• Using a "white list" for extracting terms for Text Mining

  In Part 1 of my post on "Generating cluster names from a document clustering model" (part 1, part 2, part 3), I showed how to build a clustering model from text documents using Oracle Data Miner, which automates preparing data for text mining. In this process we specified a custom stoplist and lexer and relied on Oracle Text to identify important terms.  However, there is an alternative approach, the white list, which uses a thesaurus object with the Oracle Text CTXRULE index to allow you to specify the important terms. INTRODUCTIONA stoplist is used to exclude, i.e., black list, specific words in your documents from being indexed. For example, words like a, if, and, or, and but normally add no value when text mining. Other words can also be excluded if they do not help to differentiate documents, e.g., the word Oracle is ubiquitous in the Oracle product literature. One problem with stoplists is determining which words to specify. This usually requires inspecting the terms that are extracted, manually identifying which ones you don't want, and then re-indexing the documents to determine if you missed any. Since a corpus of documents could contain thousands of words, this could be a tedious exercise. Moreover, since every word is considered as an individual token, a term excluded in one context may be needed to help identify a term in another context. For example, in our Oracle product literature example, the words "Oracle Data Mining" taken individually are not particular helpful. The term "Oracle" may be found in nearly all documents, as with the term "Data." The term "Mining" is more unique, but could also refer to the Mining industry. If we exclude "Oracle" and "Data" by specifying them in the stoplist, we lose valuable information. But it we include them, they may introduce too much noise. Still, when you have a broad vocabulary or don't have a list of specific terms of interest, you rely on the text engine to identify important terms, often by computing the term frequency - inverse document frequency metric. (This is effectively a weight associated with each term indicating its relative importance in a document within a collection of documents. We'll revisit this later.) The results using this technique is often quite valuable. As noted above, an alternative to the subtractive nature of the stoplist is to specify a white list, or a list of terms--perhaps multi-word--that we want to extract and use for data mining. The obvious downside to this approach is the need to specify the set of terms of interest. However, this may not be as daunting a task as it seems. For example, in a given domain (Oracle product literature), there is often a recognized glossary, or a list of keywords and phrases (Oracle product names, industry names, product categories, etc.). Being able to identify multi-word terms, e.g., "Oracle Data Mining" or "Customer Relationship Management" as a single token can greatly increase the quality of the data mining results. The remainder of this post and subsequent posts will focus on how to produce a dataset that contains white list terms, suitable for mining. CREATING A WHITE LIST We'll leverage the thesaurus capability of Oracle Text. Using a thesaurus, we create a set of rules that are in effect our mapping from single and multi-word terms to the tokens used to represent those terms. For example, "Oracle Data Mining" becomes "ORACLEDATAMINING." First, we'll create and populate a mapping table called my_term_token_map. All text has been converted to upper case and values in the TERM column are intended to be mapped to the token in the TOKEN column. A cursor is defined over my_term_token_map. As we iterate over  the rows, we insert a synonym relationship 'SYN' into the thesaurus. We also insert into the table my_thesaurus_rules the main term, and the corresponding query string, which specifies synonyms for the token in the thesaurus. We'll then compute the tf-idf weights for each of the terms and create a nested table suitable for mining.

• SQL SERVER – Online Index Rebuilding Index Improvement in SQL Server 2012

  Have you ever faced situation when you see something working and you feel it should not be working? Well, I had similar moments few days ago. I know that SQL Server 2008 supports online indexing. However, I also know that I cannot rebuild index ONLINE if I have used VARCHAR(MAX), NVARCHAR(MAX) or few other data types. While I held my belief very strongly I came across situation, where I had to go online and do little bit reading from Book Online. Here is the similar example. First of all – run following code in SQL Server 2008 or SQL Server 2008 R2. USE TempDB GO CREATE TABLE TestTable (ID INT, FirstCol NVARCHAR(10), SecondCol NVARCHAR(MAX)) GO CREATE CLUSTERED INDEX [IX_TestTable] ON TestTable (ID) GO CREATE NONCLUSTERED INDEX [IX_TestTable_Cols] ON TestTable (FirstCol) INCLUDE (SecondCol) GO USE [tempdb] GO ALTER INDEX [IX_TestTable_Cols] ON [dbo].[TestTable] REBUILD WITH (ONLINE = ON) GO DROP TABLE TestTable GO Now run the same code in SQL Server 2012 version. Observe the difference between both of the execution. You will be get following resultset. In SQL Server 2008/R2 it will throw following error: Msg 2725, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 An online operation cannot be performed for index ‘IX_TestTable_Cols’ because the index contains column ‘SecondCol’ of data type text, ntext, image, varchar(max), nvarchar(max), varbinary(max), xml, or large CLR type. For a non-clustered index, the column could be an include column of the index. For a clustered index, the column could be any column of the table. If DROP_EXISTING is used, the column could be part of a new or old index. The operation must be performed offline. In SQL Server 2012 it will run successfully and will not throw any error. Command(s) completed successfully. I always thought it will throw an error if there is VARCHAR(MAX) or NVARCHAR(MAX) used in table schema definition. When I saw this result it was clear to me that it will be for sure not bug enhancement in SQL Server 2012. For matter for the fact, I always wanted this feature to be added in SQL Server Engine as this will enable ONLINE Index Rebuilding for mission critical tables which needs to be always online. • Changing the default installation path to a newly installed hard disk

