• Will Windows 7 setup overwrite Windows 8 and Ubuntu boot records?

  I have Windows 8 and Ubuntu installed, both an the same physical hd (2 partitions). Windows 8 was installed after a format, Ubuntu afterwards. I used EasyBCD to setup the boot records and the boot menu order. I want to install Windows 7 as a third operating system and just add its boot record with EasyBCD. Will there be any unwanted behavior when I install it on a third partition? I already have 100 GB of unallocated space on the disk, though have not yet made the partition. I red on this site that I should install the oldest OS first, but than I would have to do a format and start again from scratch (which I clearly do not want to do). edit: On this site, the opposite is claimed, saying it's also possible to install Windows 7 after Windows 8. However, it will restore a Windows 7 boot menu instead one of Windows 8.

  On Mac OS X 10.6.7, when I mount a sparse disk image (either by double-clicking it or using hdid from the command line), the image: Appears on my desktop Needs to be re-mounted every time I log in I'd like to set up the equivalent of an /etc/fstab which will mount the image when the system boots, and make it permanent - so I don't have to worry if my symbolic links will resolve or not. Is this more trouble than it's worth on a Mac? I noticed that there is no /etc/fstab, and /etc/fstab.hd contains a dire warning: IGNORE THIS FILE. This file does nothing, contains no useful data, and might go away in future releases. Do not depend on this file or its contents. I tried sudo hdid -notremovable <image>, which seemed like half of what I wanted (according to man hdid), but it failed with an error: hdid: attach failed - no mountable file systems.

  I have tried a few things like disabling the Intel smart response, choosing AHCI in BIOS. But there are certain problems I am still facing. I can't see my SSD during the installation of ubuntu (I am planning to install Ubuntu on my SSD and other files on HDD). When I run Ubuntu my laptop gets overheated and battery backup reduces to 90 minutes. (I guess it's related to my graphic driver ATI Raedon HD 7570). Cooling fan seems to run at its fullest, it was working much better in windows. So, overall I wanted to know what are the exact steps I need to follow to install Ubuntu on my SSD and then use my HDD to keep other files, How can I get rid of overheating and battery backup problem?

• System stuttering caused by hard drive

  My system keeps freezing for about 1-2 second every time I try to do something. For example, when I enter URL in browser, it freezes and starts working after few seconds. It is probably related to hard drive. I installed HD tune and when benchmark is in progress, causing constant disk use, everything works fine in background, there are no lags. What can be the reason of this issue? My hardware is Acer Aspire 7740G-6969 running on Windows 7.

• Video has become blurred and smoothed out?!

  Hi, Since yesterday video and graphics on my Windows 7 desktop seem to have become smoothed out and blurred slightly and I'm not sure why. The last thing I did on the machine was play Fallout New Vegas for the first time. An example can be seen in the picture here screenshot - note how smoothed out the character on the right seems, lots of definition looks lost. It's really annoying and happening regardless of what I watch. • Can you boot/install/restore a MacBook Pro with a MacBook Air USB stick?

  The new MacBook Airs don't have optical drives, so you can't install or restore the OS via DVD. They include a little USB stick for this purpose. I have a MacBook Pro and a MacBook Air. Does anyone know if it will work with my MacBook Pro? I'm thinking about removing my optical drive to put in another HD. The only sticky situation I might get into is if I need to do an install or restore on the road without an external DVD drive. • How can I copy files to an external drive and verify their integrity in OS X?

  I'm moving large amounts of data from one external drive to another larger one. The files are important and the smaller drives need to be cleared and reused (HD camera). Is there some utility for moving files and verifying their integrity? I've been using this command find . -type f -exec md5 '{}' \; > md5list.txt in the terminal to create a list of MD5s for each file then using diff to compare the two. However, I am moving 320GB at a time, which takes a while by itself. Computing the checksums takes another hour or so. It would be much more efficient to do this on the fly, during the copy. I'm just hoping someone has already written the software...

• DIrect videos and slideshows fullscreen from another display

  I have 3 displays: 1 control display I can see 2 40" Full HD displays I can't see my need is to play videos and presentations fullscreen on the two 40" screens while being able to control them from the control display. So far I am able to achieve this with a cumbersome set of keyboard shortcuts like: open VLC on control display send to left display with Win + Shift + Left go fullscreen with f and more combinations to restore, get VLC on control display etc. This is really error prone and not professional. Also I wish I have a media player and a slideshow player that can: send the same video / slideshow to the two 40" displays at the same time send two different videos / slideshows, one each 40" display having all controls on the central display, the only one I can see. Any advice welcome, thank you for your support.

• Can I move my Picasa data from one machine to another?

  I have lots of photos stored on an external hard disk. I have Picasa installed on my Windows 7 laptop and have spent a lot of time cataloging the collection, put names to faces and the like. I now have a new machine and I want all the hard work I did on my laptop to be available when I plug my external HD in to the new machine. Is there a magic spell I need to cast to make this happen? • Removing integrated video card drivers broke other hardware?

  I just purchased and installed an XFX ATI Radeon HD 4650 video card. The installation instructions said to remove the old video card drivers before installing the new driver. I did both things, but now every time I start my computer, the Found New Hardware wizard pops up for the following three devices: PCI Device SM Bus Controller Other PCI Bridge Device Furthermore, my LAN port no longer functions. The cable's connected, and the light on the port comes on, but the computer can't find any servers when I attempt to connect with it. The modem and router are working, and obviously I'm able to use the other computer here to post this. What do I do to fix this?

