• Why are mainframes still around?

  It's a question you've probably asked or been asked several times. What's so great about Mainframes? The answer you've probably been given is "they are fast" "normal computers can't process as many 'transactions' per second as they do". Jeese, I mean it's not like Google is running a bunch of Mainframes and look how many transactions/sec they do! The question here really is "why?". When I ask this question to the mainframe devs I know, they can't answer, they simply restate "It's fast". With the advent of Cloud Computing, I can't imagine mainframes being able to compete both cost-wise and mindshare-wise (aren't all the Cobol devs going to retire at some point, or will offshore just pickup the slack?). And yet, I know a few companies that still pump out net-new Cobol/Mainframe apps, even for things we could do easily in say .NET and Java. Anyone have a real good answer as to why "The Mainframe is faster", or can point me to some good articles relating to the topic?

• Accessing a drive on remote server via app.config

  I am working on a website with a scheduled dataloader exe. The website lives on the web server and the dataloader lives on the DB server. One of the steps in the process is for the dataloader to access the WEB server (to copy/paste a maintenance page file..e.g.\192.168.1.101\c$\maintenance.htm). I am, not surprisingly, running into permissions issues because the dataloader needs to be able to login to the WEB server as an admin to copy the file. Is there a way I can set up logging in (something akin to impersonating a user through an App.config?) Thanks! -KC

  I'm using Grid view in my asp.net page and I'm fetching data from SQL Server and placing in my grid view. Now my problem is, I'm using paging and placing 50 rows per page in Grid view. I would like to fetch top 50 rows from database in the start up and bind to the Grid View and when i click on next page, then again go to the database and fetch Second Top 50 rows and bind to GV. and this process hasto continue until last row is fetched from Database. Can you tell me How to write Query in achieving this??

  I am in a bit of a rut with a cURL issue. The post works greate, the data is POSTED just fine and received ok, but the url of the posted page never appears in the browser after the cURL session is executed, for example look at the following code: $ch = curl_init("http://localhost/eterniti/cart-step-1.php"); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_HEADER, false); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_POST, true); curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_POSTFIELDS, "error=1&em=$em&fname=$fname&lname=$lname&email1=$email1&email2=$email2&code=$code&area=$area&number=$num&mobile=$mobile&address1=$address1&address2=$address2&address3=$address3&suburb=$suburb&postcode=$postcode&country=$country"); curl_exec($ch); curl_close($ch); The post works fine and I am taken to the cart-step-1.php where I can process the posted data, HOWEVER the location in the URL address bar of the browser remains that of the script page, in this case proc_xxxxxx.php Any ideas how to get the URL address to reflect the page I am actually POSTED to? • Key logger wont record key strokes without console

  I created a small basic key logger in C++. For some reason when I compile and run the program with the console displayed, it will record every key stroke I make in whatever program I am using such as a browser and store it in a text file. However when I make it so that it WON'T display a console window, it will not record anything and it's just a process in the background doing nothing.   I have XMLs(or Objects) that represents data at some point in a business process. I would like to be able to see what has changed between step1 and step5(two versions of the same XML or Object). Id like to implement this like diff function in version control system. how to do it in web app? P.S. I dont want to just store those files in VCS and than make it do the diff. However if I could somehow emulate VCS without having one that would be cool. P.S. I know there are some JS frameworks that offer diff functionality, but the XML could have 10MB, so I think it should be dont at server side.

• C semaphores: sem_wait throwing inexplicable error

  I'm working on a problem which we have to use semaphores to solve. I have an array which contains two semaphores, gsem, and given certain conditions call sem_wait(&(gsem[me])), which is supposed to waiting until that particular process is woken up. However, for some reason it gives me the error Bad file descriptor. I looked up sem_wait and the Open Group spec says this is not an error sem_wait can cause. This is making my whole program crazy and I have no idea why this is failing.

• OS monitoring using JAVA

  I'm planning to implement a framework for monitoring OS level resources: process network stats cpu info etc using JAVA. I see there is SIGAR API by Spring, which is implemented in native language and JAVA API being provided on top. But I will prefer not to have native stuff in my framework, rather for each OS will write a Java Class which will fetch required OS info by running system commands via JAVA Runtime. So I would like to have inputs/suggestions that one may have seen of not doing this in JAVA and use native app/api/jni. Any example will help for sure. I agree each OS has different commands to get these stats, but will prefer to have a Java Class per OS than have/load native code.

• Possible to implement an IsViewPortVisible dependencyproperty for an item in an ItemsControl?

  I need to enable/disable spell checking in a richtextbox in an ItemsControl, based on whether the RichTextBox is visible in the ItemsControl's Scrollviewer. I think the route is to implement an IsViewPortVisible dependency property and wire an event handler for a changed event...   Is there any way, in PostgreSQL accessed from Python using SQLObject, to create a temporary table from the results of a cursor? Previously, I had a query, and I created the temporary table directly from the query. I then had many other queries interacting w/ that temporary table. Now I have much more data, so I want to only process 1000 rows at a time or so. However, I can't do CREATE TEMP TABLE ... AS ... from a cursor, not as far as I can see. Is the only thing to do something like: rows = cur.fetchmany(1000); cur2 = conn.cursor() cur2.execute("""CREATE TEMP TABLE foobar (id INTEGER)""") for row in rows: cur2.execute("""INSERT INTO foobar (%d)""" % row) or is there a better way? This seems awfully inefficient.