  Hi, I am currently working on a dual-booted PC. I am using Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx released in April 2010. The allocated partition to Ubuntu that I am making use of has almost exhausted. Generally softwares are installed via the terminal and by default a fixed path is used to where the post installation set up files can be found (I am talking in context of the drive). This is like the typical case of Windows, where softwares by default are installed in the C: drive. These days people customize their installations to a drive which they find apt to serve their purpose (generally based on availability of hard disk space). I am trying to figure out how to customize the same for Ubuntu. As we all know the most softwares are installed via commands given from the Terminal. My road block is how do I redirect the default path set on the terminal where files get installed to this new hard disk. This if done will help me overcome space constraints I am currently facing wrt the partition on which my Ubuntu is initially installed. I would also by this, save time on not formatting my system and reinstalling Ubuntu and other softwares all over again. Please help me with this, your suggestions are much appreciated.

Now i want to install Ubuntu 12.04 Lts or 13.10 lts..... i have try many time to install in my laptop via live CD or USB installer....and i have try many live CD and many pen drive to install Ubuntu ... but it is not done......now i am in very big problem...... when i put my CD or USB drive to boot and install the Ubuntu......my laptop screen is goes the some black (brightness of my laptop screen is very low and there is very low visibility ) and not showing any thing on my laptop screen..... and when i move the my laptop screen.....then there is graphics option in this screen to installation of the Ubuntu option......and when i press the dual boot with setting button and press to continue them my laptop is goes for shutdown after 2 or 5 minutes..... ...... and Hp service center person is saying to me our laptop hardware has no problem.....please contact to Ubuntu tech support............. show please help me if possible..... • Advice needed: warm backup solution for SQL Server 2008 Express?

  What are my options for achieving a warm backup server for a SQL Server Express instance running a single database? Sitting beside my production SQL Server 2008 Express box I have a second physical box currently doing nothing. I want to use this second box as a warm backup server by somehow replicating my production database in near real time (a little bit of data loss is acceptable). The database is very small and resources are utilized very lightly. In the case that the production server dies, I would manually reconfigure my application to point to the backup server instead. Although Express doesn't support log shipping natively, I am thinking that I could manually script a poor man's version of it, where I use batch files to take the logs and copy them across the network and apply them to the second server at 5 minute intervals. Does anyone have any advice on whether this is technically achievable, or if there is a better way to do what I am trying to do? Note that I want to avoid having to pay for the full version of SQL Server and configure mirroring as I think it is an overkill for this application. I understand that other DB platforms may present suitable options (eg. a MySQL Cluster), but for the purposes of this discussion, let's assume we have to stick to SQL Server.

• Installation issue after 4 attempts

  Have successfully installed Ubuntu 12.10 on 2 laptops, one running Vista & one running Windows8. Made 4 attempts (long downloads of WUBI.EXE) to different HD's & still NO GO. The machine is an older machine with Windows2000Professional installed & running. The system has 3 hard drives; C:(20.5 Gb with 7.26Gb Free), D: (74.5 Gb with 33.1 Gb Free), & E: (35.3 Gb with 24.8 Gb Free) which all have Gigabytes space available; also an A: 3 1/2floppy drive and a CD-drive burner. The CPU processor is older but seems sufficient: AMD Athlon XP 1700+ and the task manager of Windows2000 shows the processor works fine.. The flat-screen display works fine. Here is the error message I receive each time the 'installation configuration' is verified: "No root file system is defined" "Please correct this from partitioning menu" << The Ubuntu operating system is allowing me a couple of options at the very top right menu. I was able to establish a wireless connection but the MAIN homepage won't load with FIREFOX app or any other apps. I cannot access or even find any 'Partitioning Menu" from the displayed page. I cannot access files or Windows Explorer to view drives since I'm not using the Windows O/S. If I try to go back & re-install the UBUNTU 12.10 again, it always asks me to UNINSTALL the one found on the HD & then I run WUBI.EXE again which takes a long time for the download. Do I need to go back into Windows2000 & use Windows Explorer to look at the file structure & add a partition? On previous attempts I have tried loading the WUBI.EXE on all 3 HD's C: D: & E: Sure is frustrating?? Thanks for any suggestions. NEW UBUNTU user & what I've seen so far I like.. (J.R.)