  I have recorded some nice sport videos with mz GoPro HD action camera. I would like to edit the audio track. I dont want to get rid of the whole audio track - just erase small parts (e.g. compression artifacts or me saying some swearwords). When the original audio track is cleansed, Id add another music layer in FCE afterwards. I'd really like to edit the audio like in a WaveLab etc. Any ideas?

  In my ~ dir, I have some symlinks that point to "/Volumes/Macintosh HD 2/..." and I want to find them all recursively. A look at the man page for 'find' says the '-lname' argument will search the symbolic link contents. It appears to work, but not recursively: $ pwd /Users/myusername $ sudo find . -lname '/Volumes*' $ cd Documents/ $ sudo find . -lname '/Volumes*' ./Documents on Win7 ./work.rtf What's going on? How can I make this work recursively? -- The 'find' program is supposed to always work recursively. • Clean Install: Ubuntu 8.04, 10.04 or somthing else?

  I'm faced with a pending clean install due to a dying hard drive in my old Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop. I've been running Ubuntu 8.04 on it since... 8.04 and I've been more or less happy with it except that it's a PITA to recompile the kernel or do any other kernel related work. I mostly do software dev on it, gcc, gvim, c/c++/perl/php/mysql and running vmware server 2.0. I've heard mixed reviews of 10.04, and am wondering what to put on the new HD. I'm even considering just sticking with 8.04 as it seems to mostly meet my needs. Any suggestions?

I just have slightly different boundary conditions. We plan to serve video to ca. 1,000 users simultaneously. It will be live stream, so the server will receive the stream in HD (1280x720), cache it, reformat to various other resolutions and send it to users. I would like to be able to write this image on HD in stead of on disk, but I have no option to browse the file system. Therefore I would like a virtual dvd disk, that is in fact a folder, but that is recognized by the app. as a real, empty dvd. I have tried MagicDisk, but it doesn't seem to offer the ability to couple an emulated disk drive to a folder...

There is one hard drive (320GB capacity) in the system now, which contains the current installation that I would prefer to keep. The drive currently inside the laptop will be replaced with one of the Hitachi drives, and the other Hitachi drive will be fitted into the laptop by way of a Dell hard drive "caddy" enclosure, which inserts into the media bay of the laptop (you remove the cd-rom bay, insert hd-bay).

• Rebuilding RAID1 in Ubuntu

  I had my second HD in my RAID1 come up with bad sectors. So I got another drive and pulled out the bad sector drive and put the new drive in. With the original working RAID1 drive in the computer it failed to boot. I manually copied everything from the old drive over via a Gparted Live CD. Still no booting. Kind of scratching my head here as I can see that both of the drives have data on them but are unable to get either of them to boot. I used a Ubuntu live CD and couldn't even manually mount either of the drives, which I thought was really the odd part. Not sure where to go from here.

  hi all my problem is this: i have one video card (radeon hd 4350) and 2 monitors (dell). the first monitor works using dvi-to-dvi. the second does not, using hdmi-to-dvi. the monitor does not register any input. however when i use vga-to-vga, the second monitor does work, with a typically low vga resolution. we have tested the hdmi-to-dvi cable, so why does the monitor not register any input? using windows vista. i have installed all the lastest drivers, done all the basic stuff etc. any help at all would be appreciated. thanks

• Possible causes for Domain server being unavailable?

  One of our servers was compromised after a user with administrative privileges accidentally loaded a virus from a USB drive on a desktop connected to the domain. The two most obvious symptoms of this were: The server is no longer responding to login attempts The root directory of the drive containing user data has been filled with randomly named empty folders. (Initially it was around a million folders, I've been slowly deleting them.) I've run several virus scans from different vendors and am fairly confident the virus has been removed but the damage is done. I'm hoping the two symptoms are related and that once the directories are gone the server will start responding again. The drive is very slow to respond. I'm deleting about 20k folders at a time. Anymore than that and windows explorer becomes unresponsive. In the event that I finish cleaning up the HD and things don't return to normal what other things can I check?

  I'm buying this unit from deal extreme: it's a bitorrent downloader, with NAS capability. I'm interested in sharing an external HD in it, with media and backup purposes. I'm afraid of energy problems (don't know if this is the correct term), corrupting my mounted drives (like after a storm), so I thought about buying an UPS that sends a "signal" to my Linux box, and a script in my Linux box would unmout everything to avoid problems. • Can DVI look different?

  I have a desktop with an nVidia GT 9500 which has two DVI slots. I have a 24" TN-Panel TFT on that and it looks pretty good. Then I hooked it onto the DisplayPort of my ThinkPad with the Intel HD 3000 card with an DP-DVI adapter and I think that the fonts look even clearer. Both computers run Kubuntu 12.04, although the ThinkPad is freshly set up, while the desktop is migrated from the previous release. Is this a hardware thing or is it just some setting in the anti-aliasing or sub-pixel-hinting?

  I have fibre broadband with speeds up to 38mbs, my Dell D600 has its max 2gb ram and has an ATI Mobility RADEON 9000 4xAGP 32mb card in it...Its TV support it says is NTSC or PAL in S-video and composite modes with a 7-pin mini-DIN connector (optional S-video to composite video adapter cable) and a vga port which i am using at the moment... The laptop runs Windows XP, an 80g HD with only windows + necessary updates and anti virus software on it..... There is HDMI on the TV, but not the laptop Fairly slow moving and close up pictures arent too bad, but when the movment is fast(a shot on goal) or in the distance, I cant see the ball and the images go out of focus.
