• Graphical Error During Installation of Ubuntu 13.10 32bit

  In trying to install the latest version of Ubuntu, I made a bootable USB and proceeded to give it a shot. As it loaded, the upper half of the screen displayed staticy, multi-colored horizontal lines, but continued to boot into the installer. The installer appeared to be functional using the keyboard, but I was unable to proceed as the graphical display was a mismatched mosaic of the proper screen with no visible cursor. I'll try to edit in a photo later. Attempting the exact same USB on a different device (an old Asus Eee 1005HA) gave no such error and installed without a hitch.

• Boot failure on installation from a burned iso image

  I'm encountering boot failure while trying to install a Linux distro from a CD. I'm using an older PC; here are its specs: HP Pavilion a255c 2.66GHz CPU, 512MB RAM with a BIOS revision of 6/30/2003 I reclaimed an older drive (Seagate ST340810A) that seems to be working, as it's recognized in the BIOS (auto-detected). So this is not the original HDD, but a replacement. I downloaded a mini.iso of Ubuntu 10.10 that I want to install, and burned the image to a CD for install. My boot sequence is: First Boot Device [CDROM]. I disabled devices 2-4 so I can just force it to read first from the CD-ROM. This old PC also has a separate CD writer which is a Sec.Slave. The Sec.Master is the Toshiba DVD/ROM DSM-171 drive where I placed the burned Linux CD. With these settings I cannot get it to boot. I get the message "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" when I start the pc with the cd (burned iso image). Would I be able to boot off a usb flash drive? Would that work?

• SSIS Catalog, Windows updates and deployment failures due to System.Core mismatch

  This is a heads-up for anyone doing development on SSIS. On my current project where we are implementing a SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) 2012 solution we recently encountered a situation where we were unable to deploy any of our projects even though we had successfully deployed in the past. Any attempt to use the deployment wizard resulted in this error dialog: The text of the error (for all you search engine crawlers out there) was: A .NET Framework error occurred during execution of user-defined routine or aggregate "create_key_information": System.IO.FileLoadException: Could not load file or assembly 'System.Core, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) ---> System.IO.FileLoadException: The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) System.IO.FileLoadException: System.IO.FileLoadException:     at Microsoft.SqlServer.IntegrationServices.Server.Security.CryptoGraphy.CreateSymmetricKey(String algorithm)    at Microsoft.SqlServer.IntegrationServices.Server.Security.CryptoGraphy.CreateKeyInformation(SqlString algorithmName, SqlBytes& key, SqlBytes& IV) . (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 6522) After some investigation and a bit of back and forth with some very helpful members of the SSIS product team (hey Matt, Wee Hyong) it transpired that this was due to a .Net Framework fix that had been delivered via Windows Update. I took a look at the server update history and indeed there have been some recently applied .Net Framework updates: This fix had (in the words of Matt Masson) “somehow caused a mismatch on System.Core for SQLCLR” and, as you may know, SQLCLR is used heavily within the SSIS Catalog. The fix was pretty simple – restart SQL Server. This causes the assemblies to be upgraded automatically. If you are using Data Quality Services (DQS) you may have experienced similar problems which are documented at Upgrade SQLCLR Assemblies After .NET Framework Update. I am hoping the SSIS team will follow-up with a more thorough explanation on their blog soon. You DBAs out there may be questioning why Windows Update is set to automatically apply updates on our production servers.   I'm newbie with ubuntu, I tried to install ubuntu, at the beginning xubuntu work for the first upgrade to xubuntu 12.04, but after the reboot, no winxp media center ether Xubuntu won't start and I have a screen Ctrl+Alt+Del nothing else. I read a little about, maybe the sata enabled on the bios. What is the problem and can it be fixed or do I have to remove xubuntu. Partition is : 100gb xubuntu 220gb winxp I have an external drive 1 tb Thanks for the help.

• SQL SERVER – SSMS 2012 Reset Keyboard Shortcuts to Default

  As a technologist, I love my laptop very much and I do not lend it to anyone as I am usually worried that my settings would be messed up when I get it back from its borrower. Honestly, I love how I have set up my laptop and I enjoy the settings and programs I have placed on my computer. If someone changes things there – it will surely be annoying for me. Recently at one of the conferences I was attending in, a small accident happened – one of the speaker’s hard drives failed. The owner immediately panicked due to this and had no clue what to do. I suggested that he may not be able to show the demos but can still show a few things with the product. He accepted my suggestion and finished the presentation. Good thing everybody looked satisfied. Little did I know that a small accident was waiting for me later that day. When I opened my SQL Server Denali, all my shortcuts were totally out of order. When I hit F5, instead of executing query, it was opening up some debugging screen for me. I was very much annoyed so I decided to surf the Internet for me to know how I could reset it to SQL Server 2012 default shortcut. There were so many different advices which further confused me. After reading 4-5 different methods, I used the following method to reset my SQL Server 2012 keyboard shortcuts: Go to SSMS > Tools >> Import and Export Settings… As I wanted to reset all the settings I selected the “Reset all settings” option, but you can select other options as per your need. I suggest you save your current Settings; however, in my case, I did not like the current option so I just decided to overwrite my settings. Here I have two options –  I can either set my shortcut to SQL Server 2012 settings or Visual Studio 2010. I went ahead with the SQL Server 2012 option. Success! • SQL SERVER – DVM sys.dm_os_sys_info Column Name Changed in SQL Server 2012