• Java EE and GlassFish Server Roadmap Update

  2013 has been a stellar year for both the Java EE and GlassFish Server communities. On June 12, Oracle and its partners announced the release of Java EE 7, which delivers on three major themes – HTML5, developer productivity, and meeting enterprise demands. The online event attracted over 10,000 views in the first two days! During the online event, Oracle also announced the availability of GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 4, the world's first Java EE 7 compatible application server. The primary role of GlassFish Server Open Source Edition has been, and continues to be, driving adoption of the latest release of the Java Platform, Enterprise Edition. Oracle also announced the Java EE 7 SDK, which bundles GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 4, as a Java EE 7 learning aid. Last, Oracle publicly announced the Java EE 7 reference implementation based on GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 4. Java EE is a popular platform, as evidenced by the 20+ Java EE 6 compatible implementations available to choose from. After the launch of Java EE 7 and GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 4, we began planning the Java EE 8 roadmap, which was covered during the JavaOne Strategy Keynote. To summarize, there is a lot of interest in improving on HTML5 support, Cloud, and investigating NoSQL support. We received a lot of great feedback from the community and customers on what they would like to see in Java EE 8. As we approached JavaOne 2013, we started planning the GlassFish Server roadmap. What we announced at JavaOne was that GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 4.1 is scheduled for 2014. Here is an update to that roadmap. GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 4.1 is scheduled for 2014 We are planning updates as needed to GlassFish Server Open Source Edition, which is commercially unsupported As we head towards Java EE 8: The trunk will eventually transition to GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 5 as a Java EE 8 implementation The Java EE 8 Reference Implementation will be derived from GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 5. This replicates what has been done in past Java EE and GlassFish Server releases. Oracle will no longer release future major releases of Oracle GlassFish Server with commercial support – specifically Oracle GlassFish Server 4.x with commercial Java EE 7 support will not be released. Commercial Java EE 7 support will be provided from WebLogic Server. Oracle GlassFish Server will not be releasing a 4.x commercial version Expanding on that last bullet, new and existing Oracle GlassFish Server 2.1.x and 3.1.x commercial customers will continue to be supported according to the Oracle Lifetime Support Policy. Oracle recommends that existing commercial Oracle GlassFish Server customers begin planning to move to Oracle WebLogic Server, which is a natural technical and license migration path forward: Applications developed to Java EE standards can be deployed to both GlassFish Server and Oracle WebLogic Server GlassFish Server and Oracle WebLogic Server have implementation-specific deployment descriptor interoperability (here and here). GlassFish Server 3.x and Oracle WebLogic Server share quite a bit of code, so there are quite a bit of configuration and (extended) feature similarities. Shared code includes JPA, JAX-RS, WebSockets (pre JSR 356 in both cases), CDI, Bean Validation, JAX-WS, JAXB, and WS-AT. Both Oracle GlassFish Server 3.x and Oracle WebLogic Server 12c support Oracle Access Manager, Oracle Coherence, Oracle Directory Server, Oracle Virtual Directory, Oracle Database, Oracle Enterprise Manager and are entitled to support for the underlying Oracle JDK. To summarize, Oracle is committed to the future of Java EE.  Java EE 7 has been released and planning for Java EE 8 has begun. GlassFish Server Open Source Edition continues to be the strategic foundation for Java EE reference implementation going forward. And for developers, updates will be delivered as needed to continue to deliver a great developer experience for GlassFish Server Open Source Edition. We are planning for GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 5 as the foundation for the Java EE 8 reference implementation, as well as bundling GlassFish Server Open Source Edition 5 in a Java EE 8 SDK, which is the most popular distribution of GlassFish. This will allow GlassFish releases to be more focused on the Java EE platform and community-driven requirements. We continue to encourage community contributions, bug reports, participation on the GlassFish forum, etc. Going forward, Oracle WebLogic Server will be the single strategic commercially supported application server from Oracle. • Ubuntu Install 11.10 doesn't recognize Windows 7 installation with new HDD

