  Does "Value Restriction" mean that there is no higher order functional programming? I have a problem that each time I try to do a bit of HOP I get caught by a VR error. Example: let simple (s:string)= fun rq->1 let oops= simple "" type 'a SimpleType= F of (int ->'a-> 'a) let get a = F(fun req -> id) let oops2= get "" and I would like to know whether it is a problem of a prticular implementation of VR or it is a general problem that has no solution in a mutable type-infered language that doesn't include mutation in the type system.

• What do angle brackets around an eclipse perspective mean?

  I wrote a new perspective for our Eclipse RCP Project. The perspective worked fine, but because of a malconfiguration I had to revert to an earlier code-version in which this perspective didn't exist yet. The strange thing is it still gets shown in the "open perspective" Dialog. The only difference is, that it is now in angle brackets and appears two times. What do the angle brackets mean? (unresolved title perhaps?) And how can I get rid of these entries? Thanks a lot!

• iPhone SDK: My server doesn't support range header requests, does that mean it's impossible for me t

  I am currently developing an iPhone app, in which involves downloads of up to 300 mb. I have been told by my hosting service that my server does not support range header requests. However, when I download a file from my server using a download client, like safari download manager, resume options are available and work. Does this mean that they have a work around for servers that don't support range header requests and that I could possibly implement into my iPhone app? Or are they using a technique too complex to implement into the iPhone. If you know of a technique code samples will be greatly appreciated.

  Programmatically. (alt. programmically) I've never used it, but I see it in questions a lot, i.e. "How to programmatically determine [insert task here]". Firefox immediately tells me that neither of these two words are real (at least, it doesn't recognize them). I've also never seen them used anywhere but here. 1) What does it mean to do/determine something "programmatically"? 2) Why do so many people ask how to do/determine something "programmatically"? Isn't it assumed that, if you're asking how to do something on a programming help board, you're asking how to do it "programmatically"? 3) Why is it that I've never seen the word "programmatically" anywhere else?

  At the end of the README.txt file which is located in the example directory under solr, I find this line: NOTE: This Solr example server references SolrCell jars outside of the server directory with statements in the solrconfig.xml. If you make a copy of this example server and wish to use the ExtractingRequestHandler (SolrCell), you will need to copy the required jars into solr/lib or update the paths to the jars in your solrconfig.xml What does this mean? Do I have to make some adjustment before uploading solr to my server? Also, if you know, what is Solr-nightly:s difference to regular solr? The tutorial states "solr-nightly.zip" but on their download section I cant find it.

  I am just starting out with writing jQuery plugins. I wrote three small plugins but I have been simply copying the line into all my plugins without actually knowing what it means. Can someone tell me a little more about these? What does this do? (I know it extends jQuery somehow but is there anything else interesting to know about this) (function($) { })(jQuery); What is the difference between the following two ways of writing a plugin: Type 1: (function($) { $.fn.jPluginName = { }, $.fn.jPluginName.defaults = { } })(jQuery); Type 2: (function($) { $.jPluginName = { } })(jQuery); I could be way off here and maybe both mean the same thing. In some cases, this doesn't seem to be working in a plugin that I was writing using Type 1. Any idea why? But in either case, I would appreciate any explanation.

Context: After an extensive memory stress testing period - including running my iPad app with the iPod music player app playing, I am inclined to ignore the random yet infrequent memory warnings I am receiving. I am currently uploading a file and then trying to echo out an anchor linking to that file, but since I used mkdir() with 0700 permissions to upload the file, it won't allow me access to view the file.   Debugger is telling me this, when I run my app on device: Program received signal: “EXC_BAD_ACCESS”. mi_cmd_stack_list_frames: Not enough frames in stack. mi_cmd_stack_list_frames: Not enough frames in stack. I don't get information about where in code that happens. That's all I get. Any idea what that could mean? The app crashes after that. When the device is not connected to the mac, it still crashes, so not a debugger problem.