  Have you ever faced situation where something does not work and when you try to go and fix it – you like fixing it and started to appreciate the breaking changes. Well, this is exactly I felt yesterday. Before I begin my story of yesterday I want to state it candidly that I do not encourage anybody to use * in the SELECT statement. One of the my DBA friend who always used my performance tuning script yesterday sent me email asking following question - “Every time I want to retrieve OS related information in SQL Server – I used DMV sys.dm_os_sys_info. I just upgraded my SQL Server edition from 2008 R2 to SQL Server 2012 RC0 and it suddenly stopped working. Well, this is not the production server so the issue is not big yet but eventually I need to resolve this error. Any suggestion?” The funny thing was original email was very long but it did not talk about what is the exact error beside the query is not working. I think this is the disadvantage of being too friendly on email sometime. Well, never the less, I quickly looked at the DMV on my SQL Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2012 RC0 version. To my surprise I found out that there were few columns which are renamed in SQL Server 2012 RC0. Usually when people see breaking changes they do not like it but when I see these changes I was happy as new names were meaningful and additionally their new conversion is much more practical and useful. Here are the columns previous names - Previous Column Name New Column Name physical_memory_in_bytes physical_memory_kb bpool_commit_target committed_target_kb bpool_visible visible_target_kb virtual_memory_in_bytes virtual_memory_kb bpool_commited committed_kb If you read it carefully you will notice that new columns now display few results in the KB whereas earlier result was in bytes. When I see the results in bytes I always get confused as I could not guess what exactly it will convert to. I like to see results in kb and I am glad that new columns are now displaying the results in the kb. I sent the details of the new columns to my friend and ask him to check the columns used in application. From my comment he quickly realized why he was facing error and fixed it immediately. Overall – all was well at the end and I learned something new. • Making an Ubuntu installation disc UEFI bootable

  I'm trying to install Ubuntu 12.04 on a machine with UEFI (Windows 8). Following Rod Books, I managed to get my system to boot using rEFInd. However rEFInd does not offer me any options to boot from my Ubuntu installer disc. Another thing...after following Rod Books' instructions, my machine greeted me with something along the lines of "The bootloader is not trusted" (my usage of the term "bootloader" is possibly wrong; I'm not well-acquainted with these terms) I got to work around this by setting up some passwords in the BIOS and putting the renamed .efi of rEFInd to the trusted list. While in this screen, it showed me the drives with a possible .efi (among them, the drive S in Rod Books' guide) and one of the drives it showed was my optical drive with an Ubuntu installer. I tried browsing for an .efi in the Ubuntu installer but found none. True enough, at Windows, I searched the drive for an .efi but found none. So how do I make my Ubuntu installer UEFI bootable?

Yes my laptop CD-ROM is not working, and I ASSUME that has something to do with this install not working. I don't want to have to fix my CD-ROM drive to get this to install, and my BIOS does not support disabling it... Any idea's?

• Ubuntu Installation-Allocate drive space/Boot Loader

  When I try to install ubuntu 10.10 from the official livedisc I got in the mail, when I get to the "Allocate Disk Space" step I cannot get it to work. I shrank my win7 partition so I have unallocated space, then I tried using the space while it is formatted in NTFS, but the partitions will not show up in the box. /dev/sda is selected under boot loader, and I can't select anything else, but the partition box is blank so when I click "install ubuntu" it just says: "No root file system is defined. Please correct this from the partitioning menu." -I am trying to dual-boot win7 and ubuntu, but I was never asked in the install process whether I would like to install just ubuntu or dual-boot?

• Black screen in installation when Nvidia graphic card plugged

  When I try to install any recent version of Ubuntu, the screen shows some green and purple mess (like analog TVs when thers no signal). Then, a black screen. I guess it keeps booting in live/install mode. But I can't see it. I tried installing from CD and USB, I tryed changing some BIOS settings... I installed older versions, like 8.04, and it worked, but after updating the system, it crashes again. That's why I discovered that upgrading Nvidia drivers, made system show a black screen again. After that, I unplugged the Nvidia card and installed 12.04 with onboard card. It worked perfectly. Then, I plugged Nvidia again and system booted, but only showing that black screen again. I keep working with onboard card, so far... The nVidia is a GeForce 8500GT.

• Synaptic: Requires installation of untrusted packages

  I am completely new to the forums and almost completely new to Linux. I am running Chrubuntu on an Acer C7 and I've been having trouble installing anything in the Ubuntu Software Center. Based on some advice in another thread I tried to install Synaptic, which seems like it does the same thing except it actually works, but I get the same error message with that as I have with every other program I've tried installing. This is all I get under the details: libept1.4.12 librarian0 rarian-compat synaptic Any help with some simple step by step instructions on how to fix this, and will Synaptic basically be able to replace the Software Center?
