  • Windows 7 Not Recognizing Camera Nor iPhone as Camera

    I've been struggling with this one for a few days. I've recently upgraded an older computer to Windows 7 Home Premium. Neither my digital camera (A Canon SD1200IS) nor iPhone are ever detected as cameras, nor ever show up as accessable in Explorer. With the Canon camera, no driver is required. It's supposed to work with the default Windows 7 drivers. However, in the Control Panel's Device Manager, I'm always seeing a yellow icon next to the "Canon Digital Camera" device. I've uninstalled the device and let Windows attempt to reinstall, but it can never find a driver to install. With the iPhone, it's very similar. One big difference, though, is that iTunes can see the iPhone and back it up, etc. However, again when I go to the Device Manager, there's a yellow icon next to the iPhone. I've uninstalled iTunes, reinstalled, rebooted, deleted drivers, and let Window try to reinstall the driver, but it can never find the driver. So there seems to be some correlation that my machine can't detect cameras properly, and that it might be even a lower-level type of driver I'm struggling with. I know that USB however, does work, because I have have an external drive hooked into the machine. I've gone through the web and tried two hours worth of fixes, without success. I feel like if I can get the Canon camera detected, then the iPhone will be on it's way to being fixed too. BTW, I couldn't really find anything of use in the Event viewer. Any and all suggestions welcome.

    So, i am in the process of tweaking my spending and i need to change my backup plan... I am currently using a mix of JungleDisk and ZManda ZCB to backup files on my MacBook Pro, Main Windows Server Wrokstation, a dedicated Windows Server in a datacenter, and various other machines and file sources. The problem is the cost: this month, it has cost me about $90 to backup a little over 500Gb... This amount of data will increese over time too, since i am backing up Photos (24Mb RAW images + 4-8MB JPEGs), Videos (various cameras shooting 720p and 1080p), Music, Movies, TV shows and Apps from iTunes (though with iTunes cloud, this might not need to be backed up again) and source code... I have looked at the likes of Mozy, CrashPlan+ and Pro, Backblaze and Carbonite, but each have their problems: Mozy seems overly expenvice per gig at 50C Crashplan wont sell to me since i am outside the US (they hide it on their site... hidden in the FAQ section!) Backblaze dont support Windows Server Carbonite business pricing is $600 up front for 500Gb of storage... Fro $229, they will not backup Windows Servers. So, other than those, Jungle Disk (at 15c per Gig) or ZManda (also at 15c per Gig) what other options are there? what are other people using?

  • My iPod never finishes syncing and only syncs audio, not pictures or video - any ideas as to how I c

    My iPod classic 160GB worked well for a couple of years. I used to sync a lot of photos at full resolution to it, but this recently stopped working after I moved to Windows 7. iTunes is on latest version - 9.1.1.12 iPod software is up to date - 1.1.2 Windows 7 is fully up to date and patched The symptoms are that the iPod will start to sync, all audio (music and podcasts will sync successfully) but the syncing will then just appear to continue - itunes message: Syncing iPod. Do not Disconnect. This sync never completes - I have left it trying for days. I have tried resetting the iPod using the Restore button, whereupon it restarts sync from default options and again will sync audio, but nothing else. I suspect that something has gone wrong on the hard-drive - either a bad sector or some corrupt data. Is there a process I can go through to fix this? E.g. SpinRite or a format? If so how do I go about formatting an iPod and will it be recognised as an iPod after format and work as normal? Any advice on what to try next much appreciated?

This matter is URGENT. We believe that individuals are being falsely directed to this page and may be persuaded into divulging personal information to a criminal, if the content is not immediately disabled. Trying to understand. Some hacker hacked VPS, placed some file (?) with content that redirects to www.connet-itunes.fr/iTunesConnect.woasp? Then questions 1) how can I find the file? Where it may be located? url is URL: hxxp://111.11.111.111/ IP address, not domain name 2) What to do to protect VPS (with CentOS)? Any tutorial? Where may be security problem? I mean may be someone faced something similar....

    After being a long time iPod owner, I'm switching to the new Zune with its subscription model. I haven't bought a Zune yet but I'm planning on doing so within the next month or so. I have approximately 40gb worth of music and my girlfriend has her iPod music library around 30gb. I've been trying to figure out how to migrate all our music off of our laptops/desktops and centralize everything on my NAS. In sharing iPod music isn't too bad. Sharing from one machine to all is fairly easy within the iTunes player. As far as storing all the music on a NAS, again, iPods aren't too bad and imagine other systems aren't difficult. But I'm really new to the Zune and I'm beginning to run into some issues. My questions are: Is it possible to store all music from our iPods and Zune subscriptions and share music between the iPod/Zune within the same file share on my NAS? I'm sure it's possible to store music on a share, but I'm not sure how iTunes and the Zune software differs. Is there 3rd party software, maybe something like DoubleTwist that can sync based from NAS to multiple desktop/laptops? I've never used DoubleTwist but it's something that I found that looks close to being what I need. I've never quite done this myself so I'm trying to find a solution that can: a) store music on a network share; b) sync between different devices (zune/ipod) seamlessly.

