I have found it difficult to find a clear definition of Fault vs. Service Request vs. Technical incidents. • PostgreSQL won't start anymore

  Today, my PostgreSQL doesn't start anymore on my windows machine... I've tried to start the service in windows services and got the following error: Windows could not start the PostgreSQL Database Server 8.3 service on Local Computer. Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. Then I went to the command line to manually start C:/Program Files (x86)/PostgreSQL/8.3/bin/psql.exe, and then I got this error: psql: Could not connect to server: Connection refused (0x0000274D/10061) Is the server running on host "???" and accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5432? • apache generating to many rotatelogs.exe on Windows?

  I'm seeing some odd behavior with Apache's rotatelogs.exe. On one of my servers I'm seeing multiple rotatelogs.exe counting into the 100's. Normally I usually only see 6 which I can rationalize to the 3 logs I have rotating. Does anyone know why this might be happening and how I can prevent it from happening. When the rotatelogs.exe processes get up into the 100's everything slows down and Apache is effectively shutdown because it can't process requests anymore. We are using the following line in our httpd.conf file: ErrorLog "|\"C:/Program Files/Apache2/bin/rotatelogs.exe\" \"C:/Program Files/Apache2/logs/error_log.%Y-%m-%d-%H_%M_%S\" 20M" Thanks in advance for the help!

• MacBook: Can't boot into Linux partition after installation.

  Hello I just installed Ubuntu. I created a partition in MacOSx using Disk utility, then deleted the partition and installed Ubuntu on the free space created. After the installation, Ubuntu said it would reboot. I hang on shutdown (which is normal, as google told me), so I used the power button to turn the MacBook off. Now I want to boot into Ubuntu. Pressing option/alt on startup only shows me the MacOSx and Windows partition. Also, the Linux partition isn't showing up on my MacOSx desktop. And in Disk Utility, I can see 3 grayed out partitions: "disk0s4", "disk0s5" and "Linux Swap". What can I do to boot into Ubuntu without losing my other partitions? Thank you for your help.

• RAID Read/Write Speed Gradually Slows

  This is actually a server at home, but I felt it was sufficiently complicated as to not have it on SuperUser and could easily apply to a professional situation. I have a file server running Debian (Lenny 5.0.4), and it has an XFS LVM on top of a RAID 5 with the OS drive separate from the RAID. It's also running apache, samba, and postgresql. Side note: before anyone asks, I'm using RAID5 because I get more bang for the buck on raw drive space, and still have some fault tolerance. When the box is started (via shutdown or reboot) reading/writing to it's samba share maxes out the gigabit network connection. Over time, this slowly degrades eventually becoming < 10MB/s; however, when rebooted the speed returns to maxing out the connection. Why is this happening, and is there a way to 'clear' out whatever's causing it without taking the server down? Thanks in advance!

• Preparing Automatic Repair appears out of nowhere & takes forever?

  I shutdown my work machine (Windows 8.1 Pro) without any errors appearing (and without installing any new software and especially no new drivers the last couple days) yesterday evening, turned it on this morning and it automatically started into 'Preparing Automatic Repair' mode. 1st of - is there any way to get more information WHY this is appearing out of the blue and.. 2ndly, how long is this usually supposed to take? This is a rather beefy machine (Intel 3770k / 4 core 3.9ghz, Intel SSDs only and 32 gb of ram) but this screen has been 'loading' for almost 1.5 hours now. Is there any sort of debug/verbose mode that would give me ANY indication what's going on?

• Keyboard mapping issue in Virtualbox on Mac OS

  I run Windows 7 as a VM in VirtualBox on my MacBook Air (using OS X 10.7). If I do not shutdown the VM but save its machine state. The keyboard will behave strangely after resuming. It seems the Windows Logo key is always hold. When I type the key 'u', the Control Panel will be shown. I tested on a real Windows 7, the same dialog will be shown when I press Win-key and 'u'. When I type the key 'e', the Explorer will show up, some as press Win-key and 'e' on a real Windows 7. If I click 'Restart' from the Start menu of Windows 7, after restarting the VM, the keyboard works again. I think there are some conflicts with keyboard driver in VM. It is quite annoying, usually I usually close a VM by saving its machine state, not shut the OS down. Is there any way to solve this problem?

