• Will learning ColdFusion help me advance my programming skills? [closed]

  Currently I am working with a small web development company. We use jQuery on front-end, Coldfusion for back-end and MySQL as our database. We just started to use HTML5 and CSS3. This is my first internship and job. I know the basics of Python and want to add Django or Ruby on Rails on my skills set. In addition, I want to advance my programming skills with Machine Learning, Compilers, NoSQL and Unix Hacking. I also find front end web development pretty interesting. Should I focus on front-end and become skilled on HTML5/CSS3/Javascript? Or dive into back-end learning ColdFusion. I will probably leave the company after a year since I want to work with great product start-ups. And I live in India, where ColdFusion is not popular. Will learning ColdFusion help me become better programmer?

  I'm a beginner learning some assembly, when preserving the ESP register before a function call does it matter if you do it by adding or subtracting? hard to explain, consider the following mov esi, esp sub esp, 12 // on 32bit OS this would mean that there are 3 arguments to the function // push, function call etc cmp esi, esp // should be the same or mov esi, esp // push, function call etc add esp, 12 cmp esi, esp // should be the same Also if for some reason the cmp fails, is it safe to do mov esp, esi to re-align the stack? Thanks EDIT: Also how come i need to do this for a call like sprintf, but MessageBox seems to fix ESP for me? How am i to know what function needs this and what doesn't?

  Well here goes a sligtly arwkward question, I have changed job roles from Network Admin to SQL Server DBA thus having to learn SQL server 2005. I am quite self motivated and have learned the basics of Transac and a little about Reporting services. The only thing is I need to set senarios as theres not much coming in at work in the way of SQL tasks. I have always kept my interest in networking by setting little "Hacking tasks", I have has a look at some crackme's but can find nothing to play with. I understand the SQL injection is some sort of SQL hack but found not much on the subject. I know my way of learning might be a bit different from others but it is all White Hat and keeps my interest. Thanks

So i was wondering how you guys tackle the need of plugin executing without any user specific input. So I have a need for plug-in that executes right away after document is ready, without any user's specific input just as long as doc is loaded, so the only way I see how to execute plug-in on it's own is to attach handler to ready listener that executes my function which I extended the jQuery with. And because this needs to be self enclosed, part of the code, I attach handler to event listener within the function. So how else could one tackle this? Any take at this is appreciated.   OK for the past 10 days I have been trying to figure out where to begin learning website development a dynamic one, So far everyone told me you should start with computer science and I am like What the @#$% how am I suppose to learn computer science without going to school and get a degree but I don't want a degree I just want to learn how to devlope websites. So now I am here and confused about how to put together a website. I get HTML and CSS but still have some problems designing the site now on the other had I am having trouble trying to figure out how php and database mysql is used to put together a website. I have seen videos from lynda.com and still have no Idea after I have watched the video the basic one, one that teach you the Variables, Loops, Strings ext... ok than what happens, how do you build the website with it, that is the question I am real not understand the answer to. Any help will be appreciated.

  What is so unique about Go? Over the 11 years of my career I've learnt Pascal, C, C++, COBOL and then Java. I always felt that going from C to C++ to Java was a incremental and value added progression. Now I see a proliferation of functional programming languages and I understand the benefit of learning few of them (like actors in scala etc). Now I was going through the Go programming language and was wondering why would I want to learn this? Is this going to simplify how I have been writing the code? What are its use cases? How can I make a case to promote it in my team? What is the next programming language that a Java team that builds business applications like us can benefit from? Appreciate your comments on this.

  I am a basic SVN user now trying to learn GIT for a new position. I am trying the usual reading docs and watching videos. However after doing all that I still feel that there is a lot that I do not know. I was wondering if there is a place like project Euler for programming languages, that provides a series of exercises that you can do just to increase your confidence and test your knowledge about a version control system. Something thats generic enough and gets you up to speed with how to do basic things. This could also serve as a comparison point of sorts between multiple VCSs, that would show what things are easy in which VCS. If there is nothing I was planning to document my journey in learning GIT and the create an exercise of this sort.

• Book recommendation for a Ruby dev learning Java

  I've been a Ruby developer for the past 4-5 years, and prior to that coded in Perl and a language called ProvideX for years. As hard as it may seem, I've never written a Java application short of the basic Hello World app probably a decade ago. I'm beginning to start doing some Android development to port some iPhone applications we did for a client over to the Android platform. As such, I'm wondering what the best reference book I can buy is to get up to speed quickly with the features (and peculiarities) of Java. There are numerous "Learn Ruby for Java programmers" out there, but not really any reference books for going the otherway of Ruby-to-Java. I'm looking for something preferably like the "Learn Perl the Hard Way" book. I know how to code, I just need a reference on learning the proper mechanics of Java after having done Ruby (and a bit of Obj-C) work exclusively for the past few years.