  • Xbox Music ignores Asus FN media keys in Desktop Mode

    I have an Asus PRO64JQ laptop, and I recently upgraded to Windows 8. The FN keys stopped working, so I tried to install default drivers using the CD that came with my laptop. Unfortunately, the CD does not support Windows 8. Asus Support does not help me either. It seems that Asus does not support Windows 8 on my model, since I can't find it in their list of Windows 8 upgradable models. Also, the support page of my laptop does not allow me to select Windows 8 as OS. That's why I'm asking my question here. I fixed (most of) the FN keys by installing the ATKPackage, and I was happy to find out that the media keys (play/pauze, next, previous) works with the Xbox Music app. But the keys only work in the Metro UI. In Desktop Mode, pressing FN+? (play/pause) starts up Windows Media Player. Disabling Windows Media Player through the control panel stops it from popping up, but Xbox Music still only responds to them in the Metro UI. I remember that I had similar problems when I tried to make these media keys to work with iTunes on Windows 7. The fix there was a small iTunes plug-in. So tell me, do you know how to fix my problem?   • Audio server with best API?

    I'm a web dev, working in a small studio with a couple of other devs and some crayon-munchers (or, "designers"). Like all the best and trendiest creative studios, we have tunes. Our tunes consists of a set of speakers that whoever wants to can plug into their machine, and DJ their little socks off via iTunes, Spotify, VLC or whatever their music player of choice happens to be. Obviously, this lacks finesse. What we WANT is this: a single, dedicated machine running some sort of audio player (ideally Win-based, but a Linux flavour isn't impossible), that exposes an API. We (ie: me and the other devs) want to write a web-based client onto it, that'll let us remotely do all sorts of funky stuff like generating on-the-fly genre-based playlists, and voting for tracks, and making tea. My question - and please forgive me if this isn't the place for such a question, I was going to ask on Stackoverflow but that didn't seem right either - is this: what's the best player to start with? What can do all of this? I know VLC can function as a streaming server, but know nothing of any API it may have. I'd rather chop my pinky off than use iTunes, but if it does what we want, then...   • Disable Windows 7 taskbar grouping. Not combining.

    I've look near and far but I cannot find a way (setting or hack) to prevent Windows 7 from grouping taskbar buttons together that are "related". I'm not talking about the option to combine or collapse related buttons into one item. I can find that setting at: Taskbar and Start Menu Properties Taskbar Taskbar buttons: This is what I an not looking for: How to Enable or Disable Windows 7 Taskbar Button Grouping I'm talking about how Windows 7 seams to think that it's doing me a favor by grouping all my Google Chrome buttons together and grouping all my Explorer buttons together etc. My workflow in Windows XP was to use the program Taskbar Shuffle to allow me to reorganize my taskbar buttons into related task "groups" I was working on. For example: [Start Button] | [iTunes] [Outlook Express] [Chrome Gmail] [layered design folder] [Photoshop CS4] [exported images folder] [website root folder] [Dreamweaver CS4] [Chrome www.MyAwesomeWebsiteImBuilding.com] [Chrome Recent web search] [some unrelated folder] Windows 7 doesn't seem to let me do this.   • Override the bounce recipient address in exim4

    I have a small app that allows a user to share an item by generating an email to a supplied email address. We set the "from" and "reply to" values to be the sender's address, so that when the email reaches the recipient, it appears to have come from the sender. This works wonderfully except when an email gets bounced. Currently, on bounces, exim attempts to redeliver the message periodically while simultaneously sending error emails back to the sender. I'd rather have those emails basically routed to an empty mailbox somewhere as there's nothing really that the sender can do about it. I found some documentation on bounced emails here: http://www.exim.org/exim-html-4.67/doc/html/spec_html/ch46.html and it claims that "Exim sends a message to the original sender, or to an alternative configured address.", but it doesn't say exactly how to configure an alternative address. Ideas?