  Welcome, I trouble with my laptop fujitsu siemens model V6535. My siemens work under Windows 7, and from upgrade time (vista to 7) notice something what make me really angry. When my siemens go to standby mode (when i don't use it for some time), power diode change to red and start blinking (standbay mode). When i push power button (wake up it), blinking diode change to green but nothing else happend (nothing on display, no sound of HDD). When i press power button few second and try turn it on again... it wont display anything... i have unplug charger and then shutdown and power on again without power cable. Then he start working... Few days ago i done upgrade bios to nevest version... but it don't help... Anyone have idea what can be wrong ?

I have exchange server 2010 configured and working without any errors the problem is in cisco router configuration when exchange server sends emails out the receives WAN IP not the public ip. I have configured RDNS lookups with our MX record IP addesses that match the FQDN but all our emails are rejected because it does not match with the public ip.   Is there any way to have Windows 7 hibernate Bob's account when switched to Mary's account and vice versa? I.e.: Bob is logged in Bob clicks Start shutdown switch user Bob's session is saved to disk Mary logs in Mary's session is restored as it was when Bob's turn started Both are heavy users (30+ chrome tabs open, multiple documents, multiple spreadsheets, music playing, etc) I would like to set up the system so that each gets the full use of the computer while still having all their open apps the way they left them.   My problem is basically identical to the following: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=61826 Put simply, I have a machine in ubuntu trying to connect to another ubuntu machine via a network in order to use the printer attached. There is no problem printing until I restart the guest machine. Immediately it overwrites the printers.conf file (under /etc/cups/printers.conf). It always adds the same line: AuthInfoRequired username,password I stop cups and change it to *#*AuthInfoRequired username,password to comment out the command. Start cups. Works great 'til the next shutdown. Then it gets overwritten again. Googling indicates it may be GTK problem and not CUPS, but I have found no permanent solution to date. Any suggestions appreciated ....

• Windows 7 won't restart with SSD

  I have this annoying problem that I just can't seem to fix. Recently I upgraded my main boot drive to an OCZ Vertex Turbo (60GB) which is an SSD. I've installed Windows 7 64bit. The drive works, and is really quick... blah blah blah. My problem is when I do a restart, for example click start, then arrow next to shutdown, and restart. The computer will shut down, and do a warm reboot, but it gets stuck where it says loading Windows. Just before the animation starts. So what I have to do is physically press the reset switch on the computer, then it restarts, firing up a menu which offers to launch Windows Startup Repair, so I select "Start Windows Normally". After this I boot in normally, but its damn annoying. Any ideas why this is happening, what I can do to fix it?

• Postgresql spawning a ridiculous number of postmaster processes

  For some reason postgres is spawning 700 postmaster processes for handling database requests and the postgres log file if full of 'unexpected EOF on client connection', 'incomplete startup packet' and 'sorry, too many clients already'. netstat tells me that all the open connections are local and I'm pretty sure are coming from postgres internally. This particular instance has been running just fine for the last 230 days or so and nothing has changed configuration wise. Any thoughts on where I should be looking to try and resolve this issue? This is my first time diagnosing a problem like this so if there is any steps I can take to help narrow down the cause that would be helpful as well.

  I have a database under SqlServer2005 Enterprise 64bit sp3, that is in phase 3 of 3 of recovery after a reboot without normal shutdown. It looks like with fast Recovery, the database became available when recovery moved into phase 3. However, it seems (based on message in SqlAgent log), that SqlAgent is "started" but not available to run jobs until recovery completes. I have other databases on the same server that are transactional publications. It seems to me that if I let users update the published databases, transactions will start to build up in the log, but won't be moved to the distribution database or onto the subscribers because SqlAgent isn't running jobs. • SQL Server Agents jobs and turning off the server

  I'm really new to SQL Agent jobs, but I am attempting to build up a maintainance regime for a server that will be turned off and on again at unknown intervals. It may run without being shutdown for a month, or it might only be turned on 9-5... we don't know and the client can't tell us because they don't know. So what I'm wondering is, what do I need to do to get SQL Server to run monthly and daily jobs either when they are due, or if the due date is missed, get them to be run when the server is next powered on. I could come up with a mish-mash of periodic jobs and 'on-power-up' jobs, but if there is something more elegant that would be wonderful. Obviously I'll need to ensure the SQL Server Agent is configure to start when the computer is powered up, but what else?