  Replaced my crashed HDD with a Seagate 2TB Sata (bought from a company who pulled it from a working computer, OS unknown) and did a fresh install of Windows 7. Windows shows 100MB boot partition (bootable NTFS) and 200GB Windows partition (NTFS), the rest is unallocated. Win7 Disk Management says the partitioning type is Master Boot Record. Win7 boots and runs fine. Ubuntu 11.10 Install procedes to Allocate Drive Space screen and should say This computer currently has Windows 7 on it. What would you like to do? Instead, it says something like Install doesn't detect any existing OS on this computer. When I click on Something else, the partition table shows only the unallocated space of 1.8TB. Ubuntu Disk Utility says Partitioning: Master Boot Record, but GParted Live says Partition Table: gpt. It was my original intention to have the Windows boot partition and application partition, then install Ubuntu 11.10 using boot, root, swap, and home partitions, and maybe another partition just for data (mostly photos). Currently, I would be happy if I could just get Ubuntu installed along with Win7. I am aware of the MBR limits of 3 Primary partitions and 1 Extended partition. I suspect that my new HDD is partitioned for GPT and that is why Ubuntu can't see the Win7 installation. Am I on the right track? I was going to use Windows Disk Management to convert GPT to MBR but I only have the one drive on my AMD-64 mini-computer and it says I have to empty the drive of all partitions before I can access the Convert command. And I can't find any bootable software that would allow me to do that conversion. Here is the result of sudo fdisk -l: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo fdisk -l WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sda'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted. I previously had Ubuntu 10.04 running with Vista and I don't remember even having to partition anything that wasn't automatic in the install. Thanks for taking a look here. My Win7 is running fine but I miss my Ubuntu.

• Failed 12.04 installation

  I tried installing Ubuntu 12.04 today. Not an upgrade, a new installation. It didn't work. My computer specs: Computer: Compaq presario CQ-104CA OS: Windows 7 Home 64 bit CPU: AMD V140 BIOS: latest Graphics: amd m880g with ati mobility radeon hd 4250 Wireless: atheros ar9285 Internal HD:SATA I wasn't connected to the internet at the time ... I know of a number of people who have installed ubuntu unconnected and just updated later. It seemed to go normally until I got to the part where I chose to install dual boot linux/windows. Then, the screen went black and the following test appeared (I left out the [OK]'s): checking battery state starting crash report submission daemon stating cpu interrupts balancing daemon stopping system V runlevel compatibility starting configure network device security stopping configure network device security stopping cold plug devices stopping log initial device creation starting enable remaining boot-time encrypting devices starting configure network device security starting save udev log and update rules stopping save udev log and update rules stopping enable remaining boot-time encrypted block devices checking for running unattended-upgrades acpid: exiting speech-dispatcher disabled: edit /etc/default/speech-disorder At this point, the CD is ejected. Then nothing. If I press the return key, it boots Windows. I don't think that's what's supposed to happen. Thinking the cd media or dvd drive may have been faulty, I downloaded the .iso again and made a bootable USB stick, as per your instructions. This time there was no cryptic crash screen. It just booted windows. I can't find any log files it may have left. Thinking the amd64 version may have been the wrong one, I tried downloading the x86 version. Same thing, both from cd and usb drive. Note I downloaded both files twice. I doubt it was a corrupted d/l. This is supposed to be a simple, transparent install. I went to the time and trouble of looking up my devices and drivers re ubuntu beforehand, and was prepared to do some configuration, though I know someone who has the same wireless device and his worked righted out of the box. But I spent over 3 hours trying to install it with only the above to show for it.

• Simple SQL Server 2005 Replication - "D-1" server used for heavy queries/reports

  Hello. We have two SQL 2005 machines. One is used for production data, and the other is used for running queries/reports. Every night, the production machine dumps (backups) it's database to disk, and the other one restores it. This is called the D-1 process. I think there must be a more efficient way of doing this, since SQL 2005 has many forms of replication. Some requirements: 1) No need for instant replication, there can be (some) delay 2) All changes (including schemas, data, constraints, indexes) need to be replicated without manual intervention 3) It is used for a single database only 4) There is a third server available if needed 5) There is high bandwidth (gigabit ethernet) available between the servers 6) There isn't a shared storage (SAN) available What would be a good alternative to this daily backup/restore routine?
