• css help , to create div

  Please see pic, this is what I want to do. I am really struggling to bloody do it lol. The master div, is 600px wide ( blue bg ) and need splitting into two areas, left for the image and right for the text etc. Ignore the vertical divider line The left hand div, is approx 200px wide, and need to specify a min-height of 100px, as the placeholder image which is centered to that div 50% 50% will change size, as I will be adding another div like this with larger image placeholder. The right part contains the header tag, description, button and second description. I have already constructed this and works fine in chrome and ff, but not in ie. So could you guys have a think, and give me some code that complies in all browsers. It is officially doing my head in now. Screenpic of it working in ff and chrome below:

  Hello, I want to be able to keep a text on the left, but in the middle of a div. <div id=sel>text goes here</div> and my CSS for the same sel{ text-align:left; vertical-align:middle; } The characters and lines of the text may vary. • Scalling connected lines

  Hello, I have some kind of a shape consisting of vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines. I have starting X,Y and ending X,Y (this is my input - just 2 points defining a line) of each line and I would like to make the whole shape scalable (just by changing the value of a scale ratio variable), so that I can still preserve the proper connection of the lines and the proportions as well. Just for getting a better idea of what I mean: it'd be as if I had the same lines in a vector editor. Would that be possible with an algorithm, and could you please, give me another possible solution if there is no such algorithm ? Thank you very much in advance!

  I have a grid layout that holds a limited 6 items per screen. This set number is just a base for the app and make it look and feel better so it must stay set to that. To get passed this and to add some flash to the app, I want to animate a style of screen change. For instance, when a finger is dragged left, push the current view to the side and bring the next it, very similar to how a gallery does it, except I would like it to be able to scroll vertical as well.   Is there any standards guidance on how to style field labels next to form fields in windows phone 7 silverlight applications? For example, let's say I have a StackPanel with the TextBlock label and a TextBox for data entry. Currently I am using the default TextBlock Margin included in the PhoneTextSubtleStyle ("12,0,12,0"), and using a Margin of "0,-12,0,0" to push the TextBox up closer to the label: <StackPanel HorizontalAlignment="Left"> <TextBlock VerticalAlignment="Center" Text="Name" Style="{StaticResource PhoneTextSubtleStyle}" /> <TextBox Text="{Binding ItemName, Mode=TwoWay}" TextChanged="TextBox_TextChanged" VerticalAlignment="Center" Width="433" Margin="0,-12,0,0" /> </StackPanel> Note that the TextBox seems to have some internal padding of 12 pixels to the left and right, so that the TextBlock label and the TextBox control visually line up perfectly on the left. The problem is, I see existing apps with widely varying conventions for field label styling. Some do not do the negative margin adjustment, like I have above. Some don't. Some appear to override the label TextBlock Margin so that it is indented an additional 12 pixels on the left (i.e. "24,0,12,0" instead of the default "12,0,12,0"). Some apps put the labels to the left of the fields themselves (I hate that). Is there some standard design guidance on field labels in Windows Phone 7? I read through the design template PDF and could only determine that the field labels should be upper case on the first word (preferably only one word labels), and should NOT have a colon at the end. I didn't see anything with regards to margins or alignment between the label and the field.

• How to handle huge table ?

  I would like to display to user a table which contains ~500,000 rows. The table should be calculated based on a file (i.e. the table is known at the beginning, and does not change). I guess that building the HTML text of this table is not a good idea in terms of memory performance. So how can I build such table ? I would like user to be able to scroll the table using a vertical scroll bar. Is it possible to build on the fly only the visible part of the table ? I'm afraid to see delays because of this. Is it a better idea to use server side programming rather than Javascript ? Any advise would be appreciated.

  Nemerle is a C-like language and mostly works very well with cindent. However, its construct analogous to switch is called match: match (x) { | "Hello World" => ... | _ => ... } Is it possible to get the cinoptions for switch statements to apply to this construct, instead? Maybe there is a regular expression I can set somewhere. If not, can I get the vertical bars to align with the braces another way?

• When is it a good idea to use the CSS display property?

  I think I first learned of this property when I thought "I should put this list of items in a ul, but I want it to be laid out horizontally. I wonder if I can do that with CSS?" When I googled this, I found a couple of sites suggesting that I create a CSS rule that would change the value of the display property of the li elements to inline. I've also seen the suggestion that a div (or other block element) be given display: table-cell in order to force the vertical align property to work. These techniques seem kind of hacky. Does that make sense? This might not be a good analogy, but it seems like trying to ride a car as if it were a motorcycle. Yeah, I could replace the steering wheel with handle bars, wear a helmet, and remove all the passenger seating, but how the heck is a car going to drive on two wheels??

