• Is it possible to use two separate USB tuners with Windows Media Center?

  I'm planning to replace my traditional PC-style media center (with twin tuners) with an Asrock Ion 3D (or similar) but this means forgoing my existing PCI-E dual tuner card for a USB solution. Since Freeview HD (using DVB-T2) is now available I'd like to equip my media center to take advantage. The trouble is there are currently no dual DVB-T2 USB tuners on the market (that I can find anyway). Would I be able to plug two separate USB tuners and have them correctly picked up and working within all apps, including Windows Media Center? Are there any caveats I might need to bear in mind when using two tuners in this way?

• Web site kills hard disk I/O, how to prevent?

  The situation: I have a server, on which we have 2-3 projects. Starting not long ago, the server started hanging up (We could not connect to it by ssh, and the connected clients had to wait 20 minutes for top to give results) Early today I managed to execute gstat while it was in this state and saw, that it stays on 100% on da0, da0s1 and da0s1f. I dont quite know what those ids meen, but I understand that some processes just kill the HD by bombing it down with requests. I ask of some propositions. I dont know how to find the culpit and can't prevent this. I have freebsd on server.

• "System call failed" error when trying to open "My Computer" etc. under the Start menu! What is happening?

  When I go to the start menu I can load program icons but if I click on Documents, My Pictures, My Computer, Default Programs...all the options on the right part--I get "System call failed". How do I solve ths? Is my HD failing? Also, I don't know if it's connected but yesterday my uTorrent stopped working in a way it has never done before. I'm not able to download torrent files. In the program I get "socket unreacheable..." Also, for the last 2 days my internet has been super-slow. I checked Kaspersky for viruses. It says: "No active threats". Windows 7 64-bit.

• Why does HDTune report better performing drives 2 months after installing them?

  OK, so this is really weird. I ran HDTune on a newly set-up home-built computer and got the following readings from my drives in mid-November. SSD 154 MB/s RAID1 87 RAID0 198 (software installs) RAID0 98 Swap drive Today, in January, I run HDTune (same version) and get these results, in MB/s: SSD 186 RAID1 98 RAID0 241 RAID0 98 (Swap drive) Here are more details that HDTune reports on the SSD drive: HD Tune: OCZ-VERTEX Benchmark Blockquote Transfer Rate Minimum : 135.4 MB/sec Transfer Rate Maximum : 219.4 MB/sec Transfer Rate Average : 185.7 MB/sec Access Time : 0.1 ms Burst Rate : 187.3 MB/sec CPU Usage : -1.0% To get to my question: Why are my hard drives improving in performance? Most of my logical drives are in some form of RAID, except for the SSD. Will this performance ever deteriorate? Note, none of my drives are a hybrid drive that uses some form of SSD to enhance the write/reads on actual platters.

  Can I put a switch before my router in my home network? • What are 'damaged files' on external hard drive (HFS format for OS X)?

  I have an external HD formatted to default HFS (Mac OS Extended - Journaled) and very once and a while I get a folder called DamagedFiles in the root of the volume. The folder contains a collection of links to files on the drive. In general the files seem fine as I am for example able to open the images or text files without a problem. Is this serious? What can I do to fix this problem? Any advice would be great as I couldn't find anything on here or via Google that addressed this problem in particular. Many thanks.

  I want to know why my laptop can't record 16khz sampling audio. The sampling rates I can have using my laptop are higher than 16khz. e.g, 44khz, 48khz, 192khz, and so on... I need to record 16khz sampling audio using my laptop. Sound card in my laptop is Conexant 20671 SmartAudio HD Although I can record 16khz sampling by Sound Forge 8.0, I am doubt whether the recorded audio is really 16khz sampling or not. Because the sound card can't record 16khz sampling, I think there may be some problems on the recording process. Could you give me any hint why the sound card can't record 16khz? and any method to identify whether the recorded audio by Sound Forge 8.0 is really 16khz? Thanks.

• BSOD after PC has been running for a while

  I'm having a problem where my computer is getting a blue screen. I have noticed that the BSOD happens after the PC has been running for about 2 days. The BSOD's seem to be an error with atikmpag.sys with an error code of 0x00000116. The problem started about a month ago.It has happened all five times that I left my computer on that long in the past month. Because my computer is a pre-built one from Dell, and I had upgraded the graphics card (at least a year ago) to a more demanding one, I replaced the stock 360W power supply that came with it. I replaced it with a more powerful, 680W one, because it seemed like the problem could be related to a lack of power supply wattage, but it didn't affect the problem at all. • Windows 8 Secureboot: How do you bootup from another device such as cd/dvd drive or usb flash etc.?

