  After getting a new MacBook Air and deciding to try out OS X for a while, I started wondering why the battery would suddenly start dying really fast, but only when I was sitting at the kitchen table. That’s when I noticed the display brightness kept changing on its own… and realized the problem. OS X, just like your phone, and any modern device, tries to figure out the brightness of the room you’re in, and adjust the brightness of the screen. If you are over in Windows, it’s called “Adaptive” brightness, while your phone will just call it “Auto”. While this technology is great in theory, I don’t really need max brightness all the time, and I like to control it manually to make sure I’m getting the best battery life. Open up System Preferences, head to Displays. Then uncheck the Automatically adjust brightness setting.

  session ID: CON8601 - when: Monday, Oct. 1, 10:45am-11:45am - where: Moscone South 102 "Oracle SOA Suite, the Most Capable Tool for Every Possible Integration Challenge" is the name of the session I will be delivering at Oracle OpenWorld this year. I'm usually going for more subdued titles but decided to remove the gloves this year, at the risk of sounding arrogant! While we have a number of worthy competitors in various areas of integration no one can really compete with the breadth and reliability of Oracle SOA Suite. This session is primarily intended for people who are not yet familiar with Oracle SOA Suite (i.e. if you are an existing customer your time might be better spent at some of the other sessions we have on the topic). I will provide an overview of Oracle SOA Suite, the customers using it and the types of challenges they are solving with it: from integrating Oracle Applications (E-Business Suite, Siebel, PeopleSoft, RightNow, Taleo etc.) to third-party applications (did you know that over a third of our customers actually use us to integrate SAP?), mainframes and a variety of technologies. We will talk about some emerging trends and problems that our users are solving with the product: cloud integration, B2B consolidation and mobile-enablement. I will also briefly touch upon the exciting projects we are doing with Oracle Event Processing, in the domain of "Fast Data" and "Big Data". Last but not least, I will be joined on stage by Venktesh Maudgalya, Director at Electronic Arts. Venktesh will bring his customer perspective and explain how EA leveraged Oracle SOA Suite to implement iHub, the massive integration hub that interconnects all their applications (E-BusinessSuite, Hyperion, Demantra, Peoplesoft, Salesforce.com, Kronos, Teradata, GXS etc.) and carries 3/4 of their revenue flows. I just picked up my badge and will be kicking off the festivities tomorrow talking to partners in a pre-OOW briefing at the Oracle Headquarters - see you next week! • Microsoft Discontinuing Windows Home Server

  As part of their ongoing push to simplify their product lineups, Microsoft is discontinuing their popular small office/home server platform Windows Home Server. On to see the new alternative for small volume users. Although, in the context of the simplification push, it shouldn’t seem surprising, many people were in fact surprised by Microsoft’s move to drop the extremely popular and economical WHS platform. Now, instead of dropping $99 on a copy of WHS to build their simple home servers users will find themselves on the first tier of the new Windows Server 2012 pricing ladder: a copy of Essentials for $425.   If you are into retro sci-fi movies, then you will definitely want to have a look at this French classic from 1902. This silent movie is only 10.5 minutes long, but is well worth watching and makes for a fun romp through the early days of sci-fi. From YouTube: A Trip to the Moon (French: Le Voyage dans la lune) is a 1902 French black and white silent science fiction film. It is loosely based on two popular novels of the time: From the Earth to the Moon by Jules Verne and The First Men in the Moon by H. G. Wells. The film was written and directed by Georges Melies, assisted by his brother Gaston. The film runs 14 minutes if projected at 16 frames per second, which was the standard frame rate at the time the film was produced. It was extremely popular at the time of its release and is the best-known of the hundreds of fantasy films made by Melies. A Trip to the Moon is the first science fiction film, and utilizes innovative animation and special effects, including the iconic shot of the rocketship landing in the Moon’s eye. • PC On/Off Time Charts Windows Uptime; No Logging Necessary

  Windows: PC On/Off Time is a graphical tool that displays your PC’s uptime, downtime, errors, and more all in a clear and portable package. One of the hassles of using logging tools is that you usually have to enable the logging and then wait for results to pile up before seeing anything useful (such as when you turn on the logging on your router). • Star Trail Photos Taken from the International Space Station

  While most people have seen a star trail photo or two, seeing a set of star trail photos taken from over 300 miles above the Earth’s surface is a treat. Courtesy of Astronaut and Expedition 31 Flight Engineer Don Pettit, the photos capture star trails from the vantage point of the International Space Station. He explains his technique: My star trail images are made by taking a time exposure of about 10 to 15 minutes. However, with modern digital cameras, 30 seconds is about the longest exposure possible, due to electronic detector noise effectively snowing out the image. To achieve the longer exposures I do what many amateur astronomers do. I take multiple 30-second exposures, then ‘stack’ them using imaging software, thus producing the longer exposure. That is until we changed the free patch policy support academics & research post CIC and he and many left in droves entirely pissed off. Well, we're working on a fix now so that all faculty can set-up a server environment, get free patch support and innovate on our stack from OS to virtualization to toolsets in support research, academic use and teaching. Hopefully, just maybe, we can start to bring Doug and the others back home as a result.

  Just a reminder that you still have the next several weeks to take the beta exam for the new "Oracle Certified Associate, Java SE 7 Programmer" certification. From now through December 16th, you can take the "Java SE 7 Programmer I" exam (1Z1-803) for only $50 USD. Not only that, but because this only a single-exam certification - passing it puts you among the very first certified on the new Java SE 7 platform! You'll be happy to note that we worked hard to raise the bar for OCA as we built the Java SE 7 certification. The content that we considered to be more ‘conceptual knowledge-based' has been eliminated in the OCA level and has been replaced with far more practical content - what we often call "practitioner-level" concepts and questions. In fact, some of the topics that we previously covered at the Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) level is now covered at the OCA level. Doing this not only increases the value of the Java SE 7 OCA certification, but also has provided the opportunity for us to broaden the topics, concepts, questions covered at the OCP certification level. All of this adds up to more value and credibility to those who get certified on Java SE 7. The OCA exam doesn’t have prerequisites.   Scientists have long theorized that Mars once had an atmosphere and surface water–but where did it go? This video showcases one of their theories about Mars’ vanished water reserves. It’s dry, it’s dusty, and there’s practically no atmosphere. But some scientists think that Mars may have once looked like a much nicer place to live, with a thicker atmosphere, cloudy skies, and possibly even liquid water flowing over the surface. So how do you go from something like this–to something like this?