  I have an SAP BI Portal system and an SAP BW system. In the Visual Administrator of the BI Portal, section 'JCo RFC Provider' I have created some RFC listeners. In the SAP BW system (in transaction SM59), I have created, tested and activated the relevant RFC connections. When I start a JCo RFC Provider in the BI Portal the BW system that it communicates with produces these errors (displayed from SAP transaction SM21): Operating system call recv failed (error no. 104 ) Module nam Line Error text Caller.... Reason/cal nixxi.cp 5087 recv104 NiIRead recv Documentation for system log message Q0 I : The specified operating system call was returned with an error. For communication calls (receive, send, etc) often the cause of errors are network problems. It could also be a configuration problem at operating system level. (file cannot be opened, no space in the file system etc.). Additional specifications for error number 104 Name for errno number E_UNKNOWN_NO The meaning of the value stored in 'errno' is platform-dependent. The value which occurred here is unknown to the SysLog system. Either there is an incorrect error number in the SysLog message, or the tables TSLE2 or TSLE3 are not completely maintained. • What does "single-bit ECC errors were detected on the RAID controller" mean?

  I have a Dell T7600 with a Perc H710P RAID controller and 4 attached 3TB drives. Over the past few months the RAID controller has been intermittently reporting errors on boot: "no boot device found", "adapter at baseport is not responding", disks frequently reported as missing or failed. I have since replaced the RAID controller, the 4 hard drives, and finally the system's motherboard. After replacing the motherboard and rebooting a few times, I got the error Single bit ECC errors were detected on the RAID controller. Please contact technical support to resolve this issue. After rebooting about 20 more times, I haven't seen the ECC error. The system seems otherwise OK, except for the fact that the disk fans will sometimes start blowing at full blast when the the system is sitting completely idle and not stop until I reboot. Are the ECC errors in memory on the RAID controller? Or, does the RAID controller map in system memory, and the ECC errors are really in system memory? Or, are the ECC errors in the 1GB cache that resides in the RAID controller?

  i'm playing around w/ LVM on a centos domU in a xen-based vps. I'm in rescue mode and I've created one physical volume (pvcreate /dev/xvda1) for my entire drive, which is formatted as LVM. i'm now trying to create a volume group using vgcreate main /dev/xvda1, but it's returning "Command failed with status code 5.". I've been unable to find an explanation for this error code. does anyone know what it means? for what it's worth, my goal is to create multiple logical volumes on my drive using lvm. thanks

• What does the "Max Memory Size" on the new Intel Core i3 / i5 / i7 CPU's mean?

  I just noticed in the specs of the new Intel Core i-series processors that there is a "Max Memory Size" that is usually pretty small -- anywhere from 8GB to 24GB. See here: http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=41316 Core 2-based motherboards were just starting to roll out support for 32GB and greater memory sizes. Anyone have any idea what the Max Memory Size indicates? Is this the total limitation of the on-chip memory controller? Limitation per channel? Limitation per stick (e.g. density??)? Thinking of building a decent machine that needs lots of RAM, so I'm looking at the i7 860.

  Hello I recently installed CSF firewall and have made live a new server which is accepting around 600req/second. Its basically a reverse proxy and I found in pingdom and munin that for a particular time, the response times of the server increased by 3 folds. • Does liquid cooling mean I no longer need to dust my machine?

  I've got two long haired cats, a dog and I live with a smoker. I use my computer pretty much all day everday, and though I put it to sleep in the night, those fans are constantly going during the day. In just 6 months the rear fans have so much hair wrapped around them it looks more like something from a vacuum cleaner rather than electronic equipment! Due to this, I'm interested in liquid cooling. However, it appears that liquid cooled systems have fans and liquid cooling? Are those just hybrid solutions? They wouldn't really help my situation. There does appear to be fanless systems that use a radiator to dissipate heat. If I implemented one of these could I seal up the vents on my PC and never have to dust it again? Is there a disadvantage to fanless liquid cooling? I don't need to overclock at the moment but I ever want to push my components will fanless liquid cooling be pretty rubbish?
