iphone specific would be best ( but I'm open for suggestions ;)) Update I'm not looking for simple listings of iphone SDK related books, I can google that ;) I want books that people are reading/have read and would recomend :) Final Update I just ordered my copy of Beginning iPhone Development: Exploring the iPhone SDK. My main reasons on chosing it are that it's already in print (unlike the pragmatic one) and I looked at the preview on their website and I liked it.

    I am developing a Windows Phone app where users can update a list. Each update, delete, add etc need to be stored in a database that sits behind a web service. As well as ensuring all the operations made on the phone end up in the cloud, I need to make sure the app is really responsive and the user doesn’t feel any lag time whatsoever. What’s the best design to use here? Each check box change, each text box edit fires a new thread to contact the web service? Locally store a list of things that need to be updated then send to the server in batch every so often (what about the back button)? Am I missing another even easier implementation?     I have two web applications (A) and (B). (A) is my primary web application. (B) is purely for content storage, such as file uploads by users of (A). What's best way to securely retrieve data from (B) into (A) but in a way that does not expose the data in (B) to potential discovery by third-parties over the public internet or nosy users of (A)? For example, if I use a HTML form POST from (A) to (B) to retrieve user data, and have a hidden form field called user_id=1, then someone could simply change this to user_id=2 and see the content owned by another user of the application. That would be a problem.

  • Ideal way/architecture to deliver large data over Web Services

    We are trying to design 6 web services, which will serve another client component. The client component requires data from the web service we are implementing. Now, the problem is, there is not 1 WS we are implementing, there is one WS which the client component hits, this initiates a series (5 more) of WSs which gather data from their respective data stores and finally provide the data back to the original WS, which then delivers the data back to the client component. So, if the requested data becomes huge, then, this will be a serious problem for our internal communication channel. So, what do you guys suggest? What can be done to avoid overloading of the communication channel between the internal WS and at the same time, also delivering the data to the client component.

  • iPhone app getting XML then refreshing it at intervals...

    I have an app which gets some data from the web via an XML document. I have this working fine and have followed apples SeismicXML example (uses NSURLRequest etc). I am very new to this so I have to admit that I do not totally understand all the code that gets the XML - but it is working. My problem is that my app may be running for some time so I want to be able to refresh the XML every now and again and check to see if it is different. If it is different I need to update my contents. Basically this means my questions are.... Is there a standard way of doing this? I was thinking of creating a timer to call the function which parses the XML but I can't figure out which function to call. If anyone can give me any pointers or even better examples of this it would be fab. Thanks

  • Can't get iPhone to Sync with MacBook running OS X.

    I can't get the iPhone to sync with my MacBook running OS X, I've re-installed OS X and iTunes and then it worked, however once the MacBook had been switched off and on again the iPhone wouldn't sync. I then deleted AppleMobileDevice.kext, DeviceLink.Framework, MobileDevice.Framework and AppleMobileDeviceSupport.pky and re-installed iTunes, this then solved the problem until the MacBook was turned off and then on again. I've run out of ideas. Many thanks Nicolas

    Hi, I want to connect to the SSH server on my jailbreaked iPhone via the USB connection (because that connection is much faster than WLAN) from MacOSX.     I am looking for free software to do batch conversions of divx video files to iPhone format. I have read the thread: http://superuser.com/questions/5784/looking-to-convert-video-to-iphone-format Handbrake works good for single files but it has very little customization with regards to files names and the batch functionality is not very good (or at least I can't get it to work very easily). Can anyone recommend a good batch converter? A script for Handbrake to do a batch for all in a specific directory would be useful even.

Now, as far as it looks, there doesn't seem to be a backquote (backtick) on the iPhone keyboard. Under the single quote key, I've found two curly/angled quotes, but those (’ and ‘) don't seem to do the trick... So, how do I create an inline code block from iPhone/Safari?

    My iPhone 3GS doesn´t show up in the Scanners and Cameras tool when I connect it via USB to Windows XP. Nor does the Camera Wizard pop up. How do I make Windows XP detect the device as a Camera? I currently have no way of downloading photos from the iPhone to my computer. iTunes does recognize the device, but it doesn't offer a way to synchronize photos. Thanks for your help.