• IIS 7 AppPool logs an error after recycle due to inactivity

  We have Windows 2008 RS Server running IIS hosting an ASP.NET site. This morning there was a weird sequence. First a notice that the AppPool was being recycled due to inactivity: "A worker process with process id of '6896' serving application pool 'xxxx' was shutdown due to inactivity. Application Pool timeout configuration was set to 20 minutes. A new worker process will be started when needed." This makes sense and jibes with out timeout settings, but 30 seconds later we see: "A process serving application pool 'xxxx' terminated unexpectedly. The process id was '6896'. The process exit code was '0xc0000005'." I found an older KB article that explains a condition where this might happend on IIS6 due to permission issues, but am curious what might cause this on IIS7.5, especially since we are not seeing it regularly.

• Starting Redmine at boot using upstart on Ubuntu

  So after installing redmine from the repositories on Ubuntu 12.04, i've tried to create an upstart script (see below) so it would start up at boot time. While service redmine start does start redmine, it does not start automatically when booting. Also when i run service redmine stop it does stop redmine but simply hangs until i press ctrl+c Also, after stopping starting it again does not work (Also just hangs). From all the upstart examples and tutorials i have seen this should work, so i guess i'm overlooking something. • Laptop burned after heavy OpenGL usage. Is there hope?

  After programming for OpenGL and a 'slow OS' case for a couple of minutes the screen went blank. I shut it down with forcing it with the shutdown key and now there's no led at all with battery or AC, it doesn't start at all, it's totally dead. It's most certainly not the AC adapter since that didn't show at first, it doesn't start a led at all and if the AC is connected it does a very slight and faint clicking noise (one has to have his ear next to it to hear it, near the AC connector). Is there any hope? I suppose it's a burned motherboard. I suspected a burned GPU but that would still leave the leds at least lid or at least attempting to start up. Now it's totally dead. It's a TOSHIBA satellite x200-219. It has no warranty, as it's more than 2 years since purchase.

  I'm trying to install Windows 7 Ultimate over my existing Windows 7 Professional. I downloaded the ISO from Microsoft and burned the install disc at the slowest speed possible (x3). I booted to the DVD, but at the second screen I am already getting an error! That screen I am choosing between "Upgrade" and "Custom". I am trying to choose "Custom" but then I get the error: Windows installation encountered an unexpected error. Verify that the installation sources are accessible, and restart the installation. • Problems serving SVN over HTTPS on Ubuntu 10.04

  We've been experiencing some problems with our Subversion server after upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04. When trying to access a repository, regardless of client (I've tried git-svn and svn on Windows as well as svn on Ubuntu 10.04, from different computers and network locations), I get a 400 bad request.   Hello everybody. I have a CentOS server on a production environment. I need to update the PHP package that I installed using the REMI repository. Quite easy: yum update php But what is it going to happen if something goes wrong during the update? How can I rollback? What's the best technique to make sure not to compromise a production server due to an update? Is it maybe better to compile PHP from the source, rather than using a binary package? EDIT: I am not afraid of incompatibility between my code and the new PHP version (I have well tested that on development). • Raspberry Pi stuck at splash screen

  I have a raspberry pi and I am stuck at the splash screen. In the top right of the screen there is an image of a Raspberry. When I first power on the device, I get the colored screen, and then I get the image of the raspberry followed by a white cursor which quickly freezes or disappears. I put on the debian version of wheezy that allows java. (the soft float version) Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. BTW I did have it working at one point in time and all I did was go to the terminal (logged out of the GUI) and did a shutdown -h now command. But since then I've even started with a brand new version of the image and it is still not working. Oh and I did try the same SD card with a version of arch linux and it worked fine.

• How to set CHKDSK for drive C: in Windows 7

  I recently got a 0xc000007b error whenever I tried to run some application software. I found that CHKDSK for C drive might be a solution. When I tried to do it from C drive properties, it said the drive was in use and asked to schedule CHKDSK at the next reboot. I clicked OK. When I restart, I experience a BSOD. I waited for 10 minutes but still nothing happens. So I forced a shutdown (laptop) and again booted up the computer and got a BSOD for just 5 or 10 seconds and system boots and works with no problem. I repeated all these steps four or four times and yet with the same results. Is there any other way other than CHKDSK to solve the 0xc000007b error? If not, why is CHKDSK not working at boot up? Can I force CHKDSK on drive C: to perform while the system is on? Platform: Windows 7 64-bit.