  Do you know any book, blog, tutorial which explains in a detailed way the use of some open source projects? Maybe you have written such a tutorial, example of open source libraries, and your final product is great for a beginner to understand it. I'm in the learning stage of OOP and I really need to learn by examples. I'll like to find some text which explains the use of some open source software/libraries and the good practices. Beign honestly I feel scared to use the open source libraries as I wish/think at this moment. I feel like as I still write procedural code and not OOP. • Choosing the right and learning assembler for compiler-writing

  I'm writing a compiler and I have gone through all the steps (tokenizing, parsing, syntax tree structures, etc.) that they show you in all the compiler books. (Please don't comment with the link to the "Resources for writing a compiler" question!). I have chosen to use NASM together with alink as my backend. Now my problem is: I just can't find any good resources for learning NASM and assembly in general. The wikibook (german) on x86 assembly is horrible. They don't even explain the code they write there, I currently can't even get simple things like adding 1 to 2 and outputting the result working. Where can I learn NASM x86 assembly?

Up until now, it's been possible to get by with any reasonable level of modularization and object oriented design. However, now that I'm writing more complex code for my assignments I'd like to learn to write better code. Can anyone point me in the direction of some resources for learning about what sort of things to look for when designing your program's architecture so that you can make it as modularized as possible?   I know Ruby right now, however I want to learn a new language. I am running Ubuntu 10.04 right now but I am going to get a Mac later this summer. Anyways I want something more for GUI development. I was wondering if I should learn C on Ubuntu right now, and then learn Objective-C when I get an iMac? Will learning C give me an edge? Or should I just learn Python on Ubuntu and then learn Objective-C when I get a new computer? Please give me your opinions! Thanks!

• Many to many self join through junction table

  I have an EF model that can self-reference through an intermediary class to define a parent/child relationship. I know how to do a pure many-to-many relationship using the Map command, but for some reason going through this intermediary class is causing problems with my mappings. The intermediary class provides additional properties for the relationship. See the classes, modelBinder logic and error below: public class Equipment { [Key] public int EquipmentId { get; set; } public virtual List<ChildRecord> Parents { get; set; } public virtual List<ChildRecord> Children { get; set; } } public class ChildRecord { [Key] public int ChildId { get; set; } [Required] public int Quantity { get; set; } [Required] public Equipment Parent { get; set; } [Required] public Equipment Child { get; set; } } I've tried building the mappings in both directions, though I only keep one set in at a time: modelBuilder.Entity<ChildRecord>() .HasRequired(x => x.Parent) .WithMany(x => x.Children ) .WillCascadeOnDelete(false); modelBuilder.Entity<ChildRecord>() .HasRequired(x => x.Child) .WithMany(x => x.Parents) .WillCascadeOnDelete(false); OR modelBuilder.Entity<Equipment>() .HasMany(x => x.Parents) .WithRequired(x => x.Child) .WillCascadeOnDelete(false); modelBuilder.Entity<Equipment>() .HasMany(x => x.Children) .WithRequired(x => x.Parent) .WillCascadeOnDelete(false); Regardless of which set I use, I get the error: The foreign key component 'Child' is not a declared property on type 'ChildRecord'. Verify that it has not been explicitly excluded from the model and that it is a valid primitive property. when I try do deploy my ef model to the database. If I build it without the modelBinder logic in place then I get two ID columns for Child and two ID columns for Parent in my ChildRecord table. This makes sense since it tries to auto create the navigation properties from Equipment and doesn't know that there are already properties in ChildRecord to fulfill this need. I tried using Data Annotations on the class, and no modelBuilder code, this failed with the same error as above: [Required] [ForeignKey("EquipmentId")] public Equipment Parent { get; set; } [Required] [ForeignKey("EquipmentId")] public Equipment Child { get; set; } AND [InverseProperty("Child")] public virtual List<ChildRecord> Parents { get; set; } [InverseProperty("Parent")] public virtual List<ChildRecord> Children { get; set; } I've looked at various other answers around the internet/SO, and the common difference seems to be that I am self joining where as all the answers I can find are for two different types. • Internal Code Signing: Key Distribution, or Certificate Server?

  I should first note that we have nobody in IT with significant familiarity with self-signed certification. We have a moderately sprawling network (one forest, many locations), and we are now rolling out internal code signing; until now users have run untrusted code, or we even disabled(!) the warnings. Intranet applications, scripts, and sites will now be signed with self certification. I am aware of two obvious ways we can deploy this: Distributing the keys directly via a group policy, and setting up a cert server. Can someone explain the trade-offs between these two methods? How many certs before the group policy method is unwieldy? Are they large enough that remote users will have issues? Does the group policy method distribute duplicates on every login? Is there a better method I am not aware of? I can find a lot of documentation on certifications and various ways to create them, but I have not been able to find something that summarizes the difference between the distribution methods and what criteria make one or the other superior.