  Hi all, In my project after long process, i got a 2 dimensional byte array from the IR camera. The byte array holds image in it... How to convert that byte array to image in C#.. I know that by MemoryStream ms = new MemoryStream(byteArray); System.drawing.Image im = Image.FromStream(ms); We can pass 1 dimensional array and convert it into image.. If i pass 2 dimensional array as a single dimensional array.. it shows error.. How to rectify it..???? or else how to convert 2 dimensional byte array to image...??? Thank you!!

• How to determine on which file system a file was created in Java

  Hi Everyone! I get files in different formats coming from different systems that I need to import into our database. Part of the import process it to check the line length to make sure the format is correct. We seem to be having issues with files coming from UNIX systems where one character is added. I suspect this is due to the return carriage being encoded differently on UNIX and windows platform. Is there a way to detect on which file system a file was created, other than checking the last character on the line? Or maybe a way of reading the files as text and not binary which I suspect is the issue? Thanks Guys !

• Viewing directory containing MIME encoded email messages

  I have an application which generates and sends MIME encoded messages (javax.mail.internet.MimeMessage) through an SMTP server. As part of the development process only, I'd like to be able to view these messages rather than send them (I know the sending works just fine, but there are restrictions on the domains within the dev environment which makes it a little difficult) I thought the easiest way would be to save the text for each message to a directory, then point "an app" at the directory and check them over. So the question is, what would be a good app to use? Is it as simple as configuring Outlook or another email client to do it? Thanks

  In Internet Explorer 7, you can select options from comboboxes by typing the first few letters of the value you're looking for. However, some people in our organisation are a bit slow and can't type their selection quick enough, with the result that the timeout is triggered and the "select as you type" process starts all over again. Example: If I type A-R-M-A (looking for Armadale) then wait half a second and type D, I'll get selections beginning with the letter D. What I want to do is increase this timeout to allow for slow typers. (We're in a corporate environment so rolling out these changes to all machines won't be a problem).

• MacPorts: violation of the ports-filesystem hierarchy in the destroot phase

  I'm in the process of developing a Portfile for my application and I'm running into problems during the destroot phase. According to the MacPorts guide, the destroot phase executes the following command: make install DESTDIR=${destroot} I think I may be misunderstanding how this is supposed to work in the Makefile. My application is very simple and the install rule only needs to copy a couple of directories to the DESTDIR so it is specified as follows: install: cp -R bin $(DESTDIR)/bin cp -R lib $(DESTDIR)/lib cp -R cfg $(DESTDIR)/cfg However, when I try to do a MacPort installation of my application, I get the following warnings: ---> Staging test into destroot Warning: violation by /bin Warning: violation by /lib Warning: violation by /cfg Warning: test violates the layout of the ports-filesystems! How do I fix this? Am I misunderstanding how the DESTDIR variable is used in the install rule or missing something altogether?

  Hello. Can anyone tell me how to create a custom installer to 'install' games. I say custom meaning I don't want the user to have the option where the game is installed. I want it to be a straight forward process, maybe with just one loading bar. The program I'm developing is a 'center' for game playing, which includes a community and other features, such as a timer that records how long a game is played for. I just thought that installing each game in one place, with a simple installer would make the program easier to use. It also will allow me to do other features as the games will all be installed in one place. No need for the user to specify where the game is installed. Would this be possible?

• Running an app that requires an administrator account from a service

  Is it possible to run handle.exe (from sysinternals) from a service (in windows7) without having to turn off UAC? The service is a custom c-app that needs to find out which process is locking a file it tries to access and handle.exe seems to be a good way to solve it but i can't get it to work with UAC turned on. This app runs all the time so i can't have a UAC prompt while its running but its fine if it shows up at startup. Handle.exe works fine from an admin commandprompt but fails when trying to run from a normal prompt. I call handle.exe from CreateProcess() and get the output from pipes. I guess there should be a way to solve this but i can't figure it out. Setting up the service to log in from an admin account does not seem to work.

• Can I lock rows in a cursor if the cursor only returns a single count(*) row?

  I would like to restrict users from inserting more than 3 records with color = 'Red' in my FOO table. My intentions are to A) retrieve the current count so that I can determine whether another record is allowed and B) prevent any other processes from inserting any Red records while this one is in process, hence the for update of. I'd like to do something like: cursor cur_cnt is select count(*) cnt from foo where foo.color = 'Red' for update of foo.id; Will this satisfy both my requirements or will it not lock only the rows in the count(*) who had foo.color = 'Red'?

• How do I make a TCP server work behind a router (NAT) without any redirection configuration needed.

I have two machines A and B: A: Client (behind NAT) B: Server (behind NAT) I want B to be able to listen on any given port, so that A can send packets to B through that specific TCP port and receive any response. If both machines are not behind a NAT it is pretty straight foward process. However how do I make it work so that it works even when B is behind a router, without him having to go change the router configuration enable some port forwarding etc... The validation is done by Spring, and I wouldn't like to interfere the process, because there's some annoying dependencies. What would be the best approach? • Can you tell me why my webpage displays differently in IE and how to fix it.

  I've been browsing through all of the CSS related cross-browser questions trying to troubleshoot my IE styling issues with no luck. Can anyone tell me how to fix my homepage styles so that it displays the same in IE as it currently does in Firefox? I've used Firebug (probably why it looks good in Firefox) but I can't find any tools for IE that will let me change the stylesheet real time. I'm just as interested in the process of figuring out this answer as I am in the answer itself so posting the steps you took to figure it out would be beneficial. (want to be able to do this myself next time!!!) Website is AppQandA.com. Scroll down to the bottom in IE and notice the footer. It's not like this on every page.....just the main page and the questions page.