  • php APC uptime problem

    I am on LAMP with Alternative PHP Cache. It worked fine until yesterday when I updated the website and changed a few mySQL queries (I don't see the how it would affect APC opcode cache) Today I see that the load has increased on the server and I see in Alternative PHP Cache, that the uptime of APC is somewhere around 15 minutes then it gets restarted. At this point the APC cache is only about 20% full of the available 30Mb. Using for opcode cache only. During this 15 minutes the cache works fine (99,8% cache hits). After this unwanted restart the APC cache is empty. Why is it restarting? Where can I find the logs for it? Thanks, Hamlet

  • Can you recommend a robust OpenAPI 2.0 provider?

    Help me find a robust OpenID 2.0 provider! We're looking at various SSO solutions for our organization, and I would like to suggest OpenID as a viable option, since (a) there is good consumer support in a number of web applications, and (b) it's simpler to implement than Shibboleth, which is the alternative technology. However, this requires that we find a robust OpenID provider, ideally one meeting the 2.0 specification. The only solutions I've come across so far are: Atlassian Crowd This looks great, although the $4000 price tag may make it a tough sell. Community-ID This looks like an interesting idea, but I'm not sure the project quality is at a suitable level (yet). In particular, it's not clear if LDAP support actually works (which will be a requirement in our environment). Have you implemented OpenID in your environment? What are you using? Have you selected an alternative SSO technology?

  • Forward Windows Events Logs to Rsyslog

    Thanks for taking time to read this post. Basically I would like to forward Windows Events Logs from all my desktop clients to a linux box with rsyslog on. Rsyslog provide a Windows agent to do just that but its 40 euros per license and when you have x amount of machines that cost adds up. I was wondering if there is a FOSS alternative available I have tried searching the Google but haven't managed to find anything.   • How can I create an encrypted, bootable thumbdrive containing Linux?

    I want to have a bootable flash drive that's fully encrypted. I have not tested, but seem to like, TrueCrypt, which provides a fully encrypted system and has lots of other features I like (for instance, hidden volumes). Unfortunately, it seems, system encryption is only supported for Windows, although I'm not sure why. The crux here, I guess, is that you need a boot loader that is capable of asking for your password and decrypt the disk, at least the part that contains kernel and initrd. An alternative might be to have an unencrypted boot partition containing a more powerful system which will decrypt and mount the main partition. However, this brings up the question of whether you're introducing data leaks. Depending on the specific scenario, I may lack the experience to assess if this is a problem. So I'd strongly prefer a fully encrypted disk or a similarly straightforward alternative.

    in the environment where windows client computers are used to run putty to connect to multiple linux servers i'm considering moving away from password based authentication and using public/private key pairs with pass-phrases. using ssh-agent would be nice, but at the same time i'd like it to 'forget' the pass-phrases after given period of inactivity. it seems that putty's pageant does not provide such feature; what would you suggest as alternative? solutions that i'm considering: patching pageant code [might be tricky, code is probably quite rusty and project - sadly - stagnant] writing small custom application using GetLastInputInfo and killing pageant if the machine was idle for more than let's say 15 minutes [ yes, there'll be separate policy for locking the desktops as well ] using alternative ssh client and ssh agent. any suggestions? thanks!

  • Alternatives to amavis for RAM-bound server

    I'm running a small VPS server that works as web and mail server. It has only 256MB of RAM, and it's sucking 100MB of swap constantly. I've found that one of the culprits is amavis, taking about 30MB of resident memory, and would like to ditch it and use some alternative. I don't have much mail daily, so it being a bit slower wouldn't be a problem. I'd like to avoid Spamassassin altogether, if possible, because it's quite big even if used in offline mode. I'm already using RBLs and a few small blacklists, and used greylisting for a while but abandoned it because it gave me a few problems (don't remember which; I think it was related to not configuring properly white lists for several big ISPs). So, is there some alternative to amavis that I could use without much RAM (and if possible, CPU) usage? Thanks in advance.

    In our office, there are frequent eletric shortages that harm my desktop computer, so I wanted to install a UPS. However, my office-mates pointed me to papers talking about hazardous radiation from the UPS. The UPS manufacturers themselves recommend to put the UPS several meters away from humans, which is not possible because our office is small (the power is about 0.5 meters from us). As an alternative to UPS, my office-mates recommended that I switch to a laptop, which has a battery so it's immune to shortages. I have several questions: Is it true that the radiation from a laptop battery is lower than the radiation from a UPS? They do just the same thing - supply power using a battery! If the answer to 1 is yes - is there an alternative way to attach a battery, similar to a laptop battery, to a desktop computer? If the answer to 1 is no - how can I prove this to my office-mates, so that they let me use UPS?