  On PC's and laptops running an older OS, this is just a simple matter of going into the BIOS and setting the boot sequence and putting the boot cd/dvd in the drive. In many cases you can even just hit one of the F* function keys to bring up the boot sequence menu on-the-fly during POST. The main problem I'm running into is that other devices besides the primary HD is disabled when SecureBoot is enabled. So far the only way I've gotten it to work is to disable SecureBoot and enable something called legacy mode. Needless to say this make it difficult to boot things like OS recovery tools, PartitionHD backups, Linux LiveCD's and a bunch of others. Is there another procedure for doing this since it seems to mess up the Windows 8 install? By mess up I mean that after re-enabling SecureBoot and starting Windows 8 normally, the OS goes into a 'preping repair phase' for some reason that takes forever to complete before getting into a usable desktop.

  I'm thinking of changing to a new laptop that only comes with a 256gb SSD. It's not tons of room, but not inadequate either. One thing I have on my HD at the moment that takes up a lot of room but is rarely used is a partition with a bootable version of Windows 7 (I'm on a mac). Would it be possible to install a bootable copy of Windows 7 onto a flash drive? I was thinking of using a 64gb Sandisk Cruzer USB 2.0, so that when I need to dip into Windows every now and again I could just plug in the flash drive.

• Windows 7: from Geforce 8800 to three monitors?

  I've got a GeForce 8800 that I've quite happy with. It drives my two 23" widescreen displays well. Now I've got a 19" standard display that I want to stick between the two widescreens. My second PCIe 16x slot is unused (as is the PCI slot below that), and I want to add a card to my Win7 x64 system. This 19" display won't be used for gaming, so I don't need anything fancy. Here are two cards I was considering, but I'm wondering if they're bad choices for some reason? If they're both fine choices, which is better and why? Again, I'm needing to power only the 19" standard display with this card, and it won't play games. I just need 1280x1024 in Win7 x64. • Installing VMWare Tools in Windows Server 2008 fails system startup

  I recently created a vmware virtual machine with windows server 2008 enterprise as Guest. My host is Ubuntu 10.04 on my Lenovo laptop. I fall into a big trouble which makes my created VM unusable after I've installed VMWare Tools. After installing tools I'm able to run the system only in safe mode. After some event manager analysis I found the issue is with drivers installed by vnmware tools. Any one has got the same issue? Is there any good practice for doing that? • Image doesn't fill monitor when connected via HDMI

  Connecting a Dell Studio Slim to a Dell ST2210 21.5" monitor. The PC has a ATI Radeon HD 4350 video card. The video card has DVI and HDMI connections. When I connect with the DVI everything works fine. When I connect with the HMDI the image doesn't fill the screen, i.e. there's a approx 1 inch black border around the image. Win7 tells me the res is 1920x1080 (the native res of the monitor). Tried rebooting, no luck.

• Windows 7 Remote Desktop with dual monitors wont wake up.

  I run Windows 7 64bit with dual monitors at work. If i connect from home using remote desktop, the next morning i cannot wake up the monitors. The computer seems to be fine (i can connect again from another pc using remote desktop) but monitor will stay blank. I've tried unplugging the monitors and reconnecting them but still frustrating. • Why does Windows 7 x64 work faster than an x86 edition on my PC?

  Why does Windows 7 x64 work faster than an x86 edition on my PC even though I mostly use x86 things in it? What's wrong with me, and what am I missing? Majority of the things I use is x86 (e.g. DAWs, games, media players). A considerable amount of them, however, are x64 (although their x86 counterparts work just fine). I've tried using the same things on the same system but always ended up finding Windows 7 x64 working slightly faster than x86. I'm very observant. I even notice the tiniest window animations. System: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 @ 2.93 GHz RAM: 2 GB x 2 = 4 GB DDR2 @ 332 MHz Motherboard: Intel D945GCNL Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 4350 @ 1 GB Dedicated Audio: M-Audio FastTrack Pro HDD: Samsung HD753LJ 733 GB & Samsung HD160JJ 156 GB As you can see, my system is old.

• Raid system fails to boot after moving from 2.6 kernel to 3.5

  I'm running Gentoo Linux with a custom compiled kernel and I've just migrated from a 2.6 kernel to a 3.5. As my HD's are on RAID 0 mode I use a custom initrd file in order to be able to boot. While kernel 2.6 is able to boot without problems the new 3.5 compiled kernel fails to boot complaining about no block devices found. After taking a look at initrd.cpio contained scripts I can see the failure message is given by mdadm tool. Does anyone has a clue about that? Edit: this morning i noticed there was some kind of issue on my old initrd which works fine for 2.6 kernels, so created a new initrd which works fine and let me to boot into GNU/Gentoo Linux with same 3.5 bzImage. • SSD runs faster on Windows as compared to Linux [closed]

  Windows 7 seems to install, boot and run much smoother & faster than each the three linux distros I have recently tried (Ubuntu 12.04 unity, Linux mint 13 MATE, and Fedora 17 on gnome 3.4). Why am I facing bad performance in Linux? I have tweaked my Linux installs for the SSD (enabling trim, disabling swap, etc.) I'm using an Acer TravelMate with i5-2410m processor, intel hd 3000 graphics, 8 gigs of ram, and a 256 gb samsung 830 ssd. Edit: Boot times are 10-15 seconds slower, there is noticeable delay from login to fully loaded desktop, and in general does not appear to be as responsive as my old windows 7 install or the Linux guests I had running on it.