I have until now buildt web-pages with floats, but now I need z-index, and therefore I need to use position The test page is here http://www.it-stud.h...hovedp/combine/ The problem being the timelines (vertical multicoloured lines on the right), and this looks and works fine in FireFox and Opera for Mac and Pc, IE8, but scary things happens in Chrome and Safari.   Note: This question has been renamed and reduced to make it more focused and readable. Most of the comments refer to the old text. According to the standard objects of different type may not share the same memory location. So this would not be legal: int i = 0; short * s = reinterpret_cast<short*>(&i); // BAD! The standard however allows an exception to this rule: any object may be accessed through a pointer to char or unsigned char: int i = 0; char * c = reinterpret_cast<char*>(&i); // OK However, it is not clear to me if this is also allowed the other way around. For example: char * c = read_socket(...); unsigned * u = reinterpret_cast<unsigned*>(c); // huh? Summary of the answers The answer is NO for two reasons: You an only access an existing object as char*. There is no object in my sample code, only a byte buffer. The pointer address may not have the right alignment for the target object. In that case dereferencing it would result in undefined behavior. On the Intel and AMD platforms it will result performance overhead. On ARM it will trigger a CPU trap and your program will be terminated! This is a simplified explanation. • IE div width + scrollbar

  I have a modal UI in my web app that necessitates a fixed layout design. After much fussing, I decided absolutely positioned child elements was the way to go. However, I have one div that conditionally requires a vertical scrollbar (if there's too much content). When this scrollbar is added, the width of the div seems to vary between IE 7 and IE 8. IE8 standards mode: IE7 standards mode: I haven't even tested for IE 6, but I'm sure it's even funkier. What's the simplest, least painful way to address this to arrive at a consistent UI in all major browsers?

• Does the Eclipse editor have an equivalent of emacs's "align-regex"?

  I've been using Eclipse pretty regularly for several years now, but I admit to not having explored all the esoterica it has to offer, particularly in the areas of what formatting features the editors offer. The main thing I miss from (X)emacs is the "align-regex" command, which let me take several lines into a region and then format them so that some common pattern in all lines was aligned. The simplest example of this is a series of variable assignments: var str = new String('aString'); var index = 0; var longCamelCaseObjectName = new LongNameObject(); After doing align-regex on "=", that would become: var str = new String('aString'); var index = 0; var longCamelCaseObjectName = new LongNameObject(); Now, you may have your own thoughts on stylistic (ab)use of white space and alignment, etc., but that's just an example (I'm actually trying to align a different kind of mess entirely). Can anyone tell me off-hand if there's an easy key-combo-shortcut for this in Eclipse? Or even a moderately-tricky one?

• letting absoltuely positioned area grow

  Please see this page for reference: test page I am designing a site that has a sidebar that contains an accordion style vertical nav bar. The sidebar which contains this accordion is absolutely positioned, relative to the container that holds it. I did this so the sidebar would stay sticky to the top, bottom, and side. When you click the products button, the accordion expands well past the container, overflowing into the footer. If I floated the sidebar to the left, it would grow to accommodate the entire sidebar, but it wouldn't be sticky to the bottom of the container by default. I need a solution that allows the sidebar to be absolutely positioned, and allow growth if the accordion expands. Any Ideas? Jquery solution perhaps?

• 3 div independently relative and top aligned

  I have 3 div top aligned that should be relative to a previous div (not between them so i can't use floats or position:inline-block either). If you set display:none on 2 divs the last one shouldn't move. I can't use position:absolute because there's a relative footer underneath. I tried using a wrapper but it can't work cause the height of the divs is not fixed. The height of the wrapper gets completely ignored anyway (by the following footer) unless Im using relative children. vertical-align:top doesn't work either. Any ideas?

• Why are some strings displayed as garbage when I scroll my read-only multiline Win32 edit control ve

  In my native C+ Win32 GUI application I have a property sheet with two property pages. One of the property pages contains an edit box: EDITTEXT IDC_EDIT_ID,x,y,width,height,ES_MULTILINE | ES_READONLY | NOT WS_BORDER | WS_VSCROLL | WS_HSCROLL | NOT WS_TABSTOP,WS_EX_STATICEDGE I set a multiline text to this edit box. The text has more lines than the edit can fit, so some of the text is clipped and a vertical scroll bar appears. When I scroll up with the mouse the lines that come "from under clip area" are drawn as garbage - it looks like first one line is drawn, then some other line is drawn on the same place without first painting the background. The lines that just move up - ones that were visible before scrolling and remain visible after scrolling are displayed allright. What's the reason and workaround for this behavior?

  stack overflow wont let me post images so heres the link: http://4m0.org/images/qt.png This is my application. For this question, ignore the top part with the buttons. I have a QScrollArea Filled with many QGroupBoxes Filled with a horizontal box layout of QLabel (on the left) and QGroupBox (on the right) The right side is a vertical box layout of QPushButtons Every single element, the scrollarea, both boxes, the labels, and the buttons all have their style sheets modified so padding is 0px and margin is 0px. Why do i have all this extra space? The scroll area has space on all sides until its inner elements (the blue boxes) start. Then those boxes have space until its inner elements (the white boxes) start. Can someone tell me what is going on?

Shouldn't the Focus() method have brought the focus control into view?