• Second Monitor "Input Not Supported"

  I have two identical monitors (new Acer s211hl) with a native resolution of 1920x1080. When enabling dual monitor support in Windows 7, the primary monitor works as expected, but the second monitor says, "Input not Supported" and fails to display anything. If I change the resolution of the second monitor to 1440x900, it works as expected. Likewise, if I set it to 1920x1080 with a refresh rate of 30hz, the monitor displays video. However, neither of these are solutions, because the output looks very blurry, and the content is stretched. I am using the following hardware: Monitors: Acer s211hl Motherboard: Asus F1A75M-Pro CPU/GPU: AMD A8-3850 with integrated Radeon HD 6550D graphics I suspect that there is probably an issue with the integrated graphics or motherboard not being able to output to two 1920x1080 monitors, but I am hoping for official confirmation.

  I have a Acer Aspire TimelineX 4830TG-6808 laptop running windows 7 Ultimate with one VGA port and one HDMI port. It has one Intel HD Graphics family card and one NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M. Right now I have one monitor running via the VGA port, and also the basic laptop monitor. When I look at the monitor setup, I see one unused video card available. Can I have another monitor via the HDMI port? If I cannot run three monitors, is there some way I could make a large "single" desktop that extends over two monitors? For the sake of celerity, maybe something like having a virtual machine window that extends over two monitors. Could this maybe come from third party software?

• Ubuntu: nautilus cannot browse samba shares

  Got a problem with browsing samba shares with nautilus in ubuntu i can see workgroups but cannot go any deeper. On the other hand i can use smbclient and mount samba shares from command line. Also i can browse ubuntu shares from windows but not vise versa. So i suspect it is nautilus problem. Moreover it has never been working for me since very first ubuntu i used. Systems i tryed to browse shares on: Ubuntu 8-12 Windows Xp 7 Dune HD Max Could someone provide me with ideas how to diagnose this issue? • Need to transfer large video from Camera!-app to computer

  I have a jailbroken iPhone 4S and am trying to transfer a 25minute long HD-video that I have recorded through SmugMug's Camera-Awesome (Camera!) app. Once recorded in the app, it stays within that app's interface until you choose to save it via the app onto the camera roll. When trying this option, the app just stalls, even when leaving it for an hour plus. I assume the video is too large to copy. I am trying the iExplorer app on my MacBookAir. I can find the Documents folder inside the Camera!-folder. But as soon as I access it to view the contents, it simply stalls the app completely. Probably after trying to read the enormous video. Is there a clever way to transfer this file onto the computer? I can use iFile on the iPhone to transfer through wifi, but I don't know the Camera! app's Documents folder location on the file system.

• Thinkpad laptop heats up more than it used to - what are my options?

  Hi, I have a 3 yr old laptop (Thinkpad T61) which runs seemingly much hotter than it used to. It's not uncomfortable to touch, but I wonder whether I should do something about it. It does get uncomfortable if I have it on my lap (which I rarely need to do). I haven't made any mods to the laptop other than a bigger HD, and I recently cleaned up the inside (superficially - I didn't remove the fan). Are fans items that should be changed regularly? • ATI driver in Fedora linux 11

  I recently built a pc with an ATI Radeon HD 5750. I have installed Fedora 11 and installed the device driver for the Radeon 5700 series proprietary drivers. I wanted to see if there is graphics hardware acceleration. I typed in glxinfo at the terminal and I got: X Error of failed request: BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation) Major opcode of failed request: 135 (GLX) Minor opcode of failed request: 19 (X_GLXQueryServerString) Serial number of failed request: 14 Current serial number in output stream: 14 I don't know how to fix this. I tried to go to the ATI Catalyst Control Center; that worked, but the ATI Catalyst Control Center (Administrator) doesn't work. If anyone knows how to fix this problem then please let me know. • Hard drive placement

  I'm a video editor working with large HD files. I am building a new computer and need some help. I will be running 2 hard drives. One with the operating system and all the programs. And one with all the project files I will be working from. I am keeping these seperate. I will be purchasing a 10k rpm hard drive. So i will have a 10k rpm drive, and a 7200rpm drive. Should I put the OS on the faster drive, or put my working files on the faster drive?

• Should all my files be stored on my shared partition?

  I am setting up a tripple boot HD and was going to use a 4th partition to share files between OS's. I was wondering if there is any point in having much space on each OS partition to store files or if I just make the shared partition big and put everything on that? Is there any difference in speed between accessing files on the shared partition vs the native files? Are there any other benefits/disadvantages of having files on either the native/shared partition? EDIT: OS's in question are Windows 7, Ubuntu 12.04, and OS X 10.7.4.
